Marriage of Shubhangi — the daughter of Rukmi, with Pradyumna and Aniruddha’s marriage with Rukmavati - the grand daughter of Rukmi

Vaishampayana said - О Janamejaya, after a long time, Rukmi — who was valorous and subjugated his enemies organised a svayambara for the marriage of his daughter.

At the invitation of Rukmi, several valorous rulers from far and wide, from all the directions, besides the princes arrived there.

Pradyumna together with several other princes also arrived there. The daughter of Rukmi was desirous of Pradyumna, while Pradyumna was also desirous of the lotus eyed daughter of Rukmi.

Subhangi was the name of the princess of Vidarbh who possessed enormous grace and lustre for which she was quite famous in the world.

When all the glorious rulers took their seats in the place of Svayambara, the Vidarbha princess arrived and selected Pradyumna — the destroyer of the enemies as her husband.

Pradyumna was well — versed in the use of all the weapons. His body was well built like the lion. He was of youthful age. There was none else who could be compared with the son of Krishna in beauty.

The prince also was of youthful age, beautiful and possessed the best qualities and virtues. As Narayanl Indrasena loved her husband — the sage, similarly Subhangi was in love with Pradyumna.

At the concluding of the Svayambara, all the monarchs returned to their respective countries, while Pradyamna, together with princess of Vidarbha returned to Dvaraka.

The valorous Pradyumna enjoyed all the pleasures with the princess as the king Nala enjoyed with Damayantl. He produced a son from the womb of the princess of Vidarbha a son who was illustrious like the divine princes.

He was known as Aniruddha, who was known as a unique warrior in the world because of the strength of his arms. He was well — versed in polity as well as archery.

On reaching the youthful age, Aniruddha, then Rukmini, asked the hand of the grand daughter of Rukmi, for marriage with Aniruddha, who was of fair complexion like the gold and was known by the name of Rukmavatl.

О Janamejaya, the king Rukmi was attracted by the virtues of Aniruddha desired to marry his grand daughter with him. Therefore, at the instance of Rukmini, in order to make him agree, and for the delight of Pradyamna, the glorious Rukmi, inspite of his having conflict with Shri Krishna, discarding his enmity delightfully said, I am prepared give my grand daughter in marriage with Aniruddha.

Thereafter lord Krishna accompanied with Rukmini, Pradyumna and other sons, brother Balarama, and other warriors of Vrsni race, besides the army, went to the country of Vidarbha.

During the marriage, the kiths and kins of Rukmi, and other close relatives, had arrived there at the invitation of Rukmi.

О great king the marriage ceremony of Aniruddha was performed at the best of time date and the constellation.

When Aniruddha accepted the hand of the princess of Vidarbha in marriage, then all the people of Vidarbha and the Yadavas were immensely delighted.

The Yadavas, who were adored by the people of Vidarbha felt delightful like the gods. At the same time, large hearted Venudari — the ruler of Asmaka country, besides Aksa, Canura, Amsuman the son of Kratha, Jyotsena the ruler of Kalinga country, the king Pandya, and the ruler of Rishika country, who were all prosperous, rulers of the southern region, met Rukmi in seclusion and said.

“You are well versed in gambling. We are also desirous of gambling. On the otherhand, Balarama, who is not so good in gambling, but is quite fond of it.

Therefore, we desire that putting you in the foremost position Balarama should be won in the game of gambling.” These words of the rulers, appealed Rukmi.

Thereafter all the monarchs entered the beautiful gambling chamber, which had the pillars of gold and the court of which was decorated with flowers. The fragrant water of sandal paste was sprinkled in that chamber.

All the rulers having been decorated with the flower garlands, seated themselves over the lion thrones made of gold. All of them desired to win Balabhadra.

Thereafter the kings who were well versed in gambling invited Balabhadra for a game. He said “all right”, Thereafter he said, let us play the gambling together. You put something at stake.

The rulers from south wented to win the game deceitfully, brought there thousands of gems, beads, diamonds as well as gold.

Then the game of gambling started, which was the destroyer of the mental love and the couse of quarrel, besides the killer of the evil minded people.

Baladeva, while gambling put ten thousand gold coins at stake while gambling with Rukmi.

The valorous tried his best to win, but Rukmi was the stake. Thereafter, he again won an equivalent amount from Baladeva.

When Rukmi continued to win, then Balarama put a crore of gold coins at stake.

Rukmi was extremely deceitful and wicked. Having been filled with delight he uttered, “I have won it. ’’All the rulers then praised Rukmi. Then he deforming Balarama, said.

“Baladeva is short of knowledge and weak. He thinks himself to be invincible but he has been defeated in today’s game of gamble I have won enormous gold from him.”

Listening to the words of Rukmi, the king of Kalinga was delightful and started laughing aloud displaying teeth. Then Balarama was enraged.

When Balarama heard the speech of Rukmi, which he had made at his defeat, then Rukmi — the son of Bhishmaka started teasing him with his sharp tongue. Then Balarama, the son of Rohini, was enraged with the insult. Though he was well — versed in dharma and had controlled his anger, still his mind was immensely hurt.

Still he, exercising patience controlled his mind and said, “O lord of Vidarbha, is my final bet for ten thousand crores of gold coins. You get them and in the excessive time and country you throw the black die.” Thus speaking, Balarama, the son of Rohini, again challenged him for the game.

In reply to this Rukmi said nothing except, “All right”. Thereafter he threw the die.

At that point of time the die with four numerical fell, as a result of which Baladeva had defeated Rukmi, according to the usual practice. But Rukmi still claimed that Baladeva had not won.

Balarama, then still kept patience and spoke nothing. Then Rukmi uttered smilingly, “this game too has been won by me.

О Naresvara, on hearing the deceitful words of Rukmi, Baladeva was again enraged immensely, but still he did not reply him in anyway.

Then there was a divine voice from the sky, which enraged Baladeva immensely.

“Shri Baladeva is speaking the truth. Thus Rukmi has been defeated according to dharma. Though he had spoken nothing at the time of throwing the die, still the die thrown by him, his complicity in the same becomes too apprarent. He had mentally accepted that stake, which should be understood.”

The words spoken from the sky in a beautiful manner, the valorous Samkarsana got up, and he, raised the huge astapada of gold, killed Rukmi, who fell on the ground.

Balarama, getting enraged with the quarrel, raised Rukmi, who spoke ugly word for him, throw him on the ground and killed him with the use of astapada.

Getting immensely enraged, he left the palce and holding the ruler of Kalinga, broke all his teeth and started roaring like a lion on anger.

Then by raising the sword held in his hand, he frightened all the rulers. Then Balarama, carrying the pillars of the gambling chamber in hand, was filled with rage and he moved forward.

When Balarama dragged the pillars out of the gamblig chamber, he frightened all the Kaisekas.

Thus killing Rukmi, who was past master in deceitful ways, Balarama, the foremost of the Yadovas, frightened all the enemies in the same way, as the lion frightened the small animals.

Thereafter, Balarama who had been surrounded by his own kiths and kins, returned to his camp and he himself disclosed everything whatever had happened in the game of gambling.

At that point of time, Shri Krishna spoke nothing to Balarama. He somehow controlling himself started painfully shedding tears.

Lord Krishna did not kill Rukmi earlier, because of his love for Rukmini. Then Rukmi who was valorous like Indra, the holder of vajra was killed at the hand of Balarama with the astapada.

Rukmi — the valorous son of Bhishmaka possessed enormous strength he had received taining in archery from Druma and Parasurama, by which he became immensely powerful. Rukmi was quite learned, well versed in war, and was the regular performer of yajnas. At his death, Shri Krishna and all the people of Andhaka Vamsa felt sad.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, (at the death of her brother) the virtuous Rukmini, started lamenting pathitically, who was consoled by Shri Krishna.

О best of Bharatas, I have thus narrated to you appropriately about the killing of Rukmi, besides making clear as to how did he develop enmity with the people of Vrsni dynasty.

О great monarch, the people of Vrsni race, collecting all types of riches from there, taking refuge with Shri Krishna returned to Dvaraka.

Here ends chapter — 61, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the marriage of Subhangi, the daughter of Rukmi with Pradyumna, and Aniruddha’s marriage with Rukmati — the grand daughter of Rukmi. (vrs. 1-55, P.T. = 6495)
