Expansion of creation, Naradas induces Data’s sons towards detachment, progeny of the i sixty daughters of Daksa and their Progeny

Janamejaya said: “O sage Vaisampayana, you please narrate exhaustively the story of the origin of the gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, serpents and the Raksasas.

Vaishampayana said: О king in earlier times, lord Brahma, the self born, commanded Daksa for the creation of the living beings. As a result of this the way Brahma created (jarayuja) creatures, you please listen to the same.

Initially, lord Daksa created Rishis, gods, gandharvas, asuras, raksasas, yaksas, bhutas (goblins), pisacas, animals, birds, serpents and the human beings, simply by mentally thinking about them.

But the intelligent Lord Mahadeva, reminded of the enmity of the earlier births, when thought that there should be no expansion of that creatures and as such the creatures so created by lord Brahma could not be developed or increased. Then Daksa Prajapati started thinking. He therefore after considerable thinking resolved to create the beings by sexual intercourse. According to the new idea, he brought after marriage to the glorious daughter of VIrana Prajapati, who was known by the name of Asiknl, who was capable of bearing in her womb the whole of the universe.

Thereafter Daksa Prajapati produced from Asiknl, the daughter of VIrana, five thousand sons.

However, when Narada found that all the five thousand sons of Daksa were anxious in creating further the human race, (finding, them to be capable of possessing the divine knowledge, delivered a discourse to them.) As a result of this their attraction towards the world disappeared. But by the delivering of the discourse, Narada earned a curse for himself.

The best of the sons — Narada, who has been produced by Brahma, then, getting afraid of the curse of Daksa, (the younger sister Daksa’s wife) produced a daughter.

Narada was initially born of Brahma, and the same Narada was born again from AsiknI’s younger sister the daughter of VIrana. The same sage Narada was again produced by Kasyapa like Brahma.

Clarifying the situation, it is stated that Daksa had five thousand sons known as Haryasva. Narada by imparting the divine knowledge to them made them disinterested in their bodies and they renounced the world. There is no doubt about it.

Then immensely valorous Daksa, got ready for the destruction of Narada. At that point of time Brahma together with Marlci and other sages went to Daksa and dissuaded him from so doing.

Thereafter a compromise was arrived between Brahma and Daksa. Then Daksa desired that Narada should be reborn as a son of my daughter.

Then Daksa presented his thirteen daughters to Kasyapa performed the ceremony of Kanyadana. Thus Narada, afraid of the curse of Kasyapa was reborn from the daughter of Daksa.

Janamejaya said: О best of the Brahmanas, how did the sage Narada destroyed the sons of Daksa. I would like to listen to the relevant story quite carefully.

Vaishampayana said: — Daksa’s sons named Haryasva were extremely valorous. When they thought of the expansion of the human race, then Narada said to them.

“О sons of Pracetas (Daksa) I speak with a painful heart that you are quite innocent. You have developed a desire for the creation of the living beings, but you are not aware of even this much as to what is the length and breadth of the earth where you have to create the living beings? What is its form from above and below or from inside. Under these circumstances how can you resort to the creation of the living beings.”

On hearing the words of Narada, the sons of Pracetas (Daksa) in order to know about the size of the earth moved towards all the directions.

Unable to obtain the air for breathing, all of them had to face destruction. As the rivers falling into the river cannot return similarly the sons of Daksa could not return till date.

With the destruction of Pracetas — the sons of Daksas, the daughter of VIrana again produced a thousand sons.

Then Sabalasvas — the sons of Daksa, when were about to engage themselves creation, again Narada met them with the same words, which he had spoken to their earlier brothers and inspired them to know about the size of earth.

Then ail of them delibrated amongst themselves and arrived at a conclusion that the sage Narada had spoken correctly. “Undoubtedly we should follow the path of our brothers.

We should, offering our salutations to the Earth goddess, concentrating our minds, with the pleasant or healthy heart then engage ourselvse in the work of creation.

With this resolve, all of them proceeded towards all the directions in the same way as their brothers had followed earlier and they did not return like the rivers which fall into the ocean.

After the destruction of the Sabalasvas, Daksa-Prajapati was filled with anger and he spoke to Narada, cursing him, Let your body be destroyed and you should again enter the womb of your mother”.

Since that day, when a brother goes in search of his brother, he gets himself destroyed. Therefore, a learned person should not do this or go in search of his brother.

It is heard, that Daksa Prajapati, learning about the destruction of the thousand sons as well, then again produced sixty daughters from the womb of the daughter of Virana.(This was because the girls were unable to receive the discourse of Narada).

О Janamejaya, born of the race of Kurus, the daughters with were accepted by the sage KaSyapa as his wives. Some of them were given over to the moon and the rest were accepted by Dharma as well as the other Rishis as their wives.

He had hundreds of sons and thousands of grandsons. О adorable one, the creature of the Svarocisa Manvantara has been described.

During the Vaivasvata-Manvantara, when a great sacrifice was going on, the process of creation of the living beings was going on by pairing offerings in the yajna 5re, the same is being described here.

At that point of time, Brahma — the great sire, with the resolve of his own mind, accepted the seven Rishis as his legitemate sons.

О Bharata, therefore, when the differences arose among the Daityas and gods, a hundred sons of Did were destroyed, then she again produced from the sage Kasapa

At the proper prayer, the mind of Kasyapa was please and he asked her for seeking a boon. Then Diti said, “you give me a son strong enough who could kill Indra”. On hearing Maharsi Kasyapa, granted Diti, her desired boon.

After granting the boon to her, the sage Kasyapa, spoke with a peaceful mind, “In case, while your carrying the pregnancy, you follow the method spokerf by me, then your son could kill Indra even. You have to perform the purity vrata for a hundred years, during die period when you will have to carry the child in your womb. In case you are able to maintain purity, your son would be able to kill Indra”.

Then the goddess said to his most illustrious husband “very well, I shall do so”. Then after her conception, she started living life with purity.

Then Kasyapa who illumines the exceedingly valorous ganas of the gods, then establishing the concept of Diti, left the place. The sage, whose tapas is praised by all, after implainting his terrific semen in the womb of Diti proceeded on to the moun- tain for the performing of tapas.

On the other hand Indra, searched for any short — coming in Diti and he well before the completion of a hundred years spotted her short coming.

О Janamejaya, when these living beings were so grown up, then Hari, who always illuminates the groups of gods, included the Maruts in the groups of gods. О Bharata, then he initially entrusted the kingship to Prthu. Since then the kingdom is going on.

Once, Diti, went for sleep without washing her feet. At the same time, Indra, entered her womb and with his illosion, he made her sleep.

The same Hari is also known as Purusa, Vira, Krishna and Prajapati, beside being the sun, the invisible one and the world belongs to him.

Then Indra — the holder of vajra, cut her womb into seven pieces with his vajra, as result of which, the womb started crying.

Then Indra repeated by asked the womb not to cry but the womb was divided into seven pieces. Then Indra the destroyer his enemies, getting enraged, cut each one of the seven pieces into another seven pieces with the use of vajra. О best of the Bharatas, these fortynine pieces (when bom) came to be known as fortynine Maruts gods.

Since Indra had asked then not to weep, therefore, they were called the Maruts who helped Indra — the holder of vajra.

О Bhartarsabha, by knowing the past creations completely, and by listening to the origin of the Maruts, or reading about them, the danger of birth and death disappears, then in that case, where could be the fear in the other world.

Here ends Chapter 3 of Harivarnsa Purana — the Khila Bhaga of the Mahabharata relating to the origin of the Maruts. (Vrs. 1-140, P.T.= 251)
