Benediction, conversation between Saunaka-Ugravasrava, Janamejaya’s request to listen to the story of the people of Vrsni dynasty, besides the details about creation





Offering solutation to Narayana and Nara, the best of humans, besides Sarasvatl, one should recite the Mahabharatra (or other Puranas).

Sauti said, the unparalleled words spoken by the sage Vyasa, which are sacred, auspicious, remover of sins, and bestower of welfare, when listened from the mouths of other’s, he does not need to have a bath in the holy place of Puskara, (because Mahabharata’s recitation is more sacred than that).

Victory to Vyasa-the son of the sage Parasara and who delights the mind of his mother Satyavatl. The nectar like words emerging from his mouth (in the form of literature), are enjoyed by the entire universe.

The one who donates a hundred cows with their horns decorated with gold leaves to the Brahmana, performing the yajha and the one who listens to the story of the Mahabharata, both of them earn almost equal merit.

The merit one earns by performing four thousand everlasting yajnas for achieving the place of Indra, and by performing a hundred Asvamedha sacrifices, the same everlasting merit is earned by donating the book of Harivamsa Purana according to the words of the sage Vyasa.

The merit are earned by performing the Vajapeya and RajasUya sacrifices, and by donating an elephant yoked chariot, the same merit is earned by a person by donating the book of Harivamsa Purana. The words of the sage Vyasa are quite authentic in this regard. The sage Valmlki has also sung about the same merit.

The one who is a great ascetic and writes the Harivarhsa according to the procedure laid down in the scriptures, he like the black wasp hovering over the flower, reaches the lotus like feet of lord Shri Krishna.

Because of the calculation of Brahma, Narayana is treated to be of the sixth generation from him, and the one who* possesses the enormous excellence, and who has emerged out of the arhsa of Narayana, having only Sukadeva as his son, (or the one who is the only son of his father Parasara) who represents the great treasure of the vedic knowledge, the same Shri Krishna-Dvaipayana, Vyasa, is odered by me.

Vyasa, Parasara, Sakti, Vasistha, Brahma and lord Narayana come in the order of six generation according to this calculation. Therefore Narayanadeva, stands at the sixth place in generation from Vyasa.

It was in the forest of Naimisaranya where Saunaka — the great sage, well versed in all the scriptures, after bowing before lord Shri Hari, who happens to be the prime cause, knower of the minds of all, having accepted offerings from thousands of yajnas, adored by innumerable devotees, form of truth, indestructible, the supreme soul, having visible and invisible forms, eternal, asat, both the forms of sat and asat, the form of the universe, beyond sat and asat, creator of the cause and the motive, the ancient one, the supreme, flawless, bestower of welfare, the form of welfare, omnipresent, acceptable by all, sinless, extremely auspicious, inspiration of the sense organs besides the preceptor of all the mobile and immobile beings, asked Ugrasrava the son of Lomaharsana Suta, thus.

Saunaka said: “O son of Suta, you have narrated the great story of the Mahabharata epic concerning the people of Bharata dynasty and other kings, the gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, Nagas, Raksasas, Daityas, Siddhas, and Guhyakas.

With your sweet voice, you have brought out the astonishing deeds of the great worriors, — their strength and their heroic deeds, results of the tattvas of dharma, the astonishing stories, the strange stories about the birth of the people, besides the ancient auspicious stories of different topics. О Ugrasrava, your nectar like narrations are blissful for the heart and the mind, leaving a satisfying effect.

O son of Lomaharsana, you, while narrating the epic of Mahabharata, have especially brought out the origin of the race of Kurus. But you have ignored the dynasties of Vrsni as well as Andhakas. Now, you please narrate about the origin of these dynasties as well.

Ugrasrava — the son of Siita then said, “O Saunaka, earlier Janamejaya had asked Vaishampayana — the religious minded son of Vyasa, I therefore narrate the story of the Vrsni dynasty, similarly from the beginning.

Listening to the complete history of the kings of Bharata dynasty, Janamejaiya — the extremely intelligent one, then said to Vaishampayana.

O best of the Brahmanas, you have briefly explained the heroic deeds of many of them and also the places connected with them. Now speak out about them exhau­stively.

I do not feel satisfied with the brief narration provided by you earlier. The Vrsnis and the Pandavas seem to belong to the same family.

О great Tapas, you are excellent in narrating the stories of the different dynasties and your profeciency has been well witnessed by us. Therefore, you king speak out about their family in an exhaustive manner.

Janamejaya said — О sage, I have heard in detail the meaningful story of the Mahabharata in a comprehensive manner.

In the story of the Mahabharata, many of the excellent warriors have been discussed. You have also highlighted the deeds of many of the warriors of Vrsni and Andhaka dynasties. (21)

O sage, I would like to know to which one of the race, each one of them was born. Therefore, starting from Prajapatis and their earlier creations you kindly explain things in full details.

Sauti said: “When he was so questioned with respect, then the illustrious sage Vaishampayana, spoke about the details their dynasties exhaustively.

Vaishampayana said, «O king, you listen to the story about the origin of the Vrsni dynasty, which is divine, auspicious, and relieves one of the sins. Several of the purvsarthas like dharma, artha, kama and moksa is included therein. It is auspicious like the Vedas, besides being wonderful, which is going to be narrated by me.

The one who learns by heart this story, or consecrates it in his house in the form of a book, or listens to it again and again, he establishng his own glory in this world, gets established even in the heaven as well.

The eternal form of truth, is cause of all the causes, and invisible Prakrti, is also called Pradhana. The Omnipotent Purusa created the universe out of it.

О great king, you should consider the enormously illustrious Brahma as Purusa. He happens to be the creator of all the living beings and is dependent on lord Narayana.

Mahattattva emerged out of Prakrti. From Mahattattva emerged aharhkara (pride), and atom emerged out of aharhkara. The solid differences of the Bhutas, emerge out of the subtle Bhutas. The flow is continuing from the time-im memorial.

Now whatever has been heard by me form any preceptors, the same is being placed or repeated before you, according to my wisdom. Accordingly, I am going to narrate the past stories exhaustively before you. This context enhances the glory of the ancestors.

The narration of auspicious glory of the noble ancestors increases the wealth and fame in the world. It destroys the enemies, increases the age and wealth besides helping in the achieving of the heaven.

You are quite suitable to keep it in your heart, the subject and are quite pure in thinking, while, I am able to narrate the subject. Therefore getting purified I shall narrate the story of the Vrsni dynasty from beginning.

Thereafter, the self born, lord Narayana, with the desire of creating several types of creatures, initially created the water. Therefore, his lSaktV was inserted in the water.

Nara is the other name of the water and sire it was created with the Sakti of lord Nara, therefore, he came to be known as Narayana.

Since the lord deposited his own Sakti in the water, it produced a huge golden egg, which remained in the water for long. The self born Brahma emerged out of the same. This is what has been heard by us.

Lord Hiranyagarbha dwelt in that egg for full one year. Ultimately the golden egg was broken into two parts. The sky was formed with its upper part, while the earth was formed with the lower part of it.

О son of Bharata, the seven Rishis including Marlci besides Rudra, started creating the universe. Skanda and Sanatkumaras both, live on earth, with their lustre.

In between both the parts of the egg, Brahma created the sky and established the earth floating over the water. Thereafter the ten directions were established.

Inside the globe he created time, the mind, speech, desire, anger, the passions and other feelings. Thereafter, for creating the creatures according to these feelings, Brahma created seven Prajapatis.

Their names have been given as Marici, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu and Vasistha. Since the immensely illustrious Brahma, created them out of his mental force, therefore, they were called as his mind born sons.

These are treated as the seven Brahmas as well in the Puranas. Since all the seven of them got devoted to lord Narayana, Brahma out of his anger, created Rudra. Then Sanatkumaras were created who happened to be the ancestors of the ancestors.

The aforesaid seven Rishis have seven vast dynasties. The gods also fall under these dynasties. The people of the seven vamsas are dutiful and each one of them had its own progeny. Some of the great sages have graced these dynasties.

Thereafter, Brahma created lightning, vajra (thunderbolt), clouds, rainbow, birds, clouds and Indra.

Then Brahma for the success of the sacrifices, created the Rk, Yajuh and Sama Vedas. Thereafter, Brahma the lord of fortunes, created the gods from his mouth and the manes from his chest.

Thereafter Brahma created the humans from his male organ, asuras from his thighs. Subsequently he created Sadhyas- the ancient gods. This is what has been heard by us.

In this way creating the people the waters appeared. Then several cratures of high and low species emerged from the other limbs of Brahma.

In this way Apava-Prajapati was creating the living beings, but their number could not increase. Then he divided his own body into two parts. He was turned male on one part and female on the other part. (Then the female took to the forms of women, cow, mare, etc. Whatever form was taken in that way the male side took just the opposite side of the same, like the bull, horse). In this way, he created several types of living beings from the female form. These creations could multiply themselves by indulging in sexual intercourse. Thus the men and women, were spread on earth by means of their own glory.

Lord Visnu the Virat-Purusa had created as (Apava Prajapati or Brahma), while Virat created Purusa. Vairaja-Purusa should be taken to be Manu (whose spouse was Satarupa)- The time of Manu has been treated to be Manavantara period.

This is the second sexual creation of Manu — the son of Apava. The Manvantara is believed to have started from this. In this way the powerful Viraja Purusa (Manu) created the living beings. Apava-Prajapati has also been called as Narayana sarga (because he actually emerged from Narayana). His creation which came into being without any human intercourse, is known as the first Sarga, (while the one created by Manu by sexual intercourse, is known as second sarga).

The one who becomes aware of the genesis of the early creation, he enjoys long life, earns glory and gratitude, has progeny besides becoming a man of letters. He achieves the best of place as per his liking.
