Getting satisfied, Janamejaya starts ruling the country

Sauti said — The king Janamejaya, who had developed a doubt in his mind without any reason, when was humbly enlightned by Visvavasu then he was pleased with the queen Vipustama and conducting himself on humanitarian grounds become peaceful.

The king Janamejaya, getting relieved of the mental burden, desirous of achieving of the height of glory for himself ruled the country with a religious mind and started enjoying the pleasent company of Vipustama.

He was never averse to the adoration and honour of the Brahmanas. He never neglected giving after charities and the performing of theyajnas. He never failed in the protection of his kingdom and never denounced his queen Vipustama.

It is totally impossible to avert the moves of the destiny; these words had been spoken by the sage Vyasa earlier. The learned king thought over the words of sage Vyasa again and again, as a result of which his mental agony as well as the rage disappeared.

A person who recites the great poetry of the sage Vyasa, becomes immensely adorable in the humans. He, achieving the excellent age, achieves the reward of becoming all knowledgeable besides lord Krishna.

A person, who recites these verses of the epic, which relieved Indra of his sins, is himself relieved of his sins. Besides he enjoys many of the desired pleasures and meeting with success being selfsatisfied, becomes blissful for long.

As the grown trees yield the fruits and flowers and the fruits again cause the trees to grow, similarly the speech emerging out of the sage Vyasa, should be expanded by the speakers, which increases the importance of the sage.

The virtuous person who recites or listens to this book, in case is sonless, he would have an illustrious son, In case he is fallen from wealth, dharma and place of importance, then he gets back his lost position. The ailment does not attract him. He does not remain in bondage for long. He earns the merits of his noble deeds.

Listening to the pleasent speech of sage Vyasa, the unmarried girl, achieves the desired husband, with the best of qualities and the destroyer of enemies, being valorous. She gives birth to several sons.

The Ksatriya people with the reciting of this book, or listining to it, become victorious on earth, and earns enormous riches, defeating his enemies. A Vaisya earns enormous wealth and a person of Sudra origin achieves the best position, by listening to this book.

Studying the book with the life stories of the great sages, a person achieves eternal wisdom. He then discarding the miseries, becoming detached, roams on earth.

By discussing this story narrated by me, among the Brahmanas you would roam about on earth with comfort.

The life stories of the saintly people, possessing enormous prowess, which have been given the shape of a book by the sage

Vyasa, I have explained in brief to you О Saunaka, now what more do you want to listen from me. What should I speak to you further?

Here ends chapter — 6, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabhdrata, relating to Janamejaya's starting ruling the country, getting satisfied. (Vrs. 1-13, P.T. = 10,021)

Chapter 7

The glory of lord Narayana

Janamejaya said — О Vaishampayana, the foremost of those well-versed in the yogic practices, now you please enlighten us about the glory of lord Padmanabha — you also kindly narrate about the origin of the gods and the Rishis at Puskara, from the lotus that emerged out of the navel of the lord. You kindly shed light over this complete mystery, because I do not feel satisfied with the listening of the glory of Shri Hari.

For how long and for what purpose does lord Purusottama sleep in the oceanic waters and what is the cause of the creation of kala?

When does lord Visnu wakes up from yoganidra and how does he engage himself in the creation of the universe?

О excellent one, what are the names of Prajapatis of the earlier times and how did the eternal Shri Hari create the astonishing universe?

О sage, in the terrific ocean, after the destruction of all the mobile and immobile creatures and the asuras are also nowhere to be found, the Raksasas also proceed on to the abode of Yama, no trace of fire, wind, earth and the sky is left, there is much of inter-change in the bhiitas, and the world appears like a thick dark cave, then how does Narayana the lord all the bhiitas, the performer of. the great deeds, is then based depending on whom?

О Brahman, О religious minded Rishi, I take refuge with you as a disciple, you recite the glory of lord Narayana in such a way, which would remove all my doubts.

O lord we are here to listen faithfully your speech, therefore you kindly speak out the glory of lord Shri Hari, keeping in view his incarnations on earth.

Vaishampayana said — О sinless Janamejaya, the foremost of the race of Kuru, the desire emerging in you to achieve the glory and knowledge of Narayana, it is befitting to your race. Such a desire infact emerges, as a result of the merits of the earlier birth.

You listen to the glory of lord Narayana, as has been heard by me from the mouths of the Brahmanas, well-versed in the Srutis, which is being narrated by me.

О Bharata, Dvaipayana Vyasa, son of Parasara, with whom I had an audience because of my tapas and who resembles Brhaspad — the preceptor of gods, had delivered discourse to me on the subject. I am going to repeat the same, as I had heard from him, according to my own wisdom. Simply being a Rishi it has not been possible to fully understand all the words of his speech correctly.

Who could be fully aware of the tattva of Narayana — the soul of the universe when the same is unknown even to Brahma - the god of creation.

The secret, which has been heard by me from the ascetics who visualise everyone as Narayana in the world, and who could establish the supreme tattava by nature, it indeed is the glory of Narayana itself.

The same Narayana-tattava is the thing to be thought over by the people with the divine sight. The same happens to be the karana-tattva for the people engaged in the activities, besides being guardian deity, besides being the god. The same is known as the destiny or the fate.

The one which is bhUta (past), adhibhiita (illusion) the one which is known to the great Rishis, as the tattva, which is the truth, which was has been realised through the Vedas and those who are aware of the Paramatma-tattva, they are well versed in the Vedas.

The one who is the performer, the doer, intelligence, mind, the soul, the Pradhana Purusa, the father or the preceptor, who alone is represented by all these words, he happens to be the supreme soul, who is required to be known.

He happens to be the death for the death itself. He is the observer of all, besides being independent. He is also the five types of evidence or pramana. He is unshaken, indestructible besides being Brahman.

О sinless one, the people, who remain engaged in his worship, establish him in various forms. He is the lord who creates and destroys all.

The one who activates us, he has also upset us with several bondages. We adore the same Isvara, with the performing of the yajhas and aspire to achieve him peacefully.

The one who is the speaker, is the cause and the subject of the speech and the one who is present in any form being arrogant of being a speaker as jivatma, I am going to speak out his form before you, which you please listen from me. The main topic of moksa (libretion) and about which you take of the heaven, narrating several stories, besides the deep Srutis, are all the form of Narayana. The world, the preserver of the world besides the gods, are all the form of Narayana.

The worldly truth and untruth, whatever is the cause as the task, the one who is bhiita, those who are the cause of creation for one another like the seed and trees, the future, and all the mobile and immobile, the deceptions, represent lord Narayana himself.

Chapter 8

Measure of Satyayuga

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the people with wisdom, speak about the length of Satyayuga to be four thousand divine years. The Sandhyas are of double this number viz. eight thousand years.

During this yuga, dharma stands on ali the four of its legs. The body of adharma stands on a single foot. The noble people then remain devoted to dharma worship the lord by means of performing the sacrifices.

The Brahmanas remain engaged in the following of their dharma. The rulers busy themselves in the royal affairs. The Vaisyas attend to the farming, while the Sudras serve all the three Varnas.

During that yuga, the truth, dharma and tapas are always on the increase. The noble people have noble conduct and they propogate others to follow the same.

О Bharata, the conduct of those born in the high race as well the low races, is the same.

The length of Tretayuga has been said to be three thousand years. Their sandhyas are of double that period.

The dharma in this yuga stands on three feet and adharma stands over two feet. During the Satyayuga, the truth and the sattvagunas always remain present completely.

But during the Tretayuga because of the greed all the Varnas start earning blemish. Because of the entry of deficiency in all the four Varnas, they become weak.

This is the position of the period of Tretayuga, which was created by the lord himself. Now you better listen to the condition of Dvapara as well.

О best of the race of Kuru, the longivity of Dvapara is said to be of two thousand divine years and its Sandhyas is said to be spreading to four thousand years.

О lion of the race of Kuru, during this period as well, the wealthy, learned, those filled with rajoguna, wicked, degraded and degraded Brahmanas would be born.

During this period dharma has only two feet to stand, but adharma standing on three feet starts rising. The limitations of dharma which are prescribed in Satyayuga, are gradually reversed in this yuga.

The feelings of Brahmana — hood are set to decline. The wall of faith crumbles. Because of the mixing up of the dharma of Kaliyuga, the people disown the vratas and fasting.

The cruel Kaliyuga with its Sandhya of two hundred years, lasts for a thousand years, it is said.

During this period, adharma stands on his four legs, but the body of dharma rests over a single leg. The people of this age, are usually lustful and filled with passions.

During the age of Kali, one could hardly find a person observing fasts, noble, truthful, believer in god, or the teacher in Brahmajnana.

The Brahmanas of the age of Kali, are filled with pride, deprived of love, behaving like the SUdra would move over the noble path.

The people would pollute the asramas. They shall have illegal birth and shall cohabit with the forbidden women. During the age of Kali, the people would behave like this.

Thus a Caturyuga comprises of twelve thousand years. The seventy one Caturyugas make a Manvantara. (After this period, a Manu is destroyed).

О Janamejaya, during the time of dissolution, the entire mobile and immobile would is lost. There is no doubt about it. The learned people consider a Caturyuga to be comprised of the twelve thousand years.

When these Caturyugas lapse a thousand times, then a day of Brahma is reconed.

О lord of earth, after the lapse of a day of Brahma, observing that those having bodies are interested in the comforts Rudra, who is an expert in the destruction of the world, destroy, all the gods, Brahmanas, Daityas, humans, Yaksas, Raksasas, the Devarsis, Brahmarsis, Rajarsis Kinnaras, apsaras, serpents, mountains, rivers, animals, birds, jivas of lower creations, deer, birds, and all others. He being the lord of all the bhutas creates all the bhutas just to destroy them.

At the end of his day, Brahma, in the form of Rudra, turning to the form of a sun, take out the eyes of all, then turning as the wind, extracts the life of all; turning to the form of the fire, he reduces all the lokas to ashes. Then turning to cloud, pour heavy rain again causing deluge in which the entire universe is submerged.

Here ends chapter — 8, of the Bhavisya Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to measure of Satyayuga. (Vrs. 1-26, P.T. = 10,072)
