ВАРИАНТ 1

 

1. Перепишите и переведите следующие предложения. Найдите все слова, имеющие окончание “s”, определите, какую функцию это окончание выполняет (см. образец 1), т. е. является ли оно:

а) показателем 3-го лица единственного числа глагола в Present Indefinite;

б) показателем множественного числа имени существительного;

в) показателем притяжательного падежа имени существительного.

 

1. Great Britain consists of three parts: England, Scotland and Wales. 2. Britain lies in the eastern part of the warm Atlantic. 3. Our professor writes an article about this country's economic life. 4. There are many mountain chains in North-West England.

 

Перепишите следующие предложения и переведите их, обращая внимание на особенности перевода на русский язык определений, выраженных именем существительным.

Great Britain

 

l. Great Britain lies on the Atlantic coast of Western Europe, separated from France by only 34 km (21 miles) of water. It is made up of three countries: England, Scotland and Wales. Great Britain with Northern Ireland forms the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Irish Sea separates Great Britain from Ireland. Southern Ireland is independent of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

2. Great Britain is one of the most densely populated countries in the world; the average density is over 200 people per 1 square kilometer. Eighty percent of population live in towns. The total population of the country is some 60 million people. The capital of Great Britain is London.

3. The Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Irish Sea wash the coun­try. The position of Great Britain gives it a temperate climate. A warm ocean current, the Gulf Stream, washes Britain’s western shores. This water heats up and cools down very slowly. Britain therefore enjoys warmer winters and cooler summer than other countries at the same latitude. The west of the island has a higher rainfall and slightly milder climate than the east.

4. The United Kingdom is a highly-developed industrial country. The main branches of industry are machine-building, ship-building, coal-mining, light engineering and textile industry. Great Britain is known as one of the largest producers and exporters of machinery, electronics, textile, aircraft and navigation equipment. The main industrial centers are Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester and others. The important ports of the country are London, Liverpool and Glasgow.

5. Agriculture is one of the most important industries. The British Isles are famous for their cattle and sheep. Dairying is the most common in the west of England. The production of meat, dairy products and wool is very important in Great Britain. The greater part of the country is flat, so the farmers can grow vegetables, fruits and corn. The chief crops are oats, potatoes, flax and bar­ley.

1. The England’s coastline is very broken and that is why there are very many bays and harbors there. 2. English belongs to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European family of the languages. 3. There are many places of interest in London; one of them is Tra­falgar Square with Nelson’s monument. 4. The sea enters deeply into the land and has a great influence on the country’s climate.

 

England

 

1. England occupies the largest part of the island of the Great Britain. It has an area of more than 50 thousand square miles and population of some 46 million people. Together with Wales it forms the southern portion of the island of Great Britain. England’s boundaries on the North is Scotland, on the East is the North Sea, on the South are the Straits of Dover and the English Channel and on the west are the Atlantic Ocean, Wales and the Irish Sea.

2. In the North of England the Apennines run from the Scottish border to Derbyshire. The coastline has some bays and excellent natural harbours. The most famous ports of England include London, Bristol, Portsmouth and some others. The greater part of the land is flat. The most important rivers are the Thames, the Severn and the Trent.

3. England is densely populated part of the United Kingdom. A county is the chief regional administrative unit of England. This part of the United Kingdom has 46 counties. The capital of England is London.

4. England is a highly developed industrial country. London is the biggest industrial city. The most important branches of industry are instru­ment engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, as well as food, clothing and fur­niture processing. London is also the center of commerce. It is financial and business center of the country.

5. Birmingham is the country’s second largest city. During the industrial revolution, the city and the surrounding area of the west midland, known as the Black Country, developed into the country’s major engineering center. Factories of Birmingham still convert iron and steel into a vast variety of goods. On the western side, the Manchester area became, in 19th century, the world’s leading producer of cotton goods. Sheffield became a center for the production of steel goods. Further north, around Newcastle, shipbuilding is the major industry.

1. Scotland accounts for half of Britain’s forest area. 2. In the North of Scotland there is a lake which contains one of the biggest mysteries of the 20th century. 3. In the south of England snow falls very seldom and never lies too long. 4. Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, lies on seven hills and goes down those hills to the sea.

Scotland

 

1. Scotland is a country in the north of Great Britain. Besides the mainland, Scotland includes some islands: the Hebrides, Orkneys and Shetlands. The mainland has the boundary on the south with England; the Atlantic Ocean washes it on the west and north, on the east it is washed by the North Sea.

2. There are many mountain chains in Scotland. The highest mountains are Grampians, which include Ben Nevis. The chief river systems are those of the Forth and Clyde. Scotland is famous for its beautiful lakes among them are Loch Ness and Loch Lomond. The population is some 5 million people. The national emblem of Scotland is the this­tle.

3. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the city of science and it is associated with science, law and administration. This reputation, together with many historic buildings has led to its being called “The Athens of the North”. The annual festival of the arts is internationally famous. Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities not only in Great Brit­ain but also in Europe. It lies on seven hills and goes down those hills to the sea. Edinburgh is one of the largest industrial and cultural centers of Scotland. Many great men lived and worked there. Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet, published his first book of poems in Edin­burgh. Walter Scott, the farther of historical novel in world literature, was born in Edinburgh.

4. Some three-fourths of Scotland’s population live in the Central Lowlands. The traditional Scottish industries are coal-mining, steel manufacture and ship-building. After the discovery in the 1970s of oil and gas under the North Sea new industries began to develop. They are electronic engineering, chemicals, the food and drank industries and light engineering. Glasgow is the third largest city in Britain. It is associated with heavy industry and some of the worst housing conditions in Britain.

5. Scotland has one-third of Britain’s total agriculture area but 70 per cent of it consists of hill grazing for cattle and sheep. Only some 10 per cent of the agricultural land they use for crops and 70 per cent of it is under barley. Scotland accounts for half of Britain’s forest area, and fish­ing remains an important activities.

1. Wales’s steel industry supplies almost all Britain’s out­put of sheet steel. 2. New firms, which appeared in Wales, include most Japanese and American concerns. 3. A lot of coal-mines is located in the valleys near Cardiff. 4. Mountains, forests, rivers and a lot of farms you can find in the middle of Wales.

 

Wales

 

1. Wales lies in the west of the English Lowlands. It is one of the parts of Great Britain. Wales has territory of 20.760 square kilometers. The population of Wales is some 2.7 million people. It is a mountainous country with rocky outcrops dissected by deep valleys. The vegetation of Wales reflects the mountainous nature of the country and its moist climate.

2. Wales and England is one single political and administrative unit. The son and heir of the monarch is given the title "Prince of Wales" but his title has no political significance. The capital of Wales is Car­diff, the national language are English and Welsh. Wales has 8 counties. The national and cultural identity of Welsh people is grounded in their history, literature, the Welsh language and national festivals.

3. The Welsh are famous for their singing. A lot of Welsh people play musical instruments too. Wales has a very strong folk culture and many people still learn Welsh as their first language. Tourism in Wales with its coast resorts is widely popular.

4. Cardiff, the capital of Wales, is a very beautiful city. It lies near the mouth of the river Taff, which flows into the British Channel. Ca­thay’s Park, the center of the civic life of the city, is a splendid place. There are numerous offices, a government building and several colleges of the University of Wales in the centre of Cardiff. Engi­neering in Cardiff includes ship-repairing and the making of railway wagons, oil engines and vehicles. Cardiff is also known for a great range of light industry.

5. Coal-mining is a traditional basic industry, which produces 9 per cent of Britain’s coal. Agriculture occupies about 72 per cent of the land area. The main activities are sheep and cattle rearing in the lowlands. Today Wales’s agriculture (including horticultural products such as apples, berries, flowers and vegetables) is an important industry. It is highly productive and efficient. Wales accounts for some 11.9 per cent of forest area in Britain and exports about one-third of its water supplies to England.

Northern Ireland

1. Northern Ireland is situated in the North-East of the Ireland and occupies 14.121 square kilometers. It is only one-sixth part of the whole Island. Northern Ireland is called Ulster. New Ulster comprises 26 counties – local government districts. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The population is some 1.5 million people. Two-third of the population are Protestants, the rest – Catholics.

2. Education in Northern Ireland is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 15. The educational system is essentially similar to that of England. In the early 1990s Northern Ireland had nearly 1100 primary schools, annually attended by approximately 191,000 pupils and staffed by more than 8200 teachers. Secondary and special schools numbered about 275 and were attended by about 147,000 students taught by 10,300 instructors. The country has two universities: Queen's University of Belfast (1845) and the University of Ulster (1984).

3. Three basic industries – agriculture, textiles and ship- building – form the economy of Northern Ireland. Agriculture (predominantly livestock and meat products) is still the single most important branch of economy. Other industrial activities include the manufacture of aircraft, textile machinery and a wide range of engineering products, tobacco and clothing.

4. Northern Ireland was an important center for textiles though this branch of industry is in decline. Most of Northern Ireland’s trade is with or through Great Britain and that accounts for the concentration of the population and industry on the eastern seaboard close to Great Britain.

5. Belfast, the capital of Northern Ire­land, is the leading industrial center of the region. The prominent role of Belfast is due to its advantageous geo­graphic situation vis-a-vis (относительно) Britain. As a result Belfast became one of the largest ports of Great Britain.
