Description of Yaduvamsa, birth of Kartavirya and story of all the five sons of Yayati

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, Yadu had five god like sons known as Sahasrad, Payoda, Krastu, Nila and Anjika.

О king, Sahasradu had three virtuous sons known as Haiheya, Haya and Venuhaya.

Dharmanetra was the son of Haiheya. Dharmanetra’s son was Karta, who had a son named Sahanjaya.

A city named Sahirhjani was established by the king Sahanjeya. Mahisman was the son of Sahanjaya, laid the foundation of the city of Mahismati. '*

The glorious Bhadrasrenya was the son of Mahisman, who is said to be the lord of the city of Varanasi you have already been enlightened about the glory of Bhadrasrenya.

Durdama was the son of Bhadasrenya, who happened to be the famous king of the earth. Kanaka was the son of Durdama, who was quite intelligent as well as valorous.

Kanaka had four sons, who were well known the world over and were known by the names of Krtavlrya, Krtanja, Krtavarma and Krtagni, who was the fourth son. Arjuna was born of Krtavlrya.

Having a thousand arms, Arjuna, became the king of the seven islands. He alone was glorious like the sun and with the use of his chariots, he conquered the entire world.

Kartviraja Arjuna, after performing hard tapas for ten thousand years meditated upon Dattatreya the son of Atri.

Dattatreya bestowed four boons on him. Initially he had asked for a boon that he should had a thousand arms in the battle field.

The second boon was that when ever he indulged in evil ways then he should be stopped in so doing by the noble persons. As a third boon he had desired that he should conquer the earth in war and should rule the people pleasing them at the same time.”

According to the fourth boon, he desired that he, after waging many wars, killing thousand of enemies, should meet his end from a great warrior who be more powerful than himself.”

О son of Bharata, while engaged in war, he developed a thousand arms, by indication alone.

The king Arjuna, had conquered the entire earth, including islands, oceans, ports and cities by waging wars.

О Janamejaya, the king performed seven Yajnas in the seven islands appropriately. This is what has been heard by us.

All the Yajnas were completed by Aijuna, after giving enough of daksina. The sacrificial pillars of gold were installed in all the Yajnas. The sacrificial places were also made of gold.

О great king, all the gods, Gandharvas and Apsaras always graced the Yajnas.

Feeling surprised at the glory of the Yajnas of Kartavlrya, Narada the son of Gandharva Varidasa, had recited the relevant story.

Narada said — The other kings, cannot be reach the high stage (perfection) of the king Kartavirya, in the performing of the Yajna, charities, tapas, prowess and the use of weapons.

He was a Yogi. Because of this he appeared wandering in all the seven islands holding the sword, shield, bow arrow, mounting over the chariot.

With a religious bent of mind the protected the people and because of the influence of Kartavirya, no one’s riches were stolen or wasted. No one ever felt any grief nor was anyone even confused.

He ruled as a Cakravarti enperor for eighty five thousand years possessing all types a diamonds.

The king Kartavirya being a Yogi protected the fields and the Yajnas and he turned himself as a cloud in the rainy season.

As the sun looks graceful with his thousand rays during the winter season, similarly the skin of the king Kartavirya had hardened with the rubbing of the cord of the bow. He appeared graceful with his thousand hands.

The immensely illustrious Kartavirya conquered the sons of Karkotaka Naga had rehabilituted them in the city of Mahismati.

The lotus eyed Kartvirya, while engaged in the water sports during the rainy season pushed backwards the forceful flow of water with the use of his hands.

Decorated with the garlands of the water foam in the river Narbada when the flow of water was pushed back by him, while sporting, then the rivers Narbada, together with the wavering water waves, moved ’ towards the ocean, like the woman, having been enjoyed by the other man, returns with a doubtful mind.

Entering the great ocean, the threw his thousand arms, which disturbed the oceanic water and the great Daityas of nether worlds, becoming motionless, hid themself out of terror.

When the king Arjuna, with the use of his thousand arms, churned the oceanic waters, its high waves were shattered completely. The big fish and other aquatic animals started floundering. The sea foam striking with waves rising high with wind of the hands of Arjuna, with the appearing of the whirlpools, the ocean looked quite terrible. The conditions that were created with the throw of the mountain Mandara- cala the ocean of milk, the same conditions were created by his arms while churning the ocean.

Then the mountain, apprehensive of the churning of the ocean again, feeling surprised, besides the huge serpants, expecting the emergence of the nectar again suddenly jumped and looked at the oceans expectantly. But on finding the gigantic Kartavlrya, they lowered their heads, becoming motionless like stone. As with the blowing of the wind during the evening time the plantain tree starts shaking, similarly the wind produced with the movement of his body all the Nagas were shaken.

The king Kartavlrya had made the arrogant Ravana — the king of Lanka unconscious with the shooting of arrows, defeating him and binding him with the cord of his bow, with his army. He imprisoned Ravana bringing him in the city of Mahismati.

Learing about the imprisonment of his grand son Ravana, the sage Pulastya himself reached the city of Mahimati and met Arjuna. At the request of Pulastya, Arjuna, released Ravana the grand son of the sage.

The staratching of the card of the bow of Arjuna, created such a terrific sound, which resembled the thindering sound of the clouds of the time of dissolution or the thandering sound of vajra.

Graceful is the powers of Parasurama of Bhrgu race, who cut off the thousand arms of Kartavlrya like the forest of tala trees.

Once lord Agni who was hungry and thirsty begged alrms from Kartavlrya, then the valorous king gave away in charity all the seven islands, cities, villages, cattlesheds and his entire kingdom to the fire god in charity. The fire god went in flames every where and with the influence of the strength of Kartavlrya, he started burning all the forest and the mountains.

With the help of Kartavlrya, feeling panicky, the fire god also burnt out the pleasent asrama of the son of Varuna, like the other forests.

In earlier times, the illustrious son who had been achieved by Varuna, was known by the name of Vasistha and was also known by the name of Apava.

The desired hermitage of the sage Vasistha had been burnt out, therefore the majestic Apava, pronounced a curse on Arjuna in anger, “O Haiyaya, you have burnt my pleasent forest, therefore, the global victory that has been achieved by you, shall be destroyed by someone, more powerful than you, defeating you at the same time.

The valorous and glorious Purasurama - the son of Jamadagni is an ascetic Brahmana. He belongs to the race of Bhrgu and he shall Churn you with force, cutting off all your thousand arms and kill you at the same time.

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya — the destroyer of the enemies, with the influence of the king Kartavirya who ruled the people with a religious bent of mind, the riches of no one were destroyed.

О king of Kuruvansa, with the curse pronouced by the sage Vasistha, the king Kartavirya, met with his end at the hands of Parasurama. Actually he himself had desired such a boon earlier (from Brahma).

The great Kartavirya had a hundred sons, out of whom only five could remain alive. All of them were well-versed in the use of arms, valorous, warriors, virtuous and glorious.

They were known by the names of Siirasena, Sura, Dhrsta, Krishna and Jaydhvaja. Out of them Jayadhvaja was the king of Avanti country.

All the sons of Kartavirya were quite strong and great warrior Talajaigha was the son of Jayadhvaja.

Talajanga had a hundred sons, who came to be known in the world by the same name. О great king, in the race of Haihyas, the Ksatriyas like Vltihotra, Sujata, Bhoja, Avanti, Tarundikara, Talajangha and Bharata were born. Their number is quite large and as such their names have not been specified separately. О king, several of the auspicious Yadavas like Vrsa and others were also born on the earth.

Out of them Vrsa was the founder of the dynasty. Madhu was the son of Vrsa. Madhu had a hundred sons out of them Vrsna was the founder of the race.

The tradition of progeny started from Vrstia, under whom all the Ksatriyas were called Vrsni. Similarly in the name of Yadu, people of his dynasty came to be known as Yadavas. The people of the race of Madhu came to be known as Madhavas. The future generations of Haihyas came to be known as Haiyahs.

Whosoever recites or listens the story of Kartavira Arjuna, his riches never decline and his lost belongings are also restored to him.

O lord of the people, in this way the world renowned warrior Yayati’s dynasties of his five sons have been described. О great king, as the five bhUtas dwell in the bodies of mobiles as well as the immobiles, similarly the five dynasties are spread in the world.

Listening to the details of origin of these five Vamsas a king becomes aware of dharma, artha and other lithvas. He exercises control over all his five sense organs and exercises control over his sons as well.

О son of Bharata, by listening to the stories of these five dynasties, one gets the useful boons of long life, glory, sons riches and land, which are difficult to be achieved.

О Rajendra, now you listen to the excellent Krostavarhsa which is related to the enormous efforts. The king Krastu belonged to the race of Yadu, performer of Yajnas as well as the performer of the auspicious deeds. By listening to the story of his dynasty, a person is relieved of all his sins. The king Krostu is the same, in who dynasty, the omniscent lord had incarnated in the form of Krishna.

Here ends Chapter 33 of the Harivansa Parva of khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the description of the Yaduvanfa, birth of Kartavirya and the story of the five sons of Yayati.(Vrs.1-62, P.T.= 1823)
