The Institute of Biology and Chemistry ⇐ ПредыдущаяСтр 4 из 4 The Institute of Biology and Chemistry, located now in a picturesque green area in the Northeast of Moscow, was established in 2015, integrating two Departments: that of Biology and Chemistry and of Chemistry. The first one has its origin in Department of Physics and Mathematics launched in 1900, while the latter was joined to MSPI in 1960 as a part of Potemkin Pedagogical University (see the text “The History…”). The Institute provides education at three levels, offering a wide range of Bachelor`s Degree (4-5 years), Master`s Degree (2-2,5 years) and PhD (usually 3-4 years) programmes. At every level, a student can choose either a pedagogical programme, usually to take up a teaching career in future, or a purely scientific programme to become a researcher. Most pedagogical bachelor programmes are two-profile (i.e. Biology and English, Biology and Chemistry), enabling students to have a better choice of career paths. Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, 3. Botany, 4. Zoology and Ecology, 5. General Chemistry; 6. Organic Chemistry; 7. Science education and communicative technologies; 8. Medicine and Life Security The Institute boasts long-lasting fundamental science schools such as: 1. “______________ metabolism of insects and its regulation”. It was founded in 1972 by Professor Yu.B. Philippovich and quickly became nationally and internationally successful due to its important fundamental research. Now the school is led by professor N.M. Kutuzova; 2. “______________ of regulation and coordination of organism`s functions”. Founded in 1936 by Professor A.N. Kabanov, it is now led by professors V.B. Lyubovtsev, L.M. Mamalyga, I.V. Anchikova and I.E. Rabichev. It focuses on a variety of physiological problems, including physiology of children of different age groups; 3. “Biomorphology of plants” and “Population biology of plants”. Both schools were founded in the middle of the 20th century by distinguished Russian botanists I.G. Serebryakov and A.A. Uranov respectively, and are known for a number of breakthrough researches of international significance; 4. “Ecology of _______________ vertebrates” (led by professors I.A. Zhigarev and V.M. Galushin). The school was founded by outstanding zoologists, professors S.P. Naumov and A.V. Miheev, and has been focusing on studying small mammals and different groups of birds. The work of this school is very intense and embraces a great variety of ecological, ethological and taxonomical problems and has recognition both in Russia and abroad. 5. “Systematics and synecology of soil ______________” (led by professors N.A. Kuznetsova, K.V. Makarov and M.B. Potapov) was founded by a great Russian biologist professor M.S. Gilyarov and for a long time headed by his pupils professors I.Ch. Sharova and N.M. Chernova. The school carries out researches of such groups of soil animals as Collembola (______________) and Carabidae (_____________). The studies on Collembola conducted by MSPU collembologists are unique and well-known all over the world. 6. Professor E.Ye.Nifantyev’s School of chemists, formed in 1960s, is also a unique and worldwide famous scientific group, known for its leading works with phosphor-organic compounds and organic synthesis. Every school actively involves students in research work during laboratory practicums and field practice, through course works and final theses, encouraging students’ participation in conferences and competitions of different levels. Ultimately, this intense and never-ending work with students helps to recruit gifted young enthusiasts of research and thus keeps the science going and thriving notwithstanding the storms of social life. The Institute of Biology and Chemistry provides not only challenging and inspiring education and scientific study, but also exciting extracurricular activities: events initiated by the Student Council, the Photography club, the Theatre Studio, many sport sections. The vibrant student community of the Institute of Biology and Chemistry is friendly and united, largely owing to field practice, one of students’ most favorite parts in their course. Students participate in summer field training in botany, zoology, genetics, agriculture, ecology etc., most often living for about two-three weeks at the MSPU Biostation on the Istra River in the village of PavlovskayaSloboda, but at times going to other regions of Russia. There they collect herbarium, study the flora and fauna of the area, carry out a number of experiments. Studying and living together in the field for some weeks every year brings students together more than anything else. There are two scientific collections of international significance in the institute of Biology and Chemistry: Collection of Zoology and Ecology named after Professor A.F. Kots and Botanical collection “Herbarium” named after Professor A.G. Elenevsky (a famous botanist and the Head of the Botany Chair between 1987 and 2007). Zoologycollection has more than 1000 items.MSPU Herbarium, ______________ its history to the 1890s, is of great interest for botanists all over the world. With more than 110 thousand items (herbarium sheets), it is the third biggest herbarium in Moscow (after the Herbarium of Moscow State University and the Herbarium of the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Science), including 70% of Russian flora. On the list of world Herbariums its international index is MOSP. The Herbarium is being replenished permanently as a result of active ____________ researches. Annually, the results of expeditions’ funds increase by more than 100 sheets. The Herbarium is available for visitors as a part of excursions, organized for schoolchildren, students and young researchers. v Task 2.3. Decide if the statements below are true or false: 1.
