Wrongly Labelled Clothes Withdrawn

“Marks and Spencer”, the UK stores group, yesterday announced it had withdrawn a small batch of clothing, after it was discovered that the products had been incorrectly labeled as made in the UK, when they had been made in Morocco.

The move comes three days before the broadcast in Britain of a two-part television programme which alleged that some of M&S’s suppliers were exploiting child labor in developing countries and incorrectly labeling the products as made in the UK.

Mr. Denis Desmond, the chairman of the exclusive supplier to “Marks and Spencer”, yesterday categorically denied allegations the this Moroccan subcontractor was using child labor.

However, “Marks and Spencer” confirmed that part of a batch of 16,800 pairs of women’s pyjamas had been incorrectly labeled as made in the UK, when in fact they had subcontracted the work to a Moroccan company called Sicome.

In 1776, new technologies were being invented and applied to the manufacture of cotton and wool, iron, transportation and agriculture in what came to be called the “Industrial Revolution”.

Adam Smith was keenly interested in these events. He wanted to understand the sources of economic wealth, and he brought his acute powers of observation and abstraction to bear this question.

Smith identified the division of labour as a source of “the greatest improvement in the productive powers of labour”. The division of labour became even more productive when applied to creating new technologies.

Scientists and engineers, trained in extremely narrow fields, became specialists at inventing. Their powerful skills speeded the operations faster, and more accurately than people.

But, said Smith, the fruits of the division of labour are limited by the extent of the market. To make the market as large as possible, there must be no impediments to free trade both within a country and among countries.

Smith argued that when each person makes the best possible economic choice based on self-interest, that choice leads as if by an invisible hand to the best outcome for society as a whole.

Bell Canada, the country’s biggest telephone company, expects to post a 40 per cent jump in net income this year.

The expected increase, the first in three years, comes in the face of intense competition in long-distance services, and the entry of cable-TV operators and other competitors in the local market.

About 35 per cent of the improvement will come from an increase in local rates, which came into effect at the beginning of this year.

But much of the rest will be attributable to cost-cutting and higher revenues from phone services, such as a “call waiting” signal and access to incoming callers; phone numbers.

Operating expenses are expected to drop slightly this year, despite a 6.8 per cent advance in revenues. Bell’s workforce is due to shrink to 45,300 at the end of this year.

Bell said yesterday it was gaining more long-distance customers than it was losing. However, most of these were, small residential users, so that its market share in revenue terms was slipping.
