Departure of Yadavas to Dvarka at the command of Shri Krishna

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, once, the lotus eyed lord Krishna while seated in the assembly of Yadavas, spoke the beneficial words.

This city of Mathura, which has knitted the country like a rosary is the land of Yadavas. We have been born and brought up here in Braj of this country.

Presently all ouer miseries are over. All the enemies have accepted defeat. We have developed enmity with monarchs and have been at war with Jarasandha.

We have enough of vehicles. The number of foot soldiers also is innumerable, our treasure has astonishing types of gems. The number of our friends also is quite large.

But the land of Mathura is too small and it gets an easy access into it. On the other hand, there has been an increase in our friends and the soldiers.

We have a crore of unmarried soldiers. Besides there are other contingents as well. Because of all these the place looks over crowded.

Therefore, О brave Yadavas, I do not like to stay here anymore. Therefore, I shall establish another city. I want to be excused for this stubbornness of mine.

In the assembly of the Yadavas, whatever are the feelings of my heart, have been expressed by me, they are meant for your betterment suiting to the time. You better tell me in case it appeals you.

All the Yadavas then spoke with delight, “O lord, you can do anything you deem fit for the betterment of Yadavass. You better act accordingly.

Then all the people of Vrsnivarhsa started consultations collectively, “Jarasandha has been declared as invincible for us. He is our enemy having a huge force.

The monarchs of our side have caused enormous harm and destruction of the enemy army. Still he has an enormous army, which cannot be destroyed in a hundred years. Therefore we think of an escape.”

In the mean time Kalayavana together with the king Jarasandha, has invaded Mathura with his vast army.

At that point of time it would be difficult for an army to contain the armies of Jarasandha and Kalayavana together. When the Yadavas learnt of the invasion of Kalayavana as well, then they thought it better to escape from Mathura.

The truthful Krishna again addressed the Yadavas, “Today is the auspicious day, when we should escape from this place with our armies.”

On hearing this all the Yadavas, at the command of Shri Krishna, aboundaned the city of Mathura and escaped. At that point of time the groups of Yadavas guarded by the soldiers, creating huge noise, appeared like the waves of the oceanic water.

Vasudeva and all other Yadavas, accompanied with their wives and the caprisoned elephants, horses, chariots, moved on from Mathura deserting the place. Beating the drums, they left the place with their relatives.

О best of Bharata’s race, the chariots decorated with gold, the intoxicated elephants and the horsed yoked in the chariots which galloped with the mere indications of the raising of the whips by the charioteers, added grace of the army. Dragging them all with them, all the Vrsni- VamsI people started moving towards the western direction.

Thereafter all the great warriors of Yaduvamsa together with Shri Krishna, moved on with their armies.

The lion like warriors of Yadu race then reached Sindhu country, which looked graceful with several types of creepers and the forests of coconuts. The cluster of rose — chestnut trees (Mesua roxburghii or ferrea) produced a charming look, and were spread every where, which added to the beauty of the place. The region was full of screwpine plants. At places the palm, Ratleria tincloria, Mimusops elengi (Bakula) and grape trees were also found, which made (the forests) of the land quite thick.

Such of the Yadavas who were liking comforts, started enjoying the heavenly comforts in some of the places, there.

Shri Krishna — the destroyer of the enemy warriors, who was in search of a place suitable from the architectural point of view for the building of a city, came across a vast region there.

The region had the soil of sand mixed with the copper powder. It was good for vehicles and had symbols which were beneficial for the building of a city. It appeared so pleasing as if Laksmi had made it her abode.

That region of the Sindhu kingdom, was served by the sea — breeze and the oceanic water. It had the suitable elements which could be useful in building of a city.

Close by, there was the well known mountains Raivataka, the peaks of which were as high as those of the Mandarachala mountain, besides being quite charming. The mountain looked splended from all the sides.

Ekalavya lived there. Besides Acarya Drona, also had lived there for a long time. Several people were visiting that place. The mountain was the store house of several types of gems.

Close to it was the sporting ground of the king Raivataka and was known as Dvaravatl and was squared like the chess board.

The place appealed to Shri Krishna, where he resolved to build a city for Yadavas.

When the redness of the sun was spread during the day, the best of Yadavas, then deputed the army guards and also organised contonments for the stay of the soldiers.

Lord Krishna well — versed in welfare, stayed in that region with Yadavas for building a city there.

Purusottama — the elder brother of God then decided to build the city with mental excercise. He also built the houses mentally and distributed them.

Thus the people of Yadu race, reaching Dvaraka, with all the kiths and kins, started living there comfortably as the gods live in the heaven.

Then Krishna the killer of Kesi, knowing about the arrival of Kalayavana, and frightened from the attack of both (Kalayavana and Jarasandha) went to the city of Dvarka.

Here ends chapter — 56, of Visnu Parva of the Harivariisa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the Departure of Yddavas to Dvarka at the command of Krishna. (Vrs. 1-35, P.T. = 6156)

Chapter 57

Killing of Kalayavana

Janamejaya said — I want to listen to the life story of Shri Krishna who was quite learned, best of the race of Yadus, son of Vasudeva, in detail.

Because of whom, Madhusudana fled from Mathura? It was the best place of Madhyadesa, the second abode of Laksmi, the horn of earth, having enough of water (resources), quite beautiful and was the best of the dwelling place, 0 best of Brahmanas, why did Krishna of the race of Darsaha, fled from the battle, without fighting? How did Kalayanava treat Shri Krishna.”

What did valorous, Mahayogi and a great ascitic lord Krishna do at Dvaraka, surrounded with the fort of water from all the sides.

What was the prowess of Kalayavana, who gave birth to the valorous person, whom thinking invincible lord Krishna left Mathura.

Vaishampayana said — The sage Gargya was the priest of Yadavas of the Andhaka, and Vrsni races. He observing Brahmacarya approprietely was engaged in meditation. He during those days did not have any company with the women.

He was spotless Brahmacan, a celibate, but his brother-in-law, called him a eunuch.

О king, the sage had been victorious over the invicible great soul. Having thus earning blemish in the city, he did not desire for a woman, but he started severe tapas in anger.

The sage Gargya, then performing tapas for unthinkable Mahadeva — the carrier of trident, for a period of twelve years, consuming only the iron powder.

Then lord Rudra bestowed him a boon of having an illustrious son, who had to be invincible from the warriors of the Andhaka and Vrsni dynasties.

At the same time the lord of Yavanas, heard about the story of the sage getting a son. He was childless and was desirous of getting a son.

The Yavana king brought the sage Gargya at his place and the Gopa women were made to surround him at a chamber.

In the same chamber, there was an apsara named Gopall, who lived there in the form of a cowherdess. It was she who held the child of Gargya in her womb.

Because of the influence of lord Siva, the sage Gargya, brought out a valorous son from the apsara who had taken to the form of a cowherds. He was known as Kalayavana.

The said infant was looked after and brought up in the inner appartments of the Yavana king. After the death of the Yavana king, Kalayavana was made the king.

The king Kalayavana getting desicrious of war, enquired from the excellent Brahmanas about the most valorous warriors and the places where they lived. At this the Devarsi Narada introduced him about the warriors of Andhaka and Vrsni races.

Learning about the boon granted to him by Siva, MadhusHdana Krishna, neglected about Kalayavana who was being brought in the Yavana country.

When Kalayavana — the ruler of Yavana country, became properous, then the other Mlechha rulers taking refuge with him, also followed him.

Sakas, Tusaras, Dardas, Srmgalas, Parados, khasas, Palkhavas, and hundreds of other Mlechha rulers of Himalaya joined him.

The plunderers like the innumerable locusts, who wore several types of costumes and carried difficult types of weapons, appeared awful. Having been surrounded by such types of rulers, Kalayavana, invaded Mathura.

Не had a vast army of elephants, horses, donkeys, camels, the number of which ran into, thousands, lakhs and crores, and shook the earth. The dust that rose with the marching of that army rose in the sky covering the sunshine. The refuse and urine of the soldiers created several new streams.

О monarch, with the dungs of the horses and camels, there appeared a river, which was known as Asvasakrt.

Hearing about the arrival of the vast army of Yavanas, Vasudeva, the leader of the people of Vrsni and Andhaka races, collected all the Yadavas and spoke to them.

“O brothers, an awful danger has arisen for the people of the Vrsni and Andhaka races, our enemy is invincible because of his birth from lord Siva — the carrier of a bow.

We have applied several means to appease him also, but he becoming intoxicated with his strength and arrogance, is only interested in waging a war.

Narada had spoken about our stay in Mathura upto this time alone. For such a powerful enemy the use of the words of assurance have been said take the best.

The king Jarasandha can never forgive we people. He is always inimical to us and the other rulers, who have been tortured by the rulers of Vrsni dynasty, while other rulers have been disassociated with us due to the death of Kariisa. All of them have joined the forces of Jarasandha. All of them taking refuge with Jarasandha now intend to harm us.

Those monarchs have killed numerous relatives of the people of Yadu race. We con not save all everyone, by living here. Taking these things into account, Krishna had resovled to escape from this place. He had sent a messenger to them.

At that point of time Shri Krishna, got a venomous serpent black like the coal taken out of the mine, put it into a pitcher covered its mouth and sent it through our messenger to him.

By sending a serpent to him Govinda had tried to frighten him. О best of Bharata’s race, the messenger showed the pitcher to Kalayavana, saying that Shri Krishna was as dangerous as the black cobra.

Kalayavana thought that the Yadavas had tried to frighten him. He in turn filled the pitcher with terrific insects and ants.

The innumerable insects and ants started biting the serpent from all the sides, as a result of which the serpent was killed at once.

Then the mouth of the pitcher was closed again and indicating his vast army, sent it to Shri Krishna.

Shri Krishna realising that his experiment has failed, at once left Mathura and proceeded to Dvarka.

О king, the glorious Vasudeva in order to end the enmity, built the city of Dvarka, assuring the people of Vrsni race, left Mathura.

The immensely valorous Madhusudana, a lion among the humans, arrived in Mathura on foot with his arms alone serving as weapons.

Observing him Kalayavana was filled with delight as well as anger at the same time and followed Shri Krishna. On the other hand, Shri Krishna also exposing himself he started running, dragging (or forcing Kalayavana) to follow him.

Kalayavana in order to capture Govinda followed him. But he could not capture Shri Krishna.

In earlier days during the war between the gods and the asuras, the glorious Mucukunda the son of Mdndhdtd, fought on the side of the gods and became victorious.

The gods asked him to seek for a boon. Thereafter he desired a long sleep as a boon. Having been tired with the waging of the war, he uttered these words.

О gods, who so ever shall wake me up, he should be burnt with my angry looks.” This is what he repeated again and again.

Then the gods with Indra said to him, “Be it so”. Thus getting permission from the gods, he reached the king of mountains.

Having been tired with the physical labour put in by him in the war, the king (Mucukunda) entered a cave and went to sleep in it till such time he could not have a meeting with Shri Krishna.

Because of the glory of the monarch Mucukunda and also because of the boon of the gods, the entire episode had been narrated by Narada to Shri Krishna, the son of Vasudeva.

Like a humble person, ShriKrishna having been followed by a rulers of the Mlechha race, entered the cave of Mucukunda.

After his entry into the cave, Shri Krishna, stood concealed towards his head avoiding the sight of the sleeping king.

Kalayavana also entered the same cave, following Shri Krishna and found Mucukunda sleeping there. The evil minded Kalayavana, himself reached before the sleeping king, who was the death for him.

As a fire fly jumps into the fire flame, himself, similarly Kalayavana, taking Mucukunda to be Shri Krishna sleeping there, kicked him for his own destruction.

The Rajarsi Macukunda, woke up at once with the kick of Kalayavana. Firstly, his sleep was disturbed and on the other hand the Yavana had kicked him, as a result of which Mucukunda was enraged.

Then having been reminded of the boon he had received from Indra and other gods, he looked at Kdlayavana. By his looking in rage, Kalayavana, started burning in flames.

As the Vajra burns the dry tree, similarly the fire flames emerging out of the enaraged eyes of Mucukunda, reduced Kdlayavana to ashes in a moment.

Then the intelligent Shri Krishna’s desired task was established. Then he spoke quite pleasent words to the king Mucukunda, who had been sleeping since long.

“O king, you had been sleeping here since long. The sage Narada had told me about you. You have (unknowingly) eatablished my great cause. Let you meet with welfare. Now I shall take leave of you.

Finding Shri Krishna smaller in size, Mucukunda, realised that a long time has passed changing the yuga (aeon).

The king then asked Govinda, “who are you? what for have you come here? For how long have I slept here. You tell me in case you are aware of it.”

Shri Krishna said — There had been the king Yayati the son of Nahusa in the lunar dynasty. Yadu was his eldest son. Yadu had four more younger brothers.

О excellent one, О lord of kings, you should know, that I have been born in the race of Yadus. I am the son of Vasudeva, known as Krishna. People also know me by the name of Vasudeva. I am Vasudeva, who has come here.

You had slept in Tretayuga. I have known everything from Narada about you. Presently is the time of the end of Dvapara and the start of Kaliyuga. Besides this, of what use can I be for you?

О great monarch, you have burnt my enemy to ashes, who as per the boon of the gods, could not be defeated by me, even in a hundred years, in war.”

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, at these words of Shri Krishna, the monarch Mucukunda, came out of the cave, followed by the successful Shri Krishna.

He found that the earth was filled with small sized humans, having little of enthusiasm, stregth, prowess, and valor. Only the kingdom had been left, which is ruled by some one else.

Then the king Mucukunda, sent off Shri Krishna, with great affection. He himself then proceeded on to the himalaya mountain for performing tapas.

After performing tapas in the Himalaya, Mucukunda, at the end of his age, reached the heaven.

On the other hand, lord Vasudeva — who was immensely learned, getting his enemy killed in the aforesaid way, excercised his control over his entire army.

The intelligent Shri Krishna, took along with him the army, whose king had been killed and comprising innumerable chariots, horses, kavacas, weapons, and the flags.

Then lord Janardana, whose task had been established, presented the entire army to the king Ugrasena. The enormous riches he received added the grace of the city of Dvaraka.

Here ends chapter — 57, of the Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the killing of Kalayavana. (Vrs. 1-70, P.T. = 6226)
