Sending of the king Salava as messenger to Kalayavana by Jarasandha

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, Shri Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, left the place and after his departure, all the monarchs, adorning their limbs with ornaments, decorated themselvse like Devendra proceeded on to the court of Bhishmaka in order to advice him. They were extremely happy at the departure of Shri Krishna.

Reaching the assembly, they took their seats comfortably. Finding the monarchs beaming like the sun and the moon. Bhishmaka, who had been like a lion among the monarchs, who always spoke appropriate words based on polity.

He said, “O monarchs, realising the danger that appeared in the Svayambara due to the arrival of Shri Krishna, (I have postponed) the function. Therefore, all of you kindly forgive an old person like me for my sin. I am the one who has already been burnt by the fire of the destiny, like a tree. (A svayambara in which there is a possibility of voilence, it cannot be successful.”

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus speaking, Bhishmaka sent off all the monarchs with due honour. Some of the monarchs belonged to Madhya Desa, some were from the east, some from the north. They were all sent of gracefully.

All the valorous monarchs, also feeling delighted, honouring the king Bhishmaka returned to their respective places.

Jarasandha, Sunitha, the valorous Dantavaktra, Salva the lord of Saubha, the king Mahakurma, Kratha and Kausika and a few other monarchs of the excellent dynasties, besides Rajarsi Venudari, and the king of Kashmir, did not move in order to have secret talk with Bhishmaka in seclusion.

Finding them held up, the valorous king Bhismaka who was Rcijadhiraja, spoke with a loveable and affectionate heart to the monarchs who had been standing there. His speech was dubbed in dharma, artha, kama, besides being sweet (like honey) and adorned with the six gunas like compromise, struggle etc. besides the polity.

Bhismaka said — “Looking at the lords of earth like you, and listening from you the words filled with polity, I have acted in this way. All of you are noble people. Therefore all of you will pleasentiy tolarate my performance, forgiving me at the same time. I shall myself always feel guilty.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus speaking, the learned Bhismaka, who was well versed in polity, pointing at his son spoke.

Bhishmaka said — О monarchs, observing the performance of my son, my eyes have become anxious with fear. I consider them to be children devoid of matured wisdom. In my view Krishna is the supreme Purusa.

He is the best of the glorious people. He has established his immense glory and popularity. He had displayed the strength of his arms.

Graceful is Devaki — the best of the ladies, who is the foremost of all the women in the three worlds and has given birth to such a virtous son, who is the tresure of glory, adorable by the gods, possessing the eyes like the lotus petals. She kept Krishna in her womb, and after giving birth to him looks at his face with affection.”

Vaisarhpayana said — О Janamejaya, thus finding Bhishma speaking repeatedly (in praise of Krishna) the glorious king Salva spoke in sweet voice assuring the monarch.

Salva said — О Rajendra, (why are you remorseful?) Your son shatters the pride of his enemies, (you should be proud of him.) О king, a Ksatriya is surely victorious in the battle ground.

This is the decisive fate of the humans. This is sanatana-dharma. Except Balarama and Krishna who is there on earth, who would be able to face your valorous son?

This valorous warrior, holding the bow in his hand can alone can face in the battle field the groups of charioteers, other warriors and can obstruct the enemies.

With the strength of his arms, he would be invincible for the gods, and would use the terrible Bhargava weapon, who at that time would be able to face the attack of this great warriors?

О Maharaja your son is well versed in the tattvas of all the sastras, he does not fight with Krishna taking him to be Isvara and a god.

О lord of the monarchs, it is Kalayavana alone who could be victorious over Krishna, and is the lord of Yavanas. He is invincible from Shri Krishna.

The sage Gargya had performed extremely difficult, terrific and severe tapas for twelve years for Lord Rudra. During those days, he lived only consuming the powder of iron. Thus pleasing Rudradeva in this way, he sought for a son from him. He also prayed to lord Siva that he should be invincible from the people born in Mathura. Then lord Rudra granted him the desired boon. The sage Gargya therefore was bestowed with a son as desired by him.

In this way, the illustrious son of Gargya, under the influence of the boon of Rudradeva, was born. He is particularly invincible from the people of Mathura.

Shri Krishna, inspite of his being so powerful, was born in Mathura. Therefore, in case Kalayavana attacks Mathura, he would surely overpower Krishna.

О rulers, in case you take my words to be appropriate, then send a messenger to the city of the ruler of Yavanas.”

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, listening to the words of the lord of saubha plane, king Sdlva, all rulers, feeling delighted delightfully spoke to Jarasandha, “we shall surely act accordingly.”

О king, listening to the talk to the monarchs, having been reminded of the words of the divine voice from the sky, Jarasandha the lord of earth felt sad.

Jarasandha said — “Till date all the monarchs getting frightened, used to take refuge with me and with my cooperation, they could get back their countries, army and vehicles.

But presently all the monarchs are inspiring me to take refuge with an other monarch as a passinate women getting jealous with her husband, embraces an other men leaving her husband. (Similarly, I instead of depending on my own strength, am getting ready to seek help from others).

Alas! the destiny is so powerful. It cannot be reversed, because today, I, getting afraid of Shri Krishna am taking refuge with another powerful king.

Surely, I have been deprieved of the stengh. I shall therfore have to take help of others. But it would be better for me to embrace death, than living (like this). О rulers, I shall never take refuge with others.

Irrespective of the fact whether it is Shri Krishna, Balarama or anyother king, who so ever attacks me, I shall face him with courage. As has been ordained by the divine voice from the sky, that there is some one else to kill me.

With my wisdom, I resolve that this is the path to be followed by the noble people, contraiy to this I am unable to take refuge from others.

Shri Krishna should cause no harm to the noble monarchs like you, with this end in view I can agree to send a messenger to (Kalayavana).

О best of monarchs, such a messenger should move by the sky way, so that. Shri Krishna is unable to obstruct him in his journey. You should think over it quite deeply and then send a messenger to Kalayavana.

This glorious Salva, the lord of Saubha, is illustrious like the sun, moon and the fire. He is resplendant like sun and the moon. He moves to his city by his plane.

Serving as a messenger on our behalf, you should speak appropriately on our behalf, as a result of which when, at the start of our war with Krishna Kalayavana should join our forces during the war.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, then the king Jarasandha, said to valorous Salva, the owner of the Saubha plane, “O adorable one, you go and thus help all the monarchs.

You should adopt such a policy by which the king of Yavana invades (Mathura) overpowers Krishna and please us”

Thus giving messege to all and honouring Bhishmaka appropriatly the king Jarasandha returned to his capital with his army.

Thereafter, the excellent king Salva, offering due respect to all left by air by his plane which moved with the speed of the wind.

All the monarchs hailing from the southern parts of India also followed Jarasandha, for some distance and thereafter, they left for their respective places.

The king Bhishmaka together with his son Rukmi, thinking about Salva and Jarasandha besides their evil designs, thought of Shri Krishna, feeling miserable, started living in their abode.

When the chaste Rukmini, came to know of the postponement of the svayambara because of the arrival of Shri Krishna, and also learnt of the evil designs of the monarchs, then she went to her handmaids and lowering her head in shame, uttered, “O handmaids, except the lotus eyed Krishna, I can not serve as a wife to any other king. This is the truth.”

Here ends chapter — 52, of Harivamsa Parva of Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the sending of the King Salva as messenger to kalayavana, by Jarasandha. (Vrs. 1-51, P.T. = 5927)
