Balarama and Shri Krishna receive education from Sandlpani — the preceptor

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, valorous Shri Krishna accompanied with Balarama — the son of Rohinl, started living in the city of Mathura, which was inhabited by Yadavas, quite comfortably.

He had attained the youthful age. The valorous Krishna, illuminated with royal fortunes, started roaming about in the city of Mathura, adorned with all the ornaments studded with gems.

After some time both Krishna and Balarama, went to the city of Avanti, for receiving education from the preceptor Sandipani, who was born in Kasl.

Both of them had gone there to receive education in archery. Revealing their gotra to the preceptor, they started living in the asrama following the descipline of the asrama.

Both Krishna and Balarama, always remained ready to follow the command of the preceptor. There was hardly any paiticle of arrogance in them. The preceptor of Kail country accepted them and imported to them the spotless knowledge.

Both of them were excellent in receiving education. They could understand things, by listening to them once only. During the sixty four days and nights, they completed the study of the Vedas with six of their artgas.

The preceptor educated them both in a very short time, giving diksa, besides sangraha, Siddhi (success) and prayoga (application). Besides these four steps, the preceptor, educated them in archery, use of arms with the related secrets.

Taking into consideration their divine or super natural intelligence, the preceptor was convinced, that both the sun and the moon had come to him in the form of Shri Krishna and Balarama.

The preceptor also visualised both of them at the time of festivitus, in the images under adoration, as lord Visnu.

О Bharata, after prosecuting the studies, both of them were successful and they prayed to their preceptor, about the gurudaksina to be given at the end of the studies.

Visualising the influence of both of them, the delighted preceptor said to them, “My son died while drowning in the ocean of salt water. Your better get him for me. This is what I desire.”

I had only one son. He, at the time of pilgrimage, was killed at Prabhasa, by a big fish known by the name of Timi. You better get him back.

Thereafter, with the permission of Baladeva, Shri Krishna said to his preceptor, “very well.” Thereafter, Shri Hari rushed to the seashore and alone entered the oceanic water.

At that point of time the ocean appeared before him with folded hands. Shri Krishna asked him, where is the son of the sage Sandipani?”

The Ocean said: “О Madhava, а demon named Pancajanya had swallowed the child taking to the form of a big fish.

Then lord Purusottama, who never fell from glory, went to the demon Pancajanya and killed him. But he could not find the son of his preceptor.

After killing the demon Pancajanya, Shri Krishna got a couch from that place, which came to be known as Panchajanya to the to the gods as well the humans.

From there lord Purusottama went to the abode of Vaivasvata Yama. Yama on his part at once arrived before Shri Krishna and offered his salutation to him.

Then Shri Krishna said, “You give me back the son of my preceptor. (But Yama refused to do so.) Then both of them fought a great war.

Acyuta Purusottama, got victorious over Yama and received back the son of his preceptor.

Shri Krishna then brought back the son of his preceptor, who had died long back. With the influence of immensely illustrious Shri Krishna the son of his preceptor who died long back, was brought back to life.

Observing the impossible, unthinkable and surprising deed, the living beings were surprised very much.

Lord Krishna who happens to be the lord of Laksmi as well as the lord, returned with the son of the preceptor and a large quantity of gems.

Then Krishna the younger brother of Indra, got a large number of voluable gems from the demons and presented them to his preceptor.

Both the brothers Krishna and Balarama, achieved complete profeciney in the use of goda and parigha, besides other weapons. Both of them were considered to be the best and foremost of all the archers of the world.

Shri Krishna with a broad mind, getting delighted, handed over the son of the preceptor Sandipani, in the same age and condition to his preceptor Sandipani.

О king, then Sandipani, who was born in the country of Kasi, met his son who died long time back, felt extremely delighted, and praised both the brothers Krishna and Balarama.

Both the valorous brothers, sons of Vasudeva, receiving education in the use of arms, rerturned to the city of Mathura, with the permission of preceptor.

At that point of time, Ugrasena-with all other Yadavas came forwards and welcomed both the brothers.

The business community, the people of the city, the priests, contries, the old and young, of the city rushed to receive Krishna and Balarama.

The musical instruments started playing in delight. All the people started praising Krishna. The streets and lanes of Mathura looked graceful, with flags and banners.

With the return of Govinda in Mathura, like Indra, returning to the heaven, the entire town as well as the inner appartments of the palace were filled with delight, adding grace, to the same.

The singers started singing songs over the kings ways, feeling delighted. At that point of time the story which was dear to the Yadavas, was sung everywhere in the town that, “O citizens both the brothers Krishna and Balarama who are well known in the world have arrived in Mathura. All of you are now fearless and enjoy with your kiths and kins.

With the presence of Govinda in Mathura, there was none suffering from misery, no one was dirty or deprieved of consciousness.

The birds were chirping sweetly. The cows, bulls, horses and the elephants were quite healthy. All the men and women felt comfortable.

The cool and pleasent wind blew. No dust was raised in the ten directions. The gods lived in all the temples with comfort.

With the return Shri Krishna in Mathura all the pleasent symptoms appeared there, which had appeared earlier in Satyayuga.

Thereafter in the auspicious time Shri Krishna the subjugator of the enemies, seated in a chariot driven by horses, entered the town of Mathura.

At times of entry in the city of Mathura, by Shri Krishna, the opposser of the enemies, the people of Mathura followed him in the same way as the gods follow Indra.

Thereafter both the brothers, who delighted the race of Yadus, entered the place of Vasudeva. At that point of time, their faces were beaming with delight and they appeared like the sun and the moon reaching the Meru mountain. They (Krishna and Balarama.) were possessing immense lustre and they possessing the pleasent forms, placing the weapons at the appropriate place started roaming about in the town at will.

Both the sons of Vasudeva, started walking in the orchard, the trees of which were bent with weight of the fruits.

Both of them having been surrounded with the Yadavas, roamed in the contigeous regions of the Raivataka mountain, which were filled with lotus leaves and the ducks — were issuing sweet notes, over the banks of the rivers with spotless water.

The faces of both of them were quite pleasent and serena. Both the brothers were made of one and the same tattva. The forces of both them quite pleasent. They lived in Mathura for some time, following Ugrasena.

Here ends chapter — 33, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the receiving of education by Balarama and Sn Krishna, from Sandlpani and their return to Mathura, thereafter. (Vrs. 1-45, P.T. = 4741)
