Defeat of Jarasandha and arrival of Krishna and Balarama at karavirapura





Vaishampayana said: Finding the arrival on earth of both the sons of Vasudeva, there was a panic in the armies of the rulers. The vehicles of the army were in confusion.

Both the princes of Yadu race, getting enraged, using their arms as the weapons, started roaming in the vast army like the two crocodiles disturb the oceanic water, while swimming in it.

Entering the battle field both the Yada- vas invoked their old weapons for use there.

Then in the midst of thousands of rulers, both of them, desirous of waging the war, who looked glorious there, received the weapons from the sky, which had been used by them in the war at Mathura.

During the turmoil of war, shining and illustrious weapons, which could consume the enemies, fell from the sky. Those weapons had been left by the Yadava princes at Mathura itself, the same divine weapons were received by them.

The carnivorus, goblins and pretas also followed those weapons. All the weapons reached the battle field for the consuming the blood and flesh of the rulers, like hungry and thirsty persons.

All of them were adorned with the garlands of divine flowers. Shining with their own lustre making graceful all the ten directions, they were frightening the living beings of the sky.

Samvartak plough, mUsala named Saunanda, Sudarsana chakra and KaumadI gada were the forceful weapons of Krishna and Balarama, which had discended from the sky, for the use of the two Yadavas.

First of all Balarama received in the battle field the beautiful plough, which could crawl like a serpent and was decorated with garlands of divine flowers, in his right hand.

Then the foremost of the race of Yadus, received in his left hand the excellent miisala known as Saunanda, which could deprive the enemies of their pleasure.

Thereafter, Shri Krishna received the Sudarsanacakra in his right hand which was shining like the sun.

Then Shri Krishna also recieved the Saranga bow which could create the thundering sound in the world and held it in his hand.

Then the gods, who had expressed their purpose, the same Shri Krishna, having lotus like eyes, received the Kaumadi club in this other hand.

Both Balarama and Shri Krishna having the form of Visnu were well equipped and started fighting the enemies in the battle field.

After receiving the weapons, both the brothers were forms of each other and depended on each other.

No one was comparable with them in the battleground. Both of them represented the form of Visnu and becoming all powerful were displaying their prowess like lord Isvara (Siva).

Balarama, having been filled with rage, like the serpents, carrying the plough like the Nagaraja, started roaming about in the battle ground like the god of death for the enemies.

The powerful Balarama, pushing back the chariots of the Ksatriyas, displayed his anger over the elephants and the horses. Balarama who appeared quite attractive in the battle field, tossed the elephants with his plough and killed them with miisala. Thus he killed all the mountain elephants.

The Ksatritya soldiers, getting defeated at the hands of Balarama, rushed to Jarasandha (and reported the matter to him).

Then Jarasandha who had been surrounded by the Ksatriyas spoke to them,” Disgrace to you О Ksatriyas by so fleeing from the battle field.

The intelligent people discribe such behaviour in the battle ground as cowardise, which amounts to freticide.

This cowherd is devoid of strength and is standing in feet (like a foot soldier) besides being alone. Then why are you fleeing in terror from him. Disgrace to your being a Ksatriya.

Enthused with my command, all of you should at once attack the enemy. By that time I shall despatch these cowherds to the abode of Yama, killing them.”

Thereafter enthused by the words of Jarasandha, all the Ksatriyas showering the rain of arrows, took their positions for fighting the war. All of them started marching forward mounted over the caprisoned horses, the chariots shining like the moon, and black elephants resembling the clouds and driven by the Mahauts.

The coats of arms were decorating their bodies and they held swords in their hands. They were decorated with ornaments, and were clad in costumes. They had broken the bows. They also had the bows and the quivers filled with arrows.

The rulers who were scattered over the chariots, had the high umbrellas held over their heads. The charming fly whisks were being moved over them. Thus they all looked quite graceful.

Descending in the battle field, the sons of Vasudeva who were quite valorous, looked anxious for waging the war.

Both the brothers started fighting terrific war with the enemy. A large number of arrows were being shot. With the striking of the gadas, the ferociousness had increased.

Thereafter facing thousands of arrows shot by the enemies. Both of them, desirous of waging the war stood there in the battle uninoveable like the mountains. Bearing the arrows shot by the enemy like the rain.

Both the Yadava warriors were unmoved inspite the enemy attack with clubs, gophanas (throwing of balls).

Thereafter, the cloud complexioned Shri Krishna, the holder of couch, cakra and club, getting inspired from the wind, marched forward like the fire in flames.

The valorous Madhusiidana, being illustrious, using the cakra shining like the sun and reduced the soldiers, the elephants, horses and huge chariots to pieces.

The kings were killed with the striking of the clubs and by dragging with the plough. They lost their senses and could not stand in the battle ground.

Some of the rulers were cut off with the blades of cakra and they could not march forward in the battle ground.

The elephants, having been wounded with the striking of musalas, the sixty years old elephants, having lost their lustre, were crying with pain like the clouds without water.

With the fire flames emerging out of Sudarsana chakra, many cavalry men were scorched and the foot soldiers were lying on the ground. The life had departed out of their bodies and they appeared as having been killed with the striking of vajra.

Having been burnt with the strike of the plough and cakra the entire army was tomout and was lying on the ground as if all of them were killed at the time of dissolution.

The rulers were unable to have a look at the sporting ground of the divine weapons, which appeared there in die battle ground.

Several of the chariots had been trampled upon. Several of the rulers had been killed as many of them were lying there with a broken skulls, scattered here and there.

Huge disturbance was created by the cakra and the plough. Several incidents indicative of disturbance by the demons started appearing.

The number of the humans, elephants, those mounted over the chariots and the horses, who were crying or who had been torn out and were crying, was difficult to ascertain.

The land was soaked in blood of the rulers and looked like a damsel with her limbs painted with red sandal.

The earth was littered with the hair, bones, fat and intestines, besides the severed hands. The blood issuing from them was spreading over the ground.

The battle ground looked quite horrible. The humans and their vehicles were being destroyed. The inauspicious howling sound of the she — jackals was always echoing in the battle ground. It was even terrific to look at.

The pathetic cries of those wounded were spreading everywhere. Several kundas of blood were formed. The battle ground with the caracasses of elephants looked like the sporting ground of the god of death.

At place the served arms of the warriors were scattered, at places large number of warriors were lying dead and at places the caracasses of the dead horses were lying there. The cawing of crows, the sound of cries of skylarks, vultures was echoing in the battleground.

The place where the great monarchs were being killed, death there became an ordinary thing. Shri Krishna, like the god of death was wandering in the battleground.

The Cakra which was shining like the sun of the time of dissolution besides the black gada, were held by him in his hands, Shri Krishna standing in the battle ground, spoke to the rulers.

“O valorous warriors, with elephants and horses, why are you not fighting the war now? Making a firm resolve for the waging of the war, why are you now fleeing from the battle ground? I am standing here on foot with my elder brother in front of you.

Jarasandha who is known to you as a faultless ruler and who is bringing you here, where has he gone? Why does he not appear before us”?

At those words spoken by Krishna, the monarch Darada appeared to face Balarama, carrying the plough.

As the farmer talks to bull, similarly Daradu — with red eyes spoke to Balarama. «O Rama, the killer of enemies, come on, you can fight with me.”

Both Balarama and Darada were the excellent warriors and both of them started fighting with each other in the battle field like the fighting of the two elephants.

Then Balarama, killed Darada with the attack of the plough over his shoulder.

With the strike of the musala by Balarama, the head of Darada was sunk in his body. He shouted and then he fell down over the ground like a mountain.

After the killing of the monarch Darada, Jarasandha started fighting a terrific battle. Both the valorous warriors holding their gadas in their hands fought the war like Indra fought with Vrtrasura.

Both of them rushed holding gadas in hands, shaking the earth, appeared like two mountains with their peaks.

At the start of the fight between both of them, others stopped fighting. Jarasandha was well known for fighting with the gada and so was Balarama. Both of them rushed to each other for attack.

Both of them were the best of acaryas in the use of gada in battle. Both of them attacked over each other like the intoxicated wild elephants.

At that point of time, the gods, Gandharvas, siddhas, Maharsis, thousands of apsaras, arrived there for the witnessing of the war.

O king, the sky at that point of time looked quite graceful with the presence of the gods, Yaksas, Gandharvas, Maharsis, as if having been surrounded with the constellations.

The king, Jarasandha pounced upon Balarama, with a trick from the left, while Baladeva attacked from the right.

Both of them were well-versed in the use of gadas in the battle and the started attacking each other as the two intoxicated elephants attack with their tusks. Thus fitghting, they created thundering sound, which was spread in all the directions.

The sound of the attack of Balarama resembled the thundering sound of vajra. The sound of the attack of Jarasandha’s gada appeared like the shattering of the mountain.

As the wind cannot shake the Vindhya mountain, similarly the gada of Jarasandha could not shake Balarama.

The force of the gada of Balarama was borne by Jarasandha with utmost patience and neutralised it with his training in that art.

At that point of time, a clear divine voice was heard from the sky, which said, “O Balarama, you maintain the prestige of others, Jarasandha cannot be killed at your hands. Therefore donot be sorry. The cause of his death has already been created by me. Therefore, you stop fighting with him. Jarasandha shall to meet the end of his life shortly.”

Listening to the divine voice, Jarasandha felt painful at heart and he did not attack Balarama thereafter. Both the warriors disengaged themselves from fighting. Prior to that the warriors of Vrsni race fought with enemy kings for long. When the king Jarasandha started fleeing after his defeat, then his entire army deserted him. His heavy chariots also retreated.

Those rulers were feeling extremely panicky like the deer when smelt by the tiger. Therefore all of them taking care of their elephants, steed, and chariots fled away from the battle field.

Their pride had been shattered, the carnivorus birds of prey and the wild animals had been left in the battle ground, which created horibble sight.

At the fight of the prominent charioteers, thus Damaghosa the ruler of Chedi country, having been reminded of his relations with Yadavas followed Shri Krishna alone.

О Sinless Janamejaya, Krishna had been surrounded by the armies of KurUsa and Chedi countries. Therefore the ruler of Chedi country in order to develop relations with Shri Krishna said to Krishna.

“O son of Yadava race, I am the husband of your father’s sister. I have arrived before you with my army. О lord, you are quite dear to me.

I had asked this foolish Jarasandha, that he should dissuade himself from fighting with Shri Krishna (you) in this form. But he did not care for my words.

He had denounced me for these words of mine. Therefore I have severed my relations with him. Getting defeated from you in the battle, he is now fleeing from this place, with his associates.

But this monarch is not returning to his country, disowening his enmity. Therefore he would display his treachery again.

Therefore, you should at once leave this place which is filled with dead humans. The terrific creatures have surrounded it. This place is now suitable for the demons alone.

Therefore, let all of us move to Karvirapura. The king Shrigala and Vasudeva live there. Let us meet them.

I have got these two chariot ready for both of you in which the fast galloping stead have been yoked. All their parts including the wheels, axles and the yokes are quite strong.

Let you face welfare. You should mount the chariot with Baladeva since we are in a hurry to meet the king Shrigala.”

Vaishampayana spoke — О Janamejaya, at that point of time, Shri Krishna on hearing the words of the husband of his father’s sister, the king of Chedi country, Shri Krishna felt delightful in his heart and he said.

“We have been fed up with war. You speaking the words like one’s own kith an kin, have graced us immensely. Your words are quite appropriate to rime and place.

О ruler of Chedi country, it is difficult to get the people who can speak the sweet and appropriat words suiting to the time and the place.

O lord of Chedi country with the mere meeting with you we feel we have acquired a protector for us. When we have the relatives like you present here, then nothing is beyond our reach.

O ornament of the Chedi dynasty, with your association we shall be able to subjugate Jarasandha and other kings associated with him.

О best among the Chedis, you are the most intimate relative of the people of Yadu race, as compared to other rulers. From now onwards you may have to witness manywars.

The rulers living on the waging of the wars, who would remains alive in this world, they would always discuss this wheel and club being used in the wars.

The defeat, the rulers had to face near Gomantaka by the rulers at our hands, by listening or remembring of it people shall go to heaven.

Therefore, О Maharaja — the king of Chadi country, now, we following the path pointed out by you, for our welfare, shall follow it and reach Karavlrapur.

Then all the three of them, like the three burning flames, mounting over the chariots driven by the steed galloping like the wind moved over the broad path.

The divine like warriors, spending three nights on the way, reached the excellent city of Karavlrapur. For their own benefit, all of them camped at a suitable place.
