Shri Krishna’s visit to Kundanpr to joinac tshe Svayambara of Rukmini

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, in the meantime, the people who carried information about the happenings in the world, arrived in Mathura and assembled in the abode of Shri Krishna which was like that of lokapalas.

They wanted to convey the news about the destructive war. On their arrival, with the mutual indications, all the best Yadavas, assembled in the house of Shri Krishna.

When ail the Yadava chiefs arrived in assembly, those messages, about the cause of the destruction of the rulers were conveyed thus.

They said, “O Jamardana, an assembly of the rulers of the earth desired for the marriage is going to be held shortly.

О lotus eyed one, receiving the invitation from the king Rukami of Bhojpur, a gathering of rulers are moving towards Kundanpur, desirous of getting married.

О Janamejaya, this is being heard openly from the months of these people that the Svayambara of the elder sister of Rukmi, known by the name of Rukmini is going to be held there. Therefore all the rulers are arriving there with their armies.

O prince of the race of Yadus, on the third day from now, the Svaymbara of Rukmini — who is the most beautiful girl in the three worlds and adorned will all the ornaments shall be held.

Hundreds of rulers would be found there with their armies, chariots, horses, elephants and shall camp there travelling all the way.

The rulers who are proud of their strength, walk like the intoxicated elephants, are always interested in waging wars, are extremely jealous of one another. Such rulers, in order to be victorious immediately, uniting themselves, with the desire to achieve Rukmini, are camping there. О son of Yadu race, are we like the segergated kols and Bhils, to sit hare with out any enthusiasm sitting here uselessly? We shall also arrive there with enthusiasm.”

On hearing this news Shri Krishna felt as if someone had pierced a thorn in his heart. Then Govinda — the excellent Yadava, moved out of Mathura, with the army of Yadavas.

All the Yadavas having enormous strength, getting desirous of waging the war, started a journey. At that point of time, they appeared like the arrogant gods.

Marching along, the obedient army, Shri Krishna started for journey. He is the favourite of lord Siva. He held a cakra in his one hand and the gada in the other, looking graceful.

Other people of the Yadava race also followed Shri Krishna seated over the chariotss, in which small bells had been hung and were issing ringing sound.

At that point of time Shri Krishna having a firm view, spoke to the king Ugrasen, “O sinless monarch, you better stay here with my brother Balarama.

О Valorous one, the Ksatriyas usually are the past masters in deceitful ways. Their views are usually centred round the polity. In my absence, finding the city empty, they could launch an attack on the city.

Becoming apprehensive of us, all of them have joined Jarasandha - like the gods in the heaven, they live comfortable under the rule of Jarasandha.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening to the talk of Shri Krishna, the glorious, Bhojaraja Ugrasena, with his voice choked with emotions and affections, spoke the nectar like sweet words.

“O Krishna, О Krishna О valorous one, you enhance the comfort of the Yadavas. О destroyer of the enemies, now you listen to whatever is being spoken by me.

All of us cannot live in this country with comfort, with out you, as the women cannot live with comfort without their husbands.

O son, you respect others, with your presence, we have a protector. Taking refuge under your arms, what to speak of the rulers, we are not afraid of gods or even Indra.

О excellent Yadava, О best of Yadavas, wherever you go for victory, let us also accompany you.”

On hearing the words of Ugrasena, Shri Krishna, the son of Devaki, said smilingly, “I shall do according to your wishes. There is no doubt about it.

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, thus speaking, Shri Krishna at once moved on with his chariot and by the evening he reached the abode of Bhishmaka, the monarch.

All the rulers had arrived there. The town of Kundinpur had been surrounded with the camps of the rulers. The stage of the theatre was quite vast.. Observing all these, Shri Krishna resorted to his royal nature.

In order to frighten the rulers, and in order to display his own influence he invoked his earlier vehicle Garuda — the son of Vinata, mentally.

By his mere thinking about Garuda — the son of Vinata, secretly arrived before Shri Krishna, taking to a pleasent form.

The moving of his wings could confuse even the wind. With the wind produced with the moving of his wings, all the people present there starte shaking and fell down head on.

Having been infusred with the speed of Garuda, all the men fallen on earth were floundering like the serpents. Finding the people having fallen on the ground, Shri Krishna thought that Garuda, the best of the birds had arrived.

He, after sometime found that Garuda had arrived. He was decorated with the garland of divine flowers and the divine sandal paste. He was shaking even the earth, with the moving of his wings.

Some divine weapons had been placed over the back of Garuda, which appeared like licking his back. Lowering his head, Garuda, was realising that he had been receiving the blessings of lord Visnu.

Garuda was carrying a huge white serpents in his claws, while flying. Because of his possessing the golden wings, he resembled a mountain with a number of metals.

Overseeing the arrival of his banner, his courtier and the patient companion of evil times, lord Madhusudana was immensely delighted. He stoot before the lord like another god. Having thus appeared before him, Shri Krishna spoke to Garuda, with his authoritative tone.

Shri Krishna said: О Garuda — the best among all the birds who fly in the sky, you are welcome here. You are welcome being the destroyer of the enemy army, beloved of Kesava and son of Vinata.

O Garuda the best of the birds, whom the wings serve as the chariot, you better go to abode of the king Kausika (the father of Bhismaka — king of Vidarbha and the grand father of Rukmi.) We shall reach there today itself and wait for the performance of the Svayambara.

Hundreds of rulers, having travelled by elephants, horses and chariots have collected there. We shall meet them all.”

Thus speaking to Garuda — the valorous one and the son of Vinata, Shri Krishna together with your other Yadavas, reached Kundinpur — the capital city of Kausika.

Then Krishna, the son of Devaki, reaching the town of Vidarbha, met all delightfully. All the people were happy. All the valorous Rajpiits, carrying arms, started making arrangements for their stay there.

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, at the same time, the king Kausika, who was well-versed in polity, delightfully came to meet Shri Krishna himself in order to welcome him. He offered him, arghya, water for sipping and making a request appropriately he took him to his own city.

He had already built a divine place for the stay of Shri Krishna. As lord Siva lives over Kailasa, similarly Shri Krishna entered the palace with his army.

Shri Krishna, the younger brother of Indra, started living comfortably with his army, in the palace so provided by Kausika, where he was adored with enough of diamonds and gems and was provided excellent food and eatables etc.

Here ends chapter — 47, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to Shri Krishna’s visit to kundanpur to join the svayambara of Rukkmim. (Vrs. 1-46, P.T. = 5585)
