Janamejaya said:- О Vaismpayana- the great tcpas, now you kindly speak out the details of all the Manvantaras, their creation and their end.

О Brahman, I would like to know the life of each Manu and the length of each one of Manvantaras, correctly.

Vaishampayana said: О adorable one, the descendant of Kauravas, the details of the expansion of a Manvantara can not be narrated even in a hundred years. Therefore, you listen from me the brief about them.

О adorable descendant of the Kauravas, the Svayanbhana Manu, Svaracisa Manu, Unam Manu, Raivata Manu, have already passed. The name of the present Manu is Vaivasvata. Now I shall speak about the future Manus. О adorable one, the four Manus- Savarni Manu, Bhautya Manu and Raucya Manu, are known as Savarni Manus. О adorable one, whatever had I learnt from my preceptors about the fourteen Manus, I have narrated the same to you. Now I shall narrate their Rishis, sons and the Leods.

О king, in the Svayambhava Manvantara, there were Rishis different than the present Manvantara, who are known as Marici, Atri, Angira, Puhaha, Kratu, Pulastya and vasistha. In the Svayambhuva Manvantara, the different gods like Santaraja, Prakrti and Yama were worshipped. Svayambhuva Manu had ten strong sons named Agnidhra, Agnibahu, Medha, Medhatithi, Vasu, Jyotisman, Dyutiman, Havya, Savana and Putra. О king, I have described the first Manvantara to you.

О adorable one, in the Svarocis Manvantara the seven great Rishis named Aurava- the son of Vasistha, Stamba Kasyapa, Prana, Brhaspati, Datta and Niscayavana. All of them were the performers of great vratas. The gods were known as Tusita.

О adorable one, Mahatma, Svarocis Manu, had ten valorous sons known by the names of Haverdhra, Sukrti, Apa, MUrti, Ayasmaya Prathita, Nabhasya, Urja and Nabha. О lord of earth, thus the second Manvantara has been described by me.

О king, now I describe the third Manvantara, which you please listen. In this Manvantara named Uttama, the well known Vasistha had seven sons (Rsis), who were earlier the sons of Hiranyagarbha. They were quite illuShrious and were known by the name of Urja. In this way the Rishis have been highlighted by me. О kings I am now going to describe the ten sons of Uttama Manu, who were known by the names of Isa, Urja, Tanuja, Madhu, Madhana, Suci, Sukra, Saha, Nabhasya and Nabha. These were the ten sons of Nabha. Bhanu was the god. This is the third Manvantara described by me.

О Bharata, I am now going to relate the description of the fourth Manvantara, which you please listen. In this Manvantara named Tamasa, the Saptarsis were Prthu, Agni, Janyu, Dhata, Kapivan and Akapivan. Many of their sons have been mentioned in the Puranas. In the Tamasa Manvantara there were the gods called Satya. Tamasa Manu had ten very strong sons, known as Dyuti, Tapasya, Sutapa, Tapomtila, Tapodhana, Taparati, Kalmasa, Tanvi', Dhanvl and Parantapa.

All of them were owned by vayu. О king, I am now going to describe the fifth Manvantara called Raivata. In that Manvantara, Vedabahu, Yodughra, Vedasera, muni, Hiranyaroma, Parjanya, Somaputra, Urdhvabahu, Atri’s son and Satyanetra were the seven Rishis. The gods of that Manvantara were known as Abhutaraja, Prakrti, Pariplava and Raimya. In this way five Manvantaras have been described. Now I shall talk about the sons of Raivata Manu, which you please listen. Dhrtiman, Avyaya, Yukta, Taltvadarsi, Nirutsuka, Aranya, Prakasa, Nirmoha, Satyavak and Kavi were ten sons of Raivata Manu. Thus the fifth Manvantara has been described.

О lord of humans, now I am going of speak about the sixth (Caksusa) Manvantara, O’ adorable one, in the Caksusa Manvantara seven Rishis were known as Bhrgu, Nabha, Vivasvan, Sudhama, Virajd, Atinama and Sahistiu. О Rajendra, now you listen to the names of the gods of this Manvantara, their five ganas included Adya, Prabhuta, Rbhu Prthagbhava and Lokha, who were attached to the five gods, who lived in the heaven. All of them were the sons of Angira- the ascatic. All of them were illuShrious and noble sons. Their mother’s name was Nadvata. Caksus Manu had ten well known sons. О king, thus the sixth Manvantara has been described.

The seventh Manvantara is now being described. In the present times, the seven Rishis, named Atri, lord Vasistha, Maharsi Kasyapa, Gautama, Bhardvaja, Visvamitra and Rcika- the seventh one is Jamadagni.

Sadhya, Rudra, Visvedeva, Marut, Vasu, Aditya and both the Asvamkumaras- the son of surya, are all the gods of the present Vaivastava Manvantara. The great soul vaivasvat Manu has ten sons including Iksavaku.

O king of the Bharata race, all the Rishis who have been mentioned above, have a large number of sons and daughters, who have been scattered in the entire universe.

In all the Manvantaras, the aforesaid fortynine words move for the discipline and protection of the people.

At the expiry of each Manvantara twenty eight pavanas performing their duties, proceed on to the heaven and achieve the unobstructed Brahmaloka.

О Bharata, at the end of the Manvantara, other pavanas on the basis of their tapas take their places and fill up the vacancies. О Kaurava, I have described the past seven Manvantaras. О son of Bharata, now I shall speak about the future six (or seven) Manvantaras.

О adorable one, Savarni manus are five in number, you listen about them from me. One of them is the son of SUrya and four are the sons of Prajapati Paramesthi. All of them are the maternal grand sons of Daksa and sons of Priya- the daughter of Daksa. О king, all the four of them, after having performed hard tapas at the Meru mountain, come to be known as Meru- savarna.

The sons of Prajapati race, are known as Raucya, while those born of the womb of race from Bhiiti devi, are called Bhautya.

Now you listen about the seven Rishis who are presently lodged in the heaven and are to become the Rishis of Savarni Manvantara.

They are (Prosit) Rama, Vyasa, Diptiman, Asvathama of Bhardvdja gotra and son of Dronacarya, Saradvan- belonging to Gautama race - known as krpacraya, Galava of Kausika gotra besides Ruru - of Kasyapa gotra.

They deserve to be adored like Brahma and are believed to be the seven Rishis of the future.

These Saptrsis who are pure by birth, tapas, mantras grammar reside in the Brahmaloka.

These Rishis by knowing everything about the past, present and future because of their divine sight, become famous and they discuss collectively the Paramatma-tallva.

They are also well known because of the mantras, grammar etc., fortunes, have become popular everywhere. A Brahmana gets entitled to welfare by reciting the names of these Rishis who feed (the universe) and then noble deeds, besides their names.

All the seven of them are known as saptarsis because of the seven qualities possessed by them. They passes long life, exell in the mantras, all competent and are far sighted as well.

Because of their enormous wisdom, they themselves experience the importance of Dharma and they make the gotras to continue, they are truthful, dedicated to their own dharma, initiate all the deeds, asramas of the people towards dharma.

At the time of the decline of the dharma the decandants of these Rishis alone divert the people towards dharma.

All the seven Rishis are bestowers of the boons, other people seek (boons) from them. Therefore while thinking about these fois, no one can know about their birth nor the age.

О king, I have talked about the saptarsis in brief. О excellent one, now you listen to me about the future sons of Savarni Manu.

A person, who getting up early in the morning, recites the names of the past and the future Rishis, he always is blessed with blessings, besides enjoying the long life and enormous glory, О Bull of the Bharata race, At that point of time the gods will have five ganas.

Thus I have described the name of the past and the future Manus. О excellent among the humans. These Manus, because of the influence of their tapas, after completion of a thousand caturyugi, rule the earth upto the ocean. In different Manvantaras different people meet with their end.

Here ends Chapter 7 of the Harivansa Parva, of the Harivansa Purana, of the khila-bhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to description of Manvantaras. (Vrs. 1-90, P.T. 486)
