Вступление

Цель пособия – развитие навыков всех видов чтения, умений словообразования, повторение конструкций грамматики на материале аутентичных текстов общей направленности, которые расширяют кругозор и помогают ознакомиться с жизнью за рубежом, что позволяет повысить мотивацию к изучению иностранного языка. К текстам прилагаются задания, способствующие совершенствованию знаний в грамматике, лексике и разговорной практике, а также реализовать свои творческие способности. Все упражнения могут быть использованы в лингафонном классе как для обучения, так и для контроля. Определенный формат заданий позволяет готовить студентов к Интернет-тестированию. Для самоконтроля студент может найти ответы к заданиям в конце учебника и воспользоваться справочным материалом.

1 Toronto is the largest city in Canada. A relatively modern city, Toronto's history dates back to the late-18th century, when its land was first purchased by the British monarchy. With over 2.6 million residents, it is the fifth most populous city in North America. It is Canada's commercial capital and one of the top financial centres in the world. Toronto's leading economic sectors include finance, business services, telecommunications, aerospace, transportation, media, arts, film, music, television production, publishing, software production, medical research, education, tourism, engineering, and sports industries.

2 Toronto covers an area of 630 square kilometres. Toronto buildings vary in design and age with many structures dating back to the mid-19th century, while other prominent buildings were just newly built in the first decade of the 21st century.Toronto is a city of high-rises, having 1,800 buildings over 30 metres, second only to New York City (which has over 5,000 such buildings) in North America. Most of these buildings are residential.

3 The Old City of Toronto is the historic core of Toronto and remains the most densely populated part of the city. The Financial District contains the largest cluster of skyscrapers in Canada.The low crime rate in Toronto has resulted in the city having a reputation as one of the safest major cities in North America.(1167)

Еducation

Dublin is the primary centre of education in Ireland, with three universities and many other higher education institutions. There are 20 third-level institutes in the city. Dublin will be European Capital of Science in 2012. The University of Dublin is the oldest university in Ireland.

Culture

There are several theatres within the city centre, and various world famous actors have emerged from the Dublin theatrical scene. Apart from being the focus of the country's literature and theatre, Dublin is also the focal point for much of Irish Art and the Irish artistic scene. Dublin has long been a city with a strong underground arts scene.

Entertainment

Dublin has a vibrant nightlife and is reputedly one of Europe's most youthful cities, with an estimate of 50% of citizens being younger than 25. There are having the most popular nightclubs and pubs. New York City

New York is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York Metropolitan Area, one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. New York exerts a significant impact upon global commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural capital of the world. Located on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which comprises a state county. The five boroughs — The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island — were consolidated into a single city in 1898.

Boroughs

Manhattan is the most densely populated borough and is home to Central Park and most of the city's skyscrapers. The borough is the financial center of the city and contains the headquarters of many major corporations, the UN, a number of important universities, and many cultural attractions.

Brooklyn is the city's most populous borough. Brooklyn is known for its cultural, social and ethnic diversity, an independent art scene, distinct neighborhoods and a distinctive architectural heritage.

Queens is geographically the largest borough and the most ethnically diverse county in the United States.

Cuisine

New York City's food culture includes a variety of world cuisines influenced by the city's immigrant history. Eastern European and Italian immigrants have made the city famous for bagels, cheesecake, and New York-style pizza, while Chinese restaurants are ubiquitous.(2028знаков)
