Akrlira’s return from Braj with Shri Krishna and Balarama

Vaishampayana spoke: О Janamejaya, entering the abode of Nandagopa, with Shri Krishna, Akrura — the lord of charities, called for all the young and old cowherds. Then he spoke to them besides Krishna and Balarama with delight, “O excellent ones, we shall go to Mathura tomorrow. You would be quite comfortable on reaching there.

Besides all the cowherds, of Braj shall also go to Mathura to pay the annual tax to Kamsa, with their families.

The bow sacrifice of Kamsa is going to be performed there with great pomp and show, which you should witness, besides meeting your own relatives.

Both the brothers (Shri Krishna and Balarama, shall also meet your father who has grown old because of the killing of his sons.

The evil minded Kamsa has always tortured him. Presently in the old age, the flesh and blood of your father has been dried up and he has grown old facing many painful situations.

The terror of Kamsa is on the one hand which causes disturbance to him, and on the other hand he has been separated from both of you. Therefore becoming anxious for you he bums in the fire of separation through out the day and night.

О Govinda, you will also meet your mother Devaki, reaching there. Her breasts have never been sucked by any one of her sons. She is the goddess like woman, getting faded out, is suffering badly. She suffers the separation from her son, like the calf separated from the cows.

The tears flow from the eyes of the miserable mother. She remains in dirty clothes and appears like the moon eclipsed by Rdhu.

She was always worried and anxious to meet you. She always waited for your arrival on every day. The ascetic lady has become weak in grief for you.

О lord, she was separated from you during childhood itself, therefore she could not be clever enough to enjoy the nectar of your sweet talk. She is not at all aware of your form, she has been deprived of a look of your resplendent moon like face.

О excellent one, when Devaki is suffering so much after giving birth to you, than what is use of her giving birth to a son? It would have been better for her to remain childless.

The childless woman has a single grief that she is childless, but when a woman even after giving birth to a son is deprieved of the reward of the same, then she suffers for want of a son.

One who had an illustrious and virtuous son like Indra who provides protection to others, such a mother should not be made to suffer.

О brother, your old parents are serving as slaves to others. The evil minded Kariisa, badly scolds them daily because of you.

The mother Devaki, who held you in her womb is adorable like the mother earth who bears the burden of all. Then as you redeemed the earth from water, similarly you should also redeem Devaki who is drowned in water like grief.

О Krishna the old Vasudeva, to whom the son is quite dear and who should enjoy all the comforts, should be provided the comfort of meeting with his son, which would earn you great merit.

О Krishna, as you had subjugated the serpent living in a tank in the river Yamuna, and had uprooted the mountain Govardhana, as you had killed the powerful demon Asisthasura, as you killed the wicked horse Kesl, who killed others, similarly making all the efforts, you redeem your parents, who are suffering badly, earning great merits.

The people who witnessed your father being denounced in the court of Kamsa, all of them feel grieved, shedding tears from their eyes.

О Krishna, DevakT your mother, under compulsion faces enormous miseries caused to her by Kamsa including killing of her newly born sons.

The scriptures expect that all the sons should get themselves relieved of the parental debt, by adequetely serving them.

О sinless Krishna, in case you are so graceful over you parents, then they would forget alout their past miseries and you will earn great merit.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening carefully to the words of Akriira, the illustrious Shri Krishna spoke to the immensely valorous Akriira, “very well. All of us will get along with you.” He was not at all overpowered with anger.

Nanda and other cowherds collected there and listening to the words of Akriira, got ready to proceed to Mathura at the command of Kamsa.

The cowherds of Braj, got ready for the journey, carrying the materials for gift, all the senior cowhurds departed for Braj.

They rollected the materials like annual tax, the bullocks driving the carts, buffaloes, ghee, milk, and curd, according to their respective capacity and placing the annual tax in the bullock-carts, all the Gopa-chiefs collected at the door of Nandagopa for proceeding on to the journey.

Akrura remained awake throughout the night talking with Krishna. Balarama — the son of Rohini was also with them.

Then the spotless dawn broke with the issue of the sweet notes by the birds with the end of night the moon collected all his rays. The sky was filled with the redness of the dawn. The group of constellations was set with the redness of the dawn. The group of constellations was set with the moving breeze mixed with the dew - drops made the earth wet. The stars were faded out having lost their shine like a sleeping person with the sunrise, the form of night (darkness) disappeared.

The cool rays of the moon disappeared making the moon lusterless. On the one hand, the moon started disappearing, while the sun started increasing its shine.

The cows were spread over the paths of Braj. With the moving of the churning rods in every house, the rumbling sound was heard. The young calves were trained having been bound with the ropes. The streets of Braj were crowded with the cowherds. At that point of time, The cowherds, placing the huge vases of curd and milk over the carts, started driving them with speed.

Shri Krishna, Balarama and Akriira, the giver of enormous daksina, all the three of them like the lords of the three worlds, moved on mounted over the chariot.

Reaching the bank of the Yamuna Akriira said to Shri Krishna, ”0 brother, halt the chariot here. Make efforts to control the horses and wait for me.

О excellent one, serving the horses with grass and feed, taking good care of their ornaments and the chariot, you waits for me for a moment.

By that time let me offer prayer to Nagaraja Ananta — the lord of the universe with the reciting of the Bhagavata mantras.

He is the Bhagavata god, has an invisible form, is the creator of the universe besides being its leader. I shall bow in reverance to him.

After having an audience with Nagaraja Sesa the refuge of Svastika, endowed with Shri, and consume his poison like the nectar, exactly in the same way as the gods consume nectar. A croud of serpents could be found around the serpent Sesa, for the sake of peace.

I, as a Nagaraja, shall return from the tank, both the brothers should wait for me here till then and wait for me.”

At this Shri Krishna spoke with delight, О religious minded great soul, you go and return quickly, we shall not be able to wait for you for long.”

Then Akrura, who gave away enormous daksina entered the water of Yamuna and had a chip in the same, when he witnessed the Nagaloka, in the nether world resembling the earth.

He found the serpent Sesa with a thousand hoods, close to him was a raised fluttering golden banner embossed with a tala tree. The forepart of one of his hand was holding a plough, and a musala was resting over the belly.

His seat and the complexion of his body was white. His body was covered with blue garments. One of his ears was adorned with an ear ring. He was sleeping like an intoxicated person. His eyes were pleasent like the blossomed lotus flowers.

He was seated over a beautiful asana, having an imaginary serpent body, quite appropriately. Lord Ananta, who carried the earth was adorned with two svastika and a varaha marks.

His head was adorned with a golden crown and a beautiful plume, which was tilted to the left, a little, but appeared graceful. His chest was decorted with the garland of golden lotus flowers.

He could subjugate the enemies with ease. The lustre of his body resembled the white lustre of Visnu or the lightening of the clouds. He illuminated with his own lustre.

Akrura found the lord of the ocean and the protector of the serpents, lord Sesa who was seated there and was being adored by the serpents like vasuki and others.

The serpents named Kambala and Asvatara were moving fly whishes, held in their hands over Anantadeva, who was seated there.

Nagaraja Vasuki was surrounded by the serpents of Karkotaka spices, who served him as ministers and looked graceful.

He visualised that the serpents bathed Nagaraja again with the pitchers of gold covered with the lotus flowers and filled water from the ocean.

He found lord Visnu clad in yellow lower garment resting in the lap of Sesa, quite comfortably. The lustre of his body resembled the clouds and his chest was adorned with the Srvvatsa mark.

He found other gods there, who were bright like the moon and resembled Samkarsana. All of them were seated there without the divine seats.

Akrura, suddenly desired to spesk to Shri Krishna there, but the lord because of his divine powers paralysed his speech.

Then realising the glory of the eternal Lord of serpents, Akrura — the lord of charities and daksina, feeling surprised, raised himself out of the water.

Rising himself up, he found that both the brothers Balarama and Krishna were seated in the chariot and were looking at each other. Both of them had astonishing forms.

Then out of anxiety Akrura again had a dip in the water and reached there again, where lord Ananta clad in blue costumes was being adored.

Again he found lord Krishna seated in the lap of thuosand hooded serpent Sesa, who was being worshipped.

Then mentally reciting a mantra, Akrura — the giver of enormous charities, returned to the chariot by the same path.

Then Shri Krishna having been filled with delight went to Akrura and asked him”, you tell me about the story of lord Ananta in the tank. How was it?

You took a lot of time because of your attachment to meditation. I feel that you visualised something astonishing, because of which your heart was stablished in meditation.”

Replying to the talk of Shri Krishna, Akriira said, “In this mobile and immobile world, what would be more surprising than you?

О Shri Krishna, I have witnessed there a surprise, which cannot be found on earth. Whatever surprise was found by me there, the same surprise is found by me here and am absorbed in the same.

O Krishna, I have met here in person with the surprise of the three worlds. I cannot visualise a surprise, better than this.

Therefore, о lord, let us move to Mathura, the city of Kamsa. Before the sun is set, we should reach there.

Here ends chapter — 26, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata relating to Akrura return from Braj with Shri Krishna and Balarama. (Vrs. 1-71, P.T. = 4256)
