The dynasties of Svyambhuva Manu, and birth of Daksa Prajapati

Vaishampayana said: — О Janamejaya, after the creation of (sexual and mental) living beings, Apava-Prajapati, (dividing his own-self body into two parts), became a man known as Manu from his own part and he, with the second part of his body accepted Satarupa (not created by sexual inter- course) as his wife.

By illumining the sky with his own lustre Satariipa was created by dharma, who became his wife.

The same Satariipa performed hard tapas for ten thousand years, then while possessing the lustre, she went to her husband vairaja with the desire of begetting a son.

Dharma had a beautiful daughter who was slender waisted, who appeared from the Asvamedha sacrifice, performed by Dharma. The same who was the bestower of welfare, was the mother of Dhruva.

Uttanapada — the Parjapati, produced four sons named Dhruva, KIrtiman, Santasvarupa, Siva and Ayuspati.

The same person is called Svayambhuva Manu. His Manvantara includes seventy one chatur yugas (Satyayuga, Treta, Dvapara, Kaliyuga).

A son named VIra — was produced by Manu form his wife Satariipa. Then Vira- the son of Manu produced two sons named Priyavrata and Uttanapada, from his wife Kamya.

О long — armed one, there was a daughter of sage Kardama, known by the name of Kamya who gave birth to four sons known as Samrat, Kuksi, Virat, and Prabhu. Kamya was wedded to Priyavrata and the sons were produced by her from him.

Prajapati Atri accepted Uttanapada as a son. Uttanapada, produced four sons from his wife Siinrta.

Dhruva who belonged to the Bharata dynasty, also known as MahayaSa, performed tapas for three thousand divine years, for the achieving of lord Narayana.

Lord Brahma — the preserver of the universe, was pleased with the tapas of Dhruva, established him at a unique, heavenly and everlasting place among the Seven Rishis.

Obeserving the enormous glory and advancement of Dhruva, the gods and the demons’ precptor Sukracarya, recited the following verse.

‘Observing the tapas of Dhruva, one feels surprised, his knowledge of Sastras also surprises a person. His Safcri-powers too is wonderful, because of which even the Saptarsis also establish Dhruva as the foremastry them all.

Sambhu the wife of Dhruva, gave birth to two sons named Slisthi and Bhavya. Slisthi produced from his wife Suchhaya, produced five sons named Ripu, Ripunjaya, Punya, Vrkala and Vrkateja. Ripu produced from his wife Brhati, a son named Caksusa, having the entire lustre of the gods.

Caksusa on the other hand produced a son named Manu, from his wife Paskarini- the daughter, of Virani. In the race of Vairaja Prajapati, the illustrious Manu was born, who produced ten best sons from his wife Nadvala — the daughter of the sage Aramja.

The sons of Nadvala are known as Uru, Puru, Satdyumna, Satyavan, Tapasvi, Kavi, Agnaisthut, Atiratri and Sudyumna, besides Abhimanyu the tenth. Uru produced ten illustrious sons from the daughter of Agni, who were known as Anga, Sumuna, Khyati, Kratu, Angira and Gaya.

Sunitha, the daughter of Mrtyu, produced by Anariga, a son named Vena. Vena was an autocrat and cruel and was envious of the gods, (Dharma and others), therefore the Rishis became envious and angry with him.

The right hand of Vena, which was destroyed because of the curse of the Rishis was churned by the sages for getting the progeny and Prthu was born.

Looking at Prthu, Rishis said, “He would please the Rishis. This illustrious king will achieve great glory.

Then the sons of Prthu, who were initially born in the ksatriya race held the bow, kavaca, and sword, with their prowess, the stared protecting the earth, reducing the evil people to ashes.

Prthu was the first among the kings who were crowned with Rajasuya yajha. From the fire of the same yajna, at die prayer of the kings, competent charioteers and bards were born.

The king Prthu -of the.Bharata race, for the sake of providing the livelihood, had milked the earth goddess in the form of a cow, yeilding the cereals and other things.

During the time of Prthu, the earth was milked by manes, Danvas, Gandharvas, Apsaras, serpents, Yaksas, the trees and the mountains in their respective vases. The Earth goddess yielded the milk as per the respective desire of each one of thefti. While consuming the milk, they could prolong their lives.

Pithu had two sons named Antardhana and Palita who were quite religious minded..Antardhana produced from Sikhandini a son named Havirdhan.

Havirdhan produced from Dhisana — daughter of Agni, produced six sons, known as Praclnabarhi, Sukla, Gaya, Krishna, Braja and Ajin.

The lord Praclnabarhi who served the people maintained them, was well disposed towards the people better than his father Havirdhan.

О Janamejaya, the Kusa grass spread over the vast land, at the time of the performing of the sacrifice, highlighted his glory, therefore he was called lord Praclnabarhi.

Praclnbarhi, the lord of earth, performed severe tapas, married Savarna the daughter of the ocean.

Savarna - the daughter of the ocean produced ten sons from Praclnabarhi. All were known by the names of Praceta and they excelled in the science of archery.

All the Pracetqs followed similarly all the religious practices, were quite humble. All of them entered the ocean and performed tapas there for ten thousand years.

During the period when Pracetas were engaged in the performing of tapas, then the uncared for earth was surrounded by the trees from all the four sides, which resulted in the destruction of the people.

During ten thousand years, the trees even covered the sky. Then the blowing of the air was; stopped. Even the human activities came to stop.

Because of the divine sight possessed by them, Precetas became aware of the deplorable condition of the world and getting enraged, they produced the wind and fire from their mouths.

The wind uprooted the trees and dried them up, while the fire started burning them. In this way the trees started getting destroyed.

Thus with the burning of the trees only a few of them remained, then Soma, the king of the trees went to the Pracetas and said to them.

O Pracetas, the sons of Praclnabarhis, you have destroyed the trees on earth. Therefore, О kings, you now put a stop to your anger besides the blowing of the wind and fire.

This is the gem like beautiful daughter of the trees, who had been established by one in my belly keeping in view the tattvas of future.

This girl is known by the name of Marisa has been born of the juice of the trees. Therefore you accept this girl of the Soma dynasty as your wife.

Because of the tapas of mine as well as of yours, this girl will produce a son, who would be known by the name of Daksa Prajapati.

With the fire of your tapas Daksa would be illustrious like the fire and would preserve the people over the earth which has been burnt with fire.

At these words of the moon, the Pracetas mentally established the seed in the womb of Marisa. О king of Bharata dynasty, thus with the arhsa of the moon, the ten Pracetas established in the womb of Marisa an illustrious son. As a result of this, Daksa Prajapati was born.

Then Daksa Prajapati produced the sons, who expanded the race of the moon. They included mobile and immobiles, having two or four feet. Then he resorted to the creation of the females.

Then Daksa gave away in marriage ten girls to the Dharma thirteen of them to Kasyapa, and twentyseven of them named after the constellations to the king moon.

The gods, birds, serpents, cows, Daityas, Danavas, Gandharvas, Apsaras and living beings of other species were born out of these girls.

О king of kings, the living beings were born by sexual intercourse. Earlier to this the living beings were created by mental exercises, by looks and touch. This is said.

Janamejaya said, О sage, you have already spoken about the creation of the gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, serpents, Raksasas, as also the origin of Daksa.

О sinless great sage, you had earlier stated that Daksa was born out of the right big toe of Brahma, while the wife of Daksa was born out of the left big toe of Brahma.

Then how could Daksa be the son of Pracetas? How could Daksa’s daughter’s son-Daksa could again become his father- in-law? О great Brahmana, you kindly remove my doubts, explaining the situation completely.

Vaishampayana spoke: О lord of earth, the birth and death is quite natural for all the living beings. The Rishis are never influenced with illusion in this connection. The learned people also never get confused in the matter.

О king, Daksa and others are born in each one of the yugas and they meet with their end as well. Therefore the people with wisdom never get confused with the same.

О king, there was no consideration of the earlier or later births in such cases. Only tapas was supreme, in their eyes, the influence of which was the only cause of the relationship.

A person, who knows the tattva of Daksa Prajapatis in relation to the mobile and immobile living beings, he achieves progeny. He overcoming all the misfortunes spends time gracefully in the heaven.

Here ends Chapter 2, of Harivamsa Parva of the Harivamsa Purana relating to the birth of Daksa etc. (Vrs.1-57, P.T.= III)
