The story of the king Pururava and his dynasty, creation of Tretagni and his visit to the country of the Gandharvas

Vaishampayana said: О Maharaja, Budha had an intelligent son named Pururava. He was illustrious, giver of charitiess, performer of sacrifices, valorous in war besides being invincible from the enemies. The said king was an Agtiihotra and the performer of the Yajnas.

The king Pururava was truthful and possessed the pure thoughts. He had a beautiful body and enjoyed conjugal pleasures in secrecy. He, during his times, had been quite glorious in the three words.

The Apsara Urvasi, had accepted Pururava - who was exponent of Brahman, compassinate, follower of dharma and truthful, as her husband, shedding away her pride.

О Bharata, the king Pururava, spent ten years with Urvasi in the pleasent Caitraratha forest, five years in Alakapuri - lodged over the banks of the river Mandakini, five years in the forests of Badarinarayana, for six years in the excellent Nandanavana, for seven years in Uttara Kuru country, which fulfills all the desires having trees laden with fruits, for eight years over the peaks of the Gandamadana mountains, for ten years over the peaks of the Meru mountain, for eight years over the Uttaranchal mountains.

The king Pururava, together with Urvasi, used to roam about in the prominent forests of the gods quite delightfully.

Pururava - the lord of earth, together with Urvasi, used to rule Prayaga, which was praised by the great sages, being extremely holy place.

The king Pururava produced from the womb of Urvasi, seven sons, resembling gods, known by the names of Ayu, Amavasu, Visvayu, Srutayu, Drdhayu, Vanayu and Satayu. All of them possessed mental strength.

Janamejaya said: О Vaishampayana - the great orator, Urvasi had been an apsara, then why did she accepted a human discarding the gods? You please tell me?”

Vaishampayana said: О king, Urvasi had to come to the earth, because of a curse from Brahma. The beautiful Urvasi, with charming limbs had stayed with Pururava, on certain conditions.

О lord of earth, she in order to free herself from the curse, that she would not look at the naked body of Pururava, but would enjoy her company whenever she was desirous of the same. For sleep she would always be tied to her bed and that she would have the food of a small quantity of ghee daily.

She then declared, “O king, till such time you will honour these conditions firmly, I shall stay with you till then. This is my firm resolve before you.”

The king thereafter fulfilled all the conditions since then. Thus the excellent apsara continued to stay with Pururava.

Because of the curse, Urvasi, getting attracted with Pururava, she continued for fifty nine years. Then the Gandharvas thought of Urvasi who had lived with Pururava for so long.

Gandharvas said: О excellent ones how should Urvasi - the best of apsaras return to the gods? You should think of some way out? She indeed is quite precious for the heaven.”

Then Visvasu Gandharva — the best of the orators said, “I am aware of the conditions laid down by them earlier.

In case the king violates the condition, then she would surely desert the king. I am also aware of the method of breaking the promise of the king.

In order to accomplish your task, I shall go there with my man,” Thus speaking, the glories Gandharva, went to Prayaga, with his associates.

Reaching there, he during the night stole away the sleep, which was liked by Urvasi like its mother.

The glorious, Urvasi, then learning about the arrival of the Gandharvas thought, ‘The time for the end of my curse has arrieved. “Then she said to the king, the thieves have stolen my child.”

Inspite of that, the king did not get up naked, for the fear that in case Urvasi saw him naked she would desert him at the falsification of his vow.

In the mean time the Gandharvas stole away the other sleep as well. After the stealing of the second sleep, Urvasi then said, to Pururava.

“O valorous king, someone has stolen my sons like orphans.” At these words of Urvasi, the king got up naked rushed spotting the foot prints of the sleep. At the same time the Gandharvas asked the lightening, which illuminated the entire palace. Then UrvasI spotted the king in a naked condition. Then the lustful apsara disappeared viewing the king in a naked condition.

On the other hand, the king, caught hold of the sleep released by the Gandharvas and when he returned with them to the place, UrvasI was no where to be found. Feeling grieved, he started lamenting.

Then he started wandering on earth in search of UrvasI. After some time, the king found Urvasi, taking bath with her friends, in the Plaksatirtha of Kuruksetra, where she was engaged in water sport.

Finding Urvasi thus sporting, the king was filled with grief and started lamenting. Urvasi on the other hand finding Pururava there, pointed out to her playmates, saying, “He is the best of humans, with whom I lived for long.”

At the same time all the apsaras were upset. Then the king said to Urvasi, “O dear, you wait for a while, О stone hearted one, stop for a while and remain firm on your words.” Then both of them conversed with eachother reciting the Vedic Suktas in mental discussion. At that point of time, Urvasi said to Pururava., the son of Ila, «O lord, I have been impregnated by you.

“О king, your sons would be born of me, at the lapse of one year, every time.

Then the immensely glorious king felt delighted and returned to his city. After the lapse of a year, Urvasi again met Pururava.

The immensely glorious Urvasi then spent a night with him. Then Urvasi said to Pururava,’’Gandharvas intend to shower a boon on you.

Therefore, О king, now you may ask for a boon. You better ask them to grant you parity with the Gandhravas.”

Then Pururava asked for a boon from the Gandharvas, which was granted by them. They placed fire in a plate and said to Pururava.

“Performing a Yajna with this fire, you will be able to approach our loka.” Thereafter the king together with the fire and his son entered the city.

Then after going to the forest he could not find the fire, but instead he found a pipal tree growing there.

Then the king finding a Sami (a thorny tree) tree in which a pipal tree had sprouted, felt surprised, and they informed the Gandharvas about the absence of the fire there.

The Gandharvas listened to the entire talk and said to him, “You make aranis of the pipal tree and chum them according to the provision of the scriptures and then produce the fire. They did so dividing the fire in three parts — Then they performed the sacrifice with the same fire. Then he performing several Yajnas with the triple fire and they achieved parity with the Gandharvas and reached their country.

The king Pururava after achieving boon from the Gandharvas, had created triple fire. Initially there had been a simple fire but Pururava made it triple.

О best of the kings, the king Pururava was so glorious, that he ruled at the extremely auspicious place known as Jhunsi, which had been praised even by the Rishis.

Here ends Chapter 26, of Harivansa Parva of the khilabhaga of Mahabharata, relating to the story of the king Pururava and his dynasty, creation of the triple fire and his visit to the country of Gandharvas.(Vrs. 1-49, P.T.= 1382)
