Progeny of Yadu and valnerable condition of Mathura

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, after a long time, Yadu, produced five valorous sons from the wombs of the five Nagakanyas, who were suitable enough to bear the burden of the race.

They were known by the names of Mucukunda, Padmavarna, Madhava, Sarasa and the king Harita.

All the five sons were like the five elements on earth. The immensely valorous king Yadu, felt delighted on looking at them.

On attaining adulthood by all of them, they appeared like five mountains. Once getting proud of their prowess and arrogance, they standig before their father said.

“О father, we have now grown up. We are quite youthful. Therefore, we seek your command, you tell us, what should we do to please you.”

Yadu, who was powerful like the lion among the rulers, deligtfully spoke to his sons, who had force like the lions, in order to measure their strength.

My son Mucukunda should build two cities over the Vindhya and Rksavan mountains making use of the mountain land, making all the efforts.

My son Padmavarna, moving to the southern direction, should build a city over the Sahya mountain.

My son Sarasa should build a capital city on the western direction in the region having enough of the pleasent Champa trees (Michelia champacca).

Harita my son, possessing long arms known as Harita in the ocean filled with green water, shall look after the island of Dhumravarna.

My fifth son Mahdba.hu, Madhava, is the eldest and is quite religions minded one. He shall be a crown prince and look after their city.

All of them were endowed with the royal fortunes. Abhiseka of all of them was performed in separate cities. All of them were decorated with the royal symbols, besides the Chatras and the flywhisks. Thereafter at the command of the father, all the four princes who resembled the Lokapalas, proceeded on he the their respective homes. All of them searched for a place to built a capital city.

Rajarsi Mucukunda selected the middle part of the Vindhya mountain. He built his place in the area filled with huge rocks, over the bank of in accessible Narmada river.

Не cleared the area purified it making it lovely. He built a bridge of even nature and built moats filled with deep water.

In different parts of the city several temples were built, besides the roads, lanes, paths for the use of ordinary people, besides the crossings.

Mucukunda — the best of the ruler, filled the city with enough of different types of cereals, resembling the city of Indra, in a few days, which looked quite prestigeous.

The king Mucukunda who resembled the gods, named the city after him.

The city, which was located at the top of the Vindhya mountain is full of rocks and as such it will be known as of Mahismatipuri in the world.

The king Mucukunda had built the city which possessed immense grace, in the centre of the Vindhya mountain.

Thereafter, the religious minded monaral also built a city named Purika, which illumined like the city of the gods. There were hundreds of orchards and gardens in it. Besides the markets, commercial establishments and the crossings added to is granduer.

Close to the Rksavan mountain, over the bank of Narmada river, the king built a city named Purika, which was free from ailments and grief and illuminated like the city of gods.

The monarch was devoted to Dharma who built two cities which resembled the cities of heaven and then started ruling the same.

Rajarsi Padmaparna built an excellent city on the rear of the Sahya mountain, which had enough of trees and creepers over the bank of the river.

Finding that the covered area of his city was smaller than the others, he turned his entire kingdom into a city and surrounded it with a high boundary wall from all the sides. In the excellent country, the rampart walls were built in abundance.

His country came to be known as Padmavat Janapada, Karavirapura was its capital city. Following the rulers of the Silpsastras, the city was built by him.

The king Sarasa too had built the city of Kraunchapur which was quite vast and pleasent. It had a large number of Champaka and Asoka trees. It was spread in vast area, and the business of copper was carried out there, which was the source of livelihood of the people.

The glorious Janapada of the prosperous city was famous by the name of Vanavasi. The trees of all the seasons alsways blossomed, yielding several types of fruits.

Harita also started ruling the island connected with the ocean, which was quite pleasent for the ladies or looked charming because of the ladies.

The fisherman who had been deputed by king Harita were known by the names of Mudgaras, who could catch the conched plunging deep into the ocean.

The alert boatsmen collected the shining beads and coral from the deep ocean.

Nisadas were the workers of Harita, who floating over the large size boats went in the ocean and searched for the gems emerging from the ocean, (with the small boats they searched the gems and then collected them in big boats).

The boatmen living in the island collected all types of gems and lived on the fish meat.

Whatever material was extracted by means of boats from the ocean, the trades of the far off countries traded with them and a portion of their earrings was presented by them to the king Harita in the same way as the Yaksas pleased Kubera only with their earring.

In this way Yadu Varhsa is an off shoot of Iksavaku dynasty, Then it was divided into four other branches by the four younger sons of Yadu.

The king Yadu on the other hand entrusting the case of his kingdom to Madhava, the best of the race of Yadus, proceeded on to his heavenly abode.

Satvat was the popular son of Madhava. He was quite virtuous who was well established because of his royal qualities. He always hand Satvika intentions.

Bhima was the son of Satvat by which next generations were known as Bhauma. Having been born from Satvat, all of them were called as Satvatas.

When the king Bhima was established over throne of Anarta country, during that period lord Rama had been ruling the world from Ayodhya. During his rule, Satrughna, killed Lavanasura and uprooted Madhuvana.

At the site of the same Madhuvana, Satrughna, the delight of Sumitra, built the city of Mathurapuri.

At the concluding of the incarnation of Rama, and the departure of Rama, Laksmana, Bharata and Satrughna to the heavenly abode, then Bhlma achieved this centre of Vaisnavas. Because after the death of Lavana, only he was interested in that country, being the only successor of Bhilma overpowered this city and he himself started living here.

Thereafter, when Kusa was enthroned as the king of Ayodhya, and Lava was declared as the crown prince, then Andhaka the son of Bhlma started ruling Mathura.

Revata was the son of Andhaka, who succeeded him as the king. On the pleasent peak of Raivata mountain, Rksa was born. This is the origin of Raivata. All the mountains on the sea shore, came to be known Raivataka mountains after Raivata.

Visvagarbha was the glorious son of Raivata (Rksa) who was a well known and an influential ruler on earth.

O Kesava, he had three wives. All the three of them were blessed with the divine beauty. They produced four valorous sons from the king who were valorous like the lokapalas.

They were known by the names of Vasu, Babhra, Susena, and the valorous Subhaksa. They were prominent and excellent warriors of the race of Yadus, and were powerful like the second set of Lokapalas.

О Shri Krishna those rulers epanded the race of Yadus increasing their number enormously. Many of the rulers of the present world, belong to that race. Vasu (who was also known as SUra) got a son named Vasudeva. Vasudeva — the son of Vasu, is quite influential. After the birth of Vasudeva he gave birth to two illustrious girls (who came to be known as KuntI — Prtha and Sruta — Srana.) out of these two Prtha lived in the KuntI country (as the adopted daughter of the king Kuntibhoja.) KuntI resembled an apsara roaming over the earth. She was taken as chief queen of Maharaja Pandu. The illustrious Srutasrava became the chief queen of Damaghosa — the ruler of Chedi country.

О Krishna I have thus brought out the origin of the Yaduvamsa, which had been heard by me from Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa.

Govinda, the excellent one among the Yaduvamsa, presently, thus Varhsa is on the extinct, but you have incarnated like the selfborn Brahma for the redemption of this race.

We people are unable to hide you, declaring you an ordinary citizen, but you are aware of even the hidden secrets of the gods. You are omniscient besides being the creator of all.

О lord, you are competent enough to fight with the king Jarasandha. We shall always be obedient to your wisdom, performing the functions of a warrior.

But the king Jarasandha is quite powerful. He stands over the head of the rulers. He has enormous army which is beyond counting. On the other hand we have limited resource of arms and ammunitionours are also quite limited.

The city of Mathura would be unable to face the siege from all the sides even for a day because only limited stock of food and drinks is available here. The stock of wood has almost depleted. The city is in fact now surrounded by various misfortunes.

The moats around this city to be filled with water are damaged. They have not been cleaned, nor have they been repaired for long. No protective apparatus has been fixed at the entrace gates. There is urgent need for raising the thick mud walls and the pacca baundary walls around the city. The relevant area is quite vast.

All the weapon stores of the city, require immediate repairs. There is urgent need for collecting heaps of bricks. Because of the use of the city by the forces of Kamsa, no arrangements have been made by the people for their protection.

Kamsa has been recently killed. Therefore it the period of dawn for our country. As the king’s men surround in the villages for the collection of taxes, similarly in case there is the siege of the city, then it would not be able to tolerate or bear it.

Our army has been dis-spirited because of facing many wars. The enemy is harassing it, and weakening it at the same time. The country is sure to get destroyed with its people. There is no doubt about it.

With the desire to overpower the kingdom, opposing the Yadavas, have defeated many people. All of them would like to create differences among us. You should do whatever is possible under these circumstances.

Because of Jarasandha, other rulers will cheat us, because they are frightened by Jarasandha. Apprehensive of some disturbance in our country, they follow them in panic.

О Kesava, in case, all the people oppose the siege of the city, then they getting oppressed would say that they have been destroyed because of the struggle of the Yadavas.

О Krishna, this is my opinion which I have expressed because of my having faith in you. I have informed you first of all. This is not on advice for you.

О Krishna, you act accordingly in the given situation. You are the leader of the Yadava army and we are under your control. You are the main cause of this opposition, therefore, you protect us with yourself.

Here ends chapter — 38, of Visnu Parva, of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the progeny of Yadu and the valmerability of the city of Mathura. (Vrs. 1-66, P.T. = 5053)
