Departure of Shri Krishna towards Mathura





Bhishmaka said — О lord, Rukmi - my son, because of his talkative or foolish nature intends to give away his sister in marriage by means of Svayambara. But I do not want to do so.

Because of his extreme foolish or childish nature he wants his sister to be given in Svayambara. This is what I feel. What I beleive is that she should get you as her husband.

Therefore, О lord, because of the evil mindedness of my son, (accepting my sin,) I intend to please you. 0 lord of gods, you kindly continue your grace on me and forgive me for my blemishes.

Shri Krishna spoke — О king, you son, during his childhood itself had created disturbance among the entire community of rulers. When he comes of age, who knows how arrogant would he be?

In earlier times, while speaking on the universal dharma, had ordained that I am aware that the kings who are glorious like the sun and the moon, having been born in the high race because of their performing high tapas, when even one of them speaks falsehood, then he has to bum himself to ashes as a matter of punishment.

Under these circumstansce, why should a son speak falsehood in the presence of the assembly of the rulers.

Your son has built such a huge dancing hall but you are not aware of it. I therefore feel doubtful on hearing it.

The rulers possessing the lustre of the sun and the moon besides the fire, have arrived here. You have honoured them all adoring them appropriately. (Then how are you unaware of the happenings).

O king, the chariots, horses, elephants and the foot soldiers comprising of the four fold army has been destroyed. It is all due to blemished efforts of your son. How could you remain unaware of it?

О king, why could you not apprehend that the arrival of such huge armies, nothing untowards would happen. This aspect has not attracted you attention. Therefore, I feel doubtful.

О lord of the rulers, my arrival here itself is not for your benefit. Feeling thus, you, thinking me to be unsuitable, have not welcomed me.

О king, leaving me alone, you better give your daughter to any one of the suitable king here. Because of the blemish of my arrival why should you not give away your daughter in marriage.

A person who obstructs the marriage of a girl has to face burning in the fire of hall. This has been prescribed by Manu in his dharmasastra.

О lord of the people, this is the reason, that I have not entered the dancing hall. О lord of the people, I had learnt earlier, that your house was devoid of the guests.

This is the reason, that I camped my army in Vidarbha. Because of this, I, inspite of my being the king of rulers, had to face shameful situation. (Because had I not rested here, then I would not have to face the humility of not getting honoured at your end.

Inspite of that both myself and Garuda were fully welcomed, because the king Kausika honours the guests. Both of us have been quite comfortable here as we were in Vaikuntha.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus speaking, Shri Krishna, who had attacked like vajra. Thereafter the king Bhishma spoke the nectar like sweet voice to Shri Krishna, who was burning like fire flames and pacified him.

Bhishmaka said — О lord of the heaven, you kindly be pleased with me. О lord of the universe, you please save me. I have been plunged in darkness. You kindly bestow on me the vision of knowledge.

Having been born in the human race being a ball of flesh and having the same vision (of an ordinary human) I have been deprieved of the vision of knowledge. Therefore, by acting thoughtlessly, I do not meet with success in my efforts.

You are the lord of gods, by taking j refuge in you let my vision be impoved to be the best, and let all my efforts be successful.

As the chief commander successfully leads even the incompetent army to success, similarly a learned person, makes an infinished task successful in case it be justified.

By taking refuge in you, I am no more afraid of anyone. You kindly listen to me, whatever is there in my mind.

I do not want to give my daughter to anyone of the rulers who have arrived for svayambara. You kindly be merciful on me instead of getting annoyed on me.”

Shri Krishna said — О immensely intelligent monarch, you only talk what shall happen with the talk? О sinless one, who is there to prevent you from giving your daughter to anyone?

I should not speak out that you give your daughter to me and not to anyone else Rukmini is the goddess with divine form. The divinity alone is the cause of her future relationship with me.

In earlier times, the gods, when assembled over the peak of the Meru mountain, had made to descend their respective arhsas on earth collectively. At that point of time Brahma said to Laksmi, “O goddess, you also descend with your husband on earth and take birth from the womb of the queen of the king Bhishmaka the rulers of Kundinpur on earth. О goddess with broadhips, you should do so being merciful on Indra.

О king, therfore, I am talking to you in a natural way. There is nothing artificial in it. Learning about it, your daughter Rukmini, would herself act taking into account her duty. She will do whatever is proper for her, because she is not at all an ordinary woman. She is the incarnation of Laksmi herself and has appeared on earth at the instance of Brahma for a specific purpose.

She is not good enough to perform the modalities of Svayambara before the rulers. A girl should be given in marriage to a single groom alone. This is the eternal dharma.

О monarch, you cannot give away Laksmi in the svayambara. It would be quite appropriate to give her hand to a suitable person in marriage as Kanyadana.

Because of this, Garuda the son of Vinata has arrived here in order to create obstruction in the Svayambara.

I had arrived here to have a view of the great gathering of the monarchs as well as Laksmi without lotus.

О king, О lord of earth, whatever have you spoken to me, begging forgiveness, that is correct also. I take it to be quite appropriate. There is no reason to find any blemish in it.

О excellent one, I have already spoken in this regard. There is no ill feeling in it. Therefore, you should take it that, I have forgiven you.

О king, the persons who forgive, possess several virtues. Forgiveness removes many of the blemishes. How can the evil ideas remain in your mind.

О best of the monarchs, you have been born in a spotless race, possess consciousness, and are truthful. How could the blemish remain in the heart of noble person like you.

I have arrived here with my army. Therefore you should beleive it that I am a forgivable person and I do not take my army in the enemy territory.

Becoming intolerable, when I attack the enemy army, then I mount on Garuda and I hold weapons in my hands which shine like the sun and the moon.

O monarch, father is the most adorable person for me, who happens to be of the same age as you are. (Therefore, you are also my father like). You better rule over your city appropriately and remain adorable by the Ksatriyas.

О Rajendra, the evil feelings remain in the hearts of cowards. How could the unblemished thoughts remain in people with spotless hearts.

My intentions are totally free from blemishes which should be well realised by you pretty well. We love our sons like the father. Both Kratha and Kausika — the monarchs of Vidarbha, also have the noble temperament.

Both of them, while welcoming me, gave away their kingdom to me. Because of this charity the ancestors of their ten earlier generations have attanied heaven.

The rulers of their future ten generations like sons and grandsons, shall also achieve heaven, as a result of this charity.

They will -enjoy the kingdom for long, without any obstruction and then achieve moksa. Thereafter they would achieve the blessful supreme position.

Such of the blissful monarchs had arrived here to attend my crowning ceremony, will also achieving the heaven ultimately in due course of time.

Let you meet with welfare. Now I shall move to Mathura — the capital of Bhojaraja Ugrasena.

Vaisarhpayana said — О Janamejaya, thus speaking and getting leave of the present monarchs, Shri Krishna the gem of the race of Yadu, together with Kratha and Kausika — the rulers of Vidarbha, reached his chariot.

Finding the diparture of lord Krishna Bhishmaka — the royal Rishi was immensely delighted, but the faces of the other monarchs were faded out.

Then the king Bhishmaka fell at the feet of Shri Krishna who is eternal cause, form of the self born, adored by the gods as well as the asuras, having thousands of feet, eyes, arms, and the heads, besides being resplendent with thousand of crowns, who wears the divine garland and divine fragrance and divine pastes are applied, (over his body) whose all the limbs are adorned with the divine ornaments, who carries several divine weapons, to whom the sun, the moon and the fire serve as the eyes and who has red lotus like eyes, with folded hands. Thus offering his salutation by speech, mind and body, he offered prayer to him.

Bhismaka said — О god of gods, salutation to you. You are beyond beginning or end, salutation to you. О Narayana, you are splendour of all. I offer my salutation to eternal god of gods.

You are Brahma, universal form, you are Mahadeva or immobile being, you are Padmanabha, bearing the matted locks of hair over the head (Siva) carrier of danda, Vidhata, having tawny colour, having the glory of a swan, the form of swan, and the form of cakra, salutation to you.

You are the lord of Vaikuntha, without birth, besides being the supreme soul. Salutation to you. You have the noble feelings and otherwise as well, you are a Purana Purusa, salutation to you.

You are Purusottama - well - versed in yoga and absolute great soul. Salutation to you. О best of the gods, I happen to be your devotee. You bless me always with boons. О master, you are the master of all the lokas, besides being the protector. You are selfconscious, Visnu for the learned people. You are omnipresent.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the king Bhismaka in presence of all the rulers, offered a huge quantity of gold to Shri Krishna, besides valuable garlands of gems, beads and the lapis lazuli. Thereafter, he also offered his salutation to Garuda — the son of Vinata and the king of birds offering briefly a prayer to Garuda as well.

Bhismaka said — The bird who has the speed of the wind, who can take to any form at will, having the divine form, being the son of Kasyapa, I offer my salutation to Garuda, the son of Vinata salutation to him.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus offering prayer to Garuda in brief, having been honoured with the offering of the best of ornaments, they sent off Shri Krishna. At the departure of Upendra — the younger brother of Indra, several of the monarchs followed him.

The valorous Krishna accepting the felicitation from the monarchs, illuminating the directions, making Garuda - the son of Vinata to lead having the gentle form, proceeded on to Mathura.

He departed with the sounding of kettledrums, patahas, and the large drums, the trumpeting of elephants, neighing of horses, roaring of the warriors besides the rumbling sound of the chariot wheels, combined with the sound of other musical instruments, tumutous noise was created which resembled the thundering of huge clouds.

After the immensely valorous Krishna’s departures, the gods, carried the excellent lion throne, to the heaven with them.

All the monarchs having been surrounded with the four fold army, followed, Krishna for a kosa and after getting permission from him, they returned. Thereafter all of them went to Svayambara.

Here ends chapter — 51, of Visnu Parva of the Harivariisa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahdbharata, relating to the return of Shri Krishna to Mathura. (Vrs. 1-72, P.T. = 5866)
