Vaivasveta Manu Birth of Yama-YamI, Yamuna, Asvanikumaras and Saturn

Vaismpayana said: О destroyer of the enemies, Vivasvan was born from the union of kasyapa and the daughter of Daksa. Sanjyadevi the daughter of Trasta was married to Vivasavan.

The pure hearted wife of Mahatma Martanda, came to be known as surenu in the three worlds.

She was quite beautiful and youthful, known as Sanjaha, because of the replendence and tejas of her husband Swrya, was not happy.

The body of Sanjna and her limbs became searched with the heat of the Sun, therefore, She could not like the Sun very much.

During the time of ignorance of Aditi, the sage Kasyapa had lovingly said to her that it is not dead, but the egg has been planted in the wombs. Because of that the sun is known by the name of Martanda on earth.

(When the sun was in the womb of Aditi, at that time Budha, came to her to seek alms. But Aditi, because of her being heavy with pregnency, could not get up to give alms. Then Budha prononced a curse on her for the child in the womb to be dead. On hearing this Aditi was upset. Then Kasyapa with’his divine powers, removed the curse of Budha and declared that the child was not actually dead, the egg is still preserved in the womb. With the feeling of Aditi that her child in the womb was dead, the Sun is known as Martanda.)

О adorable one, the child in womb survived because of the glory of the sage Kasyapa. Therefore vivasvan possesses the enormous respelendence. Because of that heat the sun heats up the three worlds.

О sage of the Kuru dynasty, Aditi is the foremost of those who heat up the world produced two Prajapati sons besides a daughter. These were the three children produced by Sanjna.

Out of those three, one was known as Vaivasvata Manu, son of Vivasvan (surya) and the other Prajapati was Sraddhadeva, Yama. Thus the twin children were known as Yama and Yami.

Thereafter, Sanjna, observing sharp heat of the sun, could not bear the same, she made her overshadow, with her own name and form established her.

Then the illusory Sanjna, emerged out of the real Sanjna. О Naresvara, then Chaya offering her salutation the Chaya, with folded hands said, “O lady with serene smile, tell me, what should I do? О lady with beautiful limbs, I shall surely obey your command, you give me your command”.

Sarijana said: Let you meet with welfare. I am now proceeding to my parental home. You live in this house of mine, peacefully. I have two sons and a beautiful daughter. You should take good care for them. Never reveal this secret to lord Surya at any time.

Chaya said: — I shall never reveal this secret to anyone unless I am dragged pulling my hair, or when I face a curse. You can comfortably leave for your parental home.

Vaishampayana said:- By this commanding the duplicate Chaya, possessing her own form and name, and saying very well to her, the ascetic turned Sanjna, feeling a bit shy, reached her father Tvasta. On reaching her parental home, her father scolded her and he asked her again and again to return to her husband. Then Sanjna, who always kept herself away from the deplorable and evil ways, she changed her form as a mare, went to the Uttara Kuru country and she started grazing there.

The sun god, taking the duplicate Sanjna as the real one, produced a son resembling himself from her womb.

О adorable one, he was also of the same strength and complexion resembling Manu. Therefore he was called as Savarna.

He became Manu known by the name of Savarna. The second son born of Chaya was known as Sani and Saturn.

Then Parthivi Sanjna or the Duplicate Sanjna loved her son more but could not extend the same love for the children of the real Sanjna. Manu somehow could bear it, but Yama could not tolerate the same.

The same Vaivasvata Yama, because of his childish nature and anger, besides the move of the destiny scolded his mother showing his foot.

Because of this the Savarni mother, feeling painful and enraged prononced a curse on Yama that his foot should fall.

Yama, was immensely pained with the curse of his mother and feeling panicky for the possible loss of a foot, he went to his father and revealed the truth to him.

He said to the sun — his father, “you kindly ensure, that 1 should not be affected with curse of the mother. The love of mother should be equal for all the sons.

But she leaving us all, loves more with the youngest son. Therefore I had only raised my foot but did not hurt her. This was done by me out of my childdish behaviour or due to the move of destiny. Therefore, you forgive me.

Then Sanjna said, “O son, I am your mother and am respectable. But still you have shown disrespect to me. Therefore your foot will surely fall”. A son could be an evil son, but the mother can not be an evil mother.

О lord of the Lokas, the mother has cursed me, but О lord of burning rays, you shower your grace on me that my foot should not fall by your grace.

Vivasvana said:- You are truthful and religious minded one, О son, there should be some very serious cause of your anger.

I cannot negitivate the words of your mother, but О learned one, that wound shall appear from your foot and crawl on earth, carrying your flesh. Then you will get some relief. In this way the words of your mother would also be truthful and you would be saved of the effect of your curse.

Then surya said to Sanjna, “all the sons are equal, then why do you extend your love on them unequally”. The sun repeated this again and again, but she kept on smiling and she did not reply at all.

О son of Kuru race, then lord Surya, concentrating his mind, by means of his yogic powers, could realise the truth. Therefore the purpose of destroying her, he held the hair of her head. On going free from the vow, Chaya, revealed the total truth to the sun god.

On hearing the truth, the Sun god was filled with rage and reached Tvasta, who welcomed him appropriately. But when Tvasta realised that the sun god intended to reduce him to ashes, he started speaking humbly to Suryanarayana.

Tvasta said: О Aditya, your immensely resplendent form does not look proper. Because Sanjna was unable to bear it, she is grazing the grass in the forest.

О lord of rays, today Sanjna, with excellent conduct like Laksmi, who is served by the elephant trunks, taking to the form of a mare, by means of yogic exercise, is performing tapas. The tree leaves serve as her food. She has grown thin, wearing matted locks of hair over the head, observing celebacy, you can meet with your loving wife.

О lord, in case my words suit you, then, О destroyer of the enemies, I shall make your form quite pleasant today.

In earlier times form (rays) of the sun was transverse, high and similar on all the sides. With that form, he had been known as Vibhavasu.

Therefore, Prajapati SUryanarayana well understood the words of Tvasta and in order to have his form corrected permitted Tvasta to do so.

O Bharata, then Tvasta went to Surya- Martanda and using the grinding stone, started turning his body eveuly.

Thus with the scrapping of the lustre his beauty blossomed and appeared quite graceful.

Since that date the form of SUrya the Lord of the rays was changed for the better. At that point of time his face became red. The cosmetics which had been dropped from the face of the Sun, produced twelve Adityas. Who were known by the names of Dhata, Aryama, Mitra, Varuna, Amsa, Bhaga, Indra, Vivasvan, Pusa, Parjanya and Tvasta, besides Visnu who was the twelfth. Since Visnu appeared last of all, he possessed the best of the Virtues.

Lord Surya finding the emerging of the twelve Suryas from his body, who were illumining, wearing the crowns over their heads, the Sun god was immensely pleased.

This way, by adoring SUrya-narayatxa, Trasta said to him, “Now you can go to your wife, who is wandering in the Uttara- Kuru country. She, taking to the form of a mare, is grazing the green grass, in the forest of grassy land.

Thereafter Suryanarayana also taking to the form of a horse which was suitable for his wife. Then the Sun god sighted with his divine sight and found that his wife had taken to the form of a mare, unmindful of any danger from any quarter was roaming about fearlessly, who was spotted by him. Then the Sun god in the form of a horse reached before her Sahjna (the mare). Then she taking him to be a stranger started obstructing cohabiting with him. The semen of the Sun was dropped on earth through the nostrils.

As a result of this, AsvanI kumaras, the best of the physicians were born out of that semen. Both the Asvanlkumaras came to be known as Nasatya and Dasra.

O Bharata, both of them were the sons of the eight Prajapati known as Martanda, who were produced by lord Sun, from Sahjna in form of a mare. Thereafter, the Sun god appeared before them in his pleasant form.

O Janamejaya, then Sahjna, finding her husband there, was immensely pleased. On the other hand, Yama used to remain very unhappy because of his earlier deed.

Therefore, he performed activities suiting Dharmaraja, and pleasing the people. Because of his noble performance, the powerful Dharmaraja was leader of Pitra(manes) and the Lokapalas. He ultimately with the perfoming of his tapas, became Savarna Manu.

The all competent Savarna, would be the Manu of eighth future Manvantara. Even today he is engaged in the perfoming of tapas over the peak of the Meru mountain.

His brother known as Sani, became a planet. The Nasatya, who has been mentioned earlier, became the physician of the heaven.

He bestows peace to the horses engaged in adoration. With the scrap of the some lustre, the cakra of lord Visnu was made for the destruction of the demons. This cakra could not miss the target in the war.

The younger daughter known as YamI was quite glorious. She was best of the rivers and could purify the people. Manu is known as Manu in the world and also as Savarna.

His other son and the brother of Manu, known as Sani, attained the position of a planet adored by all.

A person who listens to the birth of these gods, or recites their names mentally, he is freed of all the misfortunes and earns enormous glory.

Here ends Chapter 9, of Harivansa Parva of the Harivansa Purana a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to Vaivasvita Manu, birth of Yama and Yami (Yamuna), Asvani kumara and Saturn. (Vrs. 1-66, P.T. = 597)
