Method of performing Karmas for acheiving of moksa

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the ever growing sun, created a hole in the earth in which the Mainaka and other mountains were established in a natural way.

There are many Parvas over it as a result of which it is called a Parvata or a mountain. Because of its immobile position, it is called stationary. By nature it resembles the Meru mountain.

Over the vast top of the mountain, there lives a great Purusa, who is prosperous, who had emerged out of the resplendent Paramesvara. The same Paramatma had created this Purusa quite naturally.

The lustre Brahman, which is lodged in the centre of sahasrara сакта in the head, or otherwise the Brahma maya tejas established in the Vedanta, his resplendent form had appeared as Purusa, who keeps on shining.

Out of the face of the same Purusa, Brahma emerged with four faces and four other Brahmanas, who were resplendent with their own lustre.

The faces of Brahma are resplendent with the Vedas, which emerged from the breath of the supreme soul. Brahma, happens to be the foremost of the Brahmanas, well-versed in the Vedas. In this way the same great Bhuta earned enormous grace.

The one who had redeemed the earth out of the ocean, he represents the great Bhuta. He reaching Meru mountain — the place of Brahma was established as the four faced Brahma. He was the one who rescuing the earth in the form of Varaha, had disa- ppered. The same lord came to be known in the form of Brahma.

With the combination of both the feet of the same lord at the top of the Meru mountain, it a come to be known as Brahmaloka. Its height is a lakh and a hundered yojanas. Similarly its area is spread into four times the above figure.

Otherwise no one can measure the area of that in a thousand years making use of the divine knowledge even.

О Rajendra, on its four corners, there are four huge rocks or stone slabs, by which their contigious areas have been covered. Each one of them is spread in an area of a hundered yojanas each. The spread of the Meru mountain, exceeds million of times more. This has been concluded by Nityasiddhas, who are always devoted to Brahman, and the spokesmen on Brahman.

О Naresvara, son of Bharata, lord Brahma, living with Shri Visnu, Marudganas, Devndras, Rudras, Vasus, Adityas, Visvedevas, Vivasvan, and Varuna, making use of his Brahma body, protect the earth as well as the rulers of the earth.

The Brahman, that had been achieved by Brahma, pervades everywhere in a universal manner. It is resplendent in the form of the lusre of Visnu, and is controlled by several types of rules, and are followed by him. Those who are truthful and perform Brahmacarya vrata such of the learned people who are well-versed in the Vedas, have described it as Brahman, it is the same Brahman.

In this way all the three lokas, are lodged in the day of Brahma. The invisible Brahman also remains established in the living body of Brahma in the form of Jlvatma.

With the influce of Parabrahman the daily routine is performed. He is the one whose speech is faultless and such faultless people in case adore Brahman with pure minds, it is extremely beneficial.

The learned people well-versed in the Vedas, when perform the karmas in a selfless manner, they are quite beneficial. The position which is said to be the result of the face, it is just a fraction of the supreme soul.

The one who has been described to be a step of the universe, the same Brahman, happens to be nityasiddha soul of the bhUtas. (It cannot be achieved with the performing of the karmas with future reward in sight). Still because of the difference in opinion among the Brahmans well-versed in the Vedas, those of them, who are truthful and associated with Indra, Mitra, Varuna and others, make use of the word visva in the viniyoga of the yajhas. (with the performing of the yajhas with some reward in view, one can achieve the lokas of Indra or others, which is of no consequence as compared to the achieving of Moksa or achieving of the lord. Therefore, a performer, should resort to performing the karmas in a selfless manner, without expectation of any reward.

The forms of lord known as gross or subtle, are the creation of imagination of wisdom alone, well realising this, lord Brahma, created initially a human couple- a man and a woman.

He has the universal form, is eternal lord Brahma, who with his goddess in the form of Sakti, creating enormous comforts makes use of them with his followers like Kasyapa and others.

Those who are desirous of following the path of a recluse, and aspire for Moksa or liberation, for such Brahmavedas, the only adorable lord happens to be Brahma.

Soma — the lord of osadhis emerged out of Paramesvara, possessing the divine knowledge. At that point of time for soma, it was the stream of water, falling from the upper region, which bestowed the power of production. The same stream had established lord Mahesvara, over the position of the lord of the BhUtas.

The said stream of water performed abhiseka of lord Siva in a natural way and after so doing it started flowing on earth creating ripping sound. Because of this it is called a river.

Enhancing the grace of Brahmaloka, shattering the mountains falling on the way into hundreds of pieces, the goddess descended on earth from the sky and it came to be known by the name of Ganga. It was then divided into seven streams and started flowing on earth in different directions.

О Rajendra, the goddess Ganga, was further divided in thousands of rivers taking to many forms. Some emerged out of Ganga, produced the cereal plants. By so doing, he not only protects the earth but also the heaven with his nectar like rays.

With the expansion of this loka, the Jarayuja (bom of womb), and other living being go on increasing. With the combination of the earth, water and light, the wild race and other fruits grow rapidly, after which the activities of the human beings and other learned people start.

From the mouth of the Paramesvara, the four Vedas which emerged in the form of Brahman, were further discoursed to the people.

The spiritual form of the supreme soul, which is auspicious, having four padas and eternal form of yajha, established Brahma- the Grand sire, as the surpreme duty.

All the four asrams are the four steps of dharma, by which the entire universe is held. A step of dharma is Brahmacarya is completed by spending time in studies. Taking refuge with auspicious householder, who conducts himself in a household gracefully, the second step of the dharma is completed.

The third step of dharma is glorified in vanapratha — asrama, (when a vanaprasthl gracefully performs his duties.) The establisher of atma-tattva and those gaining acess to Brahman, by practicing "tattvamasi” phrase, the fourth step of dharma is fortified. These are the four step of dharma, which have been prescribed in the Sastras for the achieving of moksa.

With the appropriate following of the Guhyadharma soma develops in the Brahmamandala. According to the Vedas, with the following of the vrata of Brahmacarya, and with their recitation, the Vedas always remain alive.

The Rishis and the manes dwelling over the Meru mountain feel satisfied with the performing of the Vedic dharma by the householders.

The Brahmaloka located over the excellent top of the Meru mountain, should be seen by the people and efforts should be made to achieve the same. The Rishis press both the testicles with their feet while seated in Siddhasana.

Turning the neck, fixing the chin in both the collarbones, the back should be bent inwardly, raising the chest a little. Then one should smilingly remain straight. The teeth should not be allowed to touch one another. Both the hands should be placed at the navel region and held in anjali posture. In other words the right hand should be placed over the left hand. Then controlling all the limbs from all the sides one should meditate.

Thus meditating, the Grand sire, with the Manahpradhana prana, should move his jivatma at the point in the middle of the nose and the eye brows, which is called murdha. Then with the mental resolve (manasika-samkalpa) created the universe. He did so with the yogic exercise of the lord Yogesvara. With these yogic practices, he, with the use of the aforesaid method, established jlva in murdha (a point at the junction of the eyebrows and the nose) and achieved fortunes, as a result of which he was successful in creating the entire universe.

Brahma — the grand sire, whose sense organs had been separated from the worldly pleasures with the practicing of the retaining of the sense organs. He had been freed from all the attractions and was turned to the form of Visnu. He therefore appeared in the form of Narayana and started spreading his lustre like the moon in the sky.

Then he started shining in the middle of the sky, with his rays like the second sun- god, with the combination of the chaitanya- jyoti.

A person devoid of wisdom is unable to locate the eternal Brahman in centre of his eyebrows and the nose, where he always reside.

One should adore the lord having the sun and the moon as gods, combined the veins like Ida and Pingala in which his conscious is reflected. One gets the power exhibitted in his own form with the eyes. The Brahmanas, who are truthful and are well versed in the Vedas have an audience with his pure intelligence. The other people can never have a look at him, because the others do not possess the knowledge even of the liberature on spirituality, what to speak of having a look at him.

О Naresvara, the one who on earth with the application of the yogic excercises can control or release all the living beings, such a yogi, out of confusion, in case does not absorb himself in yoga, then the worldly pleasure, involving him in the simhayoga which causes destruction of the people, get him defeated.

O son of Bharata, these super natural powers, divert the people's mind towards the killing of the people and other degraded activities and push them in the well of depression.

Therefore in order to achieve Moksa one should completely divert his mind for the adoration of the supreme Brahman, who discarding his form of lunar disc, should enters the lunar-jyoti or spritual resplendence, which is lodged in the heart, and then enters the same. Apprehensive of some obstruction, like Gayatri or Saguna Brahman, gets established in the pure lustre, which is place of his invisible origin. He has form of akara, ukara, makara, with ardha-matra. or Visva, Taijas, Prajna, and Turiya (divine being) or Purusa in four forms.

The Purusa is a spiritual Brahman. He is inconceivable by the sense organs or intelligence. He is eternal, in destructible, and unblemished, he is beyond the control of sense organs, is devoid of merits or form, but possesses the lustre. He has a lustre as bright as the moon rays. He always illumines with the form of sotra or truth. He changes his forms and changes his complexions like white, red etc.

The resplendent god, produced Rgveda and Yajurveda from his eyes. The Samaveda emerged out of the tip of his tongue.

After their emergence, the Vedas with the use of tattvas achieve their own regions. Because of this they are called the Vedas. They enjoy the grace of Brahmapada and this is also the reason for them to be called as Vedas.

At that point of time, the Vedas, bestow the divine lustre to the eternal Brahman, and with their divine forms they bestow grace on the universe, Taijas, Prajna, and Turiya or in the form of yajna -Purusa.

The combination of Atharvaveda is considered to be the head of the yajna Purusa. The Rgveda forms the part the neck and both the shoulders. With Samaveda the heart and the back of the Yajna Purusa are formed. Similarly the yajurveda, the part of the body below the navel and region upper to the navel are formed, including the waist, thighs, legs besides the feet etc. The said Purusa is bestowed with the divine form besides maya appeared from the eternal Divine Being. The said Purusa is eternal, indestructible, and has been formed of the Divine Being.

О excellent one, this is eternal yajha of the Vedas devoid of violence, which is eternal, makes all the living being on earth and the heaven comfortable.

The yoga can be started with the karma known as Manah samyama activity. This is called the eternal Brahmacarya. The one who knows about it, he becomes well versed in the cause of the origin of the living beings.

The Munis (sages) well versed in the Vedas having been freed from all the bondages of karma, have termed him as the siddha. Such a soul surely achieves the siddhi, there is no doubt about it.

The Brahmanas, well versed in the Vedas as well as Brahman and who feel tired of the control of their minds, they, with the use of Brahmavidya, for the achieving of the Svarajyapada describe the neccessity of the yogic practices.

Janamejaya said — О sage, the thing which is acceptable in mind as per one's own will or in orther words as the fire subsides with the burning of the wood completely, what is the cause for the achievement of that mind. I would like to listen about it. You kindly enlighten me with your views on the subject.

Vaishampayana said — О Bharata, О Naresvara, there is no outward cause for the same. The relevant cause is present in the body. The activities performed with the body, it dwell in the form of sathskara and becomes the cause of the achievement of the mind.

The person well versed in the Brahman and performing the hard tapas, becomes aware of all the things to be known, with consciousness, the same being the soul cannot be known. Still with the discource of a teacher or by reading the scriptures one can be known by symptoms. But it can not be known by the karmas.

О lord of earth, the Brahmanas and others who are engaged in the study of the Vedas, should, for the achieving of moksa, discarding arrogance should live with humility. They should continue the studies, listen to the advice of the Acarya and scriptures daily and try to understand the tattva of the soul or otherwise.

They should always remain purified, perform the karmas devoting them to Brahman and should engange themselves appropriately in devotion. In this way a Brahmana should always remain in attendence with the preceptor, folding both his hands.

Getting enlightened on the guru-tattva, he should daily perform karmas which yield moksa (liberation). He should not allow the arrogance to develop in his mind and remain humble. He should always preserve the feeling of Brahman, and observe silence, concentrating his mind.

He should concentrate his mind over the spotless Vaisnavapada. Then the Brahmana with the concentration of his mind should remain delightful, while meditating.

Such people, who are well-versed in the form of moksa, becoming free from attractions, controlling their sense organs, with an unblemished mind, achieve the supreme Brahman or the supreme soul.

The eternal Brahman is also called aksara or unperishable. The glimpses of the same Brahman have been displayed in the scripture on the karmas performed without desires and the jhana-yoga.

Such of the people, who disown everything for achieving of vaisnava-pada and denounce kama-yoga (living with wife and children) such Brahmanas possessing humility achieve the knowledge of aksara- Brahman.

O king such of the people, becoming unmindful for the reward of the karmas and have raised themselves from the bondage of the rebirth, their lokas are established in Niskama-karmayoga.

О Naresvara, the jiva is bound with the accepting of the reward for the karmas performed by him and by disowing the same he gets freed. Because of the samskara of the earlier birth, the jiva earns auspicious ideas from the learned people.

Such of the people, who disown the reward of their karmas, is freed from the bondage of the sense organs, achieves the hightest position (libration) and he never attains the human body.

Here ends chapter — 17, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the performing of karmas for achieving moksa. (Vrs. 1-69, P.T. = 10,422)
