Tradition of Rcheyu under Puru dynasty — besides Ajanidha vamsa, Pancala, Soma, Kaurava vamsa etc.

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, Rcheyu the royal Rishi, has been considered to be the sovereign emperor. He was invincible by others. Jvalana was the wife of Rcherya, who was the dougther of snake king Taksaka.

Rajarsi Matinara was born out of the womb of Jvalana who became the lord of earth. Matinara had three extremely virtuous sons, known by the names of Tansu, Pratiratha and virtuous Subahu. Besides the sons, Matinara also had a daughter named Gauri. She possessed all the auspicious symbols and became the mother of Mandhata.

All the sons of Matinara were well- versed in the vedas, devoted to the Brahmanas, truthful, having adequate knowledge in the use of arms, besides being strong and competent to wage the wars.

Kanva was the name of the second son of Pratiratha, the son of Matinara. Medhatithi was the son of Kanva who started the tradition of Kanvayana Brahmanas.

О king Janamejaya, the daughter of the king liana, came to be known as Ilini. He was the orator on Brahman and was considered the forenest of the Brahmana community. His daughter Ilini was married to Tansu as his wife.

Rajaisi surodha was born to the glorious Tansu, who was the founder of dharma and was known also by the name of Dharmanetra. He was the exponent of Brahman, besides being valorous. Upadanavi was the name of his wife, who gave birth to four sons known by the names of Dusyanta, Susumanta, Pravira and Anagha. All the four of them, were the sons of Ilanikumara Surodha or Dharmanetra.

Bharata was the name of Dusyanta’s son. He was quite valorous. Because of his Subjugating all, he also came to be known as sarvadamana. The immensely strong Bharata had the strength of ten thousand elephants.

With the semen of the king Dusyanta the emperor Bharata Cakravarti was born out of the womb of Sakuntala, on the bases of which all of you are called Bharatas.

(It is said that Dusyanta going to the Tapovana performed Gandharvas marriege with Sakuntala and returning to his kingdom, he did not speak about it to anyone. When Sakuntala carrying Bharata went to Dusyanta, then he failed to recognise her by mistake. At that point of time) the divine voice from the sky addressing the king Dusyanta spoke, «O Dusyanta, the mother is like the bellows of leather, but it is father who has a right over the son. By whosoever is the son born, he becames his form. You bring up this son and do not insult Sakuntala. О god among the humans, the son born of one’s own semen redeems his father from the hell and carries him to the heaven. You happen to be the father of this son. The words of Sakuntala are correct.

Many sons were born to Bharata and died. О excellent one, all this happened because of the anger of the mothers. The relevant story has been told by me to you (in the Adi-parva).

О king, the gods, who had arrieved in the Yajna of Bharata, made Bhardvaja — the son of Angira who was born of Brhaspati, as son of Bharata and gave him to the king.

In this connection the tale of Bhradvaja’s dharma - Samkramana is told. When the Marudganas gave away Bhardvaja to Bharata, then Bharadvaja made Bharata to perform a Yajna. Prior to this all the efforts of Bharata to beget a son, were of no avail, with the efforts of Bhardvaja, a son was born to Bharata, who was given the name of Vitatha.

After the birth of Vitatha, Bharata left for his heavenly abode. Thereafter Bhardvaja also crowing Vitatha as the king, himself retired to the forest.

The king Vitatha got five sons named Suhotra, Suhota, Gaya, Garga and Mahatma Kapila, Suhotra had two sons, who were named as valorous Kasika and the king Grtsamati. Grtsamati had the Brahmanas, Ksatriyas and Vaisyas as his sons. Kasika had two sons named Kasikeya and Dhirgatapa.

О adorable one, now you listen to the other race of Ajamidha. The king Suhotra had an other third son named Brhat, who had three sons named Ajamldha, Dvimidha and valorous Purumidha.

Ajamidha had three wives and all of them were quite glorious. They were known by the names of Nalini, Kesini and Dhumini - the best among the women.

A son named Susanta was born to Ajamidha from his wife named Nalini, Purujati was born to Susanta, while Balyasva was born to Purujatil. Bahyasva had five divine sons.

They were known by the names of Mudgala, Srnjaya, the king Brhadisu, valorous Yavinara and Kpnilasva the fifth one.

All the five of them were competent enough to exercise control over their respective kindoms. Therefore all the five prospering countries should be treated as Pancalas.

Because of their competence to protect the five countries these countries came to be known as Pancala. Maudgaya was the glorious son of Mudgala. All of them were the great souls and were Brhamanas duly associated with the Ksatriya dharma. All of them taking refuge with Angira, came to be known as Kanva - Mudgalas.

Brahmarsi Indrasena, was the glorious elder son of Modgala. Vandhyasva was born to him as his son.

Vandhyasva had a son from Menaka, his wife, besides a daughter. This is well known. The son was known as Divodasa who was a Rajarsi as well as Brahmarsi. The name of the daughter was Ahalaya who was quite glorious.

Ahalya was the wife of Gautama (Saradvari). She gave birth to the best of the sage Satananda, who also had a glorious son named Satyadhrti.(Satyadhrti too was called Sarodvan like his father) and was well versed in Dhanurveda.

Once Saradvan (Satyadhrti) at the sight of an apsara before him, became passionate and his semen fell in the forest of seeds. A twin, boy and a girl were born out of the same. At that point of time the king Santanu had gone out for hunting, who picked up both the children, having been overpowered with compassion;

Because both the children were picked up out of compassion, the boy was given the name of Krpa and the girl was given the name of Krpi. Then Satananda, Satyadhrti and Krpa became Saradvat (like Sreda) and were also called as Gautamas.

О Naresvara, I shall now speak about the progeny of Divodasa. Mitraya was the son of Brahmarsi Mitrayu. Maitrayena was born as son to Mitrayu. Maitrayena were of Soma lineage. The progeny of Somvamsa were called Maitrayas. They receiving the refuge of the Bhargava race, were called Ksetropeta Bhargavas.

A son named Pahcajana was born Srhjaya and Somadatta was born as son Pancajaniya who was the lord of earth.

The glorious Sahdeva was the son of Somadatta, while Somaka was the son of Sahadeva.

Somadeva was born in the Ajamldha vamsa, when their family traditions were on the decline. Jantu was the son of Somaka, Somaka had a hundred sons. (According to Vanaparva — chapture- 127and 128, Somaka, making Jantu as the sacrificial animal performed a Yajna, as a result of which a son was born to each one of the hundred wives).

Dhrsat was the youngest of all, who happened to be the powerful father of Drupad. Dhrstadymna was the son of Drupada, while Dhrstadyumna had a son named Dhrstaketu. The immensely valorous Ajamldha and Somaka have been termed as Ksatriyas. Mahamand Ajamidha’s progeny came to be known as Somaka.

The king Ajamldha had a third queen named Dhuminl. She was immensely desirous to have a son. О lord of earth, it is she who became the mother of your ancestors.

О Janamejaya, DhUmani, who was desirous to have a son, started performing vratas. She performed tapas for ten thousand years, pouring offering in the fire. She consumed purified and restricted food. She slept over the Kusa grass bed of Agnihotra (Yajna priest).

Thereafter the king Ajamldha united with Dhuminl, As a result of this a son named Rksa was born to her. Rksa was quite a handsome person, having the complexion of lemoke.

Samavarna was the son of Rksa and Kuru was born of Samavarna, who laid the foundation of kuruksetra and Prayaga.

О excellent one, Kum performed severe tapas in that area for long, while he was so performing tapas, Indra himself arrieved there and bestwed a boon on him.

It was quite an auspicious and pleasant region and was the dwelling place of the auspicious souls. The dynasty of Kum had been quite vast. You are known as the Kauravas, because of Kum.

Kuru had four sons namely Sudhanva, Sudhanu, the valorous Pariksit and the valorous Arimejaya.

Suhotra was the son of Sudhanva. Suhotra had the son named Madman and Madman’s son was Chyavana, who was well versed in dharma and artha.

Chyavana had a son named Krtayajna. The virtuous king, after performing of the Yajha, produced a son who was powerful like Indra.

His name was Aparichara Vasu. Vasu was the dweller of Chedi country and he could fly by air. Aparichara Vasu’s wife Girika gave birth to seven human sons.

His first son happened to be the great warrior king Brhadratha, who had been the lord of Magadha. The name of the second son was Pratyagraha. The third son was known as Kusa, who was also called as Manivahana. The fourth one was known as Marut. Yadu was the fifth one. While Matsya was the sixth one who was best of all. His seventh child was a daughter known as Kali or Satyvatl.

Brhadratha’s son was known as Kusagra. Vrsabha was the son of Kusagra, who was quite learned as well as valorous.

Puspavan was the virtuous on of Vrsabha. His valorous son was known as Satyahit.

Satyahit got a virtuous son named Uija. Sambhanu was the son of Urja, who was also known as Brhadratha. The valorous Jarasandha was born of him.

At birth his body was divided into two parts, having been born of two mothers. A demones, named Jara joined the two pieces into one. Since his body was formed by joining of the two pieces by the demoness Jara, he came to be known as Jarasendha by name.

The valorous Jarasandha conquered all the Ksatriyas. Sahadeva - the glorious one happened to be his son.

Sahadeva had a glorious and illustrious son Udayu. The extremely virtuous son Srutadharma was born to Utayu. He, possessing all the riches lived in the Magadha country.

Pariksita, the second son of Kuru, had a son named Janamejaya, who had three sons named Srutasena, Ugrasena and Bhlmasena. All the three princes were quite strong and valorous. Mitiman and Suratha were the two sons of Janamejaya.

Suratha got a valorous son who was known by the name of VidUratha. Viduratha’s valorous son was known by the name of Rksa. He was the second king known by the same name.

О king, in your race, there had been two kings with the names of Rksa and two kings known by the name of Pariksit. Three kings were known by the name of Bhlmasena and two kings were known by the name of Janamejaya.

The son of the second Rksa was Bhimsena. Bhlmasena’s son of Pratlpa and Pratipa’s son were Santanu, Devapi and Vahnika. All the three of them were the great warriors.

О lord of earth, you have been born in the race of Santanu. О Naresvara, the kingdom of Vahnika could be managed by the seven ministers.

The glorious Somadatta was the son of Vahnika. Somadatta had Bhiiri, BhUrisrava and Sala - three sons.

Devapi was the Upadhyaya and preceptors of the gods besides being an ascetic. Mahatma Cyavana accepted him as his own son.

The king Santanu carried on the burden of the race of Kuru. О lord of earth, I shall now speak on the race of Santanu in which you have been born.

The influential king Santanu, produced a son named Devavrata from the womb of Ganga. He also came to be known as Bhisma - the grand sire of the Pandavs.

О Bharata, his second wife was known as Kali (Satyavatl) produced his loving son Vicitravirya, who was quite sinless besides being virtuous.

From the wombs of the wives of Vicitravirya, Vaishampayana Vyasa produced Dhrtarastra, Pandu and Vidura.

Dhritarashtra produced a hundred sons out of his wife Gandhari. Out of those hundred sons, Duryodhana was quite excellent and influential.

Dhananjaya (Arjuna) was the son of Pandu. From Dhananjaya Abhimanyu the son of Subhadra was born. О king, Pariksita was the son of Abhimanyu and your father.

Thus I have narrated the details of the Paurava dynasty, in which you have been born. Now you listen to the progeny of Turvasu, Druhya, Yadu and Anu.

Vanhi was the son of Turvasu and Gobhanu. was the son of Vanhi. The king, Traisanu was quite invincible from others.

Traisanu had a son named Karandharma, who had a son named Maruta. Maruta the son of Aviksita was another king, about whom details have already been given (in Drona Parva of the Mahabharata — 55.37-49 and Asvamedha Parva, chapters, 6-10).

The king Maruta the son of Karandharma was issueless. He performed several huge yajnas giving enormous daksinas. He had a daughter named Sammata.

He gave his daughter in daksina to Mahatma Samvrata. (Then Samvrata handed over the girl to his father.) In union with him, Samvrata achieved Dusyanta as her son Dustanta was a sinless king.

О excellent king, thus, when the king Yayati asked his sons to accept his old age, has cursed his sons according to which Turvasu race was extinguished and was merged in Paura-Vamsa.

Dusyanta produced a son from his wife (other than Sakuntala) known as Kurutthama. Akidha was born as son to Kurutthama. He had four sons known as Pandya, Kerala, Kola and the Chola king. In this prospering country the regions came to be known as Pandya, Chola and Kerala.

О king, Druhya — the son of Yayati had two sons named Babhru and Setu, the name of whose son was Angarasetu, who was also known as Mdrutpati.

He fought a terrific war with Mandhata for fouteen months, in which Angarasetu was killed with great difficulty.

О son of Bharata, Gandhara had been the son of Angara. The country of Gandhara became famous after his name. The horses of the Gandhara country are considered the best of all the horses.

Dharma was born as son of Anu — the son of Yayati. Dhrta was the son of Dhrta. Duduhu was born as son of Dhrta. Praceta was the son of Duduhu, while Suceta was the son of Pracita. Thus I have spoken in brief about the race of Anu.

Now I shall speak about the family of Yadu who was the eldest son of Yayati in sufficient details, which you will listen from my mouth.

Here ends Chapter 32, of the Harivansa Parva of the khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the tradition of Rchesu, under Риги dynasty desides Ajamidhavarhsa, Pancala, Soma, Kaurava vansas etc.(Vrs.l-91, P.T.= 1761)
