Building of Dvarkapuri and marriage of Balarama with Revati

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, then at the time of sunrise in the morning, after performing the daily recitation and meditation, he seated himself in the forest.

Thereafter in order to select a suitable place for a fort, he started wandering in the region. At that point of time the seniors of the race of Yadus, also arrived there.

Shri Krishna made the Brahmanas to recite svastivachana (welfare mantras) started the work of the construction of a fort.

Thereafter the best of oraters Shri Krishna, having lotus like eyes, killer of KesI, as the enemies of Vrtrasura talk to Indra, similarly he also talked to the Yadavas.

O Yadavas, I have completed the construction work at this land like the abode of gods. All of you should observe it. I have decided about its name as well, by which it will be well known (in the world).

The city which will be built by me on the earth, will be known by the name of Dvarkavati and shall be charming like Amaravati — the capital city of Indra.

I shall built the symbols, the temples, the crossings and the roads and the inner apartements, which would be comparable with those of the city of Amaravati.

As the gods enjoy all the comforts in the heaven, similarly Ugrasena and all of you, getting care free, causing pain to your enemies, shall live in this city with pleasure.

The materials for laying down the horses should be brought. The positions of four way and three way crossings should be thoughtover. Measurements should be taken for the building of the roads. The land for laying the roads leading to the rayal palaces should be measured.

The best of masons well versed in the construction of houses should be sent here. The labour should be engaged for performing the manual work with the masons and other artisans.”

At these words spoken by lord Shri Krishna, all the Yadavas, started collecting materials for the construction of the houses. All of them collected the required materials for the (building of the houses as well as the for) the laying of foundation stones.

O great king, then the Yadavas, on an auspicious day, adoring the Brahmanas, holding the measuring tape, started measuring the land.

They also adored the god of architect appropriately. Thereafter lord Krishna said to the sthapatis (architects).

О artisans, all of you, should build a beautiful temple for adoration for the Yadavas, in which the image of our family deity should be appropriately consecrated. There should be a separate roads and crossings leading to the temple.

Then all the sthapatis (architects) replied to Shri Krishna, “very well” and then started building of the fort, removing the shrubs, built several forts and temples in a proper manner. The images of Brahma and other deities were established therein.

Four separate gates were built for the four gods viz: water, fire, Indra besides mortar and pestle.

The artisans, carved images of Suddhaksa, Indra, Bhallat (an ancient god who was worshipped at the time of construction of houses.), Puspadanta, (Elephant of north-west direction) and suitable shrines were built for them. When all the intelligent Yadavas engaged themselves in the construction of the houses, then lord Krishna felt concerned about the speedy completion of the construction work.

As a move of destiny, spotless wisdom emerged in him, for the speedy completion of the construction of the city, which was beneficial and good for the upliftment of Yadavas.

He thought that “Visvakarma the divine architect of the gods, would be most suitable for the job. Let him build the city according to his wisdom.”

Thus thinking in his mind, lord Krishna, adressed the gods in a secluded place, for getting Visvakarma on the job.

At the same time the learned Silpacarya Visvakarma appeared before Shri Krishna.

Visvakarma said — (j Visnudeva — the performer of the best of the Vratas, Indra has deputed me to meet you. I am now present here to serve you. You tell me what should I do for you?

О lord, for me as the self born Brahma and lord Siva are adorable, similarly you also are respectable for me. As per my belief, there is no difference among the three of you.

О valorous one, your speech bestows the knowledge of all the three worlds. You kindly make use of the same for me. I am an expert in the Silpasastra and am standing before you. You tell me, what should I do for you?

Listening to the words of Visvakarma, Shri Krishna — the best of the Yadavas and the destroyer of Kathsa, spoke to him pleasently.

О best of gods, once there had been a secret meeting of the gods in which all of us were present including yourself. Therefore there is a deep purpose of the gods, which had also been heard by you. Therefore a beautiful house has to be built for my stay here.

О god — performer of the best of Vratas, displaying your efficiency in the field of' architecture, you have to build up a town here with the houses. This city should reflect my glory from all the sides.

О learned one, as Amaravati is the best in the heaven, similar type of construction has to be made by you. You are fully compitent to do this work.

This place of mine has to be built by you similar to the one as Vaikuntha, as a result of which, all the people of this place, should be able to witness my glory and also of the race of Yadus.”

At these words of Shri Krishna, the most intelligent Visvakarma, suddenly spoke to Shri Krishna who is the destroyer of the enemies of gods.

«O lord, I shall do whatever is desired of me. But the land available with us would not be enough to accommodate such a large crowd of people.

In case you so desire, it could be expanded. I desire it to be beautifully developed. For this purpose all the four oceans shall have to consult one another in human form. In case the oceans who are the lords of water could release some land, then the city shall be quite vast and possess all the auspicious symptoms.”

Listening to the words of Visvakarma, Shri Krishna, the best of the orators, who had already thought of getting some land from the ocean said to the ocean - who is the lord of rivers.

О ocean, in case you have some respect for me in your mind, then you squeeze your water upto twelve kosas.

With the release of the land by you, the city which is being built for me would be quite vast, where my entire army would be accommodated.”

On hearing the words of Shri Krishna, at that moment, the lord of small and big rivers, released the required land with the force of the wind, squeezing the water from the same.

At the sight of the vast area of land, Visvakarma was immensely pleased. Thus the ocean honoured the words of Shri Krishna at the time.

Thereafter, Visvakarma spoke to Shri Krishna belonging to the race of Raghu, “O Govind, now all of you should be prepared to live in this city from today itself.

O lord, I have mentally built this city, which will shortly appear in the form of houses arranged in lines. It shall be a beautiful and quite pleasent city. Its doors will be quite beautiful and beautiful arches shall be provided on all the sides. The mounds, boundary walls, high buildings will decorate the city like the armlets. The city will be considered as the top of all the cities on earth.

In the portion of the city adored by the gods a vast inner apartment has been built by Visvakarma for the use of Shri Krishna, in which separate rooms have been made for bathing etc.

In this way the excellent Visvakarma mentally built up the Vaisnava city of Visvakarma, known as Dvaravatl.

Its doors/gates were made according to the provisions of the Silpasastras. The excellent boundary walls added to its grandeur. The city was secure by the moats and the mounds. It had many high buildings, boundary walls besides the arches and toranas, which were arranged appropriately.

The beautiful men and women started living there. The businessmen and the traders added to its glory. The shops were filled with several types of commodities. It appeared the city had descended from the sky.

The spotless clean water was filled in the places meant for supply of water to the travellers, as well as the step — walls, several types of orchards decorated it from all the sides and as such, it appeared like a broadeyed damsel clad in clothes.

Its crossings were quite vast. High palaces could be seen everywhere like clouds. There were a thousand crores of streets. The shining royal roads added to its grandeur.

As the city of Indra, adds to the grandeur of the heaven, similarly the city of Dvaraka added to be beauty of the ocean. It was the only city on earth, which was studded with gems.

The city of Dvaraka was auspicious for the gods even. It could create anguish in the minds of the surrounding kings. It almost touched the sky with it high buildings.

The city of Dvarka was established over the earth with several kingdoms and the noise of the people there, echoed in the sky. The breeze of the place was quite cool because of the high waves of the ocean.

The water logged shores of the ocean, had enough of orchards filled with trees, the beauty of which attracted the people of Dvarka and looked fine like the sky filled with stars and constellations.

The city was surrounded with the boundary walls shining like the sun rays, which looked graceful with deep sounds emerging from the high buildings, made in gold and the doors looking white like the clouds.

At places, the shades of the high buildings, fell on the roads. In such a type of the city of Dvarka all the Yadavas started living there. The city had enough of desirable persons. As the moon shines in the sky, similarly Shri Krishna, added to the grace of the city.

After building the city of Dvaraka like the city of Amaravati, the lord Visvakarma, getting honoured from Shri Krishna, returned to the heaven.

Thereafter the selfconscious lord Krishna thought in his mind, in case I could satisfy the people with the best of riches, then it would have been quite good.

Thereafter, Shri Krishna invoked Samkhi who always remained in contanct with Kubera the lord of all the treasures in his palace.

Realising that he had been invoked by Shri Krishna, Samkha — the lord of all the treasures, himself reached the city of Dvaraka.

The Samkha then humbly, with with folded hands, spoke to Shri Krishna, offering his salutation to him.

“O lord, I happen to be the treasurer of the gods. О valorous, Yadunandana, what shall have I to do? You get me your command, whatever has to be done by me.”

The Shri Krishna said to the excellent treasurer, “Whosoever is found poor or having little of riches, should be bestowed with enough of riches.

I do not intend to see any one who is poor in this city or the one who has to keep fast for non — availability of food, or the one who is weak or dirty and begs alms from some one spreading his palm.”

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, accepting the command of lord Krishna, Samkha, the lord of treasures, commanded all the treasures, “You go to Dvaraka and shower the rain of riches in each and every house.” All the treasures acted accordingly.

In this way in earlier times no poor or unfortunate person was left in the city of Dvaraka. No weak or dirty person was found there.

Thereafter, Shri Krishna, who always did good to others, invoked the wind god while remaining in Dvaraka itself.

Then the wind god, who had been the form of life for all the bhutas, met Sr! Krishna in a lonely place, who had in his mind, the secret task of the gods to be established.

Vayudeva said to Shri Krishna, «O lord, I can reach eveiywhere with great speed. You tell me the service that can be rendered by me to you. О sinless one, as I happen to be the messenger, of the gods, I can also serve you similarly.

Then the eternal Shri Krishna, finding mat the wind god had arrived there before him in person, then he spoke to him secretly.

O Maruta, you go, respecting the gods as well Indra, and getting their permission, you bring here the Sudharma — Sabha (to be lodged here).

Let the thousands of noble Yadavas, who are quite valorous, be seated in that assembly hall, which would be everlasting and imperishable.

The assembly hall which is beyond destruction, is quite pleasent, could be able to move anywhere at will, like the wind as per the desire of the Yadayas and accommodate them inside it, in the same way as it accommodates all the gods in itself.”

Shri Krishna who could perform great deeds, all of a sudden, (when so spoken to the wind god), he went to the heaven with great speed, carrying the message of Shri Krishna.

He conveyed the message of Shri Krishna, quite respectfully to the gods and with their permission, he brought the Sudharma- Subha over the earth.

The wind god, suddenly disappeared, after handing over the Sudharma -Sabha to Shri Krishna, who performs the astonishing feats all of a sudden.

Shri Krishna, established the Sudharma - Sabha in the centre of Dvaraka. Similarly it served the assembly hall for the Yadavas on earth.

In this way, the eternal lord Hari, decorated the city of Dvaraka with the divine pleasure, and using the gems and diamonds which emerged from the ocean, like a young damsel.

He had prescribed the limits of dharma for all. He also established limitations for the businessmen and traders, the people of the city, the army commanders, and the rulers.

He established Ugrasena the king of Mathura. He established Sandipani — a learned Brahmana from Kesi as the family priest. He appointed Anadhrsti as the chief commanders, and vikadru as the Prime minister.

The learned Shri Krishna appointed the ten senior Yadavas as ministers for rendering proper advice.

Daruka — the best of the charioteers was appointed by Shri Krishna as his charioteer. Satyaki — the best of the warriors as the chief of the army.

Shri Krishna, having unblemished glory, thus establishing the rule of law, started living in Dvaraka with delight.

Then Baldeva, with the permission of Shri Krishna, married the noble daughter Revati of the king Revata as his wife.

Here ends chapter — 58, of Harivamsa Parva of Harivamsa Purana a khilabhaga of Mahabharata, relating to the building of Dvaraka and marriage of Balarama and Revati. (Vrs. 1-84, P.T. = 6310)
