Super human conduct of Krishna and Rasalila

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, after the departure of Devaraja Indra, Shri Krishna — the carrier of Govardhana, having been adored by the cowherds entered Braj.

Welcoming and honouring Krishna, all the elderly cowherds and other relatives spoke to him, “O divine and valorous Govinda we are really graceful, with your conduct and behaviour, you have showered enormous grace on us. By your grace the cows have been reduced of the danger of the rains and we people too have been rescued of the grave danger.

O lord of cows, we are witnessing all you supernatural activities. О Shri Krishna, with the lifting up of the mountain Govardhana, we have well unerstood that you are not a human being but are a god.

You prowess is enormous you tell us as to who you are amongst Rudra, Marudganas, or the Vasus? How has Nanda become your father?

О Krishna, you possess such an enormous strength since childhood, which is supernatural. Your sports are also super human like, all your activities are divine. But you have been born amongst us, which is deplorable. Thus thinking, our minds are becoming doubtful.

Why are you mixing up with us in the form of a cowherd? This job is quite contemptible for you. You being valorous like the Lokapalas, why are you grazing the cows, guarding them?

Irrespective of your being a god or a Danava, a Yaksa or a Gandharva, but you have been born as our relative. Whatever you are, О Krishna, we offer our salutation to you.

In case you are living with us for a particular purpose, then we are all your faithful servents, and take refuge in you.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening to the words spoken by the cowherds, Shri Krishna, having the eyes like the blossomed lotus flowers, smiled and spoke to the cowherds accordingly.

By considering me to be such a powerful person, you people should not insult me. I am actually your relative and am one of you.

In case you are really interested in knowing the reality about me, then you should wait for the appropriate time, when you would know about my reality. Then you would be able to learn reality about me and have a better understanding about me.

In case this boy possessing the divine lustre happens to be one of you, what is need for making such enquiries about him. I shall indeed be grateful in case you kindly keep silent about the same.”

At these words of Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, the cowherds shut their mouths keeping quiet, all of them left to different directions.

On the other hand, Krishna, on the full moon night, finding the moon to be shining brighty and observing the pleasent night of the winter season, thought in his mind of the merriment.

Valorous Krishna, arranged for the fighting of the bulls in the lanes of Braj covered with the dust of the burnt cowdung.

Then the valorous Govinda, arranged for the wrestling match between the powerful cowherds organised fake encounters of the cows with the fake crocodiles.

Then Krishna, who could recognise the time will be honouring his childhood age, took the young milkmaids at night in the forest, and started sporting with them.

The milkmaids were shining at night, observed the charming face of Krishna like the moon and they kept on gazing at him.

At the same time Shri Krishna clad in the silken costumes of the colour of yellow green, like the bird Haritala, over his body, appeared more charming.

His arms were decorated with armlets, the crown adorned the head, besides the garland of forest flowers and around the neck. In this way Govinda was enhancing the glory of Braj.

Observing the astonishing performance of Krishna in the cowpens, the milkmaids lovingly called him Damodara at that time.

The beautiful milk maids, embrased him with their developed breasts, quite tightly, again and again, while gazing at her face.

Against the wishes of their parents, brothers and husbands, the milkmaids went on in search of Krishna during the night, because the beauty of Krishna or his company was quite dear to them.

All the milkmaids stood in a circle, and both the sides of each one of the milkmaids, Krishna was found present. Thus the couples of Krishna and the milkmaid was formed, the damsels sang the glory of Krishna delighting him at the same time.

Their gaze was always fixed at Shri Krishna. The young beautiful damsels following the sports of Krishna, walked like him.

The other beauties of Braj participated in the sport, clapping their hands while roaming in the forest.

The damsels of Braj delightfully danced with Krishna while singing smiling, and imitating his wavering eyes, sported variously.

The milkmaid beauties, going to Braj- mandala sang such type of songs which displayed their enormous love for Krishna, as a result of which the sweetness of the songs was increased. Thus all the milkmaids, always thinking of Damodara, roamed about comfortably.

Their limbs were plastered with the dust of cowdung instead of the fragrent pastes. All of them delighting Krishna, surrounded him as the cow elephants surrounded the intoxicated huge king of elephants.

Several other milkmaids, having the eyes like the fawns of black bucks, with their eyes beaming with love, gazed the beautiful face of Krishna but never had the satisfaction. A smile always could be seen over their faces.

The milkmaids were thirsty of the company of Krishna. They were always desirous of his company. Therefore participating in the Rasalila (divine dance) during the night, they enjoyed the beauty of his smiling face, like the nectar.

He called her saying, “O Radha, О milkmaids of Braj.” The minds of all the milkmaids on hearing the call of Krishna blossomed like the flower. The sweet words spoken by Damodara were respectfully accepted by the milkmaids.

Their well arranged hair were disarranged while performing the Rasalila and were scattered over the breasts of the milkmaids. The disarranged hair also looked pleasent at that time.

Thus during the moon lit nights of the winter season, Shri Krishna in the company of the milkmaids, performed Rasalild with comfort, and a delighted heart.

Chapter 21

Killing of Aristasura

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, after the expiry of an hour and a half during the night, when Shri Krishna was engaged in the Rasalild, at that point of time the intoxicated and arrogant Aristhasura, appeared at the site.

He was of black colour like the coal or the clouds, with sharp horns. His eyes were shining like the sun. The foreparts of his feet were quite sharp like the draggers. The black coloured Daitya appeared like the second Yama.

He was chewing the lips with his teeth, licking them with his tongue. Because of his arrogance for his strength he had raised his tail. The hump of his shoulders was quite raised and hard.

With his striking with his hump, he could raze the huge palaces to the ground. His body was so high that it was impossible for anyone to cross over it. He disturbed the cows immensely.

His waist was quite broad and the month was solid. His body and the knees were quite solid and his belly was fat. The frill of his neck was falling down. He was advancing while jumping lowering his horns.

He was becoming unstable while following the cows troubling them. Because of his attacking the trees, his developed several injuries. He felt always ready to attack with his horns, killing the opponent bulls with ease.

He had a terrific form, had become troublesome for the cows. Arriving in Braja, Aristhasura used to cause pain to all the cows in the cowsheds.

He made the cows to drop their pregnancies. Becoming wild, he united with them out of season. The unstable Daitya followed the cows who had recently litred the calves and troubled them

The horns alone were the weapons with him. He was quite awful and arrogant. He attacked the cows. The Daitya, entering the cowsheds in the form of a bull was never satisfied without a fight.

Once the horrible Daitya in the form of a bull, appeared before Krishna as well.

The arrogant Aristhasura, started causing pain to the cows. He rid the cowsheds of all bulls, cows, the calves and the cowherd boys.

At the same time the wicked Aristhana, due to move of the destiny, started terrifying the cows surrounding Shri Krishna

The wicked demon started thundering aloud, rumbling like the vajra of Indra and resembling the clouds flying in the sky, he appeared there. Shri Krishna in order to confuse him uttered a lion’s roar, patting his thigh.

Thereafter, lord Govinda rushed towards the Daitya in the form of a bull. Looking at Shri Krishna the arrogant-bull raised his tail in anger. His eyes blossomed at the same time.

With the sound produced by Shri Krishna for patting his thighs, the demon was enraged and he started thundering with the desire of entering into a fight with Shri Krishna. On the other hand Shri Krishna, with a desire to fight with the demon, did not move from his place, when he found the demon approaching him. He stood there unmoved like a mountain.

The demon concentrating his mind towards the belly of Shri Krishna, struck him with his head and with the intention of killing Krishna, the demon jumped high.

Shri Krishna of dark complxion like the collyrium appeared like the bull opposing another bull. He suddenly captured the terrific bull rushing towards him with force.

Then Shri Krishna was engaged with him in fight as a bull attacks another great bull. Breathing heavily, Aristhasura started emitting foam from his nose and the mouth.

Both Shri Krishna as well Aristhasura entangled themselves into the bodies of each other. At that point of time, they appeared like the two clouds merging into each other.

In this way Shri Krishna reduced demon’s strength, shattering his pride. Thereafter Shri Krishna placed one of his foot inbetween his horns and twisted his head as a person squeezes the wet cloth.

Then he uprooted his left horn resembling the Yamadanda and hit him over his head with the same, which killed Aristhasura.

Then he trampled over his mouth, as a result of which his neck was broken. The demon then started vomiting blood like the showering of the rains. Thereafter he fell down dead on the ground.

Finding that the intoxicated powerful demon had been killed at the hands of Shri Krishna all the people, present there, started praising Shri Krishna immensely.

Then at the time of sun set, when the moon rays were shining immensely, the lotus eyed lord Upendra, killing Vrsabhasura, again engaged himself in the divine dance.

The cowherds, for whom the cows are their livelihood, started eulogising the lotus eyed Shri Krishna as Indra is adored by all the gods.

Here ends chapter — 21, of the Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga, of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the killing of Aristhasura. (Vrs. 1-25,’P.T. = 3967)
