Jarasandha again attack Mathura - genesis of the race of Yadavas

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the valorous lord Krishna, together with Baladeva — the son of Rohinl, started living in Mathura comfortably.

They had reached the youthful age. Then lord Krishna having been adorned with the royal grace roamed about in Mathura with delight, having enough of forests.

After some time, the glorious king Jarasandha of Rajagrha, was again reminded of the event of the killing of Kamsa at Mathura.

Both his daughters again incited him to wage a war. The Yadavas allowed Jarasandha to wage the wars seventeen times, but the Yadavas could not kill him in the land of Mathura.

Thereafter, the king of Magadha, Jarasandha, accompanied with the four fold army, thought of waging a war with the Yadavas, eighteenth time.

Jarasandha, the valorous lord of Rajagrha, felt shameful from his earlier defeats and again prepared himself for a war.

The valorous son of Brhadratta, equipped by several other means, returned towards the city of Mathura, with the intention of killing Krishna.

Learning about the return of Jarasandha - the lord of Magadha, the Yadavas were panicky and they sat in an assembly for consultations.

At that point of time Vikadru, who was illustrious and well versed in polity, spoke to Shri Krishna in presence of Ugrasena.

O adorable one, 0 Govinda, you listen to the origin of the race of Yadavas. The appropriate time for the race has arrieved. I am speaking out because of the same. You listen to me attentively. After hearing this, in case my words appeal you, then you can act accordingly.

I am narrating to story of the origin of the Yadava Vatnsa, as had been heard by me from the self conscious sage Vyasa, in earlier times.

In the Vamsa of Vaivasvata Manu, there had been a virtuous king named Haryasva, who had been quite valorous like Indra.

Madhumati — the daughter of Daitya Madhu, happened to be his beloved wife. As Sad was dear to Indra, similarly, Madhumati was dear to Haryasva.

She was youthful as well as virtuous. There was none comparable to her in her beauty. Because she established the task of king Haryasva, she was dearer to him than his life.

Having been born in the race of demons, she with a beautyful and slender waist, lovable, performer of the vrata of a single wife, roamed about in the sky.

She inspite of being desirable, loved Haryasya — the ruler of Iksavaku dynasty from her heart. О Madhava, once his elder brother who hold his younger brother in confidence, drove Haryasva out from his country. Haryasva then left Ayodhya and started living in the forest with his small family including Madhumati.

The lotus eyed Haryasva, who was well aware of the moves of destiny started spending time in the forest with his wife, with delight, once Madhumati, spoke to her husband who had been driven out by his brother from the country.

“O valorous person, shed away the desire for the kingdom of Ayodhya. You get along with me. Let us move to my parent’s home.

The pleasent forest of Madhuvana, is the dwelling place of my father. The trees of that place yield the desired fruits. Both of us living there shall enjoy heavenly pleasures.

О lord of earth, you are the beloved of both my parents. My brother Lavanasura shall also honour you immensely to please me.

O best of humans, reaching there, both of us living together shall enjoy pleasures to our liking, like a royal couple. As the gods and the divine damsel enjoy themselves in the Nandana forest, similarly both of us shall enjoy the heavenly pleasures there. Let you meet with all the comfort.

О lord, your brother, shall always remain intoxicated with power and remain arrogant. He is jealous of both of us. Therefore, both of us should also disown him.

It is no of use living like a slave at the mercy of others. Therefore disgrace to this denounced living here. О valorous one, let both of us go to my parent’s home.

О Shri Krishna, though Haryasva was kindly disposed towards his brother and had no desire to take revenge from him, still having been filled with desire, the words of his wife appealed to Haryasva.

Then Haryasva — the foremost of the lustful people, proceeded to Madhupur with his wife.

Reaching there, Madhu — the king of Danavas said to Haryasva, “O son Haryasva, you are welcome here. I feel immensely happy after meeting you.

I am entrusting the entire kingdom to you instead of Madhu. You live here comfortably.

In the forest my son Lavana will also help me. He will help you in subjugating the enemies.

You better rule this country which extends upto sea shore. There are enough of cows and riches here. The place is mainly inhabited by the cowherds.

О dear one, by living here, the Girinara mountain will serve you as the capital city. The great nation is close to the ocean, and has enough of marsh land. There ar no diseases here.

Your vast country would be known by the name of Anarta. О lord of earth, I am sure, that it is essential because of the movement of the time. Depending upon time, you live here observing your duties and coduct.

Your race shall be combined with Yayati and Yadu races. Your race shall go on under the lunar race (having no concern with the solar race).

О excellent one, this is my grace. By giving you this best of the kingdom, I shall proceed to the salt ocean for performing tapas.

О excellent one, for the development of your race, you rule over the best of this kingdom.

Haryasva than said, “very well” and then accepted the kingdom. Thereafter, the Daitya left for the ocean, for the performing of tapas.

On the other hand, Haryasva, then established a city, near the Raivataka mountain, for himself.

The country came to be known by the name of Anarta, having enough of cows, then came to be known as Saurastra.

The marsh land with enough of trees, surprising types of fields, besides the green fields of crops, surrounded by rampart walls, as well as villages, filled with cereals, was ruled by the king Haryasva. He increased the delight of his people by good governance and his glory.

Because of the excellent treatment of the people and good conduct the peaceful country was filled with virtues and started progressing, rapidly.

After having been crowned as the king, with his royal performance, the king Haryasva, because of his noble conduct, and by noble ways amassed enormous riches for his race.

Haryasva, who was wise and possessed noble character, got a son from the womb of Madhumati, who was known by the name of glorious Yadu.

The voice of illustrious was deep like the sound of kettle drums, he possessed all the royal symptoms and started growing day by day. He was completely invincible by the enemies.

The son of Haryasva came to be known by the name of Yadu who possessed all the royal symptoms, in the same way as in earlies times his glorious aucestor Puru possessed the same.

The immensely glorious Haryasva had only one son, who was extremely beautiful, valorous and was competent enough to rule the earth.

The king Haryasva after ruling the country for ten thousand years produced on to heaven. He was the foremost of the religious minded ruler of the earth.

After the death of his father, the people established Yadu on the throns, who was quite broad minded or liberal. He started shining like another Sun, after his father who too had been shining similarly.

Yadu was glorious like Indra, because of whom, we are known as Yadus. After he started ruling all the dangers vanished. The thieves and the robbers simply disappeared.

Once upon a time, the king Yadu, accompanied with his liberal wives and other ladies, was enjoying water sports like the moon among the stars.

The valorous Yadu was about to come out of the water, when someone forcily dragged him in the deep oceanic water. The fact was that Dhiimravarna the lord of serpents forcefully dragged him in the deep ocean and carried him in the great town of the serpents.

All the pillars, horses and the doors were made of gems and had been decorated with the strings of beads. Heaps of white conches were lying there. All the dwelling places of the town were decorated with germs. The trees were growing fresh shoots, leaves, besides the sprouts, which added to the glory of the town.

The Naga damsels living at the base of the ocean, were found in large number. The village had the lustre of gold like the sun as well as the white like the moon.

Yadu was the king of kings and the city of Nagaraja was built in the oceanic water which was spotless. It appeared to have been built over the surface of the ground.

The king Yadu then entered the town of the serpents which was based in the water.

He was offered there a lotus seat studded with gems, over which the lotus petal had been spread and was covered with the sheet made of the thread of lotus plant.

When the king Yadu thus occupied the seats provided by the serpents, then Dhiimravarna — the king of serpents, spoke to the king Yadu, with a peaceful mind.

О king, your father, laying the foundation of this vast royal dynasty, has proceeded on to the heaven.

This dynasty will be called as Yadavas dynasty after your name. Your father has established this race for your benefit, which is the mine of the rulers.

О lord, in your dynasty, the gods, the Rishis and the Nagas shall be born.

О best of the rulers, I have five excellent daughter, who are virgins. They possess, excellent conduct and character. They have been born of the sister of Yauvansva.

You better accept them as your wives according to your own dharma. According to my view, you are the best suited groom for them. Therefore, I would also bestow you the desired boon.

From today onwards your seven generations or races would become glorious which would be known as Bhaima, Kukkura, Bhoja, Andhaka, Yadava, Dasarha, and Vrsni, which would be quite famous.”

Thus speaking, Dhiimravarna, gave away his five daughters, who were quite chaste, with the reciting of a samkalpa holding water in his hand.

Then Dhumravarna — the foremost of the Nagas, delightfully bestowed, like a liberal person, the boons to the king.

“О Praiseworthy king, you will get five sons from my fine daughters possessing the lustre of their parents.

With the effect of my boon, the people of your race would be able to freely move in water and would be able to take to any form at will.

The excellent Yadu, after receiving the girls and the boons, reached the surface of the water with great force.

The king accompanied with the fine Nagakanyas, appeared like the moon accompanied with stars and constellations.

Attired in the bridal costumes, and adorned with divine garments and sandal paste, Yadu — the excellent king, arrived out of water found his entire herm present there.

Thereafter the king Yadu assuring all his wives having the lustre of fire delightfully went to the city.

Here ends chapter — 37, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata relating, to the repeated attack of Jarasandha and genesis of the race of Yadavas. (Vrs. 1-73, P.T. = 4987)
