Mikhail Lomonosov

Mikhail Lomonosov (be) born in 1711 in Archangelsk province. His father (be) a fisher and young Mikhail (like) to help him. He (be) fond of reading books. As he (be) 19 years old, he (decide) to study in Moscow. He (go) there on foot. In Moscow he (enter) the Slavic- Greek-Latin Academy. After his graduation from Academy he (go) abroad to complete his knowledge in chemistry and mining. After he had returned from abroad, he (become) the first Russian professor of chemistry in 1745.

He (write) works on physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography, history. Besides scientific works, he (write) poems as well. He (be) the author of the first grammar of the Russian language.

Lomonosov (be) the founder of the first Russian university. This university is situated in Moscow and still carries his name.

Mikhail Lomonosov (die) in 1765. But he is still known as the father of the Russian science, an outstanding poet, the founder of Russian literature.

I study at the Ukhta Forestry Industrial College. It was founded in 1930 in Syktyvkar, and now it is situated in our town in Dzerzhinski Street.

Our college consists of 2 administrative buildings and 2 hostels. Students are trained at different specialities: book-keepers, builders, mechanics and technologists. They study at a full-time and extra-mural departments. Full-time department students are to attend lectures and practical lessons. Extra-mural department students study themselves. The college course lasts 3 or 4 years.

There are many classrooms and laboratories, 2 gyms and a canteen, a video class and a library in our college. The students of our college have their practice at wood-working and mechanical workshops, garage and different enterprises of our republic.

The academic year is divided into 2 terms. At the end of each term students take exams. Those who study regularly pass their exams successfully and get a scholarship, but those who spend little time on their studies often fail at the exams. On graduating the students receive diplomas, which give them right to work or to continue studies at the Institute or University.
