Shri Krishna’s appeasing Satyabhama and his proceeding for performing of tapas

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, Lord Shri Krishna, who is eternal and omniscient, knowing that Narada was seated with Rukmini, left the place on some other pretext.

Leaving that place he anxiously went to the abode of Satyabhama, which had been built over the peak of Raivataka mountain by Visvakarma himself.

Satyabhama — the daughter of Satrajit was dearer to Shri Krishna, than his own life and was respectable as well. She was proud by nature. Realising this Shri Krishna, slowly went to her place.

Madhusudana thought in her mind, about the anger of Satyabhama, and feeling panicky entered her palace.

He asked the attendant accompanying him to wait at the gate and asking Pradyumna to welcome Narada properly, he entered the palace.

He found at a distance Satyabhama — his beloved, having been lodged in the chamber of anger. In anger, she was breathing heavily and lay there like a slave girl.

She held a lotus flower against her mouth which had been injured by her with her nails. She had deep sighs at intervals, and at times she laughed.

The fore parts of her feet were unstable and she drew lines with her feet on the ground. She turned her face backwards again and again.

Then she placed her face over the left hand, she got engrossed in thoughts. All her limbs were quite pleasent. The eyes lowered the grace of the lotus flowers. She was a beautiful damsel.

Getting the sandal paste from the hand of the slave girl, initially praised it, delighting the heart of the slave girl. Then suddenly she scolded her mercilessly.

Getting up from the bed again and again, she fell down. Shri Hari observed the several perfomances of his spouse.

When she placed her covered head over the pillow, Shri Krishna thought it to be the opportune time and went to her.

Reaching in the room, he hinted the slavegirls, not to disclose to Satyabhama, about his arrival. He also stopped the movements of slave girls. Then he advanced and stood behind Satyabhama.

Standing close to her holding a fan, he started moving it, smiling at the same time.

Carrying the fragrance of the Parijata flower, lord Shri Krishna issued such a pleasent scent, which was beyond the reach of the humans.

Smelling the astonishing type of fragrance, Satyabhama was surprised. She removed the cloth from her mouth, and spoke, “what is it?”

Then Satyabhama, wearing an auspicious smile on her face got up and without looking at Shri Krishna standing behind her, she asked the slavegirls. “Where from is this fragrance coming?”

When so asked by their mistress, they kept quite. They knelt on the ground and lowering their heads, they kept on kneeling with the is hands folded.

Unaware of the lord — -the source of fragrance, she thought that the fragrance was emerging out of the earth. She failed to understand as to how the earth could be so fragrant.

Then she uttered, “what is this?” Thus speaking Satyabhama looked around and she suddenly found Shri Krishna there.

Suddenly her eyes were flooded with tears and with her choked voice, she could only say, “It is proper for such a type of fragrance to emerge from your body. In spite of her being in love with the lord, still because of anger, she got somewhat bitter.

Her pleasant lips started fluttering. With a deep sigh, she lowered her face then the lady with jet black eyes possessing the noble symptoms, kept on sitting there, turning her face to other side for two ghadis (forty four minutes).

Then she placed her face over both her hands, curving her eyebrows, well looking towards Shri Hari, spoke, “you look so graceful”

Thus speaking, the stream of tears started flowing from her eyes as if the drops of snow were falling from the lotus leaves.

Then the lotus eyed Krishna became quite anxious and jumped over the bed and took the tears falling from the eyes of his beloved over his hands.

Lord Govinda, looking graceful with his lotus like eyes, embraced Satyabhama against his chest with tear falling from her eyes and spoke to her.

О damsel with the eyes resembling the lotus petals, how are the tears falling from your eyes, which resemble (the dew drops) falling from the lotus flowers.

О beloved one, your face resembles the grace of the rising sun in the morning, then why is it looking like the faded out lotus flower in the evening?

О damsel with beautiful thighs, why are you not clad in saffron coloured costumes. Why are you clad in the white garments?

Here are the costumes of saffron which are liked by you. After performing the worship of gods and sending off the gods, a lady should not be clad in white cloth.

О goddess with beautiful limbs, you tell me why are you not adorned with ornaments? О Satya with dusty grace, why is your face which is to be decorated with painting of leaves is filled with tears?

О good looking one, having vast eyes, beloved of my heart, why is your head covered with the white cloth today, besides the fragrant and attractive sandal paste?

О dear, what is the reason for the removal of the lustre of your face? or by so doing why are you causing pain to my heart?

The sandal paste, spreading over your face, is becoming enemy of the painting of leaves over the cheeks. It does not look graceful.

Your neck is deprived of ornaments where the grace of the winter season has not appeared. It does not look nice like the sky appearing without the stars and the constellations in the rainy season.

Your smiling face competes with the moon. It speaks a little and spreads the fragrance of the lotus flower, why donot you talk to me with your pleasent face?

If not full, you can have just a glance at me. Having deep sighs you are issuing the tears mixed with collyrium over your faded face.

О beautiful one, having the lustre of the blue lotus flower, it is no use crying like this. You better step it. This water of tears mixed with collyrium, is an enemy for the grace of your face. Do not shed it any further.

О goddess, when it is well known in the world, that I happen to be your sevant, then О damsel with beautiful complexion, why do not you ask me to do something as was done earlier by you.

O goddess, О beautiful one, what wrong have I done to you that you are troubling me so much?

O damsel with all the beautiful wings, I speak always truthfully to you, by my action thought and behaviour, I have never neglected you.

О graceful one, though all my wives are entitled to receive the due respect from me, but you have my special love and grace which is not found for anyone of my other wives.

О Satyabhama your beauty is comparable with apsaras the immense attraction and love, I have for you, cannot leave you even after my death, this is my firm belief. You must understand it quite well.

O my beloved, having the beauty of the centre or the perciarp of the lotus flower, as the earth has the quality of forgiveness and the sky has the echer sound, similarly my love for you is infallible.

As the fire has flame, the sun has the lustre, shine in the moon, always remain, similarly my love for you always remains.”

When Shri Krishna was speaking so lovingly, then the virtuous Satyabhama wiped out tears from her face and said.

O lord, I always had a firm belief in my mind that you belong to me but today I have well understood that you have an ordinary love for me from within.

I had never known earlier that everything of the earth is perishable and the time reverses all the things. But presently, I feel that all the movements of the earth are unstable.

O Acyata, till such time I remain alive on earth, you are my second soul on earth. Similarly I am also the your second beloved wife on earth. Believing this I considered my life and birth to be successful. But what is the use of talking much. I have known your heart very well.

I do realise that you only have the lip deep love for me. You display your love verbally only, besides being artificial. But at other place it is real and not artificial.

О Purusottama, I have a simple emperament and knowing it fully well, 'ou taking refuge of deceitfulness and neglect me.

This is enough. I have witnessed the unchangeable scene, which was to be seen by me and also heard about it. The way your love rises has also been seen by me.

О Purusottama, in case you have same love for me, then permit me to go and perform excellent tapas.

Because the vratas or the tapas performed by the ladies with the permission of their husbands, become successful, whatever be unsuccessful.”

Thus speaking, the beautiful damsel with auspicious symptoms, the chaste Satyabhama, holding the corner of the yellow garment of Shri Krishna started sobbing.

Here ends chapter — 66, of the Visnu Parva of the Harivaiiisa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic. lahabharata, relating to Shri Krishna appeasing Satyabhama and his proceeding for the performing of tapas. (Vrs. 1-55, P.T. - 6824)
