Entry of Krishna in Mathura and the breaking of the bows

Vaishampayana spoke: О Janamejaya, all the illustrious travellers, then yoking the excellent chariot, accompanied with Shri Krishna and Balarama, reached the city of Mathura which was protected by Kamsa.

In the evening time, when the sun had become red all of them entered the pleasent city of Mathura. The intelligent Akriira, Shri Krishna who was shining like the sun, besides Balarama were taken by Akriira at his own residence.

Both the brothers at that time were shining with the best of the lustre. At that point of time Akrura — the lord of chariots said to them, “Both of you should not be anxious to go to the abode of Vasudeva, presently.

Because of you, the aged Vasudeva has been driven out from his abode and you should not stay here as well,” speaking thus he scolded them both daily.

Therefore, for your comfort, some other place should be arranged. You should act in such a way which is beneficial to your parents.

Then Shri Krishna said to Akriira, “O religious minded great warrior, and a noble person, in case you agree, then we both the brothers, viewing the city of Mathura and its kingsway, leave this place and reach the abode of Kamsa in an unexpected way.”

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, Akriira also, with a delighted heart, bowing in reverance to the eternal Shri Krishna went to Kamsa.

With the permission of Akriira, both Balarama and Shri Krishna, with the intention of sight seeing started from that place in a manner as the two elephants, desirous of a fight on getting free from the bondage from the pillars.

On the way, they met with a washerman who was colouring the clothes. Meeting him, both the brothers, begged some clothes from him.

Then the washerman said to them, “Wherefrom have you arrived, О forest dwellers? Foolish boys you are demanding the royal clothes.

I colour the clothes of the king Kamsa, which are made in various countries and colour them as per their specific desire.

Whose sons are both of you? You are born in the forest and have been brought up with the forest animals. Finding the colourful clothes today, you have became desirous for the same.

It is quite surprising. It appears, that you have became unmindful about your lives and because of the same you have arrived here. Both of you are fools. Your wisdom is like the uncivilised people and because of the same, you have become desirous of the royal costumes.”

On hearing this Shri Krishna was enraged at the words of the foolish, and unfortunate washerman, who spoke poisonous words.

He therefore slapped him over his face, which struck him like Vajra. With the single slap, the head of the washerman was broken and he fell down dead on the ground.

At the death of the washerman, his wives started crying and lamenting went to the court of the king Kamsa.

Both the brothers, on the other hand, were clad in beautiful garments and for getting the flower garlands went into a street, where the garlands were sold. It appeared as if two intoxicated elephants had arrived getting attracted with the fragrance of the flowers.

In the same street, their lived as gardener, who was well known by the name Gunaka. He talked sweetly. Several of the flower garlands decorated his shop besides being rich, he was quite handsome as well.

Then Shri Krishna, with the desire of having some garlands spoke* to the gardener, in sweet voice, “You give garlands to both of us.”

The gardener, whose livelihood was the garlands, gave away several garlands to both of them with delight. Both of them had a handsome outlook. Then the gardener said to them, “All the garlands belong to you.”

Shri Krishna was immensely pleased at the words of the gardener. With a pleasent mind he granted a boon to the gardener, "0 pleasent one, with my delight, the goddess Laksmi would shower enormous riches on you.”

Having been granted the boon, the gardener, with a peaceful mind bowed in reverence to him. Then he placed his head over the feet of Shri Krishna and received the boon with grace.

The gardener at that point of time thought both of them to be Yaksas. But feeling panickly from Kamsa, he gave no reply.

Thereafter on the road, Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, came across Kubja — the hunch backed who carried the fragant paste in her hand, kept in a vase.

Finding her, Krishna said to her, «O lotus eyed Kubja, for whom are you carrying this paste. You speak out quickly.” On hearing this Kubja smilingly stood before them. She could move with the speed of lightening. Then she spoke to the lotus eyed Shri Krishna in deep voice.

“О valorous one with lotus eyes and the pleasent face, I am going to the bath room of the king. In case you need the fragrance paste, you can have it. I feel immesely attracted towards you at your very sight. You accept the fragrance paste of your liking, I have stopped here for your sake. Let you meet with welfare. You come to my house. You are the lord of my heart.

О pleasent one, where from have you arrived? Don’t you know me? I am the loving salve girl of the king Kamsa. He has entrusted me the job of supplying the fragrance paste.”

Then Shri Krishna smilingly said to Kubja, “O damsel with pleasent face, you give the fragrance paste for both of us. We are wrestlers and have arrived here as the guests of the country. We have arrived here to have a look at the gigantic bow here.

Then Kubja said to Krishna, ”You are quite a loving person in my eyes. Therefore you accept this fragrant paste meant for royal use, from me peacefully.”

By applying the paste over their limbs, both the brothers looked quite graceful. At that time it appeared as if the two bulls after dipping in the Yamuna water, had rubbed mud over their bodies, and were walking over the road.

There after Shri Krishna, well aware of the divine sports, using two fingers of his hand, pushed the hunch of Kubja from the middle, as a result of which her body was straightened up.

Finding that her hunch had been straightened up, Kubja attained beautiful form and developed limbs, wearing a serene smile over her face she started laughing in delight. Her breast had been developed and raised up and she appeared graceful like a creeper climbing over a log of wood or a tree.

Then she getting intoxicated spoke to Shri Krishna quite lovingly, “O loving one, where will you go now? I stopped you. You stay here and accept me.

Krishna laughed on hearing this. Thereafter both the divine brothers looking at each other with delight, started laughing while clapping. Kubja had heard their praise with her own ears, at length.

Shri Krishna, smilingly left Kubja there, who had become passionate with love. Getting free from her, both the brothers, entered the royal palaces.

When both the brothers who were born and brought up in Braj as cowherds, entered the royal palace, and all their activities at that point of time were concealed. Their facial expressions did not reveal their inner feelings.

Both the brothers reached the chamber of the bow like the two lions, born in the Himalaya. No one was expecting their arrival there at that time.

They intended to have a look at the old bow, which lay there decorated with garlands. Therefore, both the valorous boys enquired from the attendents guarding the place.

“О guards of Kamsa, protecting the bow of the king Kamsa, you listen to the words of both of us, which is the bow, for which the celebrations are going on here? In case you be willing, then let us see the bow, which is going to be the main cause of the festival here.

The guard then showed the bow which was thick like the pillar. It was impossible for anyone of the gods or even Indra, to break it or even to string it.

The valorous and lotus eyed Shri Krishna, lifed up the bow and measured it with both hands.

The bow which was adorned by the Daityas, measuring it as per his will, lord Krishna, bent it several times and strung it. Because of its too much bending by Shri Krishna, the bow which was decorated with flower garlands, resembling a serpent, broke from the middle into two parts.

After breaking the excellent bow the young Krishna and Balarama, rushed out of the chamber with great speed.

The thundering sound produced with the breaking of the bow, resembled the sound produced by the voilent storm. The entire inner apartment of Kariisa was shaken and the thundering sound echoed in all the directions.

Coming out of the chamber of weapons, both the brothers, went and joined the cowherds who had arrived from Braj. On the other hand, the guard of the weapons chamber became nervious and rushed to the royal court with great speed. Reaching before the king, getting surprised like a crow, breathing heavily, he spoke thus.

“O great king, I want to tell you something, which you please listen attentively. In the chamber of the bow, an astonishing event has happened, which would appear like the dissolution of the universe.

Two humans arrived there who were beyond comparison. The hair of their heads were quite long like tufts. One of them was clad in blue garments and the other was wearing the yellow costumes. The body of one of them was plastued with yellow paste while the other had applied the white paste over the body. Both of them could take to any form at will. They suddenly entered the inner *appartment without being noticed by any one.

Both the valorous persons looked like the divine princes. Their bodies had a pleasent look. It appeared as if the fire taking to the form of boys had descended on earth from the heaven and had been standing in the chamber of bow. I have visualised them clearly.

The eyes of one of then were beautiful like the lotus flowers. His body was of dark complexion. His costumes and garlands were of yellow colour. The bow which could hardly be lifted even by the gods, the same bow was lifted up by him with ease without making any effort what so ever.

The boy lifting up the bow quite easily forcefully strung it and started bending playfully.

The stong armed boy, when stretched the bow, then it broke into two pieces with a thundering sound.

With the sound produced by the breaking of the bow, the earth was shaken. The lustre of the sun was faded out, while the sky looked like rotating.

Witnessing the great and astonishing event, I felt extremely surprised and getting apprehensive of danger from the terrific enemies, I have arrived here to convey the news to you.

О great monarch, I know not, who were the immensely valorous persons. One of them was of white complexion resembling the mount KaUasa, while the other was of dark complexion resermbling the mountain of collyrium.

After breaking the bow of the size of the pillar of elephant, which was quite solid, the immensely valorous warrior, together with his associate, moving with the speed of the wind disappeared from there. О Naresvara, who was he, I am not aware of.

Kamsa had known all the happening in detail. On hearing the news of the breaking of the bow, he relieved the guard of the chamber of weapons and he himself entered his own abode.

Here ends chapter — 27, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahdbhdrata, relating to the entry of Shri Krishna in Mathura and the breaking of the bow. CVrs. 1-62, P.T. = 4318)
