Killing of the army and the courtiers of Sambasura

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, there after a great war was fought between Pradyumna the son of Rukmini as well as the sons of Sambhasura, which was quite thrilling.

At that point of time the Daityas filled with anger forcefully shot weapons at Pradyumna, including arrows, Saktis, battle-axes, discs, tomaras, kuntas, bhusundis as well as the musalas.

Observing this Pradyumna, the son of Shri Krishna, was enraged and making use of his bow from which all the weapons could be shot, issued fire arrows and destroyed each one of the weapons of the enemies.

All the asuras then again getting enraged, with a firm resolve of waging the war, for the killing of Pradyumna, showered the rain of arrows.

With this, the rage of Pradyumna — the form of Ananga, was increased. He at once held the bow in his hand shot arrows, killing ten sons of the valorous Sambasura, who proceeded on to the abode of Yama.

Thereafter, the enraged son of Kesava, rapidly shot a spear which at once cut off the head of Chitrasena.

Thereafter, the sons of Sambasura who had escaped death, started fighting collectively. Showering the rain of arrows, then collectively attacked Prayumna with the intention of killing him. Getting anxious for the war they started showering the arows.

The immensely illustrious Pradyumna playfully starting cutting their heads of a hundred best of archers in battlefield. Again he desirous of fighting with more warriors, stood at the start of the battle ground.

Learining about the killling of his hundred sons, Sambasura felt extremely painful. He therefore asked him charioteer to yoke the chariot.

Listening to the command of the king, the charioteer offered his salutation to the demon king placing his head over the earth and inspired the entire army with his chariot towards the battle ground.

A thousand deer were yoked in the chariot. It was yoked with the strings of serpents or the serpents were use in the chariot in place of strings or ropes. The chariot had been covered with the tiger skin. It was decorated with a garland of small bills. It had paintings over its ten parts, over each one of which the pictures of birds and animals had been painted.

All parts of the chariot were decorated with stars. The yoking rod of the chariot was made of gold, which added to the grace of the chariot. It was also decorated with highly raised flags. Its flag was embrassed with the figures of the lions, which kept on fluttering.

The cover of the chariot was quite beautiful showing separate departments. The rods were decorated with Vajramani gems, which looked charming. Its top was as high as the mountain Mandarachala. It was decorated with beautiful fly whisks.

It was adorned with the garlands of constellations. Its poles were made of gold and in such a beautiful chariots, Sambasura was seated.

He wore the astonishing type of beautiful coat of arms, besides the bow and the arrows. Influenced with the moves of the destiny, he deaparted for the waging of the war.

He was accompanied with four ministers known by the names of Durdhara, Ketumall, Satruhanta and Pramardana. He marched towards the battle ground, surrounded by the ministers, for waging the war.

Sambasura departed for waging the war with ten thousand elephants, two hundred chariots, eight thousand horses, and ten lakh fort soldiers.

At the time of departure for the waging of the war, several evil signs appeared before him. The flocks of vultures started flying in the sky. The red clouds started thundering like those of the evening time.

The clouds started thundering aloud, the lightening started falling from the sky. Then she jackals started howling in an inauspicious manner, which was indication of the huge destruction of the army.

The vultures being desirous of drinking the blood of the Danavas, perched at the top of the chariot flags. A headless trunk was found before the chariot of Sambasura.

Several of the birds performing over the top of the chariot started issuing pathetic sounds. The sun was eclipsed by Rahu-a planet, which was covered with many circles.

Sambasura’s left eye started fluttering, which was indication of danger. His left arm started shaking and the horses of the chariot started tumbling.

A crow perched over Sambasura — the enemy of the gods. Parjanya started raining pebbles and the burning rod, mixed with blood.

At the starting place of the war-field thousands of dangers appeared. The whip fell from the hand of the charioteer driving the horses.

Caring the least for the ill omens, Sambasura having been filled with rage, with the desire for the killing of Pradyumna, marched forward.

At that point of time all the war drums, including the battle drum, double drums, couches, panavas, anakas were sounded. Their thundering sound shook the earth.

All the birds and the animals were frightened with that sound and fearfully started rushing to all the directions.

At that point of time Pradyumna — the son of Shri Krishna with the intention of killing the enemy stood there surrounded by innumerable armies, with a firm resolve.

Then the enraged Sambasura, shot a thousand arrows at Pradyumna. Finding the arrows so approaching him, Pradyumnam, destroyed them all like an expert warrior.

Pradyumna then started shorwering the arrows, as a result of which not a single warrior of the demon army was left unhurt.

With the showering of the arrows by Pradyumna continously, all the army warriors became disinterested in waging the war and feeling panic striken gathered around Sambasura, sqeezing itself.

Finding the flight of the army, Sambasura, fainted with anger and had at that point of time commanded his soldiers/ commanders.

At my commander you proceed and attack the son of my enemy. You should not neglect my enemy kill him in no time.

In case, he is neglected then he shall surely destroy the body which neglects the disease. Therefore in order to please me, you should kill the evil minded sinner.”

Thereafter the courtiers honouring the command of the lord, raining the arrows with anger, anxiously drove the chariots.

Finding the attack of the demon army. Makaradhvaja-Pradyumna was also enraged and he stood before the army with force.

Then Pradyumna, who increased the delight of Rukmini, having been filled with anger, shot twenty five arrows at Durdhara, sixty three arrows at Ketumall seventy arrows at Satruhanta, and eighty two arrows at Pradyumna, wondering them at the same time.

Thereafter the enraged ministers started targetting Pradyumna, as their counter attack. Each one of them shot sixty arrows at Pradyumna.

All the arrows so shot by the enemies over Pradyumna, were destroyed by him, with his own sharp arrows, before they could reach him. Thereafter Pradyumna took up a crescent arrow and killed the charioteer of Durdharu, in full view of all the demon warriors.

Then with the use of four knotted arrows also killed the four bourses of the chariot of Durdhara.

Thereafter, with the shooting of an arrow, he also cut off, the rope joining the chariot, the chatra and the flag were destroyed. Then shooting sixty arrows, he cut off the yokes, axles, and wheels of the chariot.

There after the Pradyamma shot an arrow built with feathers of eagles, which was very sharp and struck at the heart of Durdhara — who lived under the protection of others.

At this, Durdhara was deprived of his life. His lustre faded out and he fell down from the chariot seat. At that point of time he looked like a planet whose merits get exhausted.

Thereafter, the enraged Ketumall raising his eyebrows, with his grim face, suddenly pounced upon Pradyumna and shouted at him, “you stay on, you stay on.”

On hearing this, Pradyumna — the son of Shri Krishna was immensely enraged. Then he pouring the rain to arrows covered Ketumall with them on the same way as the clouds cover the mountain with fall of the showers of rain.

Having been wounded by Pradyumna - the great archer, Ketumali thought of killing Pradyumna and shot a cakra at him.

Finding the cakra with a thousand spokes, like those of the cakra of Shri Krishna, Pradyumna, jumped up and caught it in his hand and in full view of all cut off the head of Ketumall with the same cakra.

Witnessing the valorous deeds of the son of Rukmini, Indra the lord of gods was immensely suprised. At that point of time the Gandharvas and the apsaras showered the rain of flowers over Pradyumna.

At the death of Ketumall, Satruhanta and Pramardana pounced upon Pradyumna, with their army.

They started throwing the clubs, musala, cakra, prases, tomaras, arrows, bhindepalas, battle-axes, and the shining mudgaras, collectively at Pradyumna — the son of Shri Krishna.

The valorous Pradyumna too, displaying the proficency of his hands, cut into pieces all the weapons shot by the enemies at him.

Getting enraged, he killed thousands of elephantrs and the elephants riders, the chariots with charioteers and the horses, which were trampled upon, killing them all Pradyumna, with the use of his arrows, wounded the foot soldiers as well. There was none of the enemy warrior who had not been wounded with the arrows shot by him.

In this way, Pradyumna, churned the entire demon army and made the river of blood to flow with high waves.

The garlands of pearls appeared like the numerous raised waves. The fat and marrow appeared like the mud, chatras looked like the islands, and the arrows appeared like the whirlpools. The chariots looked like the river banks adding to its grace.

The armlets and the ear rings appeared like the tortoises in the river of blood, the flags looked like the fish, the elephants appeared there like the crocodiles, making the river horrible.

It was covered with the hair of the soldiers which appeared like the moss. The waist bands looked like the lotus stalks, the beautiful faces stood there on the blossomed lotus flowers. The moving flywisks looked like the moving wings of the swans. It appeared as if they were fanning the river.

The several heads of the elephants were spread in the river of blood like the Timi fish. The blood was flowing in the river with force. Pradyumna, the form of Ananga, had made the river of blood of flow which was difficult to cross, without any aim, inaccessible, and awful. It was difficult to be crossed by the lustreless people. It was filled with crocodiles in the form of weapons. It increased the boundaries limits of the territory of Yama.

Several of the great orchers had been churned by Pradyumna — the son of Rukmini. He also shot arrows at Satruhanta.

Then again Satruhanta shot an arrow at Pradyumna, which hit it at his chest.

Getting wounded with the arrow, the valorous Pradyumna, remained undisturbed. Then he took up a spear and shot it at Satruhanta who was standing at the death’s door.

Then the son of Rukmini shot the spear at Satruhanta, which was issuing fire flames. The Sakti (spear) thundering like the vajra of Indra, shattered the heart of Satruhanta who fell down on earth.

With the tearing out of the heart all his limbs were faded out. All his joints of the body were shattered. In that condition, the valorous Satruhanta, vomiting blood, fell down on earth.

Then Pradyumna, finding that Satruhanta had fallen, took his position in the war ground. He raised a miisala in his hand and then spoke.

“Keep on standing you like the war very much. What benefit would you desire by killing the poor soldiers? О evil minded one, you better fight with me and you cannot escape death.

You have been born in the Vrsni dynasty your father is our enemy. I shall surely kill his son after which he himself shall be killed.

О evil minded one, with his death all the gods shall vanish. Thus with the death of our enemy, all the Daityas and the Danavas shall feel delightful.

When you are killed with the use of my weapon, I shall offer oblation to the sons of Sambasura with your blood.

Today itself Rukmini — the daughter of Bhishmaka, learning of the death of her youthful son like you, shall surely be lamenting.

Now the hope of Shri Krishna, the holder of disc shall be dashed today. Learning about your death, the foolish humna shall surely end his life.”

Thus speaking he atonce attacked over Pradyumna, with a parigha. The illustrious and glorious Pradyumna, then having been thus hurt, lifted up of his chariot with both the hands, and reduced it to pieces by throwing it on the ground.

Pradyumna then jumped from that chariot fought like a soldier. Then he held his gada in his hands, the demon suddenly attacked the son of Rukmini. But Pradyumna cought hold of the gada shot by the Daitya Pramardana and killed him instantaneously.

At the killing of the Daitya Pramardana all the Daitya soldiers fled away. They fled like the elephants who flee at the sight of the lions and could not face Pradyumna.

As at the sight of the hunting dog the flock of sheep starts fleeing, similarly with the terror of Pradyumna, the Daitya army, feeling disguested deserted the battle ground.

All the costumes of the soldiers were soaked in blood, the hair was dishevelled. They had lost their grace. In such circumstances, the Daitya army tried to conceal itself like a woman in period.

The Daitya army, clad in costumes like a woman, having been injured with the arrows of Pradyumna, rushed towards the soldiers. At that point of time the soldiers were fearful. It was unable to witness the battle field. The army was inhaling deep sighs and intended to return to their abode instead of staying in the battle ground.

Here ends chapter — 105, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a supplementary of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the killing of the army and the couteers of Sambasura. (Vrs. 1- 84, P.T. - 9061)
