Crowning of Shri Krishna as the king

Janamejaya said: О sage, Shri Krishna- the killer of Kamsa, had never been crowned as the king, nor did he occupy the lion throne. What was the reason for the same?

Lord Krishna had arrived at Kundanpur for the sake of the girl (or the princess) but there also he was never treated as an invited guest. How could Shri Krishna tolerate such a great insult and he pardoned them.

Garuda — the son of Vinata is also possessing enormous strength. What for did he remain unconcerned with all this (humiliation)? You kindly tell me, О master, I am quite anxious to learn about the same.

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, (krath and Kausika) were the two devotees of the lord, who had arrived there to shower his grace on them.) When both Shri Krishna and Garuda went to the city of Vidarvbha, Kausika at that point of time, thought in his mind this.

(In case both the brothers perform abhiseka of Krishna, then all our sins would be washed out and the minds of both of us would be purified. Therefore, I shall inform all the rulers, “At the sight of Shri Krishna the sins of all the people are washed out. Both of us have witnessed the tattva of Shri Krishna pretty well. There is no one more worthy in the three worlds, then Shri Krishna also known as Janandana.

О king, both of us welcoming him, what should be offered to him by which we might not earn any blemish for not honouring him properly.”

Thus both the brothers Kratha and Kausika mutually consulted each other and went to lord Kesava to present their kingdom to him.

Both the lords of the Vidarbha country, reaching before Shri Krishna, and offering their salutation to him, they spoke to him, “O lord, with your arrival here, our lives have met with success, besides our glory. All our manes have also been pleased and satisfied.

This fly whisk, materials, umbrella the flag, the lion throne, the army and the entire city, the treasure which is filled with fortunes are presented to you by both the brother. All these belong to you hence forth.

О valorous one, you happen to be Upendra. Indra himself has performed abhiseka for you. We also perform abhiseka for you over this kingdom. We are handing over the entire country to you.

When we have presented this country to you, no other ruler on earth shall have any objection to it including the king Jarasandha. None can do it otherwise.

Jarashadha — the powerful king of the Magadha country, is your enemy. Becoming inimical to you he has provided protection to other rulers. He is daily engaged in planing harm to you.

No lion throne is worthy of occupation of Shri Krishna, because in the community of the kings, there is none comparable with the talents of Shri Krishna — the son of Devaki. Therefore how could Devaki’s son Krishna occupy the lion throne in the community of these kings.

Shri Krishna is immensely powerful, proud and extremely illustrious. He never attends the svayambara of a girl.

When the rulers occupy their own lion thrones, then how could the illustrious Shri Krishna occupy a lower seat.”

When so asked by him, Bhishmaka — the king, listening to his talk, consulted both of us and in order to put the dispute at rest, he built a separate abode for your stay.

О lord, you are the foremost lord of the gods. The entire world offers salutation at your feet. Therefore, you live in the world as the lord of kings, as a result of which no controversy could arise about you sitting arrangement.

О resplendant Govinda, vou shatter the surpriority of these rulers in the Vidarbha country. You occupy the lion throne in the dancing hall, tomorrow morning.

You perform today the ceremony of adhivasa today itself. Tomorrow I shall make such an arrangement that by command of Indra, all the people arrive to attend your abhiseka,”

Thus speaking both the valorous Kratha and Kausika, offered their salutation to Shri Krishna and sent lion throne to the dancing hall which had been filled with the rulers.

The immensely illustrious Kausika himself wrote down the message given by Indra to the messenger and read it out to the rulers present there, the message of Indra.

Kausika said: О kings, all of you are aware, that Shri Krishna who never falls from his glory, has arrived in the city of Vidarbha with Garuda.

Finding his arrival and considering him worthy of all, our entire kingdom has given over by Kratha to lord Vasudeva, in order to earn merits. Then my brother said to Vasudeva, О lord, this lion throne is presented to you, which may please be occupied by you.” At these words of Kratha, an invisible voice from the sky declared thus.

The messenger said: О king, it would not be proper for you to give such a lion throne for Shri Krishna, which has already been used by others. For Shri Krishna, the divine lion throne studded with gems is presented here, which is made of Jambunada gold and is glittering. This has been built by Visvakarma himself. Figure of lion has been made over it. This throne has been sent be Indra — the god of gods. Let lord Krishna whose feet are adored by all, be seated over it. After Shri Krishna is seated over it, then his abhiseka should be performed by other rulers.

All the rulers, who have joined at Kundanpur, (should attend the abhiseka) and who so ever does not do so, he could be killed by him.

These are the eight everlasting pitchers, which belong to Kubera — the lord of riches, and have been studded with gems. Their seats as well as the ornaments are also divine. These pitchers are being brought for the purpose of the abhiseka of Shri Krishna, together with the rulers.

О rulers, I have repeated to you the message of Indra. Therefore (following the written command of Indra, all the rulers should be summoned and the abhiseka of Shri Krishna should be performed.”

Kausika said: With this insperation and presenting the lion throne shining like the morning sun, the divine messenger who remained in the sky returned to the heaven.

Because of that I am inspiring you for the performing of the abhiseka of Shri Krishna. Such of the people who have arrived here, it would be difficult for them to deny this command of Indra, which could be dangerous.

Abhiseka of Shri Krishna will be performed from the sky it self with eight pitchers. Such a sight is difficult to get. All of you should also attend this festival witnessing this astonishing sight, all your sins shall be washed out.

O excellent kings, you should arrive here for bathing Shri Krishna — the god of gods. Donot be afraid of it.

For your sake, we have entered into a compromise with Janardana. Lord Hari is providing protection to all. We have well understood and witnessed the form of Shri Krishna. He always has the best and the auspicious intentions for you.

Particularly, no enmity is visible in his heart against Jarasandha, the king of Magadha. Therefore whatever situation has arisen here, you should consider it deeply.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening to thses words, the rulers, apprehensive of the curse, felt worried variously. In the mean time, the rulers, heard the divine voice from the sky again.

From the command of Devaraja, remaining invisible, spoke in deep voice like the clouds, which filled the sky.

Chitrangada said: Indra — the lord of the three worlds, desires your welfare for the maintaining of the people and commands you as under.

О kings, all of you, should not be inimical to Shri Krishna or becoming jealous for him. You should not be inimical to one another. Developing love for one another, you should live peacefully with one another.

Shri Krishna removes the sufferings of those who take refuge with him, but he is death like for the enemy army and is dangerous like the fire. You should live peacefully developing cordiality with him.

For ordinary people king is the god and is adorable. Indra is the god of gods and lord Krishna is the god for Indra.

He is lord Visnu — the god of gods. Kesava has incarnated on earth in human form.

All the gods, Danavas and humans can never overpower him. He is invincible by Siva and Kartikeya even.

I desire that Kesava — the god of gods, should be crowned as Rajendra, what could be a better desire with me than this.

But no god is enpoered to perform abhiseka over the position of Rajendra and because of the same, I am unable to perform abhiseka of Shri Krishna who is adorable by the universe, myself.

О rulers, only the kings can establish a ruler over the position of Rajendra. Therefore all of you, together with Kratha and Kausika, after due consideration and then perform abhiseka of Shri Krishna appropriately.

О kings, this is the time for you to enter into a mental agreement among yourself, therefore in order to advise you properly I have been deputed as a messenger by the gods.

О best of kings, lord Krishna is currently staying in the Vidarbha country and his adhvasa Sarhskara has since been performed. The kings named Krath and Kausika have already made arrangement for his crowning ceremony. All of you, О kings, should participate in the said festival and honour him delightfully, by joining the crowning ceremony. After circumem- bulating Shri Krishna, you should return and join the festival о Svayambara.

Let this dancing hall not be deserted and for that purpose, the best of four rulers should stay here including Jarasadha, Sunltha, Rukmi, Salva and the king of Sanbhasa.”

Vaishampayana said — Thus listening to the command of lord Indra, spoken by Citrangada, all the rulers resolved to join the crowning ceremony of Shri Krishna. The intelligent king Jarasandha too permitted all the rulers to join the function.

Thereafter all the rulers under the leadership of Bhismaka went to Vidarbha with their armies and reached the place of Kausika where Shri Krishna had been staying. At that point of time the heart of Bhismaka was burning in pain because of the fault of his son, overwhelmed with anxiety.

The divine assembly of the gods, reached on earth for the bathing of Shri Krishna, which was shining from a distance. The divine flags were fluttering.

The divine banners added to its grace and they were decorated with the divine ornaments. The luster of the divine gems was spreading every where.

At several places the garlands of divine flowers were hanging over it. It issued various types of fragrance. The gods travelling by that assembly had surrounded it from all the sides.

The groups of divine apsaras, the crowds of Vidyadharas. Gandharvas, and Kinnaras, remaining in the sky started singing the songs of the glory of Shri Krishna, while the sages, siddhas, and the Maharsis uttered praise for him.

The kattle drums of the gods were sounded in the sky. The gods staying in the sky were dropping the fine types of fragrant powder.

Indra himself arrived there boarding a plane and he was visible to everyone.

All the right Lokapalas, taking positions in their respective directions were dancing and singing the glory of the lord.

Listening to the combined sound of their dance and music, the eyes of all the rulers felt blossomed with surprise and they entered the auspicious divine assembly.

At that point of time the valorous Kausika, went to all the rulers, adored all of them individually and brought them in.

When the lord was informed about the arrival of all the rulers, then he was adviced with all the welfare material and he came out to his abode.

Then the divine Kalasas from the sky the necks of which were decorated with cloths and the mango leaves, started pouring water over the lord like the rain fall.

The divine kalasas which were made of gold and studded with gems, at the time of abhiseka of the lord, poured fragrant water over the lord which was mixed with fragrant powder according to the method prescribed in the scriptures. Thus the ceremony of abhiseka of Shri Krishna was completed. Thereafter he was clad in the best of costumes and adorned with the best of ornaments making him fit for his audience with the rulers.

Thereafter, all the rulers were suitably honuored and welcomed with the supply of costumes, ornaments, and fragrant pastes. Thereafter Shri Krishna, entered the divine assembly, which had arrived from the heaven, with the permission of the rulers, for bathing of Shri Krishna. Then he occupied the divine lion throne.

At that point of time Yadavas as well as the rulers of the Vidarbha were standing in attention. Garuda — who could take to any form at will, taking to human form, stood to the right of the lord. The valorous Kratha and Kausika at the command of the lord, took their seats to his left with his permission. Similarly, the great warriors of Vrsni and Andhaka, besides the great warriors Satyaki and others took their seats to the left of Shri Krishna.

Shri Krishna who was resplendent like the sun, occupied the divine lions throne covered with excellent cloth, quite comfortably and appeared like Indra — the lord of Sad, seated, surrounded by the gods.

Thereafter all the rulers receiving the royal command from the courtiers, entered the assembly hall. All the rulers adored lord Krishna appropriately and then they occupied their seats with comfort.

Thereafter Kausika the immensely learned and best of the orators, who was also well versed in the scriptures, worshipped lord Krishna and then spoke.

Kausika said: О lord, О god, all the rulers out of ignorance, only know this much that you are a human being only. Therefore they have committed a sin against you. Therefore you forgive them for their sins.

Shri Krishna said: О Kausika, the enmity does not remain in my mind even for a day and more so in respect of the rulers, who follow the ksatriyas dharma, who enter the war taking it to be a dharma. They turn their face from adharma. Then what for one should be angry with them. О rulers of the earth, whatever is past, those who are dead have proceeded on to the heaven. This is the natural way of the world, that people are born here and meet with their death.

Therefore, О ruler, you should not grieve for those who are dead and have been killed. Personality, I like forgiveness. Therefore all the rulers of the earth shedding away enmity should be free from jealousy and vindictiveness.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, thus speaking to the rulers, assuring them at the same time, the immensely illustrious lord Madhusiidana, kept quite looking at the face of Kausika.

At that point of time, the king Bhismaka - the foremost of the orators and well versed in polity said.

Here ends chapter — 50, of Visnu Paiva of the Harivathsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the crowning of Shri Krishna as the king. (Vrs. 1-91, P.T. = 5794)
