Conflict between Rukmini and Satyatbhama





Janamejaya said — О great sage, the childhood sports of Shri Krishna perfomed by him at Mathura quite intereseting hearing which, I do not feel satisfied.

After living in Dvaraka, getting married the performance of Shri Krishna, is influenced with the six gunas performed his functions with his spouse. You better enlighten me about them — because all his sports are well known to you.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya - the son of Bharata’s race, you listen the the events relating to Shri Krishna after his marriage. His entire perfomance suits him alone.

О Naresvara, after his marriage, Shri, Krishna — the illustrious one went to. Raivataka mountain with Rukmini.

It was the time for the conclusion of the vrata of Rukmini had himself gone there in order to feed the Brahmanas.

With the permission of divine saint Narada, at the time of taking food all the princes of Yadu race, sons and brothers were also present, there at the instance of Vasudeva.

О king, the immensely intelligent Shri Krishna, the form of Visnu, was accompanied with sixteen thousand queens as well, who participated in the festivities.

О son of the race of Kuru, thereafter, lord Krishna, distributed the desired things to auspicious Brahmanas, who were well - versed in the scriptures, perfoming of welfare ceremonies, yoni-vidya and yajnas.

Satisfying the Brahmanas with the presenting of the desired articles, Lord Krishna, who is dear to the noble people, to whom the devotees are quite dear, also satisfied his own kiths and kins.

At the conclusion of the fast, Shri Krishna particularly honoured Rukmini, the daughter of the king Bhishmaka.

The immensely illustrious Shri Krishna, then seated there with Rukmini and other spouses, Narada approched him at the same time.

The form of boundless and the younger brother of Indra, adored Narada appropriately as prescribed in the scriptures.

О son of Bharata’s race, after having been adored by lord Vasudeva, the sage Narada who is respected by all the people, handed over a flower of Parijata tree to Shri Krishna.

O best of rulers, after receiving the Parijata flower from Narada, he handed it over to Rukmini in her hand, because she was seated next to him.

Receiving the flower, the chaste Rukmini who followed the indications of Shri Krishna studded it in her hair.

Then Rukmini in whom, the entire beauty of the world had been enshrived, and was the form of Laksmi — attracting the mind, looked doubly beautiful with the grace of that flower.

At that point of time, Narada — the divine sage spoke to her, “O Goddess, О chaste one, this flower is totally meant for you alone.

О goddess, the performer of vrata, by your touch this flower has fully blossomed. By adorning yourself with the flower, you have become more respectable as per my view.

О beloved of the husband, full of all the noble virtues, О beautiful one, this flower remains fresth for one year and does not fade out. You are well — versed in self control and you are respected because of your own virtues, best of the speakers, О Rukmini this flowers issued the desired fragrance for a year.

О goddess, this flower provides the warmth and the coolness which is actually required (in a season). Besides, it fullfils all the desires of the mind, by itself.

О selector of your own husband, in case this flower is made use of, then it enhances the virtues and issues the fragrance, which pleases the mind.

О goddess, whatever flowers would be desired by you this flower of Parijata the king of trees, would produce before you.

О auspicious one, having faith in dharma, О goddess, this flower bestows fortunes and the son. In case it is worn regularly, it does not allow the mind to move the evil path.

In whatever, colour you would like to see this flower, it would appear in the same colour. It can also increase or decrease in size at your own will. It will also increase or decrease in weight besides being hard as well as soft.

О lotus eye one, this flower would remove the evil smell and increase fragrance. It serves as a lamp during the night.

With the simple wish it would produce the garlands of flowers of the divine trees, flowers ever lasting costumes, besides the mandapas of beautiful flowers.

While making use of the flower, like the gods, you would never feel hungry or thirsty, remorseful, or achieve old age. All these things shall remain as per your wishes.

Not only that, it would, with the mere thinking, also provide the delight of the beautiful musical instruments, based on the scriptures.

O goddess, at the end of the year, this flower shall automatically disappear from you and shall join Parejata — the best of the trees.

О illustrious one, let you meet with welfare, Brahma, the creator after world, had created the competence of the Parijata.

О goddess, illuminating with the excellent lustre, О Devesvarl, Uma, the beloved of Siva and daughter of Himalaya, always wears these flowers.

Aditi — the mother of Indra, SacI the wife of Indra, Savitri — the mother of gods, Laksmi, possessing all the virtues, besides all the other spouses of gods, besides the gods and Vasus, wear this flower. For them also, the life of this flower, when worn, lasts for an year only. There is no doubt about it.

O delight of Bhojavamsa, I have come to realise today, that among the sixteen thousand women, you are the dearest of all to Shri Krishna.

О beloved of lord Shri Krishna, О virtuous damsel, you have today, humiliated all your co-wives.

Your essential fortunes, and glory had come to light, because lord Madhusudana, handed over the Mandara flower in your hand alone.

Today Satyabhama, the daughter of Satrajit, who is quite a beautiful one, who always considered herself to be quite virtuous of all, shall realise, as to who is virtuous in reality.

Jamavati the mother of Samba, besides Gandhari and other, wives of Shri Krishna, would remove the doubt about their being so fortunate.

О Goddess, today, the chariot of your fortunes, getting victorious has came out, which is invincible from the thousands of mental chariots.

О damsel with all the beautiful limbs, О daughter of king of Bhoja dynasty, I have fully realised today that you happen to be the second soul of Shri Krishna.

О beloved of Hari, lord Shri Krishna, has given over the Parijata flower — which is the form of all the gems of the three worlds, you have therefore achieved something which is dearer than the life.

О Naresvara, the slave girls who had been sent by Satyabhama, were standing there, who heard all the words spoken by the sage Narada to Rukmini.

О lord of the people, the slave girls of other wives of Shri Krishna were also standing there. Looking at them Narada further exaggerated (the praise of Rukmini).

On hearing the talk of Narada, all the slave girls, because of the nature of the women, (went to their respective queens and revealed the words of Narada to their respective mistresses).

The news was carried on to the other queens through the whisper compaign. The wives (of Shri Krishna) then collected in groups and started discussing about the heightened fortunates of Rukmini, as if they had been discussing about a secret of the family.

Blossoming with delight, the wives of Damodara, collected and conversed, “Rukmini is adorable of all of us. She is the mother of the eldest son, besides herself being the senior most.

But Satyabhama the beloved of Shri Krishna, could not tolerate, the enhanced fortune of her со-wife.

She was quite youthful and beautiful and was proud of her fortunes as well. Therefore the proud goddess Satyabhama was over powered with jealousy, on hearing the rise of her co-wife.

Then Satyabbhama with an auspicious smile over her face removed her saree of the safforon colour, with enraged mind, clad herself in white garments. At that point of time, she looked like the fire which gets inflamed with the pouring of the dry wood in it.

The fire of jealousy kept on increasing in her mind as a result she was devoid of her grace, because of the increase in her jealousy. As a star is covered with the clouds, similarly Satyabhama also, entered the chamber of anger.

The goddess, Satyabhama, bound a white cloth over her head which was bright like the moon. She also applied the red sandal paste over her face.

Keeping in mind all such things, she sat over a big pillow and shook her head. She removed all the ornaments and also made the tuft of her hair.

The slave girls said to her. “You have been enraged without any reason.” Thus speaking the slave girls tired to drag her out of the chamber of anger. At that point of time Satyabhama, inspite of her having been born in high race, was breathing heavily and she made powder of nails of her lotus like hands.

Here ends chapter — 65, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mdhabharata, relating to the conflict between Rukmini and Satyabhama. (Vrs. i-55, P.T. = 6769)
