Departure of Krishna and Balarama towards south — meeting with Parasurama at Gomantika mountain

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening to the words of Vikadru, the glorious Vasudeva, spoke with a peaceful mind.

О Krishna, one who speaks the words of polity filled with the six merits or guides other to make use of such merits, he can be called the king. The one who well understands the cause of the secret advice, he can be called the king. The intelligent Vidruka has spoken out the purposeful words which are beneficial.

О best of the race of Yadus, Vikadru had followed the Raj dharma which besides being true is beneficial as well. Now you act in a way which is beneficial to all.”

Listening to the words of his father Vasudeva as well the noble Vidruka, Shri Krishna, who is the best of humans, spoke the excellent words with a concentrated mind.

“Whatever has been spoken out by you about the main cause of enmity, the valor of the enemy, the judicious conduct, provision of the scriptures and the future activities which are likely to happen due to the move of destiny, has been heard by me.

Now you please listen to the reply. Listening to my words, you accept them in case they appeal you. There is no doubt that a king should act according to polity. It would be appropriate for him to make use of the alternatives like alliance, conflict, meetings, dissecussion and regression.

The learned person should not live close to powerful enemy. It would be proper for a person well versed in observing the moves of time (or destiny) in order to save himself from the enemy, withdraw himself (from the disputed) place. He should wage a war in case he is competent enough to bear the burden of war.

After my departure from this place, accompanied with Balarama — my elder brother, making you as an other companion, I shall enter the eternal Daksinapatha, which is located close to Sahya mountain.

Both of us living there shall visit Karavira and the pleasent city of Kraunchpura.

Learning about our departure towards the south, Jarasandha, aspiring to be victorious, and filled with arrogance, instead of entering the city of Mathura, shall follows us.

Thereafter following us, he alongwith his army shall reach the Sahyachala and do his best to capture both of us.

The journey thus undertaken by us will benefit the race of Yadavas and shall make the people of Mathura as well as the country of Surasena, comfortable.

Inspite of my being all powerful, like a worthless person, at the present time, I have to leave this place to save our lives.

The rulers, desirous of victory, after the enemy escapes, having been captured once, then they reaching the enemy country, never feel satisfied without killing him.”

Thus speaking, both the valorous warriors Krishna and Balarama, who were well versed in polity — without any confusion moved on towards the Dakshinapatha.

Both the warriors, who could take to any form at will, moving on hundreds of paths, reaching the southern direction took to the excellent path, kept on walking ahead, with comfort.

Roaming about comfortably over the peak of the Sahyamountain, both the warriors kept on advancing over their journey on their path.

In a short time, both the brothers, reached the town of Karavira surrounded by the ranges of Sahya mountain which was inhabited by the people of their own race.

Reaching there both the brothers reached near a huge banyan tree grown with enormous roots.

Ascetic Parasurama — the son of Bhrgu was engaged in tapas under that tree. He had a battle axe hanging over one shoulder. He was clad in bark garments and wore matted locks of hair over his head. The complexion of his body was quite fair and was issuing lustre like the fire flame. He illuminated like the sun. Parasurama — the destroyer of the Ksatriyas, could never be disturbed by anyone. He appeared like the personified ocean. The task of his making offerings in the fire had already been over, but still he occasionally made offerings in the ignited fire. He took bath thrice a day as a result of which his costumes were wet. He appeared like Brhaspati — the preceptor of the gods. He had a white cow with a calf and was milked for the sake of the performing of homa. Therefore she was called as Kamadhenu. Besides this, she could produce all other things as per the desire of the sage therefore she was also called as kama-dohana or kamadhenu. In order to produce fire in the form of milk, she appeared like arani (wood) was being dragged by Parasurama, some where. He never feels tired of putting in labour and is eternal. Both Krishna and Balarama, spotted Parasurama who moved about over the mountain peak of Mandarachula like the shining sun.

After having a look at him, both the sons of Vasudeva, judiciously offered their salutation to him, placing both their hands at his feet. He appeared like the fire with flame burning over the pedestal.

Thereafter, Shri Krishna — the best of orators, and well aware of views of public, spoke to Parasurama, the great ascetic, with lovable and sweet voice.

“О lord, I understand that you are Parasurama — the gem of the race of Bhrgu and destroyer of the Ksatriya race.

О son of Bhrgu, you had pushed back the ocean, with your arrows and the distance so covered by the arrows, the land was owned by you, over which you raised the city of Surparaka.

The city was spread in the length of five hundred bows and in width of five hundred bows. (Bow is considered to be four arms in length and the arrow is half of its size. The same prosperous Janapada is located in the bower of Sahya mountain.

Transgressing the territory of the ocean, you established the vast city in the Aparanta country, located over the shore of the western ocean. It is you alone, who, having been reminded of the death of your own father, had cut off with your axe the forest of arms of kartavirya Arjuna.

All the Ksatriyas who were killed as the enemies, and the blood which flowed on earth, with the strike of your battle-axe, has drenched the earth making it muddy which is visible even today. I am aware, that you are Parasurama, son of Renuka and displayed your anger over the Kshatriyas.

Because you are still holding the battle axe which you used in the battle field. Both of us intend to enquire something from you. We are desirous of listening to your considered view on some doubtful words.

О Parasurama the great ascetic, Mathura is our living place, which is gracefully located over the bank of Yamuna. Both of us belong to Yadava race. You must be knowing us in case you have heard about us. Vasudeva — the performer of the best of vratas belonging to the race of Yadus, happens to be father of both of us.

Because of the terror of Kamsa both of us were brought up in Braj, since birth. We had been brought in Braj feeling panicky from Kamsa.

Reaching the age of boyhood, we entered the city of Mathura. Within the limits of dhrama, we killed Kamsa in Mathura in his dancing saloon, with force and his father was established over the throne as the king. Thereafter both the brothers who has been keeping up the cows as cowherds since birth, reverted to the same profession.

Thereafter the king Jarasandha resolved to make a siege around our city. Though we have fought with him bravely many times, and we had been successful in our goal as well, still for the sake of our city and the people there, and their protection, presently we have made no efforts to fight with Jarasandha. О great sage and performer of vratas, we have to collect the forces and the resources. Therefore becoming unsuccessful, we have left the place.

We have no chariots for waging the war. We are roaming on foot. We donot have weapons or the coat of arms over our bodies. Fearing the attack of Jarasandha, we two of us only have fled (from the city of Mathura).

O excellent sage, thus both of us have arrived before you. You kindly welcome us by rendering us your advice.”

Listening to the unblemished words of both of them, Parasurama of Bhrgu race and son of Renuka, replied to them in the words dubbed with dharma.

“О influential Krishna, I have arrived here alone from Aparanta, only to render advice to you. I did not allow my disciples even to come along with me.

O lotus eyed one, I am well aware of your living in Braj and the killing of Kamsa at your hands.

О Purusottama, with beautiful face, keeping in view the struggle you are going to have with Jarasandha I have arrived here to meet you with your brother.

O Shri Krishna, I know you very well. You are the protector of the world, are eternal lord and you for the sake of the task of the gods are behaving like a boy, though you are actually not so.

Whatever exists in the three lokas, is not unknown to you. (Therefore it is not necessary to render you any advice.) still having been influenced with your devotion, you please listen to whatever is spoken by me.

О Govinda, earlier your ancestors had built here the city of Karavira and had inhabited this nation.

О Shri Krishna, Vasudeva the immensely glorious one, presently lives here, and is known by the name of Shrigala.

О valorous Govinda, Shrigala, who is always filled with jealousy, has killed all the Ksatriya kings who could be his successors.

He is always filled with arrogance. He is unable to control his mind. He is extremely jealous of others. Because of the pride of his kingdom the fortunes, he has been cruel even to his own sons.

Therefore, О best of humans, I do not think it worthwhile that you stay in Karavirapur.

I am going to inform you the suitable place, staying where, you both the brothers, creating obstructions for the enemy, you can fight with Jarasandha, who is immensely powerful.

All of us, today itself, making the use of our arms, shall swim across the Veni river, shall reach an inaccessible mountain, close to this country’s border. We shall live there.

Yajnagiri is the name of that mountain which is also a range of the Sahya mountain and is a beautiful place. It is presently the den of robbers, meat eating thieves, and others performing the terrific deeds.

Various types of trees and creepers are found there. The trees are blossoming with flowers, because of which the mountain looks quite graceful. We shall stay there for a night. Thereafter, crossing the river khatvanga in which large number of touch stones are found. You may meet with welfare. The river is surrounded by a great mountain, which looks like the water fall of Ganga.

The waterfall of khatvanga is decorated is the ornament of Tapasaranya, which shall be seen by us. We shall have some snaks there and while roaming about over the beautiful and famous mountains there, shall meet the ascetic Brahmanas there, who are facing pains in carrying out the penance there. Thereafter we shall move on to the charming city of karaunchpur.

О Shri Krishna, a ruler born in your race is presently ruling that country. He always follows the dharma and is known by the name of Mahakapi. He is the lord of the Janapada of forest dwellers and the people of the place.

Without meeting that king, we shall reach the holy place of Anahad by the evening and shall stay there together.

Descending from that place, and passing through the Sahya mountain, shall reach the peak of the known Gomantaka- mountain, having many peaks.

One of its peak is so high that it looks having reached the heaven. It is difficult even for the birds flying in the sky to reach over it. It is the resting place for the gods, which is surrounded by the flames all round.

It is considered to be the ladder leading to the heaven. It is the highest peak that appears like the mountain of sky and not of the earth. The planes of the gods land there and it appears as an other mountain Meru.

Both of you, look like the gods, having the same form, besides being illustrious. Climbing of the great Gomantagiri mountain peak we shall witness the scenes of the rising and setting sun as well as the moon — the lord of stars and constellations besides the vast ocean, possessing high waves. Both of you shall roam about in the forepart of the mountain there, with comfort.

While staying over the peak of the Gomanta mountain and roaming about in the forest there, you shall overcome Jarasandha, by resorting to the Durga- yuddha (fort like war).

Finding both the valorous warriors as you are, over the mountain peak, Jarasandha would then prefer to wage the mountain war.

With the start of the terrific war there, both of you shall have the divine arms in your hands.

О Shri Krishna the gods have ordined for the fighting of a great war by Yadavas and other rulers, in which there would be the mud of blood and flesh.

The Sudarsana cakra, Sarhvartak plough, Saunanda rnHsala and Kaumadi-gada would appear before you, which are related to Visnu and shall drink the blood of the rulers like the god of death, under the influence of destiny.

О Shri Krishna, this war would be known as chakra-miisala war. The gods have prescribed the same spot for this war. This war is the command of the god of death.

О Shri Krishna, the creator of the gods as well as their expansion, all the gods and the enemies shall witness pretty well your true Vaisnava form.

O Shri Krishna, you, yourself taking to the same Vaisnava form, for the victory of the gods should receive the cakra and the gada which have been forgotton by you for long.

О Balarama — pleasing the world, for the killing of the traitors, you hold on the plough and the killer of the enemies and the rnUsala for the killing of the enemies.

О Krishna, this is the first battle which has been prescribed by the gods with the rulers of the world, in order to reduce the burden of the earth.

Here itself, you will receive, your divine weapons, Vaisnava form from Laksmi.

Hereafter, a great war would be fought on earth, using a large number of weapons, which would be known as the Mahabharata war.

Therefore О Krishna, you therefore move on to the excellent Gomantaka mountain. The victory, in the war with Jarasandha, is sure to embrace you and is present there.

You may meet with welfare. Drinking the sweet milk of my cow kamadhenu, you follow the path indicated by me.”

Here ends chapter — 39, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the departure of Krishna and Balarama towards south — meeting with Parasurama at Gomantika mountain. (Vrs.1-83, P.T. = 5136)
