Battle between the armies of Yadavas and Jarasandha





Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, all the rulers, reaching the orchard of Mathura, camped there, where the people of the race led by Krishna, saw them.

Then Shri Krishna feeling mentally delighted, spoke to Balarama, «O elder brother, the task of the gods is going to be established shortly. There is no doubt about it.

Because of that all the rulers including Jarasandha have arrived here. The foreparts of the chariots which move with the speed of wind, are visible with flags.

О brother, the kings who have arrived here with the hope of victory, have the moon like canopies, which appear graceful.

What a surprise, the white Chatras held over the chariots of the rulers, look graceful like the moon and appear like the lines of geese flying in the sky, coming closer to us.

Jarasandha, the lord of earth has arrived in due time. He happens to be the touch stone of our war and the first guest of the battlefield.

O elder one, both of us should remain together on the arrival of that king. The war will be started subsequently. Let us first measure the strenght of the enemy army.

Thus speaking Shri Krishna, with a healthy mind, with a desire to wage a war, inspected the army of Jarasamdha in order to measure its strength.

The eternal Shri Krishna — well versed in mantras, foremost of the race of Yadus, looking at the enemy army, thought within himself.

These are the rulers, who are following the path suitable for the ruler and are to face bound destruction as prescribed in the scriptures.

I feel that destiny or death, has despatched these rulers to become the offerings in the Yajna of the battle. Their bodies, about to proceed to heaven, have been heaming.

The earth feeling terrorised with the armies of the main rulers. Feeling fatigued with the burden of these armies, had gone for refuge in the heaven. This action on her part was fully justified.

The communities of these armies, spreading everywhere, has crowned this place. There is no space left here. But in a short while, when all the rulers will be killed with their armies then the earth would be deserted.”

Vaisaihpayana said: О Janamejaya, thereafter, Jarasandha, the lord of all the armies and rulers, getting immensely enraged, marched forward with thousands of rulers.

At places there were well decorated beautiful vehicles, chariots looked with the war weapons. The horses moving with terrific and high speed were yoked in them. The speed of those chariots could never be obstructed at any place. (The chariotees of such types of chariots were moving ahead.

The herds of elephants were marching ahead at some sites, who were bound with golden chains. Large bells were hanging on both their sides. The elephants looked like the black clouds. The competent mahauts were driving them. The warriors, well equipped with the best of weapons were riding them.

Some of the warriors as cavalry men were riding the horses pretty well. Their steed could move with the speed of the wind. They moved on galloping as if the birds were flying in the sky.

The valorous foot soldiers were also marching on holding the swords and the shields taking to feroceous form. They marched in the groups of a thousand and while jumping, they appeared like the serpents.

In this way the four fold armies, resembling the overcast clouds, followed Jarasandha who marched forward.

He kept on marching creating thundering sound like the clouds from the chariots issuing the rumbling sound, trumpets of the elephants, neighing of the horses and thundering sound of the foot soldiers, passing through the forests and surrounding the city of Mathura.

Marching with his armies, the king Jarasandha appeared like a vast ocean. The army of the rulers, comprised of strong and well built warriors appeared like a vast ocean.

Sound emerging from the thundering of the warriors, patting of their thighs by them, resembled the thundering of the clouds. The chariots moved with the speed of the wind, the elephant resembling the clouds, the fast golloping horses, which appeared like flying in the sky and mixed up with the foot soldiers, as a result which the entire army looked quite graceful. The vast army, comprising the intoxicated elephants, carried the grace of the clouds dropping rain on the ocean during the rainy season.

All the rulers, including Jarasandha, together with their respective armies, surrounded the town of Mathura from all the sides, and started raising a contone- ment there.

The soldiers of Jarasandha, camping there, appeared graceful as the rays of the full moon fall over the waves of the ocean on full moon night, looking graceful.

After the night was over and at da) break, all the rulers woke up and desirou: of the war, assembled for launching ai attack over Mathura.

Assembling over the bank of th< Yamuna, all the rulers were seated an< waited consulting among themselves fo starting the war.

The deafening sound created by the rulers with their respective armies, broke the limitations of the thundering sound of time of dissolution when the oceans flows breaking the limits creating enormous sound.

The aged soldiers of the rulers, started roaming about hoding sticks in their hands and uttering, “All should keep quite. No one should utter a word.”

At that point of time, the form of the vast army, resembled the vast ocean from which the aquatic animals like fish and crocodiles had diappeared.

The ocean of army appeared to have become static as if it had become motionless with the strength of the Yogic practices. Then Jarasandha spoke the important and appropriate words like Brahaspati.

“The armies of the rulers, should attack atonce, surrounding the city of Mathura, by the soldiers from all the sides.

The instruments for throwing the stone balls should be activated. The mudgaras and other weapons for throwing should be taken care of. The entire land should be made even and the water should be sprinkled over it. The boer should be raised up. The darts and crowbars should be kept handy.

The city should be torn out with the use of chisels and shovels. The rulers well versed in the waging of ware, should be appropriately positioned besides them.

My warriors should surround the city of Mathura today itself, and the seige should continue, till both the cowherds boys Krishna and Balarama — the sons of Vasudeva, are killed by me with the shooting of my arrows upto that time the sky should be covered with the arrows in such a manner, making it impossible even for a bird to escape by flying.

Obeying my command, all the rulers should take positions in the areas contigious to the city of Mathura and when there be an opportunity attack the city.

Salya — the ruler of Madra, Surtayu- ruler of Kalmga, Cheketan, Vahnika, Govarda - the ruler of Kashmira, Damtavaktra — the ruler of KurUsa country, the mountain king Druma of Kinnaras, should guard the western gate of Mathura.

Venudari of Puru race, Somaka of Vidharbha, Rukmi of Bhoja dynasty, Suryaksa — the king of Malva, the princes Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti, the valorous Dantivaktra, Chhagli, Purumitra, the king Virata Malava of Kuru race, Satadhanva, Vidiiratha, Bhurisrava, Trigarta, Bana and Paucanada, should march forward towards the the north gate, and trample over the enemies, since they are competent enough to bear the attack on the fort. Their glory resembles the Vajra.

Ulhka — the son of Sakuni, Eklavya — the son of Ansuman, Brhatksatra, Ksatradharma, Jayadratha, Uttamanja, Solya, KuravamsI, the prince of Kaikeya country, Vamodava the king of Vidisha, besides Sinipati, Samkrti, should look after the eastern gate of Mathura. All of them should attack over the army, as the wind shtters the clouds.

I myself, and Sisupala, wearing the coat of arms, shall attend over the southern gate of the city.

When the city is so seized by our armies, it would be like the fall of Vajra creating terrific horror.

The carriers of clubs should fight with clubs, the carriers of parighas should fight with parighas, and with the use of several other types of weapons, the entire city should be torn out.

From today itself, all the rulers should raize to dust the city Mathura, with high buildings, making it like the plain ground.”

Thus issuing the command, making contingents of the four fold armies, Jarasandha, got ready for waging the war. He therefore attacked the Yadavas with all the rulers.

At that point of time, making the military formations of the army, the Yadavas, who were well versed in counter attack, faced Jarasandha. The war appeared awful like the war between the gods and the demons, when a few gods had to fight with a large number of demons, in which the chariots and elephants of both the sides were engaged in the struggle quite forcefully.

At that very moment, Krishna and Balarama — the sons of Vasudeva, came out of the city. At the very sight of both of them, the armies of the excellent kings were disturbed. Their vehicles were frightened and were overpowered with illusion.

Both the Yadava warriors, started roaming about hear and there, like the two enraged crocodiles, disturbing the oceanic water.

While waging the war an idea flashed in their minds, that had they got their earlier weapons, they could have fought the war quite well.

With their mere thinking like this, the divine weapons started pouring in from the sky in the battle field, which were quite strong, solid, great and issuing lustre. All the weapons were anxious to wipe out the enemies.

The carnivarous goblins and pretas were also following them. All the divine weapons were personified and vast and appeared hungry and thirsty to consume the flesh and blood of the rulers who had arrived for waging the war.

They were adored with the garlands of the divine flowers. The weapons which were illumining with their own lustre while falling from the sky, created panic in the minds of the creature flying in the sky.

The plough named Samvartaka, the club named Saunanda, Saranga the best among the bows, and the club named KaumadI, four illusiory weapons of Visnu, descended from the sky for use of both the brothers in the great war of the Yadavas.

Balarama, first of all, in the battle field, held in his right hand the plough, which moved like the serpents and was decorated with the flower garlands, it was quite pleasent to look at.

Thereafter, the valorous Samkarsana — the best among the Yadavas, who deprived the enemies of their delight, held the club known by the name of Saunanda in his left hand.

After him the valorous Shri Krishna, held the Sarang bow, which produced the sound like the thundering clouds, which was quite beautiful in the world.

Lord Krishna, to whom the gods had revealed their purpose, who eyes resembled the blossomed lotus flowers, held the famous Kaumadi — club in the other hand which reached him automatically.

Holding those weapons, both the valorous Balarama and Shri Krishna started fighting with the army of Jarasandha in the battle field.

Holding both the weapons, who were support for each other, both elder and younger brothers, facing the enemy, displayed their prowess like the great divine personalities. Both the sons of Vasudeva, roamed about in the battle field like gods.

The valorous Balarama, getting enraged, carrying the plough over his shoulders like the serpents, was roaming about in the battle ground.

The wise Balarama pushing back the crowds of the Ksatriyas displayed his anger on elephants and the steed.

Balarama, tore out the huge elephants with his plough, injured them with the club, appeared graceful in the battle ground. He churned the elephants like the mountains.

The Ksatriyas, having been defeated by Balarama retreated and took refuge with Jarasandha.

At that point of time, Jarasandha, the follower of Ksatriya — dharma, adderessed the Ksatriya thus, “Disgrace to your being a Ksatriyas, having thus retreating from the battle field.

A Ksatriya, who getting deprived of the chariots flees, from the battleground, the people of wisdom consider this cowardly- ness like facticide, which is unbearable.

О warriors, why do you flee from the battle ground in panic. Disgrace to your being a Ksatriya. Getting inspired with my words, all of you should return at once to the battle ground.

Or otherwise you stand in the battle ground with chariots as silent spectators till such time, I kill the cowherds in the battle field and send them both to the abode of Yama.”

When having been thus inspired with the words of Jarasandha, all the Ksatriya showering the rain of arrows delightfully started the war.

All of them mounted over the caprisined horses, chariots issuing the rumbling sound like the thurndering of the clouds, and the black elephants resembling the clouds, moved forward and started fighting.

All of them had coat of arms over their bodies, holding swords, banners and other weapons. All of them had sruing their bows, carrying the quivers and Tomaras.

The chatras were held over the rulers seated in the chariots. The pleasent fly whishs were being moved, The calvalry men accompanied them. All the rulers looked graceful in the battle ground.

The best of the warriors were interested in waging the war and because of that, they entered the enemy force carrying the clubs, shings for throwing pebble stones, and clubs injuring the opponents with them.

In the meantime, Shri Krishna, enhancer of the delight of the gods, mounting over the chariot with Garuda banner, attacked Jarasandha. He wounded him shooting eight arrows. He also injured his chariot with fire sharp arrows.

Jarasandha tried his best for an escape, but the valorous Krishna killed his horses also in the battle field. Finding Jarasandha in danger, his chief commander Kausika and charioteer Chitrasena arrieved in the battle ground. They tried to injure Krishna with their arrows.

Kausika injured Balarama, shooting three arrows at him. Balarama on his part with the strike of the club broke his bow in two pieces. At the same time with showering of the rain of arrows, terrorised the three enemies.

He then with the shooting of the golden arrows repeatedly injured all the warriors, there. Then the enraged Chitrasena, shot nine arrows, Kausika shot five and Jarasandha shot seven arrows and wounded them.

Observing this, Shri Krishna wounded all the three of them shooting three arrows at them. Baladeva also wounded them shooting five arrows at each one of them.

Thereafter the valorous Baledeva broke to the pieces the chariot of Chitrasena and with the use of a bhalla broke his bow also in two pieces, in the battle ground.

With the destruction of his chariot and his and the bow, Chitrasena was filled in anger and with the intention of killing Balarama holding the club, rushed towards him carrying a club in his hand.

Observing this Balarama, started showering over Chitrasena, with the intention of killing him. In the meantime the valorous Jarasandha, cut off the bow of Balarama in two pieces.

At the same time getting enraged, Jarasandha, the lord of Magadha, killed the horses of the chariot of Balarama and sent them to the abode of Yama. Then he attacked Balarama.

Balarama too pounced upon Jarasandha holding a club in his hand. Both of them fought bitterly with the intention of killing each other.

Chitrasena on the other hand, finding Magadharaja engaged with Balarama, mounted over another chariot and stopped Jarasandha from continuing the war.

Thereafter he reached in between Balarama and Jarasandha, with the army of elephants and started fighting with both the brothers.

Then the valorous Jarasandha who had been surrounded by a vast army, attacked the army of Bhojas, which was marching ahead of Balarama and Krishna.

At that time the thundering sound was heard from both the armies like the sound of the disturbed ocean, which was quite awful.

О king, tumultuous noise of Veena, kettledrums, doubledrums, couches and thousands of the musical instruments was heard.

With the thundering of the warriors, patting of the thighs, and calling with loud voice, tumultuous sound was produced. The dust produced from the chariot wheels and the galloping of the horses, was raised, which spread everywhere.

The warriors of both the sides, carrying the weapons, and the bows, stood face to face with one another in the battle ground.

In the battle ground, the charioteers, cavalry men, thousand of foot soldiers, besides the strong elephants ponced upon the opponents.

The terrific battle between the Vrsnis and the Jarasandha warriors was going in a terrific manner.

О son of Bharata, Sini, Anadhrsti Babhru (Akrura) Viprthu, and Ahuka (Ugrasena), under the leadership of Baladeva, made use of half of their army, for their own protection and attacked the enemy army from the south.

The security of that part of the enemy was attended to by Sisupala — the king of ChedI, Jarasandha including Salya and Salva, were guarding the northern side. The Yadavas discarding attachment for their own lives, started showering the rain of arrows on the enemies.

The second part of the army headed by Avagaha, Prthu, Kanka, Satadyumna, Vidaratha, and others, marched forward under the leadership of lord Krishna attacked on the left part of the enemy army.

О Rajendra, that part of the enemy army was guarded by Bhishmaha, RukamI, Devaka, Salya — the ruler of Madra, besides the valorous warriors from the east and the southern regions. All the warriors started fighting leaving the attachment for their lives. These warriors used the weapons which created the sound of lightning.

Satyaki, Chitraka, Syama, valorous Yuyudhana, Rajadhideva, Mrdura, Maharatha Svaphalaka, Satrajit, and Prasena, having been surrounded by the vast army, attacked at the tail of the Vyuha (army foundation). Getting protected by Mrdu they attacked half the part of the army. At that point of time all of them fought with several kings including Venudhari and others.

Here ends chapter — 35, of Visnu Parva of the Harivariisa Parana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata relating to the battle between Yadavas and the forces of Jarasandha. (Vrs. 1-111, P.T. = 4874)
