Return of Krishna and Balarama to Mathura





Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, thereafter, both the brothers, together with Damaghosa, the ruler of Chedi country, proceeded on their journey. They moved on following the rulers, they spent five nights while travelling, but in the company of Damaghosa it appeared to them as it they had covered the distance in a single night. Thus having been filled with delight, both the valorous sons of Vasudeva reached the city of Mathura in short time.

At that point of time, Ugrasena, together with his army and other Yadavas, came forward to welcome the princes of Yadu’s race.

Several of the artisans, earning their livelihoods by various means and belonging to various castes, the courtiers, the boys and the elderly persons, besides the entire people of Mathura, engaged themselves in wecoming Shri Krishna and others.

The delightful musical instruments of welfare were sounded. Both the valorous were praised by the people variously. All the roads and lanes were decorated with flags and banners. All became delightful in Mathura.

With the arrival of both the brothers, the entire city looked graceful with delight.

The singers sang the delightful songs and stories in honour of the Yadavas.

An announcement was made everywhere that the world renowned brothers Shri Krishna and Balarama have arrived in our city. Therefore all the people should enjoy themselves with comfort.

With the arrival of Balarama and Shri Krishna, no one with faded face or in sad or miserable condition could be seen.

The birds were issuing sweet notes, the cows, horses and the elephants, were extremely delighted. The hearts of men and women of the city also blossomed very well.

The cool and comfortable breezes started blowing. The dust of all the ten direction was removed. All the gods in the temples were also delighted.

What events occur at the time of the start of Satyayoga on earth, all of the were repeated in Mathura on the arrival of Shri Krishna and Balarama in Mathura.

Thereafter, both the valorous warriors entered in the city mounted over the chariot driven by the horses.

At the time of their entry in the city of Mathura, by Shri Krishna and Balarama, all the Yadavas followed them, like the gods following Indra.

Both Krishna and Balarama, the sons of the race of Yadu then entered the abode of Vasudeva, as the sun and the moon enter the mountain caves. The faces of both of them at that time, were beaming with delight.

Placing their weapons in the abode, both the prides of the race of Yadu, and sons of Vasudeva, started roaming about at will.

Thereafter, pressing both the feet of their father Vasudeva, and honouring Ugrasena and other senior people of Yadavas, and getting felicitated by all, having been filled with delight, both the brothers then went to the abode of their mother.

Both of them represented one and the same tattva, who had incarnated for accomplishment of one and the same purpose, both Shri Krishna and Balarama, following the king Ugrasena, stayed their for some time.

Here ends chapter — 45, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata relating to the return of Krishna and Balarama to Mathura. (Vrs. 1-19, P.T. = 5479)

Chapter 46

Balarama’s visit to Braj

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, after some time, having been reminded of the affection of the cowherds, with the consent of Shri Krishna, Balarama went to Braj alone.

Reaching there he visited large number of fragrants forests and the lokas, which had already been used by him.

Balarama — the elder brother of Krishna entered Braj with great speed. At that point of time, the influential Balarama, was dressed in the cowherds costumes.

Balarama — the destroyer of the enemies, met all the cowherds in rustic manners in an appropriate way to all the young and old, talking to them at the same time.

Не enhanced the delight of all them before, and talked to them sweetly. He sweetly conversed with the milkmaids, quite pleasently as his did earlier.

Balarama who had been the foremost of the delightful people, had returned home, after visiting other contries he was the beloved of the cowherds. Therefore, the senior cowherds spoke sweetly to him thus.

«O valorous one — the delight of the race of Yadus, you are welcome here. О son, we are quite happy today, because we have got an oppurtunity to meet you after a long time.

О valorous one, we are extremely delighted at your return to this place. You frighten the enemies, О Balarama, you are well known in the three worlds.

О valorous son of the race of Yadus, you have enhanced ouer grace by reaching here, which is quite appropriate for you or otherwise all feel happy in their birth place.

О son with spotless face, you have graced us immensely as a result of which, we have become adorable by the gods even. We had always desired for your visit here.

It is a matter of great fortune that both the wrestlers had been killed at the hands of both of you. Karhsa had also been killed and Ugrasena was crowned as the king again. Ugrasena had been again crowned as the king because of his noble nature.

We have heard that you were engaged in a fight with a crocodile named Timi, in which Pancajana was killed. Thereafter you fought a great war with Jarasandha at Mathura. Not only that, we have heard that you also fought a great war with the Ksatriyas near the mountain Gomantaka.

In that war, the king Darada was killed and Jarasandha was defeated. We have heard that in that battle ground, you received the divine weapons from the sky.

Besides, you killed the king Shrigala of Karavirapur, his son was crowned as the king by you, assuring the people of the place variously at the same time.

Thereafter you entered Mathura, which is to be adored by gods even. Lowering the burden of the earth, you have established her well. You have overpowered all the rulers 3f the earth.

With your arrival here, we have again become fortunates. We now feel pleased in every way. We now feel immensely delighted with over kiths and kins.”

Then Balarama spoke to all the cowherds, who had been standing before him, “Inspite of all the Yadavas, you indeed are our real kiths and kins. We have spent our childhood here, you people have brought us up. Then how can we forget you?

We have eaten in your homes, grazed the cows, all of your love us the most and are our relatives.”

When Balarama, the carrier of a plough, so talked to the people in a realistic way, the faces of milkmaids of Braj, listening to the talk, blossomed with delight.

Thereafter the valorous Balarama, started roaming about in the forest. At that point of time, the cowherds, realising the mental urge of Balarama, brought Varum (drink) for his consumption, which was consumed by Balarama.

The drink Balarama had in the forest was intoxicating. After his drinking the same the cowherd boys brought the forest flowers and the fruits of various types, which were quite fresh. Besides these, the gopa — boys also presented to him several types of etables besides the auspicious fragrance. They also presented to him the fresh lotus flowers which had recently been brought.

The hair of the head of Balarama was quite beautiful. The crown placed over the head was a bit slanting. An ear ring was hanging in one of his ear. Fragnant paste had been applied over his chest which appeared yellow in colour. A garland of forest flowers was hanging over his chest. As a result of this he appeared so graceful as the Mandaracala mountain looks graceful over the Kailasa mountain.

He was clad in two blue garments resembling the fresh clouds. His body had a fair complexion and he appeared like a moon at night.

He held the plough in one hand which resembled a serpent and a rnUsala in the other.

Balarama — the foremost of the valorous people was intoxicated with the drinking of Varunl. His face was beaming. He appeared like the fatigued moon after winter season.

At that point of time, Balarama said to Yamuna, «O great river, I want to take a bath in your water. О beloved of ocean, you arrive here and come along with me.”

Because of his being under the influence of intoxication, Yamuna just ignored him, because of her womanly nature, and she did not arrive at the desired place.

Then Balarama under the influence of intoxication, got enraged and he dragged the river with his plough lowering the head.

The garland of lotus flowers worn by Balarama around his neck was broken at the time of his dragging the river Yamuna, which started pouring the red juice.

The plough, the prepart of which had been bent a little, was linked to the bank of the Yamuna like a woman who moved at his own will, the great river was dragged by Balarama towards himself.

The water of the river was disturbed. The water collected in the kunda, started flowing from the same. The river getting frightened started by the avenue marked by the plough.

The line drawn by the plough was indicative of the path to be followed by the river. The river who flowed over the straight path, started moving slowly over the curved route. She was frightened from Sariikarsana and felt disturbed like a young girl.

Both the banks were her buttocks, the bunch of red lotus flowers stood for her red lips. The foam was her waist band, which had been shattered with the disturbance in the water. The maid in the foam of the river, was about to unite with the ocean - her beloved.

The ornaments of her head in the form of waves were moving up and down. Her breasts in the form of rudy-birds had risen up. Her deep limbs were getting curved due to the force of water. She was adorned with the ornaments of fish swimming in the water.

The white swans were the comer of the eyes. The reds flower were her flowing costumes. The greenery at the banks and the trees stood for her hair and the flowing of water represented her movement.

The lower parts of her eyes had been scratched as if the damsel proceeding to join the ocean had been disturbed. She walked over the open road like the intoxicated wicked women.

The flow of the uneven water stood for her stumbling while walking. She had been brought to the opposite direction towards Vrandavana.

The river Yamuna had been brought through the middle of Vrndavana. The aquatic animals were following her and were chirping. It appeared as if the chirping of the birds stood for the cries of the river Yamuna.

When the river cossed Vrndavana then she taking to the form of a damsel said to Balarama.

“O Master, be pleased, I am frightened with your opposite deed. My form and the water has been reversed.

When I reach the ocean, at that point of time my co-wives getting proud of their force would make a fun of me with their from as if laughing at me. They would term me the one moving with water in the opposite direction.

O elder brother of Shri Krishna, О best of the great warriors, be merciful on me. I beg you, kindly remain always happy with me.

О warrior of the plough as a weapon, I have been dragged upto this place with your plough. You better reverse your anger. I bow in reverance at your feet. О valorous one, you indicate the path to me. Where should I go.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, finding Yamuna — the spouse of the ocean, so offering her salutation at his feet, Balarma, feeling fatigued with the consuming of the drink and said.

«O auspicious one, I have indicated the path to you by drawing with my bow. You better supply your water to the entire region.

O beautiful, you are pleasent to look at, this is the message meant for you. Be peaceful. Your can now move as you like. My glory shall always remain till the world lasts.

Finding the dragging of the river Yamuna, all the people praised Balarama, offering their salutation to him.

Seeing off the river Yamuna and the people of Braj, Balarama, the son of Rohini, mentally thought for a moment and at once proceeded on to Mathura.

Reaching Mathura, Balarama found eternal Madhusudana — the essence of the earth, turning sides lying over the bed.

Then Balarama clad in the same traveller’s dress, wearing the garland of fresh forest flowers, having beautiful chest, embrased lord Janardana.

Finding Balarama — the holder of plough, arriving rapidly, Govinda got up at once and gave him an excellent seat.

After Balarama took his seat, then Shri Krishna enquired from him the welfare of Braj including those of the cows and the relatives.

Then Balarama, replied to Shri Krishna — the excellent orator thus, “O Krishna, those of whom, you want to know their welfare, they are all perfectly well.

Thereafter, the narration of the earlier stories of (the child hood of) Balarama and Krishna started before Vasudeva.
