The prayer offered by lord Siva to Visnu





Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, then the lord carrying the bull banner in hand, carrier of the trident, the lord of Uma, lord Rudra, holding the hand of Shri Krishna in his hand, under the full view of the gods and the sage with the purified heart spoke to Kesava — having Garuda over his banner.

He said, "O Devesvara, 0 holder of cakra, О Janardana, what is all this being spoken by you. What for are you performing the tapes? 0 lord, what do you desire?

О Hari, you yourself are the eternal lord Visnu. You are the meditation of all the tapasvis. О Deva, Janardana, lord of the universe, in case you are performing tapas for getting a son, then I have already granted you a son. О Benevolent lord Narayana, you better listen the reason behind it.

О Hari, in the ancient time, during the time of Krtayuga, when I was engaged in performing tapas for ten thousand year for some purpose.

О Deva, О Devesvara, at that point of time, Uma, my wife used to serve me with the permission of her father.

О Deva, with the tapas performed by me then, Indra became nervous. Therefore he deputed Kamadeva to me. Then the god of love, with the help of his friend the spring season, arrived before me.

Reaching thus the god of love, made me the target of his flowery arrows. Parvati used to serve me collecting the flowers.

О Devesvara, observing that Kamadeva was shooting his arrows over me, I felt enraged. Then in anger, the fire flames emerged out of the third eye of my forehead.

О all pervading Hari, the fire that emerged out of my forehead reduced the god of love into ashes. At that stage could realise, that the mischeif had been created by Indra himself.

О Devesvara, since that time I feel compassionate for the god of love. I am mentally pleased with him. Even Brahma inspired me, that I should provide Kamadeva an opportunity to have a rebirth.

О Deva, О lord of the universe, I have therefore deputed Kamadeva to be your son. О lord, he would be your eldest son and known by the name of Pradyumna. О Devesvara, you kindly, consider him to be the god of love. There is nothing to be thought otherwise in this case".

Thus speaking, lord Siva the foremost of the noble people, folding his hands with Uma, and in presence of the great sages who were desirous of knowing the true form of Shri Krishna spoke, in order to establish the truth about Shri Krishna.

О Best of the Kuru race, with the folding of the hand of lord Mahadeva, before Shri Krishna, all other sages, the gods, Gandharvas, Siddhas and Kinnaras, also folded their hands, before the all pervading lord Hari.

Mahesvara said — The cause of the Prakrti tattva by the learned people of the Samkhya philosophy, the Mahat-tattva emerged out of it. The cause of its origin is the Prakrti.

О all pervading Janardana, the Prakrti which is the foremost, serves as the place of origin of the universe. It has three divisions, viz sattva, rajas and tamas, the cosmos emerged out of the Prakrti with three gunas. The Samdhya-prakrti, which is the cause of it is considered to be your figure by the people of learning. Visnu, appearing in the same form, you become its supreme lord.

From the terrific Mahattva emerged the ahamkara (arrogance). О Jagannatha, the Mahatattva that emerged in the primordial stage, the same Mahatattva is represented by you.

The great cause known as tanamatra emerged out of you. The Panca-mahabhUtas emerged from the same.

О lord of the universe, the five mahabhiitas of the world are also known as your form of Sarvesvara and are known as the earth, wind, sky, water and fire which is the fifth one.

О Deva, the eyes, the nose, the skin, the tongue, and the ears, are the five organs of knowledge. Sixth is the mind attached to them, who inspires a person to know about the different matters of the sense organs.

О Janardana, besides the speech, there are five more sense organs. О Jagannatha, О Hari, you are the supreme soul, who controls the mind. It is you alone to keep the sense organs busy in different topics. О Devesvara, you establish the path for the sense organs.

When you were associated with rajoguna, then all the living beings were created by you. Then getting associated with sattvaguna, you feed all the three worlds. In association with tamoguna, you resort to the destruction of the universe.

Thus you being the self controlled Parmesvara, associated with all the three gunas, possessing the three types of prowess, resort to the task of creation, protection and destruction.

О Madhava, О preceptor of the universe, you, dwelling in the hearts of the living beings, you creat the worldly pleasures for the use of the sense organs. Therefore you are pervading in all the bhUtas as the worldly pleasures.

О lord, at the time of creation, you serve as Brahma, during the time maintenence you serve as Visnu, while during the time of destruction, you serve as Rudra. О lord, thus you have three abodes.

О Hari, О Deva, the earth, water, fire, wind, the sky, mind, intelligence and arrogance (ahmkara), are the differently known eight Prakrtis, which belong to you.

You are virata-Purusa (universal lord), having thousands of eyes, and thousands of feet besides the arms. All your objects are thousands in number. You have thousands of forms. You are also Indra, as the lord of the heaven.

You, pervading the entier earth with seven islands, exercising yourself as gross as well as the subtle, you have the length extending by ten fingers from the cosmos, raising yourself above.

Whatever has happened and whatever shall happen, the entire world belongs to you. 0 Janardana you are the virat form and Samrat has emerged from you.

O soul of the Puranas, 0 Jagannatha, Brahmana — the performer of sacrifice, the protector of the world was born from your mouth.

O Visnu, from your arms, Ksatriyas — the protectors emerged, the Vaisyas emerged from both your thigh, and Siidras emerged out of both your feet, it is said.

О Jagadisvara, О Janardana, thus all the four varnas actually emerged out of your body. 0 Devesvara, the moon, which provides comforts to all the living beings, which is quite resplendent emerged out of your mind.

The sun which illumines the universe from its rays emerged out of your eyes; Indra, the fire and the wind god appeared from your prana-vayu.

O Deva, 0 Janardana, the sky appeared out of your navel. О lord of the cows, from your forehead, the vast dyuloka emerged.

O lord of the universe, the earth emerged out of your feet and directions from the years, emerged. Thus creating the entire universe, you pervade everywhere in the same.

O Kesava pervading in all the three worlds, you remain present everywhere. Because of your having been the associated with mineral, you are known as Visnu.

O lord Visnu, the lord of past, present and future, water is known as nara. You sleep in that water from the time immorial, earning the name of Narayana.

O lord you remove the sufferings and sins of the people, which earns you the name of Hari. 0 lord, you always bestow welfare on all, which earns you the name of Samkara.

Because of your gigantic and ever increasing nature, you are known as Brahman. Since you control the sense organs as Madhu, therefore, you are known as Madhu-Sudana.

О Kesava, О Visnu, Hrslka is the name of the sense organs, since you happen to be the lord of sense organs, you are known as Hrslkesa among the gods.

Ka is the name of Brahma and I happen to be the lord of all the living beings. Both of us emerged out of your body. Because of this, you are known as Kesava.

О Hari, та stands for knowledge and you are the lord of the same. Therefore you are also known as Madhava. The word dhava stands for the master.

The speech is know as cow also and you are well aware of the same, which earns you the name of Govinda.

The excellent sages conceive the three Vedas as tri. All of them pervade in you. Therefore you are known as Trivikrama.

Because of your subtle nature, you are known as dwarf or Vamana. This is the cause of you being known as Vamana. You are known as Muni, since the sages adore you and since you observe the rules, you are known as Yati.

Since you perform tapas you are known as a tapasvi or an ascetic. Since you serve as abode of all the bhiitas, therefore you are known as bhutavasa.

О Hari, you are adorable by all the living beings therefore, you are called as Isvara. О lord, you are Pranava of all the Vedas and Gayatrls of all the metres.

You the akara of all the syllabless and are sphota of the consomant. You are Siva among the Rudras and are Pdvaka among the Vasus.

You are asvatha among the trees, you are Brahma — the preceptor of all the lokas; you are Meru among the mountains and Narada among the divine sages.

You are Prahlada among the Daityas and are Vasuki among the serpents.

You are Kubera of all the Guhyakas, Varuna among the aquatic animals, besides being Ganga, which moves in three streams.

You are the beginnig, middle and end of all the bhUtas. The universe has emerged out of you and it ultimately is absorbed in you.

О Janardana, О Deva, you are all pervading lord, and I am also as you are О lord of the universe, there is absolutely no difference between you and me, in words and the meanings.

О Govinda, all the great names in the world, they represent me as well. No one should think otherwise in this regard.

О Jagannatha, О lord of cows, your adoration is my adoration as well. О Devesvara, the one who is jealous of you, he is surely jealous of me, there is no doubt about it.

О Deva, I represent your greatness and because of the same, I am also believed to be the lord of the universe. О Deva, О Hari, there is nothing in the world in which you cannot be found.

O lord of the universe, О Devesvara, whatever had been there in the past, and whatever has to happen in future, represents you alone. There is nothing without you.

О lord, all the gods, praise your qualities, eulogising you at the same time. О lord you always represent RK, Yajuh and Sanaveda.

О lord, what more can I say, you are all in all. О Deva, О Visnu, О Madhava, О Kesava, salutation to you all.

О universal soul, salutation to you. You are Padmanabha, salutation to you. О Isvara, I bow in reverence to you.
