Kamsa command to Kuvalya-pidha driver and the story of the birth of Dramulika





Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, Kamsa the promotor of the Bhojavamsa, thought over the event of the breaking of the bow and felt disturbed in his mind. The more he thought about it, the more his mind was filled with grief.

He thought, “How could the fearless boy, disregarding the gurad, in full view of the other people broke the bow and left the place?

He happens to be the same boy, for killing whom, I indulge into a cruel and deplorable deed and killed the six sons of my consin sister.

It is true that the moves of the destiny cannot be averted by making human efforts. Narada had told me something and the situation according to the same has arrived.”

Thus thinking, Karhsa came out of his excellent abode and at once went to inspect the dasis made there in the weapon chamber.

The excellent monarch found the weapon chamber to have been well organised and well arranged. Many of the artisons who lived on making structures had built several platforms, which were fixed tightly. In some of the canopies six pillars had been erected which expanded them and in some canopies, there was a single pillar. The observation seats were set up over there platforms.

Strong pegs had been fixed over the walls around. It was a vast structure and was well built. For ascending the platforms, the broad, raised steps had been made which were joined with one another, because of which the entire structure looked quite graceful.

For the seating of the kings the lion thrones had been placed on all the sides. There were several incoming and exit paths for movement in the sports chamber. The entire palace was filled with many platforms. It had the capacity to house a large number of the people there.

The intelligent Kamsa, finding the sports chamber, having been decorated, in every respect it, then he commanded his workers. “Tomorrow, all the projections, the platforms and the streets should be decorated with painting, flower garlands, and the banners. The fragrent water should be sprinkled, giving them an excellent shape. Beautiful canopies should be erected over the platforms.

In the wrestling ground, the heaps of cowdung powder should be arranged because of which there should be no shortage for them. At places, beautiful curtains should be provided for decoration. Suitable pillars should be arranged for them, which should be placed deep in the earth. For placing of the drinking water pitchers, water stands should be arranged, which should be able to carry the weight of the water pots. The golden vases filled with water should be placed over them.

The articles for making gifts should be collected. Juice should be filled in water. The people who are well versed with the rules of the wrestling should be invited for the occasion. The businessmen and the artisens should be invited with their leaders.

The wrestlers and the observers should be asked to reach in time. To add grace to the platforms, erected in the sports chamber, should be well decorated.

Thus conmanding for the proper decoration of the sports chamber, the king Kamsa, left the place and returned to his palace.

He summoned his two wrestlers there. One of them was the immensely strong Сапйга and the other was Mustika.

Both the stronged valorous wrestlers, with strong arms, obeying the command of Kamsa, delightfully entred the royal palace.

At the arrival of the world renowed wrestlers, Karhsa spoke appropriate words to them.

He said, “Both of you are the famous wrestlers of the court and have been established as the foremost of the wrestlers by bestowing you the gallantry awards. Both of you are entilled to be specially honoured by me. Because of that I have always honoured you.

Therefore, in case you have the honour granted by me in mind, and have not forgotton the good I have done to you, then you shall have to perform a great task of mine.

There are two cowherds known as Krishna and Balarama who have been brought up in Braj. Inspite of their being the boys they are not at all tiresome.

When both the forest dwellers, arrive in the wrestling ground, to have a fight with you, then both of you throwing them over the ground, should kill them. There should be no doubt about it.

Both of them are the unstable boys and untrained in the warfare. Thus thinking, you should not neglect them. You must make all the efforts for killing them.

In case both the boys are killed in the wrestling ground, then I shall meet with your welfare presently as well as future.

With the uttering of the loving words by Karhsa, the hearts of both the wrestlers felt delighted. Both the wrestlers Caniira and Mustika who were always anxious for fight, then spoke to the king.

“In case both the boys who are the blemish of the cowherds race, stand before us in the battle, then you should take them as having been killed. You take them as the forms of goblins, who have taking the trouble, (coming here).

In case both of them, having been overpowered with some eval planet, fight with us, then we shall surely kill the forest dwellers, in full view of all those present there.

Thereafter he called for the elephant driver, who earned his living by diiving the elephant and said to him, “The elephant named KuvalyapUdha should stand guard the entrace gate of the sports chamber. It is quite strong, with the wavering eyes because of intoxication, always gets enraged against the humans. The fluid always flows from his temples. Finding an elephant on the opposite direction, it is filled with rage. Even otherwise it is quite angry by nature as well. The strong sons of Vasudeva, who dwell in the forest, on their arrival at the gate then you should let loose the elephant on them, killing them at the same time. I desire that both the intoxicated boys of the forest, living in the cow pens, should be killed by you and the elephant Kuvalyapidha at the enterance gate of the sports chamber.

Finding then lying dead on the ground, Vasudeva shall be cut at the root. He and his wife having been deprived of any shelter shall be destroyed.

At the same time, all the foolish Yadavas, who bank on Krishna, finding him dead, feeling disgusted, shall fall in the pit of distinction.

By getting them both killed, through the Kuvalyapidha elephant or from the wrestlers, or by killing them myself, freeing the city of Mathura from the Yadavas, I shall live here comfortably.

I have disowned my own father who carried the burden of the race of Yadus. Rest of the Yadavas, who side with Krishna have already been disowned by me.

The fact of the matter is that I have not been born of the weak Ugrasena — the desirous of a son, as has been revealed to me by Narada.”

Mahamatra said, “The Mahavata (elephant rider asked) О king, what had been told to you by Narada in earlier times? О destroyer of the enemies, their is an astonishing tale that has been heard by me from your mouth.

In case Ugrasen is not your father, then how were you born from another instead of him? О great king, what type of an evil deed had been performed by your mother?”

Even an ordinary woman would never indulge in such a misdeed. Then how did she do it? I would like to listen to the tale exhaustively from you. I am anxious to know about the same.”

Kamsa said, “O elephant driver, in case you are desirous of hearing this tale, then I am going to reveal to you whatever the sage Narada had told me.

The sage Narada is the friend of Indra. Once, he, clad in white costumes resembing the moon rays, with matted locks of hair over his head, arrived at my place from the abode of Indra.

His shoulder was covered with the skin of the black buck. He was wearing a golden sacred thread, carrying a danda and a Kamandala in his hands and he appeared like another Prajapati.

Narada is well-versed in the Vedas no doubt but he is well-versed in the sciences of music as well. Therefore he recites all the Vedas. The eternal Narada who wanders in the Brahmloka once arrived at my abode.

At the arrival of the sage Narada at my place, I adored him, adequately, offering him Padya and arghya. Then I lodged him inside my palace.

When was seated comfortably, then he enquired of my welfare and with the delightful mind, the divine sage said to me.

Narada said,“you have adorned according to the method prescribed in the scriptures. Therefore listen to my words and accept them.

The golden Sumeru mountain is the abode of the gods. Once the gods had collected there, when I also reached there.

At that point of time all the gods were discussing about the ways and means of killing you, I therefore heard their talk from their mouths.

О Kamsa, in the eight conception of Devaki, will be lodged lord Visnu who is adorable by the world. He would be the cause of your death.

Lord Visnu is everything for the gods. He is the refuge of the heaven. Therefore he would be the cause of your death.

О Kamsa, therefore you make efforts to kill the children born of Devaki. One should fiQt neglect an enemy even when his is weak or one’s own relative.

This Ugrasena is not your father in realty. The valorous Drumila — the lord Drumila the lord of Sauma-vimana is your father.

On hearing the words of Narada, I was enraged a bit and I asked him “O Brahmana, how could the Danava Drumila be my father and how was my mother united with him? I would like to listen from you, the reality about the same.”

At this, Narada said, “O king, very good, the talk between your mother and Drumila and their union, shall be revealed by me. You please listen to me.

Once upon a time, your mother, after getting relieved from menstrual bath, out of curosity, accompanied with other ladies went to the Suyamana mountain for sight seeing.

She started moving there over the pleasent peaks of the moutain. She wandered there in the mountain caves and the pleasent looking trees, besides the banks of the river.

She heard the pleasent words which pleased the ears besides arousing the possions. These were in the forms of the songs sung by the Kinnars and were quite sweet, the echo of which was heard everywhere.

The sweet cries of the peacock, and the sweets notes of the birds, were heard by your mother as a result of which a desire in her mind was aroused to have a union with a man.

In the meantime the pleasent and favourable wind passing through the forstes and fragrant orchards starts blowing, carrying the fragrance of the blossomed flowers, which also aroused passions in the ladies.

The black wasps were hovering over the Kadamba trees, which looked as their ornaments. The blossomed Kadamba trees with blowing of the wind and with the constant fall of the streams of water, started issuing more fragrance.

The medicinal trees (Messya ferrea) which arise the passions, were showering the flowers. The blue Asoka trees with the thorn like flowers, were shining like the lamps.

The earth like the young maid in period, was covered with the fresh green grass and decorated with the red insects.

At that point of time Daitya Drumila - the lord of saum-plane and because of the future aspirations and move of the destiny, reached there.

His plane, which moved at will, like was shining like the rising sun of the dawn. In order to enjoy the beauty of the Suyamuna mountain he suddenly descended over that mountain.

The Danava, who roamed in the sky by the plane which could move with the speed faster them the mind, reached over the Suyamuna mountain.

He halted the chariot which could destroy the enemy chariots, in an orchard over the mountain, he started wandering over the mountain with the pilot of the plane.

Both of them visited several of the gardens as well as the forests. The orchards there resembled the Nandanavana and had the qualities of all the seasons.

Both of them walked through the mountain caves, the peaks and over river banks. Several of the high peaks of the mountain had a number of metals in them. They looked graceful with many of the gems found in them. Both of them found that several peaks of the mountains appeared like gold, silver and collyrium. The fragrance of various types of flowers was spread in the air. Several species of creations (birds and animals) lived there. Several species of birds issued sweet notes from the mountain tops, which created huge noise. Several types of trees blossoming with flowers were growing there. The Rishis and the siddhas lived over the mountains peaks where many types of Osadhis and greenery were growing.

The Vidyadharas, Kinnaras, bears, monkeys, Raksasas, lions, tigers, boars, he- bujfaloes, hares, wild animals, spotted cows, stags, elephants, Yaksas, demons, and creatures of several types were witnessed by him. The Danava then kept on wandering over the mountain.

At the same time, the demon king spotted from a distance the queen of Ugrasena who was engaged like a divine damsel.

The beautiful queen, who was engaged in sport with her hand maids and roaming over the mountain, Drumila — the lord of Samavimana felt surprised and he spoke to the pilot.

“O Suta, who is the damsel with doe like eyes wandering in the forest. She is extremely beautiful and appeared like Rati.

It is wanderful. Is she Sad the wife of Indra or is she Tilothama or is she Urvasi who emerged out of the thigh of Narayana and was wedded to Pururava, is she the same damsel UravasT?

We have heard that the gods together with the demons, making Mandaracala as the churning rod had churned the ocean of milk. At that point of time out of the nectar like milk Laksmi-adorable by the world had emerged. She adorns the lap of lord Narayana. Is this beautiful damsel not Laksmi herself.

The lightening residing inside the blue sky displays its lustre at short intervals. Similarly this damsel, surrounded by the other damsel, illumining her beauty as well as the forest, is roaming about there.

Her limbs are extremely tender, the face resemble the moon, the lustre of which is spreading. Looking at the sinless beauty of this damsel. I have gone mad. All my sense- organs have became restive.

I have been over powered with passion. My mind has became anxious. The god of love holding the flower bow, is injuring my body with flower arrows. Shooting all his five arrows, he is woundering quite cruelly.

The fire of passion is on increase in my heart — with the pouring of the offerings of ghee in it, it has gone in flames, what type of efforts should be made to extinguish the fire. What method should be used extinguish it? What should be done by what means, that this damsel who walks gracefully should accept me.

Thus even after thinking for long, who he could find no remedy, then the Danava said to the pilot, “O sinless one, you wait her for a couple of ghatis (fortyfour minuntes). I shall myself go and find out whose wife is she?

You should wait for me here itself till my return.” On hearing the words of Drumila the chariotor said, “very well. It will be done like that.”

Thus speaking to the pilot, the valorous demon king Drumila, thought of going to the damsel. Then he rinced his month with water and them meditated for a moment about her.

After meditating for two ghatis and with the strength of his yogic knowledge he found her to be the wife of Ugrasena.

Then he changed his form and took to the form of Ugrasena. Thereafter the immensely valorous and long armed demon king wearing a smile over his face, went to the queen and he smilingly took her in his arms. In this way the chastity of your mother was shattered by the demon in the form of Ugrasena.

Because she was immensely devoted to her husband, therefore kept on serving the demon with immense love. Thereafter, feeling the weight his body, she developed a doubt.

She became fearful and getting up suddenly she said to him, “surely, you are not my husband — whose wicked son are you? You have made me earn blemish and defiled me.”

O degraded one you taking to the form of my husband, by your degraded deed have polluted me.

“Now all my relatives, getting enraged shall consider me as a defiled woman. Now I shall have to live with denouncement from the in laws.

You are intoxicable, born in a blemished race, having no control over your sense organs, wild and the one who defiles the other women. Therefore disgrace to you.”

When so denouncing the demon king, she entered into an altercation with him, and listening to her words of denoncement, the Danava said in anger, “O foolish woman, you consider yourself to be so intelligent. I am the valorous Drumila, the powerful lord of Saumplane. why are you finding fault with me taking refuge of a weak human who is subject to death.

The women you are proud of the honour of the women do not get defiled or bleshmished with the forcible union with the gods or the demons. The minds of such women and particularly the human ladies’ is not stable always.

It is heard that several of the women with the blemish of infidelity forced on them, do not get defiled. Such woman, and particularly the human ladies produce divine sons.

In the world of women only you are devoted to your husband, besides being chaste and spotless.

О intoxicated woman, you have asked me about my father. Therefore you will produce a son named Karhsa who will be the destroyer of enemies.”

On hearing this the goddess, getting further enraged, denouncing his boon, and stubbornly spoke to the demon denouncing him, feeling painful at heart.

«O wicked Danava, disgrace to your hateful deed and" for your denouncing the ladies of the world. Admitting that ther are evil women also in the world with low character, but the number of the chaste women devoted to their husbands is no less.

О degraded one of your race, there are ladies like Arundhati and others, who had been quite chaste and devoted to their husbands. You think of them, who held all the people and the lokas on the strength of their chastity.

You have bestowed a son to me who would be devoid of virtue and morality, I have no respect for the same in my mind. What ever have I to tell you in this connection, you listen to it.

What is the use speaking more? The prowess, strength, justice, humility, evidence, lustre, power, truth, and by charities, there is none to be compared with me.

О degraded one, now in the race of my husband, the supreme soul would incarnate and who would become the cause of death for you as well as your son.”

At these words of the queen, Drumila mounting the plane of excellent speed, flew away in the sky.

Your mother, feeling miserable, left for the city of Mathura on the same day. О Mahanta, thus speaking to me, the best of the saged, Narada, illumining with his own lustre, resembling the fire, playing on Veena which issued the seven tunes and while singing proceeded on to the abode of Brahma, through the invisible path, by the divine plane.

О elephant rider, you listen to my words and well understand them. The intelligent Narada who was aware of the happening of the three worlds, had spoken to me the truth.

О Mahavata, I possessing all the virtues, believe in the words of Narada. There is no doubt that I am the hybrid son of Ugrasena.

My parents have disowned me. I am occupying the lion throne, because of my own strength. My parents as well as my other relative are envious of me.

All of them have joined the side of Krishna. Therefore, I getting both the boys Yadava race trampled under the feet of the elephants, and then kill all the Yadavas as well.

Therefore О Mahavata, you go and mount the elephant Kuvalypidha, carrying a good, spear, tomara, forcefully guard the gatf of wrestling chamber. Donot delay.
