Crowning of Ugrasena and cremation of Kamsa

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the king Ugrasena, was grieved at heart because of the death of his son and he went to Krishna. At that point of time he was breathing heavily as if he had consumed the poison.

Не found there that Krishna was in his father’s home, surrounded by Yadavas. His face had been faded out and he was repenting for the death of Kariisa, getting worried at the same time.

Then Krishna listening to the lamenting of the wives of Kamsa, denouncing himself among Yadavas, said.

“Alas! I because of my short sightedness, have earned blemish because of anger. By killing Kamsa, I have widowed thousands of women.

One feels compassionate on the ordinary women. But at the killing of their husband at my hands, they are crying pathetically. I express my repentance to the queens, I convey my condolence to them.

By listening to the cries of these innocent women, even the heart of Yama — the god of death, would be moved.

I had decided earlier, that the killing of Kamsa would be the best course of action, because he always indulged in sinful ways and troubled the noble people. He had fallen from the noble ways, the people were jealous for him. The killing of such a person was good for the society. His death alone could relieve him from the evil path and not the life.

Kamsa always was interasted in the sinful ways. The noble people did not respect him because of his evil ways. He had fallen by earning denouncement from all. The people were jealous of him. Death for such an evil minded person would have been most appropriate.

In case the ascetics performing tapas, enjoy the fruits of heaven, it is due to the performing their noble deeds. A noble minded person earns glory even in this world and the gods of the heaven also respect him.

In case all the people are happy, and the entire populace is engaged following dharma, and the people are religious minded, then the injustice cannot touch the kings.

In case the kings suppresses the evil people, then he is well rewarded by the god of death, in the other world. Following of the dharma is most desirable for the people. Therefore the people of the world should perform noble deeds, which provide comforts in the other world.

The gods particularly protect the followers of dharma, because the sinful people are quite common in the world.

Therefore, in case Kamsa has been killed by me, my action should be taken as quite appropriate by you, because by so doing, I have completely uprooted the sin.

Therefore all of you should console these ladies who are filled with grief, the people of Mathura, the astesans, as well as these engaged in trade.”

When Shri Krishna was so speaking, the king Ugrasena, with his fallen face, accompanied with some Yadavas, entered the place. He was mentally afraid of the sins committed by Kamsa — his son.

Ugrasena, spoke in pitiable, stamming and choked voice to lotus eyed Lord Krishna, with tearful eyes, in the gathering of the Yadavas.

“O Shri Krishna, you have taken revenge from my son for the sin committed by him. You have dispatched your enemy to the abode of Yama in rage and have earned glory as per dharma, your name has been glorified in the world.

You have, also established your glory in the hearts of the noble people, frightening the enemies at the same time. You have well laid the foundation of the race of Yadus, and made your kins to be proud of you.

Your glory has illumined among the rulers. The friend will own you. The rulers of the world will take refuge with you.

The people and the ministers will follow you. The Brahmanas will praise you and shall sing your glory. The ministers who participate in compromise and conflict will offer salutation to you.

О Krishna, you accept all the riches of Kamsa besides elephant, horses, chariots, and the foot soldiers and the vast army.

О Shri Krishna whatever the riches, cereals, gems, costumes were possessed by Kamsa, let all of them be taken care of by your men. Let them also exercise their conrtrol over the ladies, vahicles, and all other fortunes of Kamsa.

О Shri Krishna, you are the destroyer of the enemies of the race of Yadus. When you have thus achieved the undesired fortunes thus, and the task has been accomplished. The land has been now under your complete control. The conflict has come to an end, and the entire earth has come under your control. Then you are the only one responsible for our grace or disgrace.

О valorous one, whatever is being spoken by the miserable people you accept our prayer. О Govinda. The sinful Kamsa has been reduced to ashes because of your anger. We desire that this noble deed should be performed by your grace.

The last rites of the dead king should be performed. Thereafter I shall proceed to the forest, with my wife and the daughter-in- law.

О Shri Krishna, it is said that the responsibility of the relatives is over, with the performing the last rites of the dead, after which, they are relieved of the worldly debt.

Therefore, I, after performing the last rites of Kamsa at the cremation ground, offering oblation to him, shall be relieved of that debt. This is my wish.

О Shri Krishna, this is my request to you. You extend your affections towards me on this account. I have heard that in case the cremation is performed over the funeral pyre, the dead achieves the best of place in the other world.”

On hearing the words of Ugrasena, Shri Krishna was immeeuselly surprised consoling Ugrasena, he replied to him thus.

“О adorable one, whatever has been spoken by you is quite appropriate to the time.

Whatever has happened in the past was destined to happen. It is difficult to move against the destiny. (Still I have felt painful at you words.) Even after his death, Kamsa would receive the royal treatment from myside. (I can assure you for that).

О adorable one, you have been born in a high family. You have received the knowledge of the Vedas. Then how is it, that you fail to understand that it is extremely difficult move against the destiny.

О lord of earth, all the mobile and immobile creations of the world, have to reap the rewards of their earlier deeds.

О adorable one, О best of rulers, you are well versed in the Vedas, who are extremely wealthy, those devoted to charities, beautiful to look at, devoted to Brahmnas, well versed in polity, compassionate on the miserable people, glorious like the lokapalas, valorous like Mahindra, have to fall prey to the god of death.

Those who had been religious minded, well aware of all the sentiments, devoted to the upliftment of the people, devoted to the dharma of Ksatriyas, and those who have controlled the sense organs, had to face the jaws of death.

The noble or evil deeds performed by a person become apparent on earth in the form of pleasure or pain.

This is the invisible Maya (illusion) of the lord, which influences the world. It is difficult for the gods even to well realise his true form. In reality one has to face the pleasure or pain as a result of his past deeds.

Kamsa, having been influenced with his past deeds, has been killed by the destiny. I am in fact not the cause for the same. The deeds and the destiny are responsible for the same.

О adorable one, the entire earth is like the sun and the moon. Facing death with the moves of the destiny, one is reborn with the move of destiny as well.

It is the destiny which all the living beings besides showering the grace on them. Therefore all the living being are controlled by the destiny.

О king, your son has been burnt by his own deeds. It is the destiny who is responsible for his death and not I.

Or otherwise, I could be the cause of his death, at the most. There is no doubt about it. Because what could the destiny do without the cause or the means.

О king, the destiny is most powerful. The position beyond the destiny is unknowable. Those who are aware of the difference between Purusa and Prakrti can achieve the same. This is the final goal of destiny and as such everything is controlled by the destiny.

О adorable one, you better act as per my advice. О king, I am not interested in the kingship, nor am I desirous of the same. I have not killed Kamsa for the sake of kingship.

Whatever has been done by me has been done for the benefit of the people and the glory. I have killed with my brother, your son who was the deformed limb of the race.

I shall again roam about as a forest i Iweller, in the company of the cows and the cowherds, delightfully, as a wild elephant ioams about in the forest.

I take an oath on truth, repeating this a hundred times, that I have nothing to do with the kingdom. You better get an announcement made in this respect.

You are the lord and the foremost of the race of Yadus, besides being respectable for me as well. Therefore you have to be the king. You better get yourself crowned as the king over your kingdom. Let you be victorious.

In case you have to perform a task that is dear to me, or in case your mind in not painful due to me, then you accept this kingdom which has been returned by me.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening to the words of Shri Krishna, Ugrasena kept silent. Feeling shameful, stood there lowering his head. Lord Govinda - who was well-versed in dharma crowned Ugrasena, as the king of the king, of the Yadavas.

Adorning his head with the crown, Ugrasena, performed the last rites of Kamsa in the company of Shri Krishna.

At the command of Shri Krishna, all the chief Yadavas followed the paths of Mathura town, in the same way as the gods follow Indra.

When the night was over, at the time of day break, all the prominent Yadavas made arrangements for the cremation of the body of Kamsa.

They placed the body of Kamsa in a palanquin, put his body to flames observing all the rites.

The body of the prince Kamsa was brought over the northern bank of the river Yamuna and after the lighting of the funeral pyre, his body was consigned to flames, observing all the rites.

Similarly all the Yadavas, in company of Krishna, put the body of Sunama — the brother of Kamsa to flames.

The people of the Andhaka and Vrsni races, offered oblation for both of them, repeatedly saying, that the water so offered should become eternal for the deceased.

Shri Hari and Ugrasena — the best of the rulers, perfomed Sraddha for Kamsa and gave, crores of gold coins, many cows, gems, costumes and villages resembling the towns in charity. They repeadely prayed to the Brahmanas, “The charities performed by us should be ever lasting for the departed soul.

Thus offering oblation of water for Kamsa and Sunama, the Yadavas with subdued hearts, making Ugrasena to lead them, entered the town of Mathura.

Here ends chapter — 32, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the crowining of Ugrasena as the king and cremation of Kamsa. (Vrs.1-64, P.T. = 4696)
