Narada highlights the glory of Shri Krishna but Indra still refuses to oblige and part with Parijata tree





Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, listening to the words of Indra, Narada the best of orators, spdke to Indra in seclusion.

О Devesvara, one should speaks to the rulers which should please them. There is no doubt sbout it, still when the situation so arises, even the unpleasent words which could be beneficial to them should be spoken and this would be appropriate.

The one who is aware of the best way of the world, and is well versed in the human polity, such a person should not come in the forefront. This is said by the people of wisdom.

When the problem of the duty and otherwise arises, you alway consult me. Therefore, I shall speak to you presently as well. You can make use of the same, in case my talk appeals you.

A person, who is not desirous of the defeat of the king, and situation which is of his benefit, is well known to him, such a well wisher, should speak out to the king the words which are quite judicious, well suited to the time and are beneficial.

It would be appropriate for the noble people that they should speak the words, which a beneficial though they may not be pleasent out wordly. This is the only way of getting relieved of the debt of love and affection. Such a method has been held in high esteem by the learned people, since long.

‘Those who are not truthful, who shatter the limits of dharma, who are not desirous of listening to the noble advice of others, who are jealous of others, no pleasant talk should be carried out with them, nor the one which is for their benefit.” Thus speaking the people of nobility have denounced them.

О omniscient god, I have to speak out something which is totally beneficial for you. You listen to me and act according to my welfare words.

О god, destroyer of Balasura, in case a controversy develops among the brothers or the relatives, it pleases the enemies. There is no doubt about it.

О lord of the gods and the best among the learned people, one should be aware of the task which bestows welfare, and one should be aware of what is just the reverse of it. The wise people should not start a task, which could cause repentence, after its starts. This is what the learned people say.

О Indra — the god of gods, I do not expect any good result of the conflict. You better listen to the cause of the same.

The one, who alone is the cause and the creator of the universe, the same Hari has appeared on earth as Shri Krishna. He is the one, who is visualised by the learned people as beyond Prakrti and the supreme soul or the creator.

The visible part of invisible Prakrti, he is Brahma. He the cause of the creation of all the living beings. He happens to be the supreme Shri Visnu the soul of all the living beings.

The glorious goddess Uma is the main part of Prakrti. Therefores he represents all, and the forms of the things of pleasure and is satisfied by consciousness alone.

Rukmini and other damsels are the prime form of Prakrti. The imperishable Prakrti has the form of Umadevi, having the form of gunas, while Mahesvara, is the god.

О best of gods, (in this way, Laksmi or Rukmini, represent the eternal Prakrti, and Visnu or Krishna is the virtuous Purusa. There is hardly any difference between Rudra and Visnu. The universe possessing the three gunas viz:- sattva, rajas and tamas is primarily ruled by imperishable supreme soul known as the illustrious Narayana. He is the creator of the entire universe.

О Devesvara, Narayana, the supreme lord, created Mahesvara the consumer, Visnu the creator, besides Brahma and other groups of gods besides the Prajapatis.

Thus Visnu — the Purana — Purusa is unthinkable for the gods, beyond measure and beyond the gunas.

In earlier times, Aditi — the mother of gods adored Visnu by means of tapas. Getting pleased with her tapas, lord Visnu asked her to seek for a desired boon.

О excellent god, at that point of time recognising lord Narayana, offered her salutation to him and said, “O lord, I want a son like you.”

Then lord Visnu said, “O goddess, there is none comparable with me in the three worlds. Therefore, I shall be born as your son from my amsa.”

О sinless (according to that decision). Lord Narayana, the creator of all incarnated on earth in the form of your brother, and was known as Upendra.

О Deva, Shri Hari, who is source of the creation of the past, present and future, besides the destruction, takes birth, of his own will in various forms.

He is the protector of the universe, creator, and the destroyer and is known as Kesava. He has been born for the benefit of the mankind, in Mathura.

О Devendra - you honour others. As the flesh has the fat in it, similarly, in the entire universe lord Visnu is present in every particle of the same.

The lord is well disposed towards the Brahmanas, is the soul of all and he conducts himself in the world in the form in which he appears on earth. Accordingly he seems to earns the blemishes or otherwise, besides the pleasure and the pain. In reality lord Visnu is above the gunas and dweller of Vaikuntha.

Therefore, lord Padmanabha — the creator of the living beings, omniscient, Shri Krishna, is adorable by all the gods.

He also appeared as the serpent Sesa to carry the earth own his head. He is immensely glorious. He is called yajhas by the Vedas, the noble people, daily.

The omniscient lord appears in white complexion in Satyayuga, red in Tretayuga, yellow in Dvapara and black in the age of Kali.

Then Shri Hari, taking to a divine form, killed Hiranyaksa — the demon. For the benefit of the world, rescued the earth submerged in wate* taking to the form of Varaha (the boar) and established the same over the surface of the water.

Shri Hari, then taking to the form of man — lion, Narasirhha, killed Hiranyakasipu. Then taking to the form of Vamana (dwarf) lord Visnu, won the goddess, earth and imprisoned the Daitya king Bali in his serpent-noose.

Though with the making of efforts, both by the gods and the demons. RajaLaksmi was meant for both of them, but still, in earlier times the immensely benevolent and valorous one having the form without mea­sure or endless, still taking to a Virat form terrified all the three lokas entrusted the care of Laksmi of the three worlds to you.

A person whose tapas still remains, and he conducts deceitfully in unjustified way, lord Krishna surely kills him, because Shri Krishna has taken a Vrata to destroy the wicked people.

For the noble people who are engaged in the protection of dharma, in order to please you, has also killed the prominent Danavas, besides the enemies of the gods.

The intelligent lord taking to the form of Sr! Rama, had killed Ravana and incarnating in other forms, killed several valorous asuras as a lion destroys an elephant.

The Jagadisvara who is the best of all the living beings, and also known as Upendra, presently also for the benefit of the world, lives on earth in human form.

As the fire flame dwells in the straw and it get spreads, similarly, the lord, in earlier times I had witnessed Shri Hari among the groups of demons, wearing matted locked of hair, the skin of black buck, carrying a dandas of Plasa as a Vamana.

When the entire world had been submerged in water, at that point of time as well, I had found him freeing the earth of the Danavas.

О best of gods, I do not tell a lie, Shri Krishna would surely carry the Parijata tree to Dvaraka.

О Vasava, you having been overpowered with the brotherly love, you will never attack Shri Krishna who will also never attack you taking you to be the elder brother.

In case you do not accept the words spoken by me, then you better consult your countiees who are well-versed in polity and dharma and are desirous of your welfare.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, at the words thus spoken by Narada he gave a reply to him, who is the preceptor of the god.

О Brahmanas, you are praising Shri Krishna to be so powerful, and you are correct as well. I have listened to discussion about his prowess earlier as well.

When Shri Krishna is so great, then keeping in view the conduct of the noble people, even then I shall not give him the Parijata tree even when I am competent do so.

О sage, you may meet with welfare. The immensely influential people, would never be angry with me, for such a petty thing. Thus thinking I am quite fearless of Shri Krishna, who possesses all the virtues.

The immensely influenced people are always tolerable and listen to the old people possessing the wisdom.

Shri Krishna — the foremost of the religious minded people shall never come in conflict with his elder brother.

Shri Krishna — the form of Visnu, has given a boon to my mother, similarly she will have to tolerate the sin of his elder brother.

At my own will, lord Visnu was born as Upendra, similarly, he will have to respect his elder brother.

In earlier times, at the time of the incarnation of Vamana, did the lord Visnu not accept my seniority, in case Madhusudana so desires, he can himself become my elder.

Then Narada, possessing the patience as well as the wisdom, finding Indra, infallible from the decision, (he had already taken), he took leave of Indra and proceeded on to the city of Kusasthali — Dvaraka.

Here ends chapter — 71, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana — the khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to Narada’s highlighting the glory of Shri Krishna, but Indra still refuses to give Parijata to Shri Krishna. (Vrs. 1-54, P.T. = 7113)
