Killing of Canura, Mastika and Kamsa and meeting of both the brothers to their parents

Vaishampayana said - О Janamejaya, the lotus eyed Shri Krishna, placing his elder brother Balarama, ahead, rushed to the wrestling groud. At that time, their costumes were fluttering in the air. The elephant tusk had become the mark of identification for him. His arms were quite beautiful. The arms of Shri Krishna, the son of Devaki were soaked in the fiuid and the blood of the elephant as the armlets had been placed around his arms. He jumped like a lion. He roamed about in the wrestling ground, thinking of the method of killing Kamsa, like the clouds in the sky. When he raised the sound with the patting of his arms, the earth shook at the same time. Finding Shri Krishna holding the elephant tusk, the face of the king Kamsa, faded out and he looked at him with anger.

Shri Krishna holding the elephant tusks in his hand, appeared like a mountain peak with a crescent rising from it.

With the arrival of Shri Krishna jumping and dancing, the crowd of the people looking an ocean, appeared as having been filled with delight.

Thereafter, Kariisa, having been filled with rage and red eyes, ordered the wresder Canura who was past master in deceitful wrestling to fight with Shri Krishna. Then Kamsa ordered Mustika having a solid stone like hard body, besides being deceitful to fight with Balarama.

Kamsa had already commanded Canura to fight with Krishna making all the efforts.

Therefore Canura, with his eyes getting red with rags, reached closer to Shri Krishna. He looked at that time as a cloud filled with water.

With the announcement made by Kamsa to all to keep quiet, there was a pin drop silence in the audience. Then the Yadavas who had been steaed there started talking among themselves.

In earlier times the creator had made a rule for the wrestlers that the wrestling should go on in the wrestling ground with the arms only and no weapons should be used in the wrestling fight. For the selection of the two wrestlers some selectors or observors should be arranged. The cowherd persons should not be included in the duel and the opponent should be allowed to be overcome with wrestling and the strength. The opponent should be defeated by these means.

In order to observe the action suitable to the time and for understanding the same, the people should offer water to the wrestlers to remove their fatigue. The wrestlers should be honoured with the dust of the cowdung.

The observers of the wrestling fights have declared that when the wrestler fights with a particular wrestiing trick, over the ground or when one fights while standing the other should also fight accordingly. A single wrestlers should fight with a single opponent.

In case there be a boy, an aged person, or a middle aged person, a weak or a strong person, his opponent should be declared by the people of his own side.

It is prescribed to fight using the bodily strength and the wrestling tricks besides the force of the arms. The person should after dropping the opponent on the ground, he should not be troubled.

The wrestling fight between Shri Krishna and Caniira is presently going on. But Krishna is only a boy at present, while Canura is a wrestler with a huge body. Why is no one thinking about this disparity?

On hearing this, there arose a disturbance in the audience. Then the lord Krishna jumped up and said.

“No doubt, I am a boy and his great wrestlers has a mountain like body. Still, let there be a fight between and us. I would like it.”

There would be no violation of the wrestling rules from my side. I should not defile the rules for wrestling.

The conduct of the wrestlers as prescribed by the elders is to use the cowdung powder as the paste on body, and then wash it with water, apply the paste of ocher colour is the duty of the wrestlers entering the wrestling fold.

То push back the opponent, to stick to one’s position, display of one’s stregth, exercise, not to strike the opponent over the sensitive spot, saving ourselves from the misconduct and display the maximum of one’s strength, are the six methods, when applied in the wrestling ground, judiciously, the victory is ensured. This is the opinion of the stalwarts of the game.

This Chaniira is bent upon turning this sport without enmity into the inimical war, therefore it would be diserable to control him, here itself and by so doing, I would please the entire universe.

This wrestlers named Сапйга was born in the Karusa country. All of you should think over the events performed by him with his deeds and the body.

Не is the one who after throwing his opponent on the ground, killed them in order to establish his suporiourity over them, and has thus defiled the wrestling traditions.

The warriors, who fight with arms, they are considered successful only by tearing out the enemy. But for the wrestlers, it would be enough to throw down the opponent on the ground to display his victory.

Those warriors who are victorious in the war; the weapons, achieve the eternal glory and in case he is killed in the battle ground, even then he achieves heaven.

In the war of weapons, the killer and killed are both are to meet with success, because the journey is the end of life, which has been praised by the great people.

But the path of wrestling sport has emerged from the strength of the body and the related body tricks. Therefore, those who meet with their end in the wresding ground do not achieve the heaven. Or otherwise, how do the winners achieve the comforts?

When some wrestlers have been killed for the increase of the glory of some arrogant kings, they lost their lives because of their own faults and in such cases, the killers also can earn the sin of killing others.”

When Shri Krishna was thus speaking, at the same time the terrific fight started between Shri Krishna and Canura like the two elephants fighting in the forest.

When out of both of them, one twisted the limb of the other, the other at once retabutted and released his limb from the hold of the other. Both of them turned earlier, helpless, by holding the fist of the other. They attacked each other in an astonishing manner. Both of them stopped each other by encircling their arms around them. At times both were entangled with each other and then threw the other with a push at a distance. At times they threw each other on the ground, dragging each other at the same time. At times the one placed on the ground threw the wrestlers above at as distance with force or he stood up carrying him in his arms, churning his limbs at the same time.

Stuck with each other, they looked as if two mountains were fighting with each other. At times both of them pushed back each other and attacking over the chest of the opponent. At times one lifted the other over the shoulder and threw the other down over the ground head on, creating the roars.

At times, they struck heads with the knees, creating sound like the sticking of two tones. In the presence of a huge audience which had gathered to witness the festival, both of them indulged in a terrific fight without any weapon and in which only the strength of arms and bodies was used. All the people were influenced with that fight. All the people of the audience delightfully shouted aloud to enthuse confidence in the winners.

At times both the warriors attacked each other with knees and elbows and at times struck each other with the spreaded fingers of the hands. Some times they fought with their open hands, sometimes they scratched each other’s nose with finger nails. At times they made each other to fall by entangling with the feet. In this way they applied several physical tricks on each other.

Other people occupying the platforms, shouted — “welldone, welldone.” Observing this the body of Kamsa started perspiring. His gaze was fixed at Shri Krishna. With the indication of his left hand, he stopped the playing of the musical instruments.

When Kamsa stopped the playing of the musical instruments, then the gods started playing of the musical instruments in the sky, of their own, and the related sound echoed in the sky.

When the fight was started by Shri Krishna, the musical instruments stated playing of their own and their sound was heard everywhere.

The invisible gods, desirous of the victory of Shri Krishna, together with the Vidyadharas who were roaming about in the sky.

All the seven Rishis assembling in the sky, started saying, «O Krishna, let you be victorious over this wrestler CanUra.

Then lord Krishna — the son of Devaki realising that the time of death of Kariisa was fast approaching, fought with CanUra for long which energised enormous strength in his body.

Then the earth started shaking. The platforms which had been arranged there also started shaking. The excellent gem studded in the crown of Kamsa fell down on earth.

The life of CanUra had already come to an end. Shri Krishna then bent CanUra with both the hands struck his chest with his knees. Then he struck CanUra’s head with a powerful fest.

As a result of this both his eye balls bulged out emitting tears and blood. It appeared as if two gold belles were hanging with the lightening of saddle over the elephant with the rope or the chain.

With the bulging out of the eyes, the life departed out of the body of CanUra, who fell down in the wrestling ground itself.

Then CanUra whose life had came to an end and his body lay there in the wrestling ground which obstructed it like the fall of a mountain.

CanUra who was proud of his strength, was killed and after his killing Balarama the son of Rohini, caught hold of Mustika in the wrestling ground while Krishna caught hold of Tosala.

Both the demons before the start of the fight, under the influence of the destiny were fainted with anger got engaged in fight with Krishna and Balarama. But when both of them were beaten up by Shri Krishna and Balarama, they started shouting in the wrestling ground jumping and running there.

The valorous Krishna lifted Tosala of gigantic size like mountain with his arms, and rotating him a hundred times with his arms threw him on the ground.

Having been so beaten at the hands of Shri Krishna, the demon started vomiting enough of blood from his mouth.

On the other hand the valorous Balarama, fought with Mustika - the wrestler from Andhra - desh, for long and desplayed several wrestling tricks to him.

Then the illustrious warriors administered a powerful fist over the head of Andhra wrestler creating a Vajra — like sound. It appeared as if he had struck a mountain.

With the strike of a fist the head of the Andhra — wrestler was broken and he fell down on the earth. His eyes were bulged out and he was killed by Balarama. There was a great explosion at that time.

After killing both Tosala and the wrestler of Andhardesa, both Balarama and Shri Krishna with their eyes getting red in rage, started jumping in the wrestling ground.

With the killingh of the great wrestlers Canura and Mustika the wrestling ground was devoid of the wrestlers and looked horrible.

All the gopas including Nanda and others who were witnessing the game, felt disturbed in their bodies. But they continued to sit there quietly.

On the other hand Devaki was bitterly shaking with the tears of joy flowing from her eyes and the milk oozing out of her breast in abundance she felt painful, but continued to stare at Shri Krishna.

The eyes of Vasudeva were also filled with the delight on meeting Krishna. It appeared as if he had grown young discarding his old age.

The prominent harlots present there started drinking the nectar like sight of Shri Krishna with their black wasps like eyes.

Then because of the excessiveness of anger, the perspiration started appearing between the two eye brows of Kamsa.

The harshness which Karnsa had been projecting against Krishna, it turned in fire, which went into flames with the breathing of Kamsa, and it started burning his head.

Because of the rage, the lips of Kamsa were fluttering perspiration appeared over his forehead, and his face was turned red like the sun.

The drops of perspiration which appeared on the mouth of Kamsa, due to anger, appeared like dew drops falling over the tree leaves which were being touched by the sun rays.

Getting enraged, immensely, he commanded several of the wrestlers to drive out the cowherds of the forest from the wrestling ground and the public crowd.

“Both of them have been deformed and it is a sin to have a look at them. I do not want to look at them. No cowherd can live in my country.

The evil minded Nandagopa had always been consprising against me. Therefore he should be taken prisoner with iron handcuffs and fetters.

The wicked Vasudeva had always been jealous of me. Let him meet such a type of punishment today which is best suited for a youngman.

The illustrious cowherds who live by the grace of Danavas, snatch away all their cows and the riches.

Thus issing the command, using very harsh words, he looked at by Shri Krishna quite steadily.

Listening to his father and the cowherds being thus blamed, Kesava was enraged. Observing the mental agony of his kiths and kins as well as his fainting mother, he thought of reaching the platform with the sole purpose of the destruction of Kamsa. At that point of time the strength of Shri Krishna was aroused. Then the long armed Shri Krishna, who never allowed his glory to fade out, jumped like a lion in the wrestling ground, with great force and reached the lion throne of Kamsa, as the huge cloud is thrown off at a distence by the clouds.

The moment of his taking a leap from the wrestling ground, could not be realised by the people present there. The people could find only Krishna, standing by the side of Kamsa.

Kariisa on the other hand, having been over powered by death, became upset. He though that the lord Govinda had descended before him from the heaven.

Shri Krishna them extended his thick arm like an iron bar, and cought hold of Kariisa by the tuft of his hair.

After holding Kariisa, thus by Krishna, his gem studded crown fell down on the earth.

Kariisa became mountains, as if he had been captured by a planet or a crocodile. He was nonplussed getting upset at the same time.

Having been caught by the tuft, Kariisa felt as if having been dead. Breathing heavily, he could not look at face of Shri Krishna.

The ear rings of his ears had been dislodged. The garland of beads worn at the chest was shattered. Both his arms had fallen downwards, the ornaments of his entire body were fallen. The upper garment fell down and suddenly he put his arms around his neck. Then Shri Krishna threw down Kariisa over the ground with a jerk, who started floundering there.

At that point of time, Shri Krishna descended from the platform over the ground, while Kariisa was placed in a precarious condition. Then Krishna holding Kariisa by his hair, started dragging him in the wrestling ground.

With dragging of the body of Kariisa over the ground by Shri Krishna a deep ditch was formed.

Krishna after dragging the body of Kariisa, playfully, left it in the wrestling ground.

His body which enjoyed all the comforts, fell on the ground as if it were sleeping. His all the soft limbs, were hardened, covered with dust, which were unbecoming of a great warrior.

His body was completely shattered with the breaking of his neck. His eyes were closed and his head without a crown looked like the lotus without pitals.

Kariisa was killed without any fight. His body could not be injured with the arrows. He was only dragged with the pulling of his hair. He breathed out his last in this condition and he was thus fallen from the path of the death of a warrior.

The nails inserted by Shri Krishna over the body of Kamsa were shining, taking out his life. His nails had wounded deeply the body of Kamsa, tearing it out.

After killing Kamsa, the lotus eyed Krishna, was immensely delighted and all his limbs of the body started issuing lustre. He had destroyed Kamsa who was like a thorn for the man kind. Then he bowed in reverence at the feet of Vasudeva — his father.

Thereafter, Shri Krishna offered his salutation to his mother, placing his head over his feet. At that point of time, because of excess of delight in her mind, the milk started oozing out of her breasts.

Thereafter, Shri Krishna, who was illumining with his own lustre, enquired of the welfare of all the Yadavas according to their age and position.

On the other hand the glorious Balarama killed Sunama, the brother of Kamsa, with both his arms, forcefully.

Over powering the enemy and his anger both, both the valorous boys who had lived in Braj for long, went to the place of their father enthusiastically.

Here ends chapter — 30, of Visnu Parva, of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Harivamsa Purana, relating to the killing of Сапйга and Kamsa. (Vrs. 1-92 P.T. = 4573)
