Description of the Descendents of Vaivasvata Manu and birth of Pururava.

Vaishampayana said: О best of the race of Bharata, similar to Vaivasvata Manu were Iksavaku, Nabhaga, Dhrsnu, Saryatl, Narisyanta, Pransu, Nabhagarista, Kuriidhra and Prsdhra.

O Protector of the people, before the birth of the hundred sons, Prajapati Manu, for seeking progeny had perfomed a yajna for Mitra-varuna. At the time of the performing of the yajna, at that time, the Rishi poured the offering in favour of Mitra and Varuna. О best of the race of Bharata, after the completion of the offering all the gods, Gandharvas, humans and the Munis dwelling in asramas, getting delighted exclaimed, “His strength of tapas is surprising and his knowledge of sastras (scriptures) is simply wonderful.

In that sacrifice, a daughter named Ila clad in beautiful garments and wearing divine ornaments appeared, she had a divine figure.

This is quite well known. The king Manu addressed the girl as Ila and said,“o noble one, you follow me. Then Ila spoke to the Prajapati desirous of a son thus.

Ila said:- “О best of the orators, I cannot kill dharma otherwise dharma is bound to kill me. I have been born of the amsa of Mitra- Varuna and therefore I shall go to them”.

Thus Ila with beautiful buttocks, thus speaking to Manu, went to Mitra-Varuna and spoke to them with folded hands.

“О gods I have been born of the ariisas of both of you, therefore you please tell me as to whom shall I serve. The sage has desired me to follow him.”

О king, at these words of the saintly Ila, you listen to the words spoken by them to the girl.

“O girl with the slender waist, both of us are extremely pleased with your humility, dharma, self control and truthfulness.

О fortunate one, you will be known as our daughter and the son of Manu, to prolong his race shall be born of you alone.

O gracious on you will prolong the race of Manu, known as Sudyumna, who will be well known in the world.”

On hearing these words, she was going to Manu. But in the meantime Budha desired her to have a union with her on the way.

О king then Budha, the son of the Moon produced a son named Pururava from this girl. After giving birth to the child, Ila became Sudumna.

О Bharata, Sudumna had three religious minded sons who were known as Utkala, Gaya and Vinatashva.

О king, Utkla became the capital of Utkala. (orissa) Vinitasva became the king of the western region and О best of Bharatas, Gaya, had his country’s capital at Gayapuri in the east.

О adorable one, the destroyer of enemies, after the entry of Manu in the Sun, his ten sons including Iksavaku and others, got the country of central provinces.

The entire earth comprising of the height of glory, the mines and forests, belongs to Iksavakus.

Sudumna because of the womenly nature could not achieve that position. But because of the words of Kurudvaha vasistha Mahatma Dharmaraja Sudumna too was awarded the country of Pratisthanapur. (Jhusi-Prayaga).

The immensely glorious Sudumna after achieving the kingdom, ruled Pratisthan for sometime. He subsequently gave his kingdom to Pururava.

Utkala had three sons, who were well known in the world and were known as Dhrstaka, Ambrisa and Danda.

Mahatma Danda, established a place named Dandakaranya which served as the best of asrama for the ascetics and was well known in the world. With the mere entry in that forest one was relieved of all the siuns.

О Sudumna, the king of Bharata race, Sudyumna, as a girl, gave birth to Aila (Pururava) and at the male form produce three sons named Utkala and others, before he left for heaven. Sudyumna possessed symptoms of both male and female. She conceived as Ila, then he as a male came to be known as Sudyamna.

О Bharata, the fifth son was known as Narisyanta had Saka as his son. The second son of Manu was Ambrisa — the emperor.

The third son of Manu was Dhrsnu’s Dharstaka - the ksatriya. He was quite stubborn in the war. The eighth son of Manu was KarUsa Ksatriya, who was terrific on the war. In his mandala there were thousand and thousand of ksatriyas, who were quite strong. Nabhagaristha’s ksatriya sons turns as the trader.

The sixth son of Manu known as Pransu had a son, who was known as Saryati. Narisyanta - the fifth son of Manu was known as Danda carrier Dama. Saryati - the second son of Manu had two children out of them one was Anarta and the daughter was known as Sukanya. She was married to the sage Cyavana Anarta had a glorious son named Reva.

He ruled the country of Anarta (present Dwdrka.) The capital city of his kingdom was Kusasthuli. Reva had a son named Rawata. His other name was kukuksi. He was quite religious minded.

He was the eldest of all the hundred sons of Reva. After achieving the kingdom of kusasthali, once he went to Brahmalok with his daughter Revatl, where he started listening to the music of Gandharvas for two watches. But in the mean time several yugas passed on earth. Thereafter he reached his capital which was then surrounded by the Yadavas but upto that time his youthful age was intact.

Many entrance getes had been added to the city which was being protected by the warriors of Bhoja, Vrsni and Andhaka- vahsas, besides Vasudeva. The Yadavas had changed the name of the place to Dvaravatl.

О subjugator of the enemy, the king Raivata, realising the truth of the situation, gave away his daughter Revati, in Baladeva’s hands and he himself went to the peak of the mountain and strated living there, performing tapas. On the other hand Balarama too enjoyed happy life with Revati.

Chapter 11

The story of Dhundhumari

Janamejaya said: О best of the Dvijas, how is it that Revati and Kukudmi Raivata could not attract old age, even after the lapse of many yugas?

The great grandson of Saryati, known as Raivata produced son to the Meru mountain, then how could his progeny still exist on earth. I would like to know the truth about it.

Vaishampayana said: О sinless and the best among the Bharatas race, there is no death, hunger or thirst and old age in Brahmaloka. The cycle of the seasons also has no effect there. There is always the same season and other conditions there.

О adorable one, when Raivata Kukudmi went to Brahmaloka, then yaksas and Raksasas destroyed Kusasthali.

The religious minded Mahatma Raivata had a hundred brothers, who could not be defeated by the demons. But because of the repeated and continued attacks of the Raksas as they fled away to the different directions.

О Rajendra, with the fleeing of his hundred brothers, then the other Ksatruyas of the same race, also fled away to different directions.

О lord of the people, their vast race was spread here and there. The religious minded ksatriyas of their race, who fled to different directions, came to be known as Saryata. О best of the Bharata race, О Kurunavdena, all those Ksatriyas entred the mountain caves in all the four directions.

Both the sons of Nabhaga and Arista, turning as Vaisyas, again embraced Brahmanahood. The sons who had been terrific in war, were born to Karusa as ksatriyas.

We have heard that the sixth son of Manu had a son of Pransu subcaste. He because of the killing of the preceptor’s cow was turned as a SUdra. О son of Bharata race, I have thus described the nine sons of the Vaivasvata Manu.

O adorable one, with the sneezing of Manu, a son named Iksarvaku was born. Iksavaku too had a hundred sons. All of them could bestow larged amounts in daksina to (the Brahmanas)

Vikuksi was the eldest of all the sons. The said Vikuksi had a vast chest and as such no one could face him. The same Vikuksi, the extremely religious king became the lord of Ayodhya.

О king, he had fifty sons including Sakuni, who protected the country staying in Uttarapatha.

О lord of the people, his forty eight sons, stayed in the southern directions, and protected the southern borders.

The valorous Iksavaku entrusted the performing of Astaka Sraddha to his son Vikuksi. He was desired to bring the pulp of a particular type of fruit for the purpose.

But, О adorable one, KUksi consuned himself a bit of the fruit pulp, which had been brought by him for the said purpose, ahead of performing the Sraddha. Then he returned to the capital after hunting.

At that point of time, Iksavaku at the advice of vasistha discarded the Sasada. At the death of Iksavaku, Sasada reached the capital and started ruling the country.

A son named Kakustha was born to Sasada. He had been remembered by Indra initially at the time of the war between gods and the demons. At that point of time, he turning Indra as a bull, mounted over his back and won the enemies. Because of that he was known as Kakustha, who had a son named Anena. Prthu was the son of Anena.

Prthu had a son named Vistrasva, while Vistrasua had a son named Ardra, Yuvanasva was the son of Ardra and Yuvanasva had a son named Shrava.

Kuvalasva was his religious minded son, who came to be known as Dhundhumar, after killing the demon named Dhun- dhumare.

Janamejaya said:- О Brahman, I would like to listen to the story of the killing of Dhundhumara, as a result of which Kavalasva come to be known by the name of Dhundhumara.

Kuvalasva had a hundred sons who were exellent in archery.

All the religious minded sons used to give enormous daksina in the yajnas. Brhadasva crowned his eldest son named Kuvalasva as the king.

Entrusting all his fortunes to the case of his son, the king Vrhadasva proceeded to the forest. At that point of time, the sage Uttanka prevented him from proceeding to the forest.

He was known by the name of Sravastaka and occupied the throne. He established the city of Sravasti.

Uttanka said:- О king, it is your duty to protect us. Therefore you perform that duty first, otherwise you will not be able to perform the tapas peacefully.

О king, when the various kings like you will protect the earth, only them it can remain peaceful. Therefore, it would not be proper for you to go to the forest.

We realise that by living here and taking care of the people, you are sure to earn much more merits, which could not be available while staying in the forest.

Therefore, shed away the idea of proceeding to the forest.

О Rajarsi by taking care can of the populase, the comparable merit could not be found anywhere. The king must protect the people Therefore you protect the people.

Close to my asrama in the plain desert land, there is an ocean filled with sand known by the name of Ujjanaka, where, there lives a gigantic Raksasa, who can not be killed by the gods even. He happens to be the son of the great demon Madhu, who is known as Dhundhu. He lives there concealing himself in sand and is performing tapas there for the destruction of all the four lokas.

When he exhales breath, after a year the entire earth and the mountains start shaking.

His breathing wind causes huge storm raising the dust and covers the path of the sun. At the same time it causes earthquake for a week.

At that point of time sparks, flames, and terrific smoke emerge from the ground. Therefore, О adorable one, I am unable to live in my asrama.

For the purpose of bestowing welfare to the people you better destroy the terrific Daitya, after his killing when we shall feel comfortable.

О lord of earth, only you will be able to kill him, because, in earlier yuga, Visnu had bestowed a boon on me.

According to the said boon of the lord, the king of Ayoudhaya would cause the death of the demon, by strengthening his body with the lusre of Visnu.

О lord of earth, Dhundhu can not be killed by a person of a lesser lustre even in a hundred years. He possesses so much of strength that he can not be subjugated even by the gods.

When the sage Uttanka thus spoke to the king, then he, for the destruction of Dhundhu, deputed his son Kuvalasva to serve him.

Brhadsva said: О lord, I have discarded the weapons. But, О best of the Rishis, he is my son, who is dedicated to you, who would surely be Dhundhumara.

Thus speaking the praiseworthy Rajarsi commanding his son for the destruction of Dhundhu, himself left for the mountain for performing of tapas.

Then the king Kuvalasva accoupanied with sage Uttanka and a hundred sons, marehed on for punishing the demm.

At that point of time lord Visnu, at the inspiration of the sage Uttanka, for the benefit of people, entred the body of the king.

Then at the departure of the terrific king a deep voice was heard from the sky,“This graceful king is beyond destruction and today Dhundhu would surely be killed at his hands.”

О best of the Bharata race, the gods then sounded their trumpets and the rain of flowers was showered on him from all the four sides.

The excellent and victorious king besides being valorous, together with his sons, reached the spot and made his warrior to dig the sand.

О descentant of Kauravas, the valorous king possessing the tejas of Narayana, became more resplendant.

O king while digging, the sons of Kuvalasva found out Dhundhu hiding himself under the sand where he was lying down surrouding the western direction.

Dhundhu on his part, burning the world with flames coming out of his mouth, destroying the world, made the stream of water to flow. As the disturbance is created in ocean, with the rise of the moon, and its waves start expanding, similarly the muddy water with waves, muddy water like stream rushed out the demon then, with the emitting of the fire flames from his mouth, destroyed all the sons (except three) of Kuvalasva.

О son of Kuru’s race, then the king, for the purpose of killing Dhundhumara, reached before the demon.

Then the yogi king with the use of yoga, drank the force of water, as a result of which the fire was subsided.

Then the king after forcefully killing the demon Dhundhu, establishing his task successfully. Then the body of the demon was shown by the king to the sage Uttanka.

At that point of time, the king was bestowed with a boon by the sage saying, “you will always passess the imperishable riches and you can never be destroyed by the enemies.

You will always have faith in dharma and you shall live in the heaven for an unending period. Besides your sons who have been killed in the war shall enjoy life in eternal place in the heaven.
