Summoning of the Gopas by Kamsa

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, Shri Krishna’s lustre kept on increasing like the fire day by day on hearing this, Kamsa was disturbed. He became quite apprehensive due to the fear of Shri Krishna.

Putana had been killed, Kalinaga had been defeated, Dhenukasura had been despatahed of the abode of Yama. Pralambasura had also been killed, Govardhana had been lifted by Shri Krishna over his hand. The rule of Indra became infructuous and all the cows and the cowherds had been protected by Shri Krishna. Aristhasura having a huge hump had been killed. All the cowherds were fully delighted. On the other hand Kamsa visualised a great danger fast approaching him. The uprooting of the two Arjuna trees with the pulling of the mortar, the breaking of the bullock cart, were all the impossible events which were made possible by Krishna. The strength of the enemy was constantly on the increase, whose activities were praiseworthy. Visualising all these events, Kamsa thought, that his evil time was fast approaching him. Because of all these events, his mind, sense organs, body and intelligence, became motionless. He therefore appeared to be lifeless.

Then Kamsa, the horrible ruler at the dead of night, summoned all his relatives besides his own father Ugrasena living in Mathura.

Then Kamsa, the son of Ugrasena, summoned Vasudeva — resembling the gods, Kamsa — of the race of Yadus, Satyaka, Daruka, the younger brother of Kanka, Bhoj, Vaitarn, Vikadru — the valorous one, the religious minded Bhayasanka, Viprthu possessing huge fortunes, Akrura or Vabhru — who gave enormous charities, Krtavarma, Bhuriteja and Bhurisrava. Then he said to them, «O brothers, you please listen to me.”

“You are all well aware of your duties, the Vedas, well - versed in the juditious talk, followers of dharma, artha and kama, besides being dutiful and are adorable on the earth like the gods. Your conduct and thoughts are firm and you are unmovable like the mountains.

All of you are relieved of all types deceitfulness and fallacies. All of you have been educated in Gurukulas. All of you well preserve the secrets of the king. All of you excel in arehery.

The resplendence of your glory is spreading in the entire world. All of you are competent enough to well interpret the provisions of the Vedas. You are well aware of the responsibilities of your own asrama, all of you are highly intellectuals.

All of you are excellent oraters and leaders of the people who frame policies. You can reveal the close secrets of the enemy countries and protect those who take refuge with you.

Your noble conduct has never faced any blemish so far. All of you posses fortunes and your names are repeated many times, when the discussion of on the excellent people is made. In case it is so desired, you people can shower your grace on the heaven even, then what to speak of the earth.

Your conduct is like the Rishis, the influence is like the Marudganas, anger is like the Rudras and resplendence resemble the fire.

When the great race of Yadus, was crossing the decency and decorum, at that point of time, the glorious people like you had established its decency and decorum, in the same way as the mountains have held the earth firmly.

You people are so highly competent and move according to my wishes. But presently, inspite of your being present with me, my misfortunes are on the increase. I know not how have these misfortunes escaped you notice.

Krishna, the well known son of Nanda in Braj, is cutting our roots like over flowing of the oceanic water.

I do not have a copetent advisor. I have no heart and am thoughtless at the moment. I have turned blind in the absence of the secret eye or spies. Because of this short coming of mine, the son of Nanda Gopa is well guarded in his home.

The wicked boy is growing like the neglected ailment or the water in the rainy season poured by the thundering clouds.

What is the shelter of boy, who was born in the house of Nanda-Gopa? I am not aware of it. I am also unaware of the means to overpower the boy. I am also not aware of his strength.

I am not aware of the fact as to what type of a goblin has been born in the form of Krishna? Which one of the gods is his father? I fail to understand. His performance is beyond the competence of the humans or the gods. It is evident form his performace, that he is more powerful than the gods even.

The demoness named Putana was an invincible one. When she went to breast feed him in the childhood, he, at that time was merely an infant lying over the bed. She put her breast into his mouth to enable him to suck it. Then Krishna suck her milk from her breast with her life.

Kalinaga dwelt in a tank in the Yamuna, who was also subjugated by him. Then he drove out the Naga from the tank and made him dwell in the nether world.

Making adequate arrengement for the serpent to leave that tank he again came out of the water. He killed Dhenukasura, by dashing him against the Tala tree.

The gods were unable to defeat Pralambasura in the battle field but the same demon was killed by the boy with the administering of a fist, like an ordinary person.

He shattered the festival of Indra, he over came the rain which Indra had dropped in anger. In order to provide shalter to the cows, he even lifted up Govardhana mountain.

He killed the powerful Aristhasura in Braj uprooting his horn. He is not a boy in reality and is enjoying his sports in the form of a child.

Oberserving the performance of the boy living in Braj I apprehend that the danger is looming large over me as well as Kesl and the day of our end is not fair off, but is fast appoaching us.

The one who was my death in my last birth, he always stands before me with the desire of waging the war.

On the one hand is the inauspicious job of a cowhurds and the human body with weakness of death, and on the other hand, with the god like influence living in Braj who indulge, in the astonishing types of sports?

How astonishing is it, that some god like creature, taking to the form of a cowherd, is wandering like the fire in the cremation ground?

It is heard that in earlier times, Visnu, for the establishment of the task of the gods, took to the form of a dwarf had usurped the entire earth from the hands of Bali.

The same valorous Visnu, taking to the form of a man- lion, had killed Hiranyakasipu — the grand sire of the demons.

Similarly in the earlier times, Visnu taking to the form of Rudra, taking refuge in the unthinkable (acintya) form reaching the peak of Svetacala had destroyed Tripur as well as the demons.

Then Kaca — the son of Brhaspati, with his frog like activities, created draught in the land of demons, (kaca was also a form of Visnu).

Visnu is an eternal god, possessing a thousand heads, is indestructible. He, taking to the form of Varaha, had rescued the earth from the ocean.

During the earlier times, on the emerging of the nectar, taking to the form of MohinI — a damsel, made the gods and the demons to wage a terrific war.

The gods and the Daityas had united for the extracting of the nectar from the ocean, at that point of time Visnu taking to the form of a tortoise, had carried the Mandaracala mountain over his back, it is heard.

It is he who taking to the adorable form of Vamana, had measured the entire earth with his three steps and had snatched away the kingdom of the earth from the hands of Bali.

The same Visnu took birth in the house of the king Dasaratha in four forms and came to be known as Rama and he ultimately killed Ravana.

In this way this Visnu deceitfully takes to several forms on different occasions and establishes the task of the gods by several means.

Therefore, (I believe) that this Krishna is surely the form of Visnu, or Indra — the lord of gods. He has arrived in Braj for the sake of killing me. This is what has been revealed by Narada to me.

In this respect, I have surely started doubting Vasudeva. We have become desperate because of the superior intelligence of Vasudeva.

When I met — Narada in the Khatvanga forest, the sage then said Brahmana told me like this.

“O Kamsa, the great efforts which you made for the destruction of the pregnancies of Devaki, had been made inductions, with the efforts of Vasudeva at night.

О Kamsa, the infant girl whom you trashed over the stone slab during the night, she was the daughter of Yasoda and Shri Krishna is actually the son of Vasudeva.

Vasudeva — your friend is indeed your enemy in reality, exchanged both the children at night.

The daughter of Yasoda, infact, lives over Vindhyagiri — which is the best of the mountains. She established herself there after killing the demons Sumbha and Nisimbha.

She is being served by all the human beings and fulfills all the desires of her devotees. She likes the material for adoration and the animals wandering in the forest. The terrific demons of the place worship the goddess with devotion.

She is adored with two pitchers filled with honey and the fruit juice. The said goddess is adorned with the astonishing types of bhujadandas and other ornaments of peacock feathers.

Over the Vindhya mountains, there is beautiful forest, which has been created by her with her own glory where the sound of the crowing of the cocks is always heard there, besides the cawing of the crows. The forest is filled with the deer and other wild animals, besides the birds which please the mind. The roaring sound of the lions, tigers and boars also echoes in the sky. Because of the excess of trees there, the forest looks quite thick. It is surrounded by inaccessible places on all the sides. The divine drinking pots (with spouts), fly whisks, and the mirrors, add to the grace of-the-goddess* The place is echoed with the sound of hundereds of musical instruments. The goddess frightens her enemies, lives in the forest quite happily. Even the gods serve her there.

Narada had spoken to me about Krishna- the son of Nandagopa, that all the events that happened in Braj, Krishna is the cause for the same. He is the second son born of Vasudeva. Therefore he would be known as Vasudeva. He is sure to kill you and kill your relatives as well.

Therefore, Vasudeva son, known as Vasudeva is my relative according to dharma, but in reality he is my enemy, who is sure to destroy me.

As a crow is perched over the head of a person, and starts pecking his eyes with both his talons, similarly this Vasudeva, also, is fed by me with his friends and the relatives, but is actually engaged in cutting me at the roots.

A person can be freed from the sin of the killing of foeticide, one can perform repentence for the killing of a woman or a cow, but there is no place for an ungrateful person on earth.

The one who remains ungrateful from within and carries the burden of affection, out wordly, he soon falls into the degraded people.

The one who preserve sinful feelings against the sinless person, he has to follow the terrific path of evil.

Keeping in view, the rules, merits and the conduct, one shuold aspire to become friendly withothers. You tell me whether you prefer me or your son, as praise worthy?

When the elephants are engaged in fight the grass, the greenery, besides the creepers get destroyed. At the end of the fight those elephants, wander in the company of other elephants, eating and drinking together. Similarly with the developing of the controvarcies among the relatives, one who remains in search of weak spots, he surely meets with his death, irrespective of his being a close relative or otherwise.

O Vasudeva, you are the death for this race. I have brought you up for my own destruction. Because of the same you are increasing your enmity with me.

О foolish one, you are intolerable and enemy by nature. Your mind is always engaged in sinful ways. You are wicked and because of that the deplorable condition in which you have placed the race of Yadus, is correct also.

O old Vasudeva, the way I have rewarded you and put you in the foremost position, had been of no avail. One cannot be matured with the grey hair or the advancment of the age upto a hundred years. Only a person with a matured mind could be the best.

Your temperament is quite harsh. You are short of wisdom as well. You have reached the advanced age, like the clouds of the winter season, (but you are short of maturity).

Not only this, 0 Vasudeva, possessing useless wisdom, you have in mind that at the death of Kariisa, your son would rule the kingdom of Mathura, becoming the king of the place.

But your hope is going to be shattered soon. You have grown old uselessly. You are preserving a false belief. You take it from me, that the one who stands as my opponent, apparently, he does not want remain alive.

I have always believed in you but with your wicked mind, you tried to attack on me. I shall take revenge from both your sons and you will view the same with your own eyes.

I have never killed a Brahmana, an old person or a women earier, nor shall I do it in future. I have never killed my relatives, nor shall I do so in future.

О Vasudeva, you were born here, were grown up here and my father brought you up. You are the husband of my cousin sister. You are considered as the best among the people of the Yadu race like a preceptor.

You were born in the great race of Cakravartis, which is well known. You are yourself quite famous. Besides being a religious minded person and all the noble people have honoured you, adoring you at the same time.

You are the foremost of the clan of the race of Yadus. When your conduct is like this then what could be said about the others? What can we do? All of us have been denounced because of you and have fallen from the stage of noble people.

It is immaterial whether I am killed or become victorious because of the conduct of Vasudeva, but from today onwards, the people of the race of Yadus have fallen from the community of the noble people and they would move covering their faces.

О Vasudeva, you thinking of the ways and means to kill me in the battle field, have alone such a grave act, because of which the people have lost their faith in the Yadu-Vamsa. You have created black spot for the people of the race of Yadus making them fit for denouncement.

Presently an unending type of enmity has been created between myself and Krishna. The people of the race of Yadus, could feel peaceful only after the elimination of either of us.

О Akru — the lord of charities, you at my command atonce go to Braj and bring the sons of Vasudeva, Nandagopa, and all other cowherds, who pay taxes to me, to Mathura, rapidly.

You tell Nandagopa that he should reach Mathura, with the amount of annual tax payable by him to me.

Tell them that the king Kariisa desire to meet Shri Krishna and Samkarsana, together with their priest.

I have heard that both of them are good wrestlers and well versed in the waging of war and they have practiced for the purpose for long. Both the brothers are quite clever and strong.

With us also there are two wrestlers who are ready for the contest. They feel delighted in fighting. They are also competent in waging a war, who would fight with Balarama and Shri Krishna.

Both the divine boys are the sons of my cousin sister, who presently live in Braj, while wandering in the forest. I must surely meet them.

When you reach Braj, you should tell the dwellers of Braj that the king Kamsa is going to organinse on archery yajna.

All the invitees should came to Mathura and be comfortably lodged in the forest located close to Mathura.

You arrange for the adequate supply of milk, ghee, curd, butter milk etc for the guests to their full satisfaction. You arrange for the adequate supply of milk for the preparation of payasam by them. They should be lodged close to the city.

O Akrura, you move siwetly and bring both Shri Krishna, Balarama here at my command. I am getting anxious to meet them.

I shall be pleased on their arrival here. On meeting both the most valorous boys, I shall do whatever is beneficial for me.

At this command of mine, in case the boys feel reluctant to come here, then you can take them as prisoners and bring them here.

It would be only proper to persuade the boys to come to Mathura. Therefore you bring the boys here, speaking sweet words, quite quickly.

О Akrura — the performer of the excellent Vrata, you carryout my desired task, before Vasudeva poisons your ears against me. You should move in such a way that both the boy come to me, of their own.”

At these satrical words of Kamsa, Vasudeva, did not feel disturbed at all, since he had the ocean like heart. He exercised enormous control over himself.

Kamsa, who was not far sighted, injured the noble heart of Vasudeva with sharp arrows like words but he did not answer anyone of his words keeping patience.

The people who witnessed Vasudeva being so humiliated, they lowering their heads, uttered disgrace for Karhsa.

The immensely glorious Akrura, by means of his divine sight, was well aware of the future happenings (and the reason for the incarnation of Shri Krishna) felt delighted at heart like a thirsty person getting water. Therefore he felt happy at Karhsa’s sending him to Braj.

Akrura - the lord of charities, felt delighted at heart and at once left Mathura in order to have an audience with the lotus eyed Krishna.

Here ends chapter — 22, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana - a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to summoning of the Gopas by Kariisa. (Vrs. 1-103, P.T. = 4070)

Chapter 23

Andhaka’s reply to Kamsa

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the excellent people of the race of Yadukala who were present there, closed their ears with both the hands when Kamsa so denounced. All of them felt sure that the end of Kamsa was fast approaching.

Among the people present there Andhaka had also arrived to participate in the assembly. He was not the least afraid of Karhsa. With utmost patience at his command, he controlled his speech, spoke to Kamsa in a strong voice.

He said: “O son, you have taken the trouble of making such a long speech. But in my view your speech and feelings are not at all respectable. This is totally improper. The best of the people have always denounced the same. Particularly such types of expression against your own relative are totally deplorable.

О Valorous one, now whatever is going to be spoken by me at present, you listen to the same, attentively. In case you are not Yadava or you do not consider yourself to be a Yadava, then the people of the race of yadus are not making you a Yadava, (nor do they intend to do so).

О son, you are the ruler of Vrsni — race, and as such you cannot be praiseworthy. A king named Prajapldha was once born in the race of Iksavaku, who had on a certain time deserted the kingship and ran away. (You are similarly born in the race of Yadus and you are also going to meet the same fate).

О son, irrespective of your being a Bhoja, a Yadava or Karhsa, or whatever you might be, your head was born with you (and it is still there). Whether you adore it with matted lockss of hair or shave it clean, (and in case you donot intend to remain a Yadava, you can become whatever you like).

In my view, Ugrasena is deplorable that you have born to him and have brought disgrace to the race.

O son, the intelligent people, do not praise themselves, highlighting their own qualities. The virtues praised by others are the real virtues which bring success and are considered athentic as well like the Vedas.

The race of Yadus has become deplorable on earth (because of your evil ways), with the mlers of the world, because a foolish person like you, who is destroyer of the race, short sighted is the ruler of the Yadavas.

You have considered the deplorable words as the best, using them in your speech, no task is going to be established with the same, on the contrary it has exposed your evil nature, (you have been exposed as to how degraded a person are you?).

To denounce the respectable people who are adorable by all including the preceptors, amounts to the killing of a Brahmana and by so doing who can expect to attain welfare?

О son, the elderly people are adorable like the fire and have to be served accordingly. Their anger reduces to ashes, the lokas which achieved after making enormous efforts internally.

О son, a person whose soul is moving for upliftment, who is self conrolled and has far sight, besides being a learned person, such a person should always be engaged in search of dharma. The movement of dharma is quite subtle, like the fish moving in the water.

Because of your arrogance, you are causing pain to the illustrious aged people speaking harsh words. As the offerings made in the fire without uttering of the hymns, is infructions, similarly your satrical words are of no use.

Whatever Vasudeva did for the safety of his son (was correct) and for that you are finding fault with him. This is all your meaningless utterance. I denonce the words of cowerdice spoken by you in this regard.

Even when the son becomes of a cruel temperament, the father cannot become heartless with him, because the father has to face many misfortunes for the sake of his sons.

In case Vasudeva concealed his son for his protection at that time, then it was not an improper act. In case you think it to be an improper act, then you better go to your own father and ask him about the same.

By finding fault with Vasudeva, and by denouncing him, you have sown the seed of poisonous hatred with the Yadava princes.

In case Vasudeva, saving the life of his son, has done improper thing, then why did Ugrasena not kill you during your infancy?

A son saves his parents from falling in the hell named Put and because he is called Putra by the religious minded people.

Both Shri Krishna and Samkarsana belong to Yadava race, but you became inimcial to them, at their birth itself. (Therefore you are yourself to be blamed for the enmity).

You have found fault with Vasudeva and you have created anger in the mind of Krishna against yourself and because of this the hearts of all the Yadavas are shaken.

On the one had you were inimicial to Krishna and on the other hand, you have fully denounced Vasudeva, which create inauspicious symptoms and would be dangerous for you.

When the night is coming to an end, at that point of time, to visualise the serpents or evildrems is harmful. What ever dreams are visualised, they point to the distruction of the city. Whatever causes are forthcoming till now, point to the same.

The terrific planet Mhu, is shooting Svati constellation with its rays and the awful Mars, become Vakri (opponent) in the Sarvatobhadra, is lodged in the chitra constellation.

The planet Murcury with his horrible lustre is rising from the western direction. (Such a symptom makes one lose his crown) Venus on the other hand is moving on the solar path rapidly, (crossing the sun is called aticara).

The comet has injured the thirteen planets like Bharanl and others and because of that, they do not follow the moon.

The evening of the estern time is infested with the parigha, which creates obstructions in the movements of the sun forcefully. The birds and animals uttering their respective voices, move in the opposite directions.

At the time of both the sandhyas a terrific she jackal moving out of the cremation ground, showers fire with her breath and crying aloud, moves round the city of Mathura.

Some time back there had been the fall of a comet over the land of Braj. The peaks of the earth and the mountains start shaking suddenly.

A few days back the sun was eclipsed by Ra.hu, as a result of which the day was plunged in darkness. All the directions are covered with the smoke and disturbances. The lightnings fall in dry season.

The thudering clouds, with ligthtening pour the rain of blood. The images of the gods get renounced from their original places, while the birds are deserting their (nests) on trees.

The astrologers interpret all these as the bad omens for the king. They are being viewed by us.

You are inimical to the noble relatives and have become averse to the royal duties. You get angry without any reason. This goes on to establish that grave danger is going to fall on your head.

O evil minded one, you are casting asperions on Vasudeva because of delusion. Then how could you be at peace?

We are going to discard the affection we had for you in our minds. You are going to do harm to you race. We shall not therefore sit with you even for a moment.

Graceful is Akrura — the lord of charities, who would meet the lotus eyed Shri Krishna in the forest, who performs the enormous deeds with ease.

Because of you the roots of the race of Yadus have been cut off. Now Shri Krishna alone will come and unite the people.

The learned Vasudeva has pardoned you for your sins. The destiny has destroyed your farsight. Therefore you can do as you like.

О Kamsa, what I feel proper is, that you should go with Vasudeva to the place of Shri Krishna and enter into a compromise with him.

Here ends chapter — 23, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabhdrata relating to Andhaka’s reply to Kamsa. (Vrs. 1-40. P.T. = 4110)

Chapter 24

Killing of Kesi

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening to the words of Andhaka, the eyes of Kamsa became red with anger. He spoke nothing to him and in rage, he left the place an went to his palace.

Then all the Yadavas who had heard the speeches of both of them in detail were disappointed and left for their respective abodes. They all felt that Kathsa had lost the balance of his mind.

Akrura on the other hand developed a desire to meet Shri Krishna. Therefore, he got up at the command of Kamsa, and started from Mathura mounted over the fast moving chariot.

On the other hand Krishna observed some noble symptoms in his body, which indicated with a fatherly type of a person.

Before the sending of Akrura to Shri Krishna, Kamsa the son of Ugrasena, had sent a massenger to Kesi asking him to kill Shri Krishna.

Listening to the words of the messenger, Kesi who tortured the people, went to Vrndavana and started troubling the people.

Kesi lived on earth in the form of a horrible horse Daitya and cosumed the human flesh. The wicked Daitya, getting enraged, started massive massacre of humans in Vrndavana.

He killed the cows with the cowherds and ate the flesh of cows. The intoxicated Kesl wandered at will and was quite rude.

The wicked Danava in the form of a horse, lived in a forest, which is filled with the human flesh and bones and appeared like a cremation ground.

He could dig the earth with his hoofs and uprooted the trees with his force. He exhale forceful wind while neighing and could jump into the sky.

The wild and wicked horse who wandered in the forest was immensely arrogant. His manes were always shaking. The awful Daitya followed the conduct of Kathsa.

With the intention of killing all the cowhurds the sinful Daitya in the form of a wild horse had rid the forest of all the humans.

The wicked Daitya had polluted the entire forest. The people who earned their livelihood from the forest as well as the cows could not make use of the forest.

Because of his arrogance, the Daitya had fallen from nobility and usually he consumed the human flesh. He had made the route passing through his abode as inaccessible.

Getting enraged, once Kesl, following the human sound, entered the village of cowherds in Vrndavan. The death was hovering over his head at that time.

Looking at him, all the cowherds and the milkmaids, fled away carrying their children ciying aloud and took refuge with Shri Krishna, the protector of the universe.

Shri Krishna was moved with the cries of the milkmaids as well as the cowherds, protected them and then pounced upon Keshi.

Keshi too raising his head and neighing aloud rushed towards Shri Krishna. At that point of time, he was displaying his teeth, started at him.

Finding the Danava Kesl in the form of a horse, approaching him, Shri Krishna moved forward to face him as if the black cloud was moving towards the moon.

Finding Shri Krishna standing before Kesi, the cowherds who were well-wishers of Krishna, said to him.

With his face and the shoulders covered with manes, there appeared lines due to the squeezing of the skin, like the waves of the clouds, which started drops of perspiration because of his anger.

“О dear Krishna, donot go suddenly to the degraded Daitya Kesi, because you are still a boy and this sinful Kesi is a terrific Daitya.

In fact he is life incarnate to Kamsa, wandering here and there, and is the best among of the horses. There is no one on earth to face him in the battle.

He terrifies all the living beings and is the most valorous amongst the horses. He is invincible from all the bhUtas in the world and is the foremost among the sinful people.

Listening to the world spoken by the cowherds, Madhusudan, the destroyer of the enemies, thought of fighting with Kesi.

Thereafter the horse moving on the right and left, started felling the trees wih two of his hoofs in anger.

Then he started showering from his nostrils as well as the mouth, foam mixed with dust, like the moon dropping the fog during the winter season.

О son of Bharata, he bathed the lotus eyed Krishna with the drops of water and foam emerging from his mouth.

With the dust raised by his golloping, which looked yellowish like the powder he made the hair the head of Shri Krishna to appear red.

Kesi was jumping with his legs, who was digging the earth with his hoofs and was grinding the teeth. Suddenly he rushed towards Shri Krishna.

Kesi - the foremost of the horses, had a scuffle with Shri Krishna and he attack the son of Gopal over his chest with both his forehoofs.

The valorous Danava attacked Shri Krishna from right and left quite forcefully.

The enraged horse having the teeth as his weapons, injured Shri Krishna, with his mouth over his forearm.

Then Kesi with long manes, struggling with Krishna looked graceful as the sun gets entagled in the sky with the clouds.

The prowess of the strong horse, was doubled because of his anger. Then he thought of attacking the chest of Shri Krishna with his chest.

Then the immensely valorous Krishna also, thrust his arm expanding it into the mouth of Kesi.

The demon could not chew the arm of Shri Krishna with his mouth. To the contrary all his teeth were broken and he started vomiting blood from his mouth.

His lips and cheeks were torne into pieces. With loosening of the nerves, the eyes of Kesi were broken and bulged out.

The lower lip of Kesi was turn out. Because of the inserting of the arm into the horse’s mouth, the blood started oozing out of his eyes. His ears too were torne out which fell on ground. In that condition Kesi fell down and started floundering.

He started throwing his hoofs emitting dung and urine again and again. Each an every limb of the horse was injured. Ultimately he was exhausted and his legs became motionless.

Half of the arm of Shri Krishna that was inserted into the mouth of Kesi, appeared like the half moon during the rainy season, covered with the clouds.

The body of the demon Kesi became life less with his fight with Shri Krishna. At that time he looked graceful as the moon getting exhausted taking refuge over the Meru mountain during the morning hours at dawn.

With the striking of Shri Krishna’s arm, all the teeth of Kesi were broken, which fell on earth from the mouth, resembling the pieces of clouds of the winter season.

When the body of Kesi became totally motionless, then Shri Krishna — the performer of the noble deeds, expanding his arm, forcefully tore out his body from the middle of it.

In the fight, because of the tearing out of the mouth of Kesi by Shri Krishna, it looked awful. Feeling painful, the Danava started crying in distress.

All his limbs were fatigued. Rotating on the ground, he was vomiting blood. His body had lost many limbs. It appeared, as if a mountain was torn out from the middle.

The demon Kesi, whose mouth had been torn out with the arm of Shri Krishna, and was divided into two parts, then fell down on earth like an elephant having been cut into two pieces falls over the ground.

The body of Kesi, who was torn out into two parts with his arm by Shri Krishna appeared like Mahisasura having been killed by Rudra, the holder of the bow.

The two parts of body of Kes'i, bearing two legs, half the back and tail, one ear, eye and half of the nose, which looked fine lying on the ground.

The arm of Shri Krishna having been injured with the teeth of the demon Kesi, like a huge Sola tree having been injured by a huge tusker.

Thus by killing Kesi in the battle, tearing out his body into several parts, the lotus eyed Shri Krishna, stood there smiling.

Finding Kesi having been killed, the milk maids were immensely delighted. The obstructions of all them had been removed.

According to the age and place all the cowhurds started worshipping Damodara Shri Krishna felicitatring him with sweet words.

The cowhurds said: О adorable one, you have performed an astonishing task. The Daitya, who had been a thorn for the world, has met with his end at your hands. О Krishna, this was demon, wandering on earth in the form of a horse.

О adorable one, by killing the Danava in the form of a horse, you have brought prosperity on the people, the animals and the birds of Vrindavana.

This wicked person had killed several of our cowherds, besides the cows, who loved their calves. Besides, several of the habitations had been destroyed by him.

This sinful Danava had surely been born for the destruction of the universe. By depriving the earth of the humans he intended to wander on earth with ease.

A person desirous of living on earth could never face him. Even the crowds of gods were unable to face him, then what to speak of the humans living on earth.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the areal sage Narada, staying invisibly in the sky, spoke, “O Visnu, the lord of gods, 0 Krishna, О Krishna, I am immensely pleased with you.

Narada said: О lord, by killing Kesl, you have performed a difficult task, This could be done by you alone or the three eyed Rudra in the heaven.

О adorable one, I am always anxious to witness the war, therefore adoring you from my inner soul, I had arrived here from heaven to witness the fight between you and the demon horse.

O Govinda, I have also witnessed the killing of Putana, but with the killing of Kesl, I had derived a unique satisfaction.

This wicked soul, taking to the terrific form of a horse (frightened all and) even Indra was afraid of him.

You extending one of your arm, have tom out his body. Brahma the creator of the universe had prescribed the same type of death for him.

Now you listen to my command, since you have killed Kesl, therefore you will be known in the world by the name of Kesava.

“Let you meet with welfare in the world. Showing bessing on you, I shall move rapidly. Whatever tasks have been left out, you perform them as well. You are competent enough to do so. Therefore perform them quickly without delay.

When you arrive here to relieve the earth of her burden, then all the gods, who take shelter with you, follow your divine sports like the human beings, and enact the plays.

The time for the Mahabharata war is drawing near like the ocean. For the kings desirous of heaven, the time of war has arrived.

There are sky way ’ for the places to fly in the sky. All the obstructions have been removed for them. For the kings who are to arrive in Indraloka, separate space has been earmarked.

О Kesava, after the killing of Kamsa — the son of Ugrasena, you will be established over the highest place of Yadavas for their protection. At that point of time the great war of the kings would start.

There is no comparison of your prowess, therefore the Pandavas will take refuge with you. When the war would become imminent because of the difference among the rulers, you well side with the Pandavas at that time.

When you would occupy the throne, then the rulers, because of your influence, would discard all the fortunes and royal riches. There is no doubt about it.

О lord of the universe, О Krishna, this is the message from me as well as the gods who live in the heaven, which is enshrined secretly in the Srutis (scriptures). It would now be popular in the world as well.

О lord, I have witnessed you prowess, and have met you as well, welfare for you. I shall depart now, I shall meet you again after the death of Kamsa.

Thus speaking Narada atonce flew back into the sky with the appearing of Narada with move of the destiny and the words so spoken by him, Shri Krishna said “be it so” and accepted his advice. Thereafter he met the cowhurds, who accompanied Shri Krishna and returned to Braj.

Here ends chapter — 24, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the killing of KesL (Vrs. 1-76, P.T. = 4146)
