Indra adores Krishna and honours him





Vaisariipayana said: О Janamejaya, when Indra found, that Shri Krishna had lifted up Govardhana, and protected Gokula, then he was immensely surprised. Then he developed a desire to have a look Shri Krishna.

Indra then mounted over the elephant Auravata, who was white like waterless clouds, arrived on earth.

Indra, who was known by various names, on his arrival on earth, found Shri Krishna, who could perform several tasks with ease, was seated over a stone slab.

Lord Visnu, who had been resplendent with his lustre taking to the form of a cowherd known as BalaKrishna was spotted by Indra with delight.

Finding Shri Krishna having the beautiful complexion of the blue lotus, adorned with Shrivatsa mark, Indra got the reward of his eyes. He continued looking at him Fixing his gaze on him for long.

Finding that resplendent Krishna, even after living on earth was seated comfor­tably with ease, Indra felt shameful.

While lord Hari was so seated there, Garuda, spreading his wings was providing shade to him.

The valorous Indra, descarding his elephant, discending from it, appeared before lord Krishna in the lonely place, in order to serve him.

Reaching close to Shri Krishna, Indra adorned with the garland of divine flowers, looked quite graceful, holding a Vajra in his hand.

The Kirita — crown, which had the lustre of the sun, the two ear rings, always adorned his head, which appeared graceful.

His chest was decorated with such a garland in which five bunches of flowers were hanging. His resplendence resembled the blossomed lotus flowers. He had a thousand eyes, which decorated his body. He could take to any form at will. He was looking at Shri Krishna, with his thousand eyes.

He spoke with the voice, which was used to issue command, like the thunder of clouds, and was divine besides being sweet, to lord Krishna.

Indra said — О Krishna, Krishna, Mahag- bahu (long armed one) you are the one who enhances the delight of the people of his own community. Having your mind filled with love for the cows, the deed performed by you is quite divine.

Inspite of the clouds of the time of dissolution, having been released by me, your protection of the cows has pleased me. I am extremely satisfied.

With the application of Svayambhuva yoga you have held the mountain like your own abode, who will not get surprised with this deed performed by you?

О Shri Krishna, the festival in my honour which was in vogue for long has been put an end to by cows for seven nights pouring excessive rains.

You have sustained the terrific rains. It was difficult for the gods or the Danavas to face these rains, or to stop them.

О Shri Krishna, this is an astonishing event has happened, which has been liked by me. It is quite pleasing for me, that you inspite of your having a human form, preserve the Vaisnava lustre in you and you exhibit it only when you are enraged.

Inspite of your having the human body, you still preserve in you the Vaisnava glory.Therefore, I feel that task of the gods is as good as having been established. No one can now harm us.

When you are the leader of the gods, and are the foremost in all activities, then all our tasks would be established and we shall be successful in our aims. No harm can come to us.

О lord, you alone are the protector of all the gods and the universe, I do not find anyone as your equal, who could be able to shoulder the responsibility of protecting the gods.

As the best of bullock is yoked ahead of all for the carrying of the load, similarly, you are the foremost in relieving the gods from the miseries. Garuda, the king of birds is known to be your vehicle.

О Shri Krishna, this is the worldly creation, and is lodged in your body. Brahma has merely indicated about the same. As the gold is the best in all the metals, similarly you are the best of all the gods.

Even the selfbom, lord Brahma, with the application of his wisdom, or his age, can not follow or compete with you, as a lame person cannot follow the healthy person, or cannot walk with him.

Himalaya is the best of all the mountains, the ocean is the best of all the tanks, Garuda is the best of all the birds, while you happen to be the best of all the gods.

The Jalaloka is the last of all and the mountains float over it. The earth is lodged over the Nagas, and the humans live on the earth.

The sky is over the Manusyaloka (the world), while the birds move in the sky. The sun filled with rays is lodged above the sky, which is considered to be the gateway of the heaven.

There is a great loka above the sun, which is meant for the gods, where one can reach by plane only. О Krishna, I have been establish there as Indra.

Brahmaloka, is lodged above the heaven, which is served by Brahmarsis. The moon, the planets as well as the stars can reach there.

Goloka is lodged above the Brahmaloka, which is inhibited by the sadhyas. О Shri Krishna, the said loka is omnipresent and is lodged in the greater sky.

Your movement of darkness is the highest of all, there. Inspite of our persistent enquiries from Brahma — the Grandsire, we could know nothing about you.

The terrific Nagaloka is located as the lowest of all the lokas. That region by the sinful people. Those who are active by naturs, for them the earth has been earmarked. This is the land of activities.

Those who are unable or those who move like the wind, the sky is the refuge for them. Those who possess bliss, selfrestraint, and get engaged in the auspicious deeds, heaven is the abode for them.

Those who perform tapas for Brahman, Brahmaloka is meant for them. The Goloka is achieved by the cows alone and is beyond the reach of others.

О valorous Krishna, presently because of my pouring rain on earth, the world of the cows, has became miserable. The patient and noble soul like you have saved the cows from the miserable condition.

Therefore, О greatful one, I have arrived here at the advice of Brahma as well as the wishfulfilling cows. I have also been inspired to arrive here, because of the honour of you, I preserve in my mind, has inspired me to arrive here.

О Sr! Krishna, I am Indra the lord of all the bhutas (gods), who had been given the position of an elder brother, from the womb of Aditi, in earlier times.

О lord, you kindly forgive me for displaying before you my own glory in divine form. You kindly forgive me for this sin.

О Shri Krishna, you are the powerful like an elephant, becoming pleasant by nature, besides being merciful, you kindly listen from me the words spoken by Brahma as well as the cows.

Lord Brahma as well as the celestial cows of the sky have given a message that, “we are extremely happy for the protection of cows by you besides the other divine deeds performed by you.

The protection you have provided to the cows, has protected the Goloka, because we are increasing with your bulls and their progeny, day by day.

We the cows bestow all the desired wishes. Now we shall produce powerful bullocks, which could be used in the bullock cards or for the purpose of ploughing the fields. With the production of the milk and ghee, we shall please the gods, when the offering are made in the sacrifice. We shall please Laksmi, with our cowdung.

O lord, 0 valorous lord, by protecting us you are our preceptor. Therefore, henceforth, you will be Indra for the cows.

Therefore, you perform abhiseka with the divine water carried by me in my hands filled in the vases of gold.

I am Indra of the gods, and you are Indra of the cows. Henceforth, all the people will adore you by the name of Govinda.

O Shri Krishna, you the Parmesvara have been established as Indra over me. Therefore the gods will remember you also by the name of Upendra and recite your glory accordingly.

The four months which have been prescribed for my adoration, the winter season — its later part, is being bestowed by me on you.

During the two months of Sravana - Bhadrapada, will be earmarked for me. The later part (of the rainy season.) as a mark of the conclusion of half portion of the rainy season, as a mark of the conclusion of the period of Indra, my flag shall be established. Thereafter you shall be adored. During that period the peacocks shall descard the pride emanating from the rainy season.

Their cries (peacock’s) will be reduced and their intoxication will disappear. The other creatures who thunder at the sight of the clouds, thinking (of the lapse) of my time would became peaceful.

During the rainy season itself the sungod with a thousand rays, heating up the world with their sunshine, shall move to the southern direction, which was served by the sage Agastya as well as Trisahku.

Thereafter at the end of the winter season, the peacock shall become desirous of remaining quite, the sparrow hawks, would become desirous of water, the floating of the boats in the river waters would stop (or there would be no floods in the rivers.) the river banks would be crowded with swans and cranes, the intoxicated birds would indulge in sports. The bulls getting intoxicated would wander about, the cows filled with delight would yield more milk, after pouring the rain water the clouds would disappear, the sky would shine like the weapons or world would become clear, the swans would roam about eveiywhere, the stepwells and the tanks would be filled with the blossoming lotus flowers, as a result of which the spledour would increase, they would become beautiful, the water of all the tanks would be cleaned, the (flowers) beds would be neatly arranged in the fields, looking black, in which the tender shoots of the paddy looking yellow, would hang on, the rivers would flow with their water in the middle, the boundaries of the villages, with the rising beautiful crops, would look charming attracting the minds even of the ascetics and sages. As the end of the rains, the earth with many countries, would appear charming. The well demarcated paths would look appealing. The grass, the creepers and Osadhls would start yielding fruits. At places the crops of sugarcane would be filled with fresh green leaves. The yajhas would be started, when lord Visnu, wakes up from sleep, then the virtuous winter season would start.

О Shri Krishna, on the arrival of the winter season, like the heaven, the people dwelling on ear±, would adore me and Upendra (you) carrying flags with sticks.

Such of the people, who would bow in revenace to both of us in festival of Mahendraupendra, they shall never have to face injustice.

Thereafter Indra who was well versed in yoga, picked up the divine pitchers filled with the auspicious water of Mandakird, consecrated lord Krishna over the position of Govinda.

Finding that Shri had been established over the position of Govinda, the herds of cows, with bulls, dropping the streams of milk from their udders, performed the abhiseka of lord Krishna with the milk from udders.

The clouds also, thereafter, poured the rain of nectar, with which Krishna bathed, and completed the ceremony of abhiseka.

All the branches of the Osadhis then started pouring white and nectar like milk. The gods dropped the rain of flowers. The divine musical instruments were sounded in the sky.

Thereafter all the ascetics well versed in the mantras offered prayer to Shri Krishna. The earth highlighted her form which she had achieved after her separation from the ocean.

The water of all the seven oceans were purified. They blew for the welfare of the universe. The sun-god lighted the world moving over its rightful path. The moon looked glorious with the stars and the constellations.

The exess in all the fields were neutralised. The conducts of all the rulers were devoid of the enmity. The trees blossomed with flowers and they appeared excellent with fresh and tender shoots.

The elephant started emitting the fluid to ease out. The deer and other animals in the forest, felt pleased. The mountain looked graceful with the trees and the different metals found on them.

The entire world became comfortable like the heaven as if it were pleased with nectar juice. In this way, having been installed using the divine necter like the water the ceremony of installation of Krishna was completed.

Having been enthroned by the cows, wearing the divine garlands and the divine costumes, the eternal Govinda, was addressed by Indra, thus.

«O Krishna, I have apprised you of the first reason of my arrival here, obeying the command of the cows. Now you listen to the other reason of my arrival here.

What I have to say is that you please kill Kariisa as well the demon KesI, who is degraded of all the steed. You kill also Aristasura. Thereafter you rule the kings.

My arhsa has been born from KuntI, the sister of your father, who resembles me.

You should save and respect him and take him as your friend.

Getting grateful from you, he would follow your instructions. Following your command, he would earn enormous glory in the world.

He would be the best archer of the Bharata dynasty. He would behave as per your wishes and he would never be happy without you.

The war of Mahabharata would depend on you as well the son of Kuntl. The evil kings would be killed by both of you.

О Krishna, during my talk with the Rishis and the gods I have already annouced that Kuntl has produced a son from me, who has been named as Arjuna.

He is well versed in the use of arms and is the best archer, the rulers fighting with the use of arms would be killed by him.

He alone would destroy several aksauhni army in the war.

О lord, except you, there is no other god or the ruler of earth, would not be able face of the attack of Arjuna. Because of his superiority in archery, no one would be able to face him.

О Govinda, at the time of war, Arjuna would be your true friend and relative. At my instance, you should educate him in spiritual knowledge.

You should own Arjuna in the same way, and look at him with the same vision with which you look at me. You honour him daily. You are well aware of the entire universe. Therefore you take good care of Arjuna.

On the accasions of the terrific battles, you should regularly protect him. The death should not be able to exercise her influence on Arjuna, when he would be protected by you.

О Krishna, you consider Arjuna to be my form alone, also accept me to be your own, by your heart, as if I am always your soul. Similarly Arjuna should also be treated by you as your soul.

In earlier times, you had measured the tree lokas with your three steps and excercised control over them, defeating Bali the demon king. Then taking me to be your elder brother, you declared me as the king of gods.

You are truthful and you were adored by the truthful yajha. Since you are truthful therefore the gods take refuge with you with truthful minds. They then make you destroy their enemies.

Му son, known by the name of Arjuna, happens to be the son of the sister of your own father. Becoming friendly with you, he would establish a complete understanding with you.

О Krishna irrespective of his waging a war, or when he is located at his place, you should alway bear his burden in all situations. During the time of war you shall have to bear the burden of his protection.

О Krishna nothing is invisible from your sight because you are fully aware of the future happenings. After the killing of Kamsa at your hands, then there is going to be a war of rulers which would arrive from far and near.

In the said war, Arjuna, over powering the extraordinary rulers, would be victorious and you would earn enormous grace and honour.

О Shri Krishna, you are infallible from your glory, in case, I together with all the gods and the truth are dear to you, then whatever has been submitted by me before you, all related tasks should be accomplished by you.”

Listening to the words spoken by Indra, Krishna who has been designated as Govinda, replied with his mind full of delight.

“O Deva, О Sakra, the beloved of Sachi, I feel delighted at the mere andience with you. Whatever has been desired by you shall be surely accomplished by me, without exception.

The noble feelings about me, preserved by you are well known to me. I am aware of the birth of Arjuna. Kunti — the wife of Pandu and my father’s sister, is well known to me.

I am also acquacinted with Yudhisthira, who was born of Dharma by Kunti. Bhima who had been born of the wind god form Kunti, my father’s sister, is also well known to me.

The two sons named Nakula and Sahadeva, who were born of the two Asvini Kumaras, from the wombs of Madri, are also well known to me.

With the union of the Sun god with Kunti, my paternal aunt (Bud) during virginity and after his birth, when he was brought by the Suta — family, known by the name of Kama is also well known to me. I am well aware of the sons of Dhrtarastra, who were always desicrous of war.

The death of the king Pandu as a result of the curse, pronounced on him, is also not unknown to me.

Therefore, О Indra, the lord of gods, you can go back to the heaven for the pleasure of the gods. No enemy of Arjuna would be able to defeat him, when I am there.

At the conclusion of the Mahabharata war, for the sake of Arjuna alone, I shall return all the Pandvas, hale and hearty to Kunti — my father’s sister.

О Devendra, getting bound with the bondage of love of Arjuna your son, I shall act as per his wishes like an obedient servant.

Listening the pleasent and truthful words of lord Krishna, Indra — the lord of gods, retired to heaven.
