Speeches of Jarasandha and Sunltha in the assembly of the rulers





Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, finding the arrival of Shri Krishna who never fell from his principle with Garuda, all the rulers who had arrived there, were plunged in anxiety.

О king, the terrific and strong rulers, were well versed in polity, consulted among themselves in a gathering collectively.

Then as the gods assemble in the assembly of gods, similarly the excellent rulers went to the golden assembly, of Bhishmaka and got themselves seated over the best of seats, covered by the excellent cloth.

The immensely illustrious, valorous, and strong Jarasandha started delivering speech as Indra — the lord of gods addresses the gods.

Jarasandha said: О excellent rulers, and the best orators, present in this assembly, I am speaking here according to my own wisdom, which should be heard by the wise rulers as well as the wise king Bhishmaka.

Shri Krishna, son of Vasudeva, has arrived in Kundanpur, with Garuda quite illustrious. He is quite illustrious, valorous and the son of Vasudeva. He, surrounded by Yadavas, has arrived here to achieve the princess to this place. He will make all the efforts to get the girl.

О excellent rulers, only the noble means, which result in uplifting should be used here. You must think over the same keeping in view your weakness and strength.

Both the sons of Vasudeva, are immensely valorous. Both of them had arrived over the Gomantaka mountain with out Garuda, walking on foot. Inspite of that they fought a grave battle, which is quite well known to you.

Presently, when they are accompanied with the warriors of Vrsnl and Yadu VamsI, BhojavamsI and Andhaka VrnsI, and will fight with them, what type of war would be fought by them, you can well imagine.

In order to get the princess, if a war is fought, who would be able to stand before lord Visnu — accompanied with the gods?

Even if the girl is not given to him, then he in the company of gods, shall take her forcibly.

It is heard that in ancient times, the earth had been submerged into the vast ocean and reached the under world. At that point of time, the primmeval cause of the universe, and the influential Visnu, taking to the form of Varaha had rescued her. During those days the Daitya king Hiranyaksa had also been killed by the boar from the Visnu.

The Daitya king Hiranyakasipu was invincible from the demons as well as the gods. The Rsts, Kinnaras and Gandharvas too could not kill him. He was also invincible from the Yaksas, Raksas as well as the human beings. He could neither be killed in the sky nor on earth. He also could not be killed during the day or the night. He was beyond destruction by the dry or the wet weapons.

The Daityaraja was invincible in the three worlds. Inspite of that, Visnu in earlier times, taking to the form of Narasimha, killed him.

Thereafter, once upon a time, the valorous Visnu was born as the son of the sage Kasyapa from his wife Aditi, taking to the form of Vamana. He binding the asura Bali with the noose of truth, forced him to dwell in the netheir world.

By the grace of lord Dattatreya, the body of Angira, the son of Krtavirya was bestowed with a thousand arms. He was intoxicated because of the royal force.

(For his subjugation,) during the period between the end of Tretayuga and the start of Dvapara, lord Visnu appeared from the womb of Renuka. He was the best the holder of weapons, extremely illustrious, son of Jamadagni, and came to be known as Parasurama.

In this way lord Visnu taking to a deceitful form having been born in the Hayaheya dynasty, killed the king Kartvirya the lord of the seven island with his battle axe.

Thereafter he incarnated in the Iksavaku dynasty as Shri Rama — the son of Dasaratha. He killed the demon king Ravana, who in earlier times had conquered the three worlds.

In ancient times, in Satyayuga, the war known as Tarakamaya was fought. At that point of time, the valorous Visnu appearing with eight arms, arrived there mounted over Garuda. The asuras who had been intoxicated with pride were killed by him in the war. The demon Kalanemi who frightened the gods was also killed at his hands.

The entire universe is like form of Visnu, with the use of his yogic power and the illustrious cakra, he killed the Daitya.

Many asuras have been killed at the hand of Krishna, at the time of whose death he had arrived. The immensely strong and powerful Pralamba and Dhenuka demons were also killed by him, during his childhood itself.

Besides these, Piitana, KesI, Yamalar- juna, Kuvalayapldha, elephant, Canura, Mustika besides Karhsa — the best of warriors had been killed by the son of Devaki. During that time, he sported as a cowherd.

Thus influenced Visnu had also taken many deceitful forms from time to time in the past.

Therefore, I for the sake of your benefit, have spoken these words, that Krishna is none else than Visnu and the destroyer of the Daityas. This is what I beleive.

He is the cause of the creation of the universe, the eternal — Purusa and imperishable lord Narayana. He is the creator of all the bhutas, besides being the visible and invisible supreme soul. All the three worlds getting united cannot defeat him. The whole world bows at his feet. He is beyond beginnig, middle and end, he is indestructible, imperishable, and unblemished. He is selfborn, without birth, mobile as well immobile being invincible from the living beings. He is the destroyer of Indra’s enemies, lord of the three worlds and Trivikrama Visnu.

This is the resolve of my wisdom. The same Visnu has appeared in the high royal and chakravarti race of the kings. Otherwise, how can anyone else use Garuda as his vehicle?

Particularly when lord Janardana, would be bent upon to display his prowess, for the achieving of the princess, then who is the valorous person, to stand before Garuda?

Lord Visnu has appeared in person for participate in the Svayambara. The grave obstruction that has appeared before us with the arrival of Visnu has been highlighted by me. All of you should also think over it and do what ever you like.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, after the king of Magadha ended his speech, then the immensely intelligent Surdtha spoke thus.

Sunltha said: The valorous king of Magadha has spoken correctly. The incident that took place near Gomantaka mountain, and the extremely difficult prowess displayed by Balarama and Krishna, had been witnessed by all the rulers themselves.

The vast army comprising of elephants, horses, chariots as well as the foot soldiers carrying flags, was reduced to ashes with the use of cakra and the plough.

Therefore, the king of Magadha has spoken on the future course of happenings. Whatever terrible situation arose has (at Gomantaka mountain) has been recalled by Magaaharaja and has spoken the words appropriate to the time. At that point of time both Balarama and Shri Krishna were moving on foot while fighting. Inspite of that huge destruction of the vast army took place, which could not be stopped.

О excellent rulers, the influence caused by the arrival of Garuda, is quite well known to you. The birds flying in the sky started rotating with the force of the wind produced by the wings of Garuda.

All the oceans were disturbed. The mountains started shaking besides the earth. All the people were frightened with the distrubance so caused.

When Kesava adorning his head with a crown would fight riding on Garuda, then how could a person like me stand before him?

Svayambara is a delightful festival for the kings, which was introduced by the excellent kings for the sake of dharma and glory.

But the kings, after arriving in Kundanapur, again an oppurtunity for waging a war is intending to arrive.

In case the princess Rukmini, accepts some other king out of the vast gathering then who is king to face the strength of the arms of Shri Krishna?

In this festival of Svayambara, the possibility of a war is a great blemish and all of you have been informed about the same. Shri Krishna and all other rulers have arrived here for the sake of svayambara.

But the arrival of Shri Krishna is proving to be ignobe, as has been pointed by Magadharaja.

Here ends chapter — 48, of Visnu Parva of the Harivariisa Purana a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the speeches of Jarasandha and Sunltha at the time of Svayambara. (Vrs. 1-51, P.T. = 5636)
