Attack of the army of Jarasandha, the mountain put to flames while Krishna and Balarama escape by jumping from the mountain peak

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, thereafter, Jarasandha, the great king of rulers arrived there. The other rulers followed him with their respective armies.

There were chariots, the strong horses of which had been trained by experts and in which the weapons useful for war had been loaded which moved on. The movement of those chariots could never be obsructed.

At places large herds of elephants were marching on which had been caprisoned with chains. Huge bells were hanging on both sides of elephants. All the elephants looked like the clouds. The were being driven by excellent mahauts and they had been decorated with excellent warriors.

At places the cavalrymen were riding the horses. Their steed galloped like the wind, and marched forward flying in the air, like the birds.

The foot soldiers were also the best of the warriors, holding the swords and the shields they marched forward. They marched in the groups of a thousand warriors each and jumped like the serpent freeing itself from its skin.

Thus like the clouds flying in the sky, accompanied with the fourfold army, the immensely valorous king Jarasandha, marched forward for a war.

The king Jarasandha accompanied with the ocean of army, with the chariots issuing rumbling sounds from the wheels, trumpeting elephants, neighging horses and the thundering foot soldiers. The sound so produced echoed in all the directions, besides the mountain caves. He appeared like an ocean with his army.

The armies of the rulers comprised of strong and well-built soldiers. With the sound produced, by thunders of soldiers, their patting the thighs, resembled the thunder of the clouds.

The chariots moved with the speed of the wind, the elephants resembling the black clouds, the horses resembling the white clouds, the foot soldiers were wearing the coats of arms. Thus the mixed army looked graceful from all the sides. The army comprising of the intoxicated elephants, appeared like the drops of rain in the ocean during the rainy season.

Jarasandha and the other rulers made arrangements to surround the mountain from all the sides and camping there.

The camping army of Jarasandha, appeared like the oceanic waves on the fullmoon light.

Then at the end of the night, all the soldiers of the army woke up besides the rulers. Performing the welfare ceremonies. All of them, thought of climbing the mountain for waging the war.

All the kings sat over the mountain peak collectively and started discussing among themselves anxiously for starting the war.

The terrific sound produced by the rulers with their armies resembled the flowing of the oceans at the time of dissolution, submerging the seashore.

The stick holder old soldier, wearing long coats and turbans, declared the royal command, “No one would utter a word. All should keep quite.”

At that point of time, the motionless soldiers of army, appeared like the silent pacific ocean, the fish and other aquatic animals of which had disappeared in the water.

The ocean like army appeared as having became motionless as if with the force of yoga, then Jarasandha who was well versed in polity like Brhaspati spoke important words.

The armies of the rulers should attack at once and the ocean of army should surround the mountain from all the sides.

The Yantras which throw stones should be commissioned. The throwers and mudgaras should be well guarded. The Prdsas and the ttoaras should also be raised.

In order to make the enemy attack infructuous, the useful and light balls should be made for the throwing, by the cartisans.

The intoxicated warriors should act as per the command of Sisupala.

The mountain should be tom out with the chisels and the shovels. The rulers who are well versed in warefare should remain attentive here at suitable positions.

From today onwards my soldiers should surround the mountain, which should be continued till the sons of Vasudeva are not killed.

This mountain is made of rocks and is therefore immoveable, but the birds nestling over the trees of the mountain should be incapicitated with the use of arrows. The sky should be so covered with the arrows that even the birds are unable to fly there.

At my command, all should remain in attention over mountain paths, and availing an opportunity should climb it.

Salya the king of Madra country, Srutaya — the king of Kalinga, Chekitan, Bahnika, Gonarda - the ruler of Kashmir, Dantavakta — the ruler of Kurusa country, Druma the king of Kinnaras and the warriors of the mountainous region, should attack from the western side.

Venudari of Puru dynasty, Somaka of Vidarbha, Rukmi — the lord of Bhojas, king Suryaksa of Malwa, Vinda and Anuvinda - the princes of Avanti, the valorous Dantavaktra, Chhagali, Puramitra, king Virat, Bana and Pancanada, are the rulers who can face the battle of forts. They should trample the enemy and should attack the northern region. Their glory is like vajra.

Uluka — the son of Sakuni, VIra the son of Ansuman, Ekalavya, Drdhasva, Ksatradharma, Jayadratha, Uttamouja, Salva, Kairaleyausika, Vamadeva — king of Vidisha, valorous Suketu, should take care of the eastern part of the mountain. All of them, should attack the enemies and shatter them as the wind shatters the clouds.

Myself, Darada, Sisupala — the king of Chedi, wearing the coats of arms, shall shatter the southern region of the mountain.

Thus the mountain having been so sieged by our armies shall be terrified like the attack of vajra.

The holders of clubs should fight with clubs, the users of parighas should fight with parighas and the other warriors should fight using various types of weapons and reduce the mountain to pieces.

The mountain has enough of uneven rocks should be made even, with your collective efforts and make to plain today itself.

Listening to the words of Jarasandha, the rulers surrounded the Gomantaka mountain from all sides in the same way as the ocean has surrounded the earth from all sides.

At that point of time, DamaGhosa — the ruler of the Chedi country, resembling Andra — the lord of gods spoke to Jarasandha, “O king, the excellent mountain is quite inaccessible. To fight here would be of no use.

Tall trees and the thorny bushes have been grown over its peaks, therefore to climb over this mountain would be a difficult task. In my opinion collecting the huge quantity of wood dry leaves and hay, should be spread around the whole of the mountain and the fire should be ignited all round it. This task should be done expeditiously. Any other effort made in this direction is not going to yield any result.

Because the Ksatriyas have tender bodies and can fight in the battle with bows and arrows, (and dumbing over the mountain is quite difficult for them). Presently they have been commanded to climb the inaccessible and difficult terrain and fight with the foot soldiers. (This is difficult for them) О excellent one, this mountain cannot be shattered by surrounding or climbing over it.

The process of war that is adopted by surrounding the forts, is rewarding because (with the depletion of the eatables in the fort, the fall of the people inside becomes imminent. But for the mountain dwellers always have enough of eatables available with them. When the stock of food and water gets exhausted, only then the dwellers of the mountains can be defeated.

The idea that our number is quite large and opponents are in small number, would be yielding no good reward.

Both the warriors of the race of Yadus, are ready for the war. Therefore we should not neglect them. No one is aware of their full strength. It is heard that both of them are valorous like the gods.

By their activities they appear to be eternal and invincible, because in their childhood itself, they had been quite strong. The best of the boys of the race of Yadu, had performed astonishing and difficult deeds in their childhood.

Therefore placing the drywood, bushes and leaves around the mountain, the fire should be ignited, as a result of which both of them getting fanited would be reduced to ashes.

In case, both of them burning with fire, pass by us, then all of us shall kill them collectively. In this way both of them would be deprived of their lives.

The ruler of the Chedi country, who spoke words which were been beneficial for the other rulers, which were appreciated by all others.

They then collected the dry wood hay and the dry trees, spreading which they put the mountain to flames. At that point of time the mountain was surrounded by the fire flames appeared like the cloud surrounded by the sun rays.

Thereafter, hastily walking ahead with speaed the fire spread quickly according to the direction of the wind. Soon the mountain was engulfed by fire flames from all the sides.

The fire went in flames with the force of the wind, which started rising up and started adding to the glory of the sky with the smoky flames.

The heaps of the dry logs were the base, the fire with the force of the wind started reducing to ashes the beautiful Gomantak mountain from all the sides.

The mountain was getting burnt with the flames of fire and the huge rocks started getting lose. (The stones started cracking with the heat of the fire. Hundreds of slabs were reduced to hundreds of pieces, and appeared like the fall of huge comets.

The flames of fire were rising upwards, engulfed the entire Gomantaka mountain from all the sides, in the same way as the sun engulfs the clowds with its rays.

The heated metals, the burning trees, the disturbed wild animals, the mountain looked like crying with pain.

The mountain after having been burnt with fire, made the streams of the melted metals like the gold, silver etc besides the juices to flow on earth.

Though the entire mountain had been exposed with the burning of the fire flames, still the peak of it was filled with smoke because of which the mountain had lost its glory. It appeared like a cloud drowning in the ocean.

Its stone rocks had been separated and fallen. The rain of glowing clouds were falling. Because of its vomiting fire, the mountain at that time appeared like the cloud throwing the comets.

The sources of the springs had dried up. The middle part of the mountain was covered with smoke. In that condition the mountain appeared like having been burnt with the fire of the time of dissolution.

On the mountain, the disturbed snakes started emerging from the small holes. They were half burnt. Their eyes were ferocious

On the mountain, the disturbed snakes started emerging from the small holes. They were half burnt. Their eyes were ferocious looking and they were issuing hissing sound from hoods.

The lions and the tigers were scattered with fire flames and getting disturbed besides being agitated they were jumping in the sky and were falling head on over the ground, while crying.

With the burning of the trees, the juice inside them started flowing like water.

The wind rising above, mixed with ashes and the glowing coal, turning reddish, started blowing. Then it reached the sky and looked like the cloud.

The birds and the wild animals started running deserting it. The great mountain with the excess of fire flames felt disturbed.

The heaps of slabs getting removed (from their original places) burning with fire, were thrown here and there as if they had been scattered with the strike of the vajra of Indra.

Putting the great mountain to flames, organising themselvse in a vyuha the Ksatriya, feeling the heat retreated half a krosa backward.

While burning, the great mountain, got destroyed with huge trees and because of the clouds of smoke emerging from it, it became difficult to look at it. Its base started shattering. Then Balarama, the killers of Madhu and KesI Daityas, said to lotus eyed Krishna in anger.

“O brother Krishna because of the developing of the enmity with us, the powerful rulers are burning the mountain with its trees.

О Shri Krishna look here, the elephants are crying while truempeting in the forest which is filled with smoke.

О brother, in case the mountain Gomantaka is burnt for the sake of two of us, then we are sure to earn blemish for the same, which would be disgraceful.

Therefore, о best of the warriors, you remain unmoved in the battle field like the mountain, in order to get free from the debt of Gomantaka, we shall kill the Ksatriyas with arms alone.

О brother, these Ksatriyas after burning the mountain, adorned with the coats of arms, mounted over the chariots look anxious for waging the war”.

Thus speaking like the moon discending from the Meru mountain, the illustrious and youthful Balarama, wearing the garland of flowers, jumped from the peak of the mountain.

At that point of time he was overpowered with the influence of Kadambari (drink). He was clad in blue garments. His face had a fair complexion. The beautiful crown was adoring his head. He was beaming like the moon of the winter season. A garland of forest flowers was falling over his belly.

One of his ear was adorned with a beautiful ear ring. Balarama the elder brother of Krishna then jumped from the mountain top and fell into the group of rulers on the ground.

After the jumping of Balarama, illustrious and valorous Krishna having dark complexion like the cloud, also jumped from the peak of the Gomantaka mountain.

Before jumping, Shri Hari, pressed the mountain a bit with his feet, with the pressure the mountain was plunged into water from all the sides. Each and every slab of the mountain was bathed in water. The water started emerging from the springs like the fluid emerged out of the head of the elephant. With the flow of the water the fire was extinguished at once, in the same way as the sun is pacified with shower of the rains by clouds.

At that point of time the lotus eyed Krishna clad in pltambara (yellow garment) roared like the lion. The divine kirlta adorned his head. His charming face looked quite beautiful and serene. Shrivatsa mark decorated his chest. His face was exteremely beautiful and his limbs were beaming like those of Indra. After Balarama, Shri Krishna also jumped at the same place in the group of rulers.

With the jumping of both the brothers, with the pressure of their feet, the mountain issuing the water from springs, which was instrumental in extinguishing of the fire, Finding the water flowing from the mountain, all the kings felt panicky.

Here ends chapter — 42, of Visnu Parva of the Harivariisa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata relating to the attack of the army of Jarasandha, the mountain put to flames and the escape of Balarama and Krishna. (Vrs. 1-87, P.T. = 5297)
