Killing of Kuvalyapldha, the Mahavata, and arrival of Krishna and Balarama in wrestling chamber

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, after the end of that day, the next day arose. The vast wrestling ground was filled with the people of the town.

Whatever the platforms had been left out were decorated with paintings as well as the octagunal pillars.

The apartments with platforms, the pedestals had been made at their gates with the doors and the iron chains. The ventilators were in the design of crescents. The platforms and the adjoining rooms were provided with the excellent beds.

In the chambers with platforms, had their doors to the east. All of them were quite beautiful and having the curtains of the fine cloth. They were decorated with flower garlands and the strings of beads. The graceful and decorated chambers with pedestals beautiful like the clouds of the winter season. The beautiful wrestlers were seated in them in appropriate places, who had been well decorated for the wrestling. The decoration with them resembled the ocean with the clouds (flying in the sky).

There were the separate arrangements for the professional artisans of the same trade. The flags continuously fluttered over their platforms with their apparatus embossed over their flags. With those flags, the platforms appeared like the mountains.

For the ladies of the harem, several of the balconies were made, which were decorated with golden paintings and shone of the gems.

The balconies which were of gems, had the flags fluttering over their tops and with them the sky appeared to be the mountains wings.

The balconies or theatres had enough of flywhisks, garlands, the ornaments with dangling sound, astonishing types of gems issing surprising types of lutre which was spreading everywhere.

Separate platforms had been made for the female demons, which had been covered with beautiful sheets. All of them looked graceful like the planes. The prominent harlots added to their beauty.

The place was decorated with famous seats, beds of gold, and bed sheets, besides the carpets with bunches of flowers.

The pitchers of gold were filled with water. The places with eatables had been decorated. The baskets filled with fruits had been kept there, which could be used for breakfast.

There were several other platforms, in which were tied with the bundles of wood. The beautiful beds were arranged over them. Hundreds and thousands of such platforms had been made there.

The balconies of the houses were used as the dancing halls for the women. The fine curtains with newark had been hung at the doors, by which those seated insided could have a clear view of the things outside. Those dancing halls appeared like the royalgeese in the sky.

The place for sight seeing that was built for Kamsa, was shining excessively with grace. Its door opened to the east. A pleasent curtain was placed over its door. The chamber looked fine like the Meru mountain. Its pillars had been decorated with gold and were of special attraction.

Several beautiful paintings were placed in that chamber, besides the garland of beads. There should be special arrangements for the drawing room of the kings and all of them were available there.

The wrestling hall was filled with various types of people whose voice was being echoed, appeared like the great ocean with its ever moving high waves. In a short while it was silence there everywhere. The king Kamsa reached the wrestling chamber and command, “The elephant Kuvalaypldha should stand at the enterance gate.

He was clad in two white garments. The white fans as well the while flywhisks were being moved over him. The while crown was shining over his head. Therefore, he looked like the moon with while clouds.

After he was seated comfortably over the lion throne, then all the people of the kingdom shouted the slogans of victory for the intelligent and beautiful king, blessing him at the same time.

Thereafter the wrestlers entered the wrestling ground. Their costumes were fluttering. The valorous wrestlers, entered separately in three classess.

Thereafter with the deafening sound of the playing or the musical instruments, coupled with the thunders of the wrestlers and patting of the thighs, was heard. At the same time both the delightful sons of Vasudeva reached the gate of the wrestling chamber.

Both of them were wearing the dress of cowherds. Their limbs were quite charming. Having been clad in beautiful clothes, both of them looked graceful. The divine sandalpaste had been applied over their bodies. The flower garlands were decorating their heads and the chests. Their arms alone served them as their weapons. Both of them appeared like twins and were patting their thighs with the both hands.

Both of them had beautiful faces and were advancing quite anxiously towards the gate of wrestling chamber, but both of them were suddenly stopped from advancing with the intoxicated elephant king at the poking of the driver.

The intoxicated elephant was quite, wicked and at the provoking of the driver, it squeezed its trank and tried to kill both Shri Krishna and Balarama.

With the terrorist attack of the elephant, Shri Krishna laughed and started denouncing the plan of Kamsa (to kill them).

He said, “Surely it appears that he is getting anxious to proceed to the abode of Yama and he desires me to be trampled upon by this elephant.”

Thereafter the elephant thundering like the cloud, when approched nearer, then lord Govinda started clapping his hands, while jumping.

After treating the sound resembling the thundering of the elephant with the patting of his thighs, he caught hold of his trunk suddenly, which issued the fountains of water, and pressed it against his chest.

Then Shri Krishna, passing through both his tasks, he reached the middle of both his feet and as the wind shatters the clouds here and there, similarly he started troubling the elephant, making it restless.

Then he, moving from forepart of the elephant’s trunk, saving himself from the tips of the elephant tusks, and escaping from the feet of the tusker, he came out. Then Shri Krishna started pulling the elephant from the back side, by his tail.

The elephant of the gigantic proportions, was irritated, and having failed to kill Krishna was churned with its own limbs and started trumpeting aloud.

Then it fell on its both the knees. Both his tusks striking with the earth were shaken from the roots, which caused immense pain to the elephant. In anger the fluid started flowing from his, temples, like the clouds of the rainy season.

Then Shri Krishna, after playing with the elephant like a child, preserving enmity in his mind against Kamsa thought of killing the elephant Kuvalayapidha.

Then he uprooted one of his tusks pulling it out placing his feet at his head and started beating it with the same tusk.

With the strikes of the Vajra — like tusk, the elephant started releasing dung and urine, pathetically crying at the same time.

Shri Krishna then shattered the elephant and streams of blood started flushing out of its temples.

On the other hand, Balarama started dragging the elephant holding its tail like Garuda pulling the snake, half of whose body is pressed under a stone slab.

Killing the elephant, attacking it with its own tusk, he also killed the elephant driver.

Then Kuvalayapidha the best among the elephants, getting relieved of the tusks, crying in pain, fell down on earth with its Mahavata, like the mountain falling with the striking of vajra.

Thereafter both the valorous warriors, holding the pillars of the gate, also killed the foot soldiers, who gurarded the elephant.

Killing them all, both the brothers, entered the wrestling chamber and both of them looked like the Asvinikumaras having arrived on earth from the heaven.

At that point of time, Yadavas of Vrsni, Andhaka, and Bhoja dynasties, looked at Shri Krishna and Balarama who were adorned with the flower garland around their necks. Both the brothers, delighted the audience there with their thunders, joyful roars, besides clapping of hands.

O Bharata, Bhojaraja, having the useless intelligence noticing the presence of both the brother, and the love and affection expressed for them by the people, present there, felt extremely defected.

In this way the lotus eyed Krishna after killing the trumpeting elephant Kuvalayapidha, entered with his brother, the crowd of the people who had collected there.

Here ends chapter — 29, of the Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purina, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the killing of kuvalayapidha and arrival of Krishna and Balarama in the wrestling chamber. (Vrs. 1-44, P.T. = 4480)
