Origin of the moon, the RajasUya yajna, fight between gods and demons and birth of Budha

Vaishampayana said: О king, in the ancient times, Brahma thought of creating the world. At that point of times, because of his mental resolve, first of all Atri — the father of Soma was born.

The sage Atri was also engaged in the creation of world. He together with his sons used to perform deeds, which caused welfare to the creatures of the universe.

We have heard that in ancient times, the sage Atri, while performing his vrata performed tapas for three thousand years, raising up his arms, staying unmoved like the stones or a wall, without causing any harm to any creature, remaining immobile, performed to tapas called Anuttara.

О Bharata the sage Atri was an immensely glorious possessing sathranguna. He kept on gazing without winking his eyes, observing celebacy, performed tapas while standing. Because of this, his body was turned like a moon.

The sage having the spotless heart, once dropped lustre from his eyes resembling Soma, in the form of water which illuminating all the directions, started moving upwards in the sky.

Then the delighted goddesses of the directions, collectively lodged the lustre in their respective wombs, but were unable to contain the same.

Then the illustrious garbha (womb) which strengthened the entire world, having the cold rays, illuminating the world, fell suddenly from the womb of the goddesses of the directions.

Where the goddesses of the directions could not stop the lustre of the womb, then it fell on earth with them.

Finding the fall of soma, Brahma the grandsire, kept it over the chariot for the welfare of the universe.

O excellent one, we have heard that the said chariot was the form of the Vedas and dharma sanctified by the truth. A thousand white horses had been yoked in the same.

With the fall of Soma — the son of Atri, the well known seven sons of Brahma started enlogising him.

Bhrgu Rishi of Angira gotra and his sons Rgveda, Yajurveda, (Samaveda) and Atharvaveda also started offering prayer to Soma with several stutis.

With the prayer, 0 candra, let each one of ray be strenghened, the lustre of the illuminating son, was spread in all the three lokas.

Thereafter the illustrious Brahma, mounting over Somavan charist went round the earth twenty one times, upto the ocean.

At that point of time the tejas of the moon, after over flowing, started falling on earth, which produced the osadhis.

With those osadhis the creatures of the earth, sky and the heaven were benefitted. The creature born of the womb, sweat or perspiration, those born of eggs and produced of earth could be maintained. 0 king, in this way the moon feeds all the creatures of the world.

The aquatic goddesses having the white complexiop like selver, also maintain the world with their water and the moon serves as a treasure for them. They are known by their deeds.

O Janamejaya, thereafter, Brahma, who is the best among those who are aware of Brahman, declared the moon as the king of seeds, Osadhis, Brahmanas and the king of water.

О great king, thereafter, the moon was consecrated as the emperor of all the kindoms because, he happened to be the best among the illuminating sources. Thereafter the emperor moon started illuminating all the Lokas with its lustre.

At that point of time, Duksa - the son of the Pracetas gave away in marriage, twenty seven of his daughters, to the moon, who are treated to be the constellations by the learned people.

The moon by getting such a vast empire, Soma, who had been the best of the manes, started performing of the RajasUya yajna in which he gave away in charity a lakh of cows of the Brahmanas.

In the Yajna of Soma, lord Atri officeated as the Yajna priest, Bhrgu officiated as the reciter of Vedic hymns, Hiranyagarbha was the performer of the sacrifice.

In the Yajna, the Brahmarsis like Sanatkumara and other, had declared Narayana lord of Yajna.

О Bharata, it has been heard by us that Soma gave away in charity three lokas to Brahmarsis as daksina. At that point of time the nine goddesses known as Kuhu, Dyuti, Pusti, Prabha, Vasu, Kirti, Dhrti, Laksmi and Sinovali always remained in attendence with the moon.

In this way, the moon, having been honoured by all the Rishis and gods, become the lord of the Brahmanas, took the sacred bath. Thereafter he started illuminating the ten directions.

О excellent one the mind of the moon after possessing all the honour and riches was polluted and filled with arrogance. He was overpowered with evil.

Then he humiliated all the sons of Angira forcibly kidnapped the chaste wife of Brhaspati, known by the name Tara.

Even at the request of the gods and the Rishis, he did not care to return Tara — the wife of Brhaspati to her husband. This enraged Brhaspati — the priest of the gods.

At that point of time Sukracarya stood behind the moon, while Rudra sided with Brhaspati, because Rudra was the disciple of Angira, the father of Brhaspati.

At that point of time lord Siva came to the help of Brhaspati carrying the Ajagava bow.

Then Rudra, aiming at the Raksasas, shot an excellent arrow named Brahma- sara, which reduced to ashes the entire glory of the demons.

A great war was fought between the gods and the demons over Tara which is well known as the war of Tarakamaya. In this war many people of the world were destroyed.

О Bharata, the gods and the Tusitaganas who escaped from the war, went to Brahma to take refuge with him.

Then Brahma suitably advised Sankara, most of the Rudras, besides gods and Sukracarya and dissuaded them from waging the war. Then he himself went to the moon, brought back Tara and handed her over to Brhaspati.

At that point of time finding Tara pregnant, Brhaspati asked, you should not carry the other’s womb in my region.”

Then Tara went to some improper place of reeds and gave birth to an illustrious son - the killer of demons.

The prince possessing all the fortunes, soon after his birth made the resplendence of the gods to fadeout with the lustre of his body. The gods then becoming doubtful asked her.

You tell us truthfully, whether, this child belongs to the moon or Brhaspati?" But inspite of so questioning by the gods Tara. failed to give a reply and kept mum. Then the infant — the killer of demons, got ready to pronounce a curse on her. At that point of time, Brahma, stopping the child questioned Tara himself.

He said, “O Tara, who is the father of this child? You tell me truthfully.” Them Tara, spoke to Brahma with folded hands.

“О lord, this is the son of the moon. Then the moon being the father of the child, smelt his head and gave the name of Budha to the intelligent child. Now the same Budha shines in the sky as a star and some times conducts himself adversely.

Thereafter Ila — the daughter of Vairdja, produced a son from Budha, who came to be known as the father of Pururava.

Mahatma Pururava produced seven sons from the womb of Urvasi. In the meantime the moon attracted the disease of consumption.

After having been attracted with the disease of consumption, the disc of the moon started declining then he went to take refuge with his father — the sage Atri.

Then Atri — the great ascetic, removed his suffering. Then the moon, getting relieved of the disease of consumption, started illuminating the whole world.

О great king, “In this way I have narrated to you the stoiy of the birth of the moon, which increases the glory. Now you listen from me about the race of the moon.

A person is'relieved of all the sins, on hearing about the story of the birth of the moon. The story of the birth of the moon, when listened by a person, relieves him of all the sins. This birth story of the moon, bestows the riches, long life, good health, besides the merits. All the desires of a person are fulfilled after listening to the story.

Here ends Chapter 25, of Harivansa Parva, of the khilabhaga of Mahabharata, relating to the origin of the moon, the Rajasuya yajna, fight between the gods and the demons and the birth of Budha. (Vrs. 1-51, P.T.= 1333)
