Garuda’s departure for viewing the site of Kusasthali, welcome of Shri Krishna and return of Garuda

Janamejaya said — On return of Shri Krishna who had been valorous like Indra, from Vidarbha, then why did he take Garuda with him. What did he do reaching there?

О great sage, why did the valorous Shri Krishna return to Mathura, mounted over Garuda? I have a doubt about this in my mind. You kindly remove it correctly.

Vaishampayana said — О monarch, the immensely resplendent Garuda, the son of Vinata, reaching the city of Vidarbha, performed such a task, which was beyond the human power.

О lord Shri Krishna on his way to Mathura from Vidarbha, was on the midway and had not reached Mathura, then the immensely illustrious Garuda, thought, in his mind, “that Shri Krishna, the god of gods had declared that he shall go to Mathura — which is ruled by Ugrasena — the king of the Bhoja dynasty. On hearing that, I too desired to go with him, thus thinking an idea struck in his mind. Then Garuda, with folded hands, spoke to lord Krishna.

Garuda said — О lord, I shall go to the city of Kusasthali, ruled by the monarch Raivata. The charming Raivata mountain is located there, where a beautiful garden resembling the Nandanavana is also located.

The Raivata city is lodged with the base of the mountain and the sea shore, which has been destroyed by Rukrnl. A large number of trees creepers and slerbs have grown there. The flower dust add to the glory of the place.

The place is filled with the serpents as well as the elephants. The bears and the monkeys enjoy the forest. Herds of boars, buffeloes, and the deer, live there.

Inspecting the land from all the sides, I shall observe whether it is suitable for living or not. In case the city is found by me to be suitable for you and for the building of an excellent city suitable for you, then I shall remove all the thorns which could be obstruct the building of a city and I shall then return to you.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus expressing his intention, offering his salutation to Janardana, the valorous Garuda, flew towards the western region, offering his salutation to lord Janardana.

On the other hand Shri Krishna too reached Mathura with the people of Yadu race. At that point of time the king Ugrasena, with the people of Mathura as well as the female dancers, welcomed Shri Krishna, who had arrived with his well - built people.

Janamejaya said — Several of the rulers gathering themselves had crowned Shri Krishna as the king. What was the reaction of the king Ugrasena, on hearing this news?

Vaishampayana said — Several of the excellent rulers had collectively crowned Shri Krishna as the king. Citrangada had arrived as the messenger of Indra, in order to convey his views. Each and every king was given a lakh of gold coins as a reward. Those who had the position of Rajendra, received ten crores of gold coins, while ordinary people were given ten thousand coins each. All those who reached there, did not return empty handed. Sarhkha — the lord of treasures had reached there in the form of a Yadava, who distributed the riches as per the desire of the receivers. All the gods present there supported him.

Listening to the news from his own kiths and kins as well as from his spices, Ugrasena, arranged for special puja in the temples of the gods.

On both the sides of the palace of Vasudeva, arches were made. The dancers and performers then started singing and dancing.

The king Ugrasena, decorated the court of Kamsa with the astonishing types of cloths, the flags and the banners.

All the places in the city were got decorated with flags and banners by Bhojaraja. All the gopuras and the gates were white — washed. Thus the king Ugrasena, got a palace, a lion throne and a palace built for the sake of Shri Krishna.

О Rajendra, there was dancing and singing everywhere in the city. The water mixed with paste was sprinkled over the royal roads and the pitchers filled with sandal water, were placed on all the four quarters. These pitchers were decorated with garlands of forest flowers as well as the banners.

The king Ugrasena had spread cloth over the roads, besides suitably placing the garland of flowers. The insence of Agaru, sandal and pine trees were burnt. At places resin, and raw sugar were being burnt.

The groups of old ladies were reciting the welfare songs. At the same time the young damsels were seated in their abodes carrying arghya for the welfare of Shri Krishna.

Thus king Ugrasena, arranged for the festivitive in the city went to the place of Vasudeva and conveyed to him, the pleasent news about the crowning and arrival of Shri Krishna in Mathura. Then he together with Balarama, went to Shri Krishna. (27-28)

О king in the mean time high sound of the blowing of couch was found. Listening to the sound of blowing of Pancajanya couch, the people of Mathura, including women, children, old, Siitas, Magadhas, making Balarama to be the leader came out of the city carrying padya and arghya. The king Ugrasena accompanied them.

Reaching the road from where Shri Krishna was visible, Ugrasena, got down from his chariot and started walking on foot.

He found lord Krishna was mounted over a divine chariot. He was adorned with the divine ornaments. All his limbs were resplendent with lustre of the gems studded in the ornaments worn by him. The long garland of flowers was hanging over his chest. Shri Hari taking to the divine form, appeared like the sun. The flywhisks and the fans wer being moved on both his sides. An umbrella was held over his head. The flag embossed with Garuda was fluttering over the chariot. He possessed all the divine symptoms. He was resplendent like the sun having drawn near. He appeared with an astonishing grace. At that point of time it was difficult to have a look at Hari.

О Rajendra, viewing Shri Krishna in that form, to Balarama — the destroyer of enemies, having lotus eyes, spoke in the voice choked with delight.

О Maharaj, I had already thought that I should not go to Shri Krishna mounted over the chariot. Therefore you move with the chariot.” Thus speaking he got down from the chariot.

After descending from the chariot, “Lord Visnu taking to a deceitful form, had arrived in the city of Mathura. He had displayed his divine form in the ocean of monarchs. Therefore I would like to offer prayer to Kesava, in a universal form.”

Balarama elder brother of Shri Krishna spoke to the king of Mathura, “O Naresvara, it would not be proper for you to offer prayer to Shri Krishna, who is arriving here. Shri Krishna is already pleased with you even without your offering prayer to him, Then what have you to achieve by offering prayer to him. By your having an audience, with him, he is praised.

О king, Shri Krishna, after achieving the position of a Rajendra is arriving at your abode. Therefore, to praise him with divine stutis would not be proper for you.”

Thus talking, both of them reached close to Shri Krishna. Finding the king Ugrasena standing holding the arghya in his hand, Shri Krishna — the best among the orators, stopped his chariot and spoke to him.

О lord of Mathura, I had perfomed your abhiseka over the throne of Mathura, because you happen to be the lord of Mathura but you are spoiling the same yourself. This is not proper for you.

О king, I have myself offered you padya, arghya and water for sipping, therefore you need not offer me the same.11 Thus speaking he got down from the chariot.

О Naresvara, I am speaking well realising your inner intentions. You are the king of Mathura and shall always remain as such. It would not be proper to do it otherwise.

O Maharaja, I shall offer you a part of the riches which have been received by me, as has been done for the other rulers. Your share has been kept separately.

Leaving aside ornaments and costumes a lakh of gold coins, (dinars) stand for your share. Therefore you better mount over this golden chariots.

О great soul, О lord of kings, you kindly accept the flywhisks, the crown shining like the sun, the fans, chatras, the flags and the divine ornaments. Besides that, you kindly keep on ruling the city.

You be delightful with your sons and grand sons, rule the city of Mathura. You expand the Bhoja dynasty, destroying the enemies.

Indra, holding vajra has sent specially for Balarama born in the race of Sursena, who is god of gods and the form of the serpent Sesa and the eternal cause, a divine set of costumes and ornaments.

For all the residents of Mathura, ten thousand gold coins for each one of them have to be given. All the sUtas, Magadhas and the bards, will get a thousand dinara each. The old women who sing the welfare songs, and each one of the female dancers will get a hundred dlnaras each, Vikadru and other associates of the king Ugrasena, have been ear marked ten thousand dinaras for each one of them.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus reaching the camping place of the army of the people of Mathura, honouring Ugrasena, lord Madhusudana filled the entire city of Mathura with delight, while entering the same.

As the gods look graceful in the heaven, similarly lord Krishna, decorated all the people of Mathura with ornaments, costumes flowers garlands besides the sandal paste, who looked graceful.

The kettledrums, conches, big drums,- drums and other musical instruments were sounded. The sound of all these together with the sound of the trumpeting of the elephants, neighing of horses, the lion roars of the soldiers, besides the rumbling sound of the wheels of the chariots, tumultuous noise was carried, which resembled the thunder of the clouds in the sky.

The bards were singing the praise of the lord. The people of the city offered salutation at his feet. After performing enormous charities, Sr! Hari did not feel proud or surprised.

Firstly he had high intentions by nature and he had given much more charities than this occasion, and he was not at all proud or arrogant by nature. Therefore he was neither surprised nor proud.

The damsels of Mathura, looking at Shri Krishna, with his body respledent like the sun, offered their salutation to him at every step.

(At that point of time, the people of Mathura thus conversed among themselves) He is lord Ndrayana, living in the ocean of milk, who presently descarding the bed of the serpent Sesa, has arrived in the city of Mathura.

It is he, who, bound the king Bali, who was invincible from the gods, bestowed the kingship of the three worlds to Indra — the carrier of vajra.

This is Kesava — the killer of the demon Kesl, killing all the groups of demons, killed Kamsa who was the best of the valorous kings, and bestowed the kingship of Mathura to Bhojaraja Ugrasena. He neither crowned himself as the king, nor did he occupy the lion throne. Presently he has entered Mathura, after achieving the position of Rajendra.

Thus listening to the conversation of the people of Mathura, the bards, magadhas and the prominent people of the city spoke like this.

О ocean of virtue, how can we speak out the qualities, of your virtues, influence, enthusiasm, and your appearance, with a single tongue possessed by us?

О Deva, possibly, Nagaraja, the dweller of the nether world, having the body of serpents, might be able to sing your glory with two thousand tongues.

It has never been heard, that the lion throne of Indra, had ever arrived on earth for the use of the kings. Such an event had never happened in the past nor shall it happent in future. (But you have made this impossible to become possible).

The descending of the assembly hall from the heaven and the appearing of the divine pitchers in the sky, performing the abhiseka has neither been seen nor heard by anyone. Therefore we feel this event to be quite unique.

Graceful is Devaki — the best of the damsels who was fortunate enough to carry you in her womb. Presently she is in a position have a look at your beautiful lotus eyed face which is adored even by the gods, with her loveable eyes.

Listening to such talk, of the bards and others, both the brothers Shri Krishna and Balarama, making Ugrasena to lead them, reached the gate of the boundary wall. At that point of time, the valorous king Ugrasena, stood before the chariot of Krishna and said, “Bring padya, bring padya.” Thereafter, he adored him offering padya and arghya.

Thereafter, he adoring Shri Krishna, lowering his head, the valorous Ugrasena mounted over the chariot and as the clouds pour the rain, similarly he also started showing the rain of golden water.

With the showering of that rain, Shri Krishna reached the abode of his parents. Where Ugrasena, the monarch of Mathura, spoke to Shri Krishna.

“O lord, you have achieved the position of Rajendra, therefore it would be appropriate for you to establish the lion throne here in the palace.

О lord, actually you are the lord of Mathura. You have achieved the royal assembly of this place with the strength of your arms. I shall take you to that assembly and shall try to piease you with my conduct. You need not be annoyed with me.

О lord of the people, Devaki, Vasudeva and Rohini were confused with delight therefore they could do nothing at that time.

О king, then Padmavati — the mother of Kamsa worshipped lord Kesava and whatever riches had been usurped by Kamsa from various countries, were placed at the feet of Shri Krishna. At that point of time Shri Krishna called for Ugrasena and spoke to him in sweet voice.

Shri Krishna said — 0 Maharaja, I am not desirous of the kingdom of Mathura. I did not kill your son for the sake of riches. He has met with his end due to the move of the destiny.

О monarch, you perform several type of yajhas. Give enormous amount in charities and depending on the strength of my arms, be victorious over the enemy armies.

You better get rid of your mental agony. You get rid of the fear emerging out of the killing of Kamsa. Whatever riches have been given by me, you should carry them to your abode.”

Thus assuring the monarch Ugrasena, Shri Krishna, went to his parents accompanied with Haladhara.

Both the valorous warriors, humbly offered their salutation at the feet of their parents.

At that point of time it appeared as if Amarivatt — the capital of Indra, had arrived at Mathura.

Looking at the abode of Vasudeva, the people of Mathura thought in their minds, that it was not earth but was heaven.

At that point of time, the monarch of Mathura, was seen off with his wife by both the brothers, Balarama and Shri Krishna, then entered the house of their parents. Placing their weapons securely at suitable places, they started wandering in the house.

Thereafter performing their daily rountine, they were seated and talked comfortably. At the same time, a terrific disturbance was created.

The clouds started rotating in the sky. The mountains on the earth started shaking. The oceans were disturbed. Sesa - the best of the serpents was also upset. All the Yadavas fell down head on, while shaking.

Finding them, so fallen, both Shri Krishna and Balarama remained unmoved with the blowing of the terrific wind with the fluttering of the wings of Garuda, he realised, that Garuda the foremost of the birds was arriving.

In the mean time Shri Krishna saw that Garuda had arrived. He was wearing the divine garland of flowers and his body was plastured with the sandal paste. Garuda then bowed in reverence to both the brothers. Then he taking to a pleasent form, took his seat.

Finding the arrival of his excellent minister, Shri Krishna — the subgator of Bali then spoke to him, “O king of birds, you are welcome here. О Garuda — the delighter of the heart of Vinata, welcome to you.

Thereafter Shri Krishna spoke to Garuda his in second form, according to his own prowess.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thereafter the valorous Balarama, Shri Krishna and Garuda, entered into the chamber for secret consultations. They started confabulations there. Then Shri Krishna said, “O son of Garuda, Jarashandha has been mad invincible for us. (the same position made for Kalayavana.) But the strength of that enemy of yours is quite vast. He remains surrouded by a Vast army as well as the monarchs. His army is so vast that Kalayavana’s army as well as the army of Jarasandha, cannot be counted in a hundred years even. Therefore, I tell you that our stay in Mathura would not be beneficial for us. This is what I believe”.

Garuda said — О lord, you happen to be the god of gods. After offering my salutation to you, I had gone to inspect the land suitable for your living near Kusasthali.

О best of gods, reaching there, remaining in the sky, I inspected the place from all the sides, I have arrived at a conclusion, that beautiful city comprising of all the noble symptoms could be built there which could be well honoured.

Several regions of Kusasthall are close to the ocean and have enough of water there. The earth of that region is sloping from north and east. It is surrounded by the ocean from all the sides. Therefore if a city is built at that place, it would be beyond the approach of the gods or even the demons.

The city when built there, would be the mine of all types of gems. The trees of that place would yield the fruits of all the desired types. These trees would blossom in all the seasons with flowers adding granduer to the city. It shall be pleasent from all the sides.

People of all the asramas would reside there. The city shall have all the virtues. It would be inhabitated with thousands of men and women, providing them the delight.

The city shall have several moats, boundary walls, gopuras, and high buildings arranged in lines. Its roads and crossings would have astonishing grace.

The gates and shutters would be quite vast. It would have astonishing types of yantras fixed to it, besides the huge argalas. The gold boundary walls would add to its grace.

The city would have enough of elephants, horses, humans, chariots as well as armies. Commodities from various countries and directions would be found there in abundance. The trees with the divine flowers and fruits shall add to its grace.

The city shall be decorated with the lines of flags and banners and graced by the prensence of huge buildings which will increase the delight of friends and the awe for the enemies.

O lord, the city would be more beatiful than all the cities of the gods. Raivataka is the living place for the gods, should be made to adorn the new city. Its main gate should be made to look pleasent like the gem of Nandanavana. О lord of gods, you can stay there.

The maids could freely and pleasantly be able to roam about in that place. The city shall be known as Dvaraka or Dvaravati, which would be famous in the three worlds. The city would be quite pleasant like Amaravati — the capital of Indra.

In case the ocean releases a part of its submerged land, then the excellent city of Dvaraka could be constructed, there. Visvakarma could himself come and execute various types of architecture in building the city.

О lord, you get such types of palaces studded with gems, beads, coral, diamonds, lapic lazuli and other divine gems and diamonds, which should be divine and graceful like assemblies of the gods. There should be hudreds of pillars in the same. The palaces should be made with the brickes of gold. The divine palaces should have the divine flags and banners and should have the lustre of the sun and the moon. The gods and the Gandharvas should remain engaged in protecting them.”

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus expressing his feelings before Shri Krishna, Garuda — the sun of Vinita, offered his salutation folding both his hands to both the brothers. Thereafter he took his seat.

О king, both Balarama and Shri Krishna thought over the words spoken by Garuda, and expressing his feelings, Shri Krishna, honoured him, welcoming him at the same time. He presented to him a beautiful garland of gems and bade him farewell. Thereafter like the two gods of the heaven, they kept on living in Mathura delightfully.

Listening to the words of Garuda, the immensely glorious Ugrasena, the king of Bhojas, spoke to Shri Krishna the nectar like wards, filled with confidence.

О Krishna, О longarmed one, you enhance the delight of the Yaduvamsa. You listen to me attentively whatever is being spoken by me.

As the women without their husbands cannot remain with comfort anywhere, similarly, the people of Mathura can never live with comfort without you.

О excellent one, you shower grace on others, with you we feel protected. With the strength of your arms, what to speak of the kings we would not be afraid of the gods or even, Indra.

О best of the race of yadu, wherever you would go on victory march, you take all of us with you.”

Listening to the words of the king Ugrasena, lord Krishna — the son of Devaki smilingly said, “I shall act according to your wishes. There is no doubt about it.”
