Krishna receives the divine crown from Garuda, arrival of the army of Jarasandha

Vaishampayana said: O Janamejaya, after the departure of Parasurama, both Krishna and Balarama, carrying the burden of the Yadava race, taking to the form at will started roaming about over the peak of the Gomantaka mountain.

The garlands of forest flowers, were decorating their chests. Both of them were clad in yellow and blue garments and looked like two clouds of yellow and blue complexions.

They decorated their bodies with the mountain metals, they stood over the peak of the mountain and started roaming in the pleasent forests for their sports.

They used to watch the shining constellations, the moon rise, as well the rising and setting of the stars.

Once the valorous Samkarsana was walking alone over the mountain peak without Krishna. He himself appeared like a mountain.

While so roaming about, he seated himself under the pleasent shade of the Kadamba tree (Neulea orientalis). The pleasent fragrance of the Kadamba tree carried by the cool breeze, served him like faning him.

The cool breeze, blowing slowly, served him well. At the same time the fragrant breeze entered his nostrils, with the touch of honey.

At that point of time, he became desirous of having a drink of nectar. Thereafter on the next day, like an intoxicated person, his throat became dry.

He was then reminded of the nectar consumed by him earlier. Becoming desirous of nectar, he went in search of the same. Suddenly he came across a tree.

During the rainy season, the rain had fallen over the blossomed Kadamba tree, which appeared like the nectar in the hollow of the same.

The heart of Balarama was upset with thirst. Like a thirsty person, he started drinking the nectar again and again. With the consumption of excess of nectar, he became intoxicated with the same and his body started staggering.

With the consumption of nectar, he started swinging. His eyes became unstable. The lustre of his face appeared like the moon of the winter season.

The sweet nectar was produced in the hollow of Kadamba tree, therefore it come to be known as Kadambari. Varuni appeared there in person, who produced nectar for the gods.

Finding that Balarama the elder brother of Krishna was unable to talk under the influence of Kadambari (nectar or honey) three divine girls appeared there to serve him.

One of them was Varuni the chief goddess of nectar who appeared in human form. The other was the shine of the moon who is the goddess of lustre and the third was another goddess, who is considered the best of the woman and had a lotus embossed over her flag. This goddess, folding her hand, appeared to serve Balarama — the son of Rohinl. All of them, then spoke to Balarama, who was under influence of the drinks.

Varuni spoke first of all, “O Baladeva, the lord of Devaloka, you be victorious over the army of the Daityas. I am your beloved Varuni and have appeared here to serve you.

О god, with spotless face, I know you in Patala in the form of serpent Sesa, but by presently, your incarnating an earth, you have disappeared from there. Learning about it, I the sinful women, had been wandering on earth, in search of you.

О invincible warrior, I have resided in the a bower surrounded by the flowers.

Being thirsty for me, I had been searching for you and had been living in the hollow of the tree hiding myself.

О sinless Balarama, as in the earlier times, at the time of the churning of the ocean, my father had sent me to you at the time of Purnayoga. As I have lived with you in the Patala and the ocean, similarly I have arrived here presently to serve you. I desire to be consumed by you, because from the heart of my heart, I have taken you as my master.

О sinless one, even if you can scold me, even then, I shall not leave you. О lord, I am clad in blue costumes, which are appropriate for the dwellers of the ocean. I have also worn the lotus besides the ear ornaments with lotus design and have arrived here to serve you. I do not want to serve anyone else, except you.”

After Varuni, the goddess Kanti appeared before Sariikarsana. Under the influence of intoxication, the region of her waist was shaking somewhat. The eyes were rolling. With folded hands she spoke, “O Balarama, victory to you.” Then smiling with love, she spoke purposeful words.

«O lord, you have thousands of heads, you are the lord of the world. In my view your glory is much more than the moon shine. I also, like Varuni, getting attracted with your virtues, have also arrived here to serve you.

The one who is fit enough to live in the chest of lord Visnu, the same goddess is desirous of embracing the chest of Balarama — the son of Rohini, turned into the beautiful garland, achieving spotlessness. His face looked like the lotus flowers. He held also a lotus flower in his hand. The goddess Sobha, appeared in human form, holding a garland in her hand, spoke to Samkarsana Balarama.

“O lord of gods, 0 Rama, О Balarama, you are extremely beautiful. Adorned with Varuni (Sudha), the moon shine, and myself (being the beauty of lotus flowers), you are shining like the moon.

You possess a thousand hoods and are known as Anantadeva, whose crown shines like the sun, the same crown has been brought by me here. This is the crown.

Besides this, I have also brought an earring studded with gem, which is the divine ornament of one of your ears. It is known as Adipadma or Padmaksa.

Several of the blue silken costumes, which are found in the ocean alone, and carpulent garland which was lying in the ocean, has also been brought by me which may please be accepted by you.

O god, this is your ealier ornament for wearing. You kindly accept it. О valorous one, this is the time for you to receive your ornament. These ornaments get glorified with you and not otherwise.

Accepting those ornaments and the divine damsel, Baladeva started shining like the moon of the winter season.

Thereafter Balarama resembling the blue lotus together with the dark complexioned Krishna looked graceful like the moon with constellations.

Both the brothers then started talking as if they were seated in their home. At the same time Garuda, the son of Vinita reached there with great force.

The illustrious one had arrived there from a battle field. The signs of the attacks by the enemy, could be seen over his body. He was desirous of the victory of gods and was adorned with the divine flower garland and the divine sandal paste over his body.

When lord Visnu was sleeping over the divine bed of Sesa in the ocean, at that point of time, Virochana — the son of a Daitya had stolen his crown.

Then Garuda had to fight with the Daityas in order to get back the crown of his lord. He therefore fought in the ocean a terrific war with them.

Snatching the crown of lord Visnu from fhe hands of the Daityas, Garuda — the foremost of the birds, at once flew in the sky — the abode of the gods.

Then he found that his master had arrived over this mountain for some other purpose. He was play fully carrying the Kirlta crown in his beak.

Finding Visnu over the Gomantaka mountain, in human form, without any glamour and his head without the crown, Garuda who could well understand the human feelings, while remaining in the sky, delightfully dropped the crown over the head of Shri Visnu(Krishna).

The crown fell over the head of Shri Krishna and was so fitted as if same one has personally placed it own the head of Shri Krishna. After having been fitted over the head of Shri Krishna, the crown added to the glory of the lord. As the sun is established over the peak of the Meru mountain at noon, similarly the crown also started shining.

Shri Krishna blossomed with delight, learning that Garuda had brought back the crown. Then he spoke to Balarama.

“O brother, for both of us, the way the arrangements have been made for the costumes and armemets besides the weapons for war, it is evident that the task of the gods is going to be established soon. There is no doubt about it.

When I was sleeping in the ocean, at that time the son of Virocana, taking to the form of Indra — reached there. When I leaving the serpent bed reached here, then that demon taking to the form of a crocodile, stole away my crown from that place. The same crown has been snatched away by Garuda from him and has placed it on my head.

Surely the king Jarasandha has arrived quite near, because the tops of the flags of chariots are now visible.

The flags the chriots of the rulers desirous of victory, with glamour are getting illumined, the number of which is limited.

It is astonishing the lines of the white Chatras carried over the chariots of the rulers are advancing towards us and appear like the lines of swans flying in the sky.

With the lustre of the weapons, the sky is also illuminating. The lustre of the weapons combined with the sunshine, has spread in the ten directions.

Surely all the weapons which would be used against me by the rulers would become infructuous.

The king Jarasandha has arrived at an appropriate time and he is the touch stone of our efficiency in war. Here is the first tast of the war.

О brother, both of us should remain together. We should not start war, before the arrival of the king Jarasandha. Let us think about his strength, till he arrivas.”

Thus speaking, Krishna started observing the army of Jarasandha, getting desirous of waging a war aginst him.

While inspecting all the rulers, the eternal Krishna, the foremost of the race of Yadus, started thinking for himself, “In the heaven, a discussion was made in the assembly of gods secretly and according to that, the rulers of earth are following the correct royal path. They will meet with destruction in war, according to the provision of the Sastras.

I feel that the destiny has sent these rulers for making offerings in the yajna of war. Their bodies which are sure to proceed to heaven have started shining presently.

The earth having been troubled with the burden of crowds of their armies had gone to heaven, and his so doing was quite appropriate.

Now, after some time this earth will be relieved of the burden of these rulers and the sky would be filled.

Here ends chapter — 41, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to Krishna’s receiving the divine crown from Garuda and the arrival of the army of Jarasandha. (Vrs. 1-62, P.T. = 5210)
