They were known by the names of Ayu, Amavasu, Visvayu, Srutayu, Drdayu and Satayu.

Amavasu had two sons known as Bhima and Nagnajit. Bhima had a son named Kancanaprabha, while valorous Suhotra was the son of Kancanaprabha, who was quite learned.

Janhu had married Kaveri — the daughter of Yuvanasva, which had been created by Ganga from her own halfbody because of the curse of Yuvanasva. In this way Kaveri - the best of all the rivers became the spouse of Janhu.

Thereafter the Rajarsi drank the water of Ganga. But the Maharsis on coming to know of it, treating Ganga to be their own daughter like gave her the name of JanhavL

Janhu had married Kaveri — the daughter of Yuvanasva, which had been created by Ganga from her own halfbody because of the curse of Yuvanasva. In this way Kaveri - the best of all the rivers became the spouse of Janhu.

Janhu on his part produced a virtuous son named Sunaha from the womb of Kaveri. Ajaka had been the son of Sunaha.

Balakasva was the son of the king Ajaka. He had the habit of hunting. Kusa was his son.

Kusa had four sons resembling the gods and were known by the names of Kusika, Kusanabha, Kusanbha and Murtiman.

The king Kusika was grown up in the company of the forestdwellers known as Pahlvas. He started performing tapas for getting an illustrious son like Indra. Then Indra, getting frigntened, himself appeared as his son.

When a thousand years of performing tapas by Kusika were over, then Indra’s attention was drawn towards Kusifca. Then Indra with a thousand eyes, established his own semen in the body of Kausika, who had been competent enough to produce a son. In this way Indra the best of the gods, became the son of Kausika.

In this way, Indra himself was born as the son of Kusika, as Gadhi. The queen of the king Kusika was the daughter of Purukulsa and Gadhi was born out of her womb.

Satyavati was the name of the virtuous daughter of Gadhi, the king Gadhi had married Satyavati to Rishika the son of Bhrgu.

Rcikathu of Bhrguvamsa the husband of Satyavati getting pleased with his wife made Caru for getting a son each for his wife and Gadhi, which could produce a son.

Then Rishikathu husband of Satyavati who belonged to Brhguvahsa, called for Satyavati and asked her to make use of the Caru and the other part of the Cam should be given to her mother for her use.

The son your mother would get, would be the best of Ksatriyas, besides being illustrious and invineible from the ksatriyas in the world.

O virtuous lady, the Cam meant for you will also bestow you with a son, who would be quite strong, ascetic and the best of the Brahmanas.

Richika - the son of Bhrgu who always remained engaged in tapas, thus speaking to his wife went to the forest for the performing of tapas.

At the sametime, the king Gadhi together with his wife while on pilgrimage arrieved at the hermitage of the sage Richika in order to meet his daughter.

Then Satyavati carrying both the types of Caru and placed them before her mother.

As luck would have it, the mother gave away the Caru meant for her to her daughter Satyavati and the Cam meant for her daughter was consumed by the mother only due to ignorance.

Then Satyavati held in her womb the jiva of the one who could destroy the race of ksatriyas and which looked cruel because of the lustre of its body.

Observing the lustre, the Rishi could realise the truth of the mother by means of his divine sight. Then Richika, the best of the Rishis, said to his wife with beautiful limbs.

“O auspicious one, your mother has cheated you. Because of the exchange of the Caru, your son would be extremely cruel, harsh and performer of harsh deeds, while you brother would be a great ascetic and form of Brahman. I, with the use of my tapas had infused all the knowledge in him.

At these words of her husband, the immensely virtuous Sarasvati, pleasing her husband spoke to him, “My son should not be such a degraded Brahmana.” At this her husband said to her.

“O virtuous one, because of the parents the son performs the evil deeds. I had never desired of a son of harsh temperament, but because of your carelessness, the two Cams have been interchaged. Therefore the son to be born would be like the one spoken by me. At this Satyavati again said.

«O sage, in case you so desire, you can create all the three worlds again? then what to speak of a son? You better bestow on me a simplistic son.

О lord, о best of the Brahmanas, in case you are unable to reverse this, then let my grand son be of cruel temperament.”

Then the sage gazed her with his tapas and said, “O auspicious one, I do not feel any difference in the son and the grandson. Therefore things would move as desired by you.”

Thereafter Satyavati produced Jamadagni, of the Bhrgu race, who was devoted to tapas, controlled all his sense organs and was incarnation of humility.

The sage Rcika of Bhrgu race, had adored the gods in earlier times and because of the same and inspite of the inter change of the two Cams which were the amsas of Rudra as well as Visnu, the sage Jamadagni of peaceful nature was born.

Satya was a noble soul who always followed the dhrma of truth. The same was known subsequently by the name of the river Kausiki. (37)

There was a king named Renu in the Iksavaku dynasty. Renuka was his virtuous daughter, and was also known by the name of Kamali.

Out of the womb of Renuka or Kamali, the learned Jamadagni — the son of Rcika produced a son named Parasurama who was of extremely harsh temperament. He was well versed in all types of knowledge besides the science of archery and was the destroy of Ksatriya race. He was illustrious like the burning fire.

In this way the sage Rcika — also known by the name of Aurava, with the strength of his tapas, produced from the womb of' his wife Satyavatl, the immensely glorious son, Jamadagni, who was the best among those who know Brahman and possessed a great fame.

The middle son of Rcika known as Sunahsepa and his youngest son Sunahpuccha are well known, on the other hand the king Gadhi, the son of Kusika, got Visvamitra as his son, who had been a great ascetic, learned and peaceful. He achieving the position of a Brahmarsi was installed among the Saptarsis.

The virtuous Visvamitra was also known by the name of Visvaratha. He was born as son of Gadhi, of Kusika race, by the grace of the sage Rcika of Bhrgu race. He was the one who expanded his race.

Visvamitra is said to have a large number of sons including Devarat and others, who were well known in the three worlds. You listen to their names.

Their names were, Devabhava, Katyayana gotra’s founder Kati and Hiranyaksa. All the three of them were born of the womb of Satavaii. His second wife was known as Renu who gave birth to Renuman, Sankrti, Galaba, Mudgala, Madhuchhanda, Jaya and Devala. Astaka (was the son of Drsadvati or Madhavi). Besides Kacchapa and Harita were also the sons of Visvamitra.

О king, Besides, Visvamitra also had the sons named Panin, Babhru, Dhyanajopya, Parthiva, Devarat, Salankayana, Vaskala, Lohita, VamabhUta, YamadUta, Karisu, Sausruta, Kausika, Saindhavayana Devala, Renu,Yajnavalkya, Aghamarsana, Audu- mbara, Abhisnata, Tarakayana, Chunchuka, salanatya, Hiranyaksa Sankrtya, Galava and Badarayani. besides others.

The number of Branhmanas of Kansiha gotra, is quite large, They can be considered fit for matrimonial alliances with other families. О king a relationship was develop between the sage Paurva and Brahmarsi Kausika’s families. In these races the matrimonial relationships are established between the Brahmanas and the ksatri- yas.

Sunahsepa is considered to be the eldest son of Visvamitra. Though Sunahsepa was born in Bhrgu’s race, but he was treated as of Kausika gotra.

It is said that Sunahsipa was brought in the Yajna of Hariscandra as the sacrifical animal and at the same time he was treated as the son of Visvamitra. The gods handed over Sunahsepa in the hands of Visvamitra. Besides he was handed over by the gods, he came to be known as Devarat.

Visvamitra had at that point of time seven sons including Devarat. Astaka was also his son born of Drsadvati.

Lauhi was the son of Astaks. Thus I have described the race of Janhu. Thereafter, I shall describe the race of Mahatma Ayu.{58)

Here ends Chapter 27, of Harivansa Parva of the khilabhaga of Mahabharata of the Harivansa Purana, relating to the description of the family of Amavasu, the second son of Pururava besides birth of Visvamitra and Parasara. (Vrs. 1-58, P.T.= 1440)
